ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

Hardscaping is an industry term that refers to the non-living features of a landscape. These features can include everything from decks to walkways to ornamental boulders. Introducing paths or paver walls to a property helps develop that home’s hardscape. Hardscape and soft elements often work in concert to create inspiring landscape designs.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Social Security Benefit for 2023 It’s official: Our Social Security increase for 2023 will be 8.7%. They say it’s the largest increase in 40 years. For the average senior, that’s going to mean a $146 monthly increase. Plus we’re getting a small “rebate” on that massive Medicare Part B increase we faced last year when the cost went to $170.10 to pay for Aduhelm, an Alzheimer’s disease drug that was said to cost $56,000 per year. (After facing criticism, manufacturers had to cut the cost in half, down to $28,200.) We’ll now save $5.20 on our Part B premium, with the average monthly deduction being $164.90. The Part B annual deductible will drop to $226, a $7 savings. What’s disturbing is that only a few months ago the financial gurus were expecting we’d receive a 10.2% increase on Social Security, based on all the high prices we’ve been seeing this year and will likely see into 2023. Instead, they’ve lowered that to the 8.7% ... while prices have continued to rise. The problem is how those annual increases are calculated. They use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners And Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which calculates the prices of goods and services for things those urban workers care about: clothing, education, electronics and so on. That CPI-W covers 29% of the population. Instead, they should use the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E), which focuses on goods and services that seniors spend money on: medical, drugs, food, housing and so on. The next time you call your senators and representatives, be sure to ask why the Elderly index isn’t being used. After all, they’ve been thinking about it since the 1980s. Meanwhile, don’t let the Medicare open enrollment period pass you by. Until Dec. 7 you have the option to make changes to your original Medicare Advantage plan, supplemental plan and prescription drug plan.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

Puzzle Answers This Week

4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible.

– MILK

Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2022

‘tis the season PEOPLE TO TIP AND GIFT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Are you making a list and checking it twice? If so, don’t forget to add a few extra people to that list who are worthy of a gift this holiday season. Certainly friends and family are in mind for presents, but what about the service providers in your life? After a challenging year, people in the service industry might benefit from a holiday boost this year more than ever. Here’s who you may want to spread some cheer to this holiday season. Hairdressers and nail techs: It takes a lot of effort to look one’s best, and these individuals help people put their best selves forward. Consider tipping the amount you would normally spend on one visit. If you get your hair or nails done frequently and consider this person a friend, opt for a gift instead, such as a gift card to a nice restaurant or a pampering service for him or her. Babysitter or caregiver: This person is likely close with the family and may be deserving of more than a tip. Pick an age-appropriate gift you know this person will love. What about a coveted pair of Bluetooth-enabled earbuds or headphones? A gift card to a store you know this person frequents also can be fitting, or a year-long subscription to a streaming music or movie service.

You’ll find unique gifts. Shoppers can find those sought-after one-of-a-kind gifts in locally owned boutiques and jewelry stores.

Landscapers: If the same person or crew services the lawn most of the time, a tip of $20 each is an appropriate amount.

Teachers: Class parents may take up a collection for the teacher and offer one class gift. If your student is educated by multiple teachers and the school staff is top-notch, consider stocking the staff lounge with snacks and beverages or cater a lunch.

Aunt Millie’s Attic

Mail carrier: The mail is delivered six days of the week in any and all weather. Treat your mail carrier to a nice gift, but stick to the rules of the U.S. Postal Service. Mail carriers are not allowed to accept cash, checks or gift cards that can be used like credit cards. Stick to a gift of no more than $25.

Cleaning person: You rely on this person to keep your home tidy and clean. He or she is deserving of the cost of one visit, according to Roseanne Thomas, author of “Excuse Me: The Survival Guide to Modern Business Etiquette.” Individuals can use their discretion concerning service providers in their lives who may be worthy of some extra cheer this holiday season.

Donald R. Moore October 26, 2022 Bloomfield: Donald “Don” Ray Moore passed away at the age of 82 on Wednesday, October 26th, 2022, at FF Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, NY. Born in Martin, Kentucky, he was the oldest of 6 children to his late parents Russell and Golda Moore. Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Joyce Marie (Clark) Moore; his daughters, Monica J. (Andrew) Bell and Kimberly A. (Scott) Gibson; his grandchildren, Garrett Gibson, Glen Gibson, Gavin Gibson, Julia Gibson, Jessica Gibson, and Grant Gibson; his siblings, Tilden “Ray” Moore, Grace Ramsden, Sharon “Sue” (Wayne) Gilbert, Flossie (William “Sandy”) McPherson, and Villa Mae “Lou” Jamieson; brother-in-law, Fred (Eileen) Clark; sister-in-law, Jayne (George) Heuring, and several nieces and nephews. Don proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1965. His tours of duty included Korea and Germany. He was employed for 24 years at General (Railway) Signal Company in Rochester, NY, and retired as Shipping and Receiving Manager. He retired for a second time, from a part-time position of 14 years as an Associate in the Hardware Department at Walmart Supercenter in Canandaigua, NY. Don was a long-time member of The American Legion, Honeoye-Hemlock Post 1278 and enjoyed spending time with military buddies during meetings, dinners, town parades, and other gatherings. In 2019, he was chosen to go on the Honor Flight Rochester – Mission 69, a meaningful experience to him. Don held the position of Ordained Deacon for the New Hope Fellowship Fundamentalist Church in Honeoye/Hemlock, NY for many years. Shortly before his Saviour called him home, Don shared with others that he was ready to go. He delighted in vacationing with his family throughout several U.S. states and Canada. His favorite music was bluegrass and old-time gospel. After full retirement, he shared many fun-loving times with his caring wife, including local senior events and various excursions by tour bus. Don loved his family and his many, many friends. They loved him and he will be greatly missed. In keeping with Don’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A celebration of life gathering may be announced at a future date. To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com 229-2444

