DID YOU KNOW? Though more buyers may prefer to lease new vehicles over preowned vehicles, some prospective lessees consider leasing preowned automobiles. According to the automotive resource Edmunds.com, many dealerships restrict their preowned lease inventory to vehicles that are less than four years old and have fewer than 48,000 miles. In addition, dealerships may only allow potential preowned lessees to lease vehicles that have been certified. Some drivers may prefer leasing preowned vehicles because the cost to do so can be considerably less than the cost to lease brand new vehicles. Those costs are less for various reasons, including the preowned vehicle having a lower value and lower rate of depreciation than a brand new car or truck. Though many dealerships are willing to lease preowned vehicles, prospective lessees may find that more dealerships prefer leasing brand new vehicles than used models. Still, for potential lessees who intend to buy their vehicles at the end of their leases, preowned leases may make the best fit, as preowned leased vehicles will likely cost considerably less than to purchase when the lease expires than vehicles that were leased brand new.

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION

After an exciting seven-game series of both the American and National League playoffs, with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Texas Rangers now facing off in the World Series, which team are you rooting for?

Get necessary permits: Permits are designed to ensure the work is being done to code and in a safe manner. However, they are not without additional costs and processing time, and that can cause some homeowners to skip this step. According to the home information site The Spruce, building permits cost anywhere from $400 to about $2,200 for new home construction. Building permits for smaller projects can cost $100 or less, and typically are based on a percentage of the anticipated cost of the project.

- Arizona Diamondbacks

A permit may be issued the day the application is submitted, while other cities and towns may issue permits up to two or more weeks later. Factor permit fees and processing times into the renovation plan.

- Texas Rangers

If it comes to light a homeowner did work without a required permit, he or she may face penalties; may have to tear out work done to have it inspected or redone; some may be unable to sell a home until permits have been obtained and work has been done to code. Homeowners insurance coverage also may be affected if homeowners do not obtain the proper permits.

IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME Windows allow natural light to enter a home, but windows also enable neighbors and others to see into a home. If thieves are the ones looking inside, wide open windows present a security issue. Window treatments are an effective way to add privacy to a home. Closing curtains or blinds limits others’ ability to see inside the house. Switch to more opaque window treatments when using interior lighting more often, as gossamer draperies may still make it possible for outsiders to understand what’s going on inside the home if people and items are backlit.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing.

585-377-3222 Fence Etiquette Prevents Disputes: There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet. Page 9

The site closed the auction at a top bid of $3,000. * A mental phenomenon called the Troxler effect, discovered in 1804, causes people to see monsters in mirrors -- whether they say “bloody Mary” three times or not. * In 1987, Steve Rothstein paid $250,000 for a lifetime unlimited first-class American Airlines ticket, even hopping on planes to get a sandwich or go to a baseball game in other cities. It cost American Airlines around $21 million, and they unsurprisingly ended his contract in 2008.

Humbled with Gratitude I was humbled today with gratitude. Shopping is complex with nerve pain and numbness, limiting me to one to two items I can carry close enough to my chest to see the floor below. Surprisingly, a “Katrina” added my chocolates to her bill, and the check-out clerk helped me express this thanks! Thank you for voting Thank you to everyone who gets out and votes on Election Day, Tuesday, November 7, 2023. By voting you get to make sure your vote is counted, and also helps stop voting fraud. This prevents others from using your Absentee Ballot. And, the more bonafide votes cast, the less effect ballot harvesting has on our elections. Generous Donation To Livingston County residents ... Thank you for your very generous donations in gathering warm clothes for migrant children. Your overwhelming response to this need shows your love of the strangers among us. May God bless all who give and those who receive.

Go to WWW.GVPENNYSAVER.COM and submit your own Rants and Raves under the tab -

SHARE WITH US Drivers If you want to drive 10 mph under the speed limit that’s fine. If you look in your mirror and see multiple vehicles lined up behind you why can’t you at least move a bit to let some by? You may have all the time in the world but others don’t! Headlights From the Other Side New cars have LED headlights. I didn’t choose LEDs; the car came this way. A recent rant complained about being blinded by bright headlights. I am constantly flashed by other cars as though I have my brights on. I have two options to this flashing. One: do nothing and look like a jerk. Two: flash my brights and let them face a much brighter light, thereby demonstrating that what the other driver thought was bright wasn’t even close. The solution for drivers bothered by lights hasn’t changed. If a car is approaching, fix your gaze on the painted line along the shoulder on the right side of your car until the bright lights pass. Staring directly at any headlights and getting angry is a silly move. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

DON’T MISS THE GAME!!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Today’s hearing aids are barely visible, highly effective and easy to afford.

Paget’s Disease Causes Arthritis, Pain, Deformities and More

We Listen More...To Help You Hear Better! Offices in Victor • Newark

---

1331 East Victor Rd. • Victor

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has been diagnosed with Paget’s disease. I would like to know more about it; this is the first time I have ever heard of it. I would like to know the treatments and how much damage affects the bones. He is 76, had prostate cancer and underwent radiation treatment. -- C.W. ANSWER: Paget’s disease of the bone is a common disease in people of European ancestry, with a lifetime prevalence of approximately 3%, although it remains undiagnosed in many. The cause of the disease appears to be a defect in bone reabsorption by the osteoclast, a specialized cell that normally helps maintain bone health. Paget’s disease is not a cancer. It is normally diagnosed over the age of 55. Most cases of Paget’s disease are asymptomatic; however, without treatment, some people will develop arthritis, pain, deformities and fractures. The bone deformities may lead to nerve compression and, in the case of the tiny bones in the ear, hearing loss. X-rays and a high alkaline phosphatase (ALP) blood test are suggestive of the diagnosis. A bone scan is recommended to see the extent of damage from the disease. Fortunately, highly effective treatments are available. Bisphosphonate drugs, the same drugs that are used to treat many people with osteoporosis, are very effective. A single treatment with zoledronic acid is effective at stopping (not reversing) the progression of the disease, and fewer than 20% of people will need a second dose. Diagnosing and treating early are ideal. I don’t think his prostate cancer or radiation treatment has anything to do with his diagnosis of Paget’s.

PROTECTING YOUR VISION FROM DIABETES (NAPSI)—Diabetes kills more Americans each year than AIDS and breast cancer combined— and can cause serious problems throughout the body. According to the National Eye Institute, eye health, for example, can become critically compromised. Around 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4 percent of the population, are living with diabetes, with about 1.5 million more being diagnosed every year. The longer someone has diabetes, the greater his or her chances are of developing diabetic retinopathy, or damage to the blood vessels in the retina. According to the National Eye Institute, between 40 and 45 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy. While being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle are certainly linked to diabetes, social and environmental factors such as poverty, stress, and lack of safe housing and access to a healthy diet can also compromise your health and ultimately contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, addressing these social determinants of health has become a top priority for Medicaid programs. “We encourage our members with diabetes to have regular eye exams to rule out complications,” said Dr. Andrea Gelzer, senior vice president of medical affairs at AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need. “We educate our members so they understand that living a healthy lifestyle, controlling their blood sugar and having regular eye exams can help save their vision.” Simple steps can help mitigate the effects of diabetes and may potentially delay complications from diabetic eye disease, including controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure, monitoring your cholesterol, seeing your doctor regularly, and having a dilated eye exam at least once per year—or more if recommended by your eye care professional. AmeriHealth Caritas is part of the Independence Health Group in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and one of the nation’s leaders in health care solutions for those most in need. Here’s a Tip

* Mail service is a wonderful thing. Order what you wanand it’s in your mailbox or on your doorstep tomorrow. From efficiency to penny pinching, you can use the mail order to help out in numerous ways. Or, use it to bring a smile to someone’s face: Keep a stack of stamped postcards with you. Jot a note and mail one off whenever the mood strikes. I almost guarantee a great response from the recipient! Who doesn’t love real snail mail? -- JoAnn * To save on prescription costs, ask if your health insurance participates in a mail order service where you can get three months of a drug for a discounted cost. Mine costs less for three months than it does for one month in my local drugstore, and I don’t even have to go pick it up. -- B.W. in Virginia * One of the greatest assets in our communities is the public library, and mine has just added a new service that I’m over the moon about: delivery! I can search the card catalog from home and have the books I want delivered right to my house. It’s so convenient. -- J.H. in Florida

Mice & Rat Treatment

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You often mention that owners should spend time with their dogs in basic obedience training. What are “the basics” exactly? -- Ferris T., Huntington, N.Y. A: While the specifics of basic obedience training for dogs are better detailed through books or by professional trainers, I can list these training requirements here. • Housetraining: The most basic and most important to you and your dog’s peace of mind. Teaching a new dog where and when to eliminate, and training yourself to keep a proper schedule, is a crucial initial step. • Heel: Your dog should walk calmly alongside you, and not struggle against the leash, pull you down the street or chase after birds, cars or other dogs. • Sit: A well-trained dog will sit on command. When training on the leash, have the dog sit on your left side. • Down: The dog should lie down (on his belly, paws forward) on command. • Stay: In the “sit” or “down” position, the dog should not move until you release him with a verbal command. • Come: At your command, the dog should come to you, or respond to further directional commands (such as tugging the leash right or left to signal a turn). That’s essentially it: five basic commands and housetraining. It doesn’t sound like much, but teaching a dog of any age these skills will take at least several weeks, if not months. And they must be taught correctly: no hitting or yelling, maintaining dominance over the dog. Training books provide many more details on effective ways to do this, while a professional trainer can demonstrate additional effective techniques to ease the basic training process. Remember that basic obedience training doesn’t stop once these skills have been learned. Dogs need regular reinforcement, even if it’s just a five-minute review during their daily walks.

Albert Wan and Jenny Smith Open Bleak House Books in Honeoye Falls After Unexpected Move from Turmoil in Hong Kong BY SUZIE WELLS

A

civil rights/criminal lawyer by trade, Albert Wan, decided to try his hand at online bookselling when his wife, Jenny Smith, landed a teaching position at a Hong Kong university and the couple and their children, Ida and Charlie, moved. Founded in Hong Kong in 2017, Bleak House Books opened a brick-and-mortar shop a year later in a bright space on the 27th floor of a high-rise office building overlooking Kowloon. Wan says the vintage appearance of the shop was surpassed only by its “best community of booklovers, friends, and neighbors an indie bookseller could ever hope for.” Within a couple years of opening, this bookstore faced social movements and then the pandemic and anti-Chinese sentiments. While other indie bookstores shuttered, Bleak House Books stood as a “literary oasis” or “literary outpost,” “never just sold books, but [instead] connected with readers and the community,” as one reporter in HK said. A safe, warm home away from home, Bleak House Books developed quite a grassroots following in Hong Kong and around the world. Hong Kong became home for Wan and his family, but life had different plans for them. Albert and Jenny Wan night before soft opening, Wan explains that political June 23, 2023. turmoil and civil unrest turned Hong Kong into something akin to any other mainland Chinese city overnight, with public gatherings and elections banned, opposition figures, lawyers, and journalists arrested, “sensitive” books removed from shelves, movies censored, and government harassing and jailing citizens with little provocation. He reflects that “Many Hongkongers, especially those with young children, were leaving en masse. The city they knew and loved no longer felt like home to them.” Wan and Smith had to make a choice for their family’s safety. He explained to Bleak House Books’ incredibly loyal customers as they closed the shop in October 2021, “Given the state of politics in Hong Kong, Jenny and I can no longer see a life for ourselves and our children in this city.” Wan says that announcement “will go down as the saddest day in my life.” While he admits that no country is perfect, his family is thankful they could return to the States for “freedom that doesn’t exist in Hong Kong anymore.”

As non-traditional booksellers, Wan says he and Smith think of the bookshop as one that serves the needs of the community and has interesting, non-mainstream books. He explains there is “No science to [their] book selection,” but with their diverse interests and backgrounds, and basic understanding of literature, the publishing history, authors, etc., Wan and Smith select a wide array of new and used texts they think the community will enjoy. Sometimes they strike out, but usually, he says, their selections hit well. Bleak House Books maintains a solid Hong Kong presence, with reminiscent artwork throughout the shop as well as a Hong Kong collection within the shop, keeping the past and connections alive. Wan says the hardest part of leaving the old shop was saying goodbye to everyone and everything they built. He says the new shop’s goals are to keep the store open financially and not lose momentum. To do that, they Charlie reading at BHB. will try new things, engage the community, keep things fresh, and stay active. “Opening and closing the shop each day is not enough. Doing more is the challenge and what makes the job interesting.” Wan says they plan to buy and sell books, host events, and be a bookshop first and foremost for the community. Wan offers honest perspective on the current state of bookselling: “Our focus as an indie bookshop is not to compete with [big box bookstores online or in person], especially on book prices, but to be as different from this faceless behemoth as we can; in other words, to be the best community-based, family-owned small business that we can be.” Wan explains that life circumstances sometimes take control, and all one can do is face the challenges and do your best. He suggests, “Try new things.” When you step outside your comfort zone, he says, “it’s always hardest to take that first step, but when you look back, you see you’re a much stronger, more compassionate person.” Bleak House Books hosts its Grand Opening on the November 11th, featuring authors from near and far, stories, music, children’s activities, food, drinks, and celebration.

Now, two years later, Bleak House Books operates out of a formidable storefront on Main Street, Honeoye Falls, offering what big bookstores fail to deliver: a small-town atmosphere with communitycentric ideals focusing on day-to-day operations. Over the past couple of months, Wan says they have gotten to know the community they serve and look forward to the future here, even as they miss Hong Kong and the friends they made and the community they built.

As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