S E V RA Thank You I just want to thank the sweet little girl who presented me with a delicious box of cookies and beautiful card in the Wegman’s parking lot on Rte 31. That was such a surprise and genuine act of love. It was such a perfect gift as our car wouldn’t start and I was experiencing a bit of nausea from the chemo I have been receiving. Not only did she give me the lovely box of cookies, but she and her mother found someone who could help us get our car started. I hope they read this because it meant so very much to me. I was kind of in shock at the time and didn’t get to express how much it meant. I just went home and cried! There are many good people in this world and that sweet little girl and her mom are a shining example of God’s love. Thank you for renewing my faith. I will definitely pass on the love you gave me. Trunk or treat at the Elks A shout out to the Elks Lodge #24! In this day and age when we adults have to teach our children to be wary of others, you showed up big time! You did an awesome job for the kids on Saturday, Oct.22. Each car, with their thought out decorations and friendly greetings from the adults, made my grandchildren feel so welcome! You were so in the spirit of what Halloween is about; the children! Thank you! What have I missed I grew up many years ago, married and raised a family. I taught my children to love God, treat people with kindness and respect and not to judge others because you do not walk in their shoes, even if you disagree with their opinions. I rode behind a car with a bumper sticker which stated, “I vote my faith ----- ----“. What have I missed in all these years? What religion teaches ridiculing others who disagree with your opinion? Verbally or physically attacking others? And that infidelity is OK? What have I missed?

Thank you, Officer I recently went to Krown Undercoating in East Rochester to have my car undercoated. I met a younger man waiting for work on his truck in the lounge room. He commented on my Navy veteran hat and thanked me for my service. I asked him where he worked and he said he worked for the city of Rochester. I asked if it was inside or outside work. He said he was a cop and he was going in for the afternoon shift. After further discussions he said that he worked in the Clinton Ave. area of Rochester. After a few minutes, he was called away because his truck was finished. A few minutes later I was also called to get my car. When I got to the front desk they said that the last gentleman paid my $150 bill. I was blown away because I am used to paying my own way. I ended up paying it forward for another person having a truck undercoated. I really appreciated this very kind gesture from this officer and thought that it was worthy of a public thank you because police are getting a lot of negative publicity. A shout out! My local village did a trunk or treat for the first time this year and I heard it was pretty successful. I love hearing all the positivity coming from small town's activities and upgrades!

Ignoring a 4 way stop sign On the morning of Oct. 25 at 6:50 am I left my parked car across from my cousin’s house to babysit. Before I could get across the road, a car came to the stop sign, never stopped, sped up around the corner and nearly hit me. He quickly veered around me but was too close for comfort and never slowed down.

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons.

Town of East Bloomfield Mowing & Property Maintenance 2023-2024 Contract Bid packets available at: www.townofeastbloomfield.org or East Bloomfield Town Clerk’s Office 99 Main Street, PO Box 85 East Bloomfield, NY 14443 All Bid Packets must be received by the Town Clerk’s Office no later than Wednesday, November 30th at 12:00 noon. Accepted bids will be publicly opened on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at 10:00 AM.

Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com.

Helping a “Found” Cat Get Home DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My friend found an orange cat matching the description on a paper flyer posted on a nearby telephone pole. However, the email address listed on the flyer keeps coming back as “invalid,” so she has no way to contact the owner. What else can she do to return the cat to its rightful owner? -- Jimmy V., via email

Plan a day t o shop local f airs, shops & st ands Crafts, jew elry and décor: Include a trip to a craft fair, w here local vendors come together to display and sell their w ares, on your w eekend schedule. Handcrafted items make thoughtful and unique gifts, w hich can be tucked aw ay for giving later in the year. Booths at these types of events tend to be diverse. Spend the day strolling tow n squares or closed-off city centers, and you may find some handfashioned jew elry or home-crafted artisanal soaps. Those eager to enhance their homes’ décor may find unique items like painted signs, knit afghans and much more.

The first thing to do is to contact nearby shelters and veterinarian’s offices and tell them that you’ve found a lost cat but cannot contact the owner. They may have you bring in the cat to scan for a microchip -- the best way to identify pets and reunite them with their owners when a collar and tag are lost. Or they may ask for a description and have you email a photo of the cat so they can put up a “found” flyer in their lobby. Chances are, if the owner has already put up flyers, they have probably been checking with shelters regularly to see if their cat has been reported found or has turned up there.

Chances are, you’ll locate the owner locally, but getting the word out as far and as wide as possible will help reunite that cat with its owner. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. ●

Honoring our Community’s Military Veterans Display at East Bloomfield Historical Society BY K A I T L I N D O N N A N

W

alking along the display case and exhibits of the East Bloomfield Historical Society places its visitors back in time, with a focus on local individuals and their hand in history. Dating back to World War II, the displays feature uniforms, photos, and more, allowing visitors to work their way through the years and various conflicts local servicemen and women were involved in, just in time for Veterans Day. “We have uniforms, flags, photos, a WAV uniform, and more,” said Judi Stewart, a historian at the East Bloomfield Historical Society. “We also have two sealed trunks and are opening them some 60 years later to a treasure trove of artifacts.” Cheryl Walters, an East Bloomfield History Society Trustee, is spearheading the exhibit, and through a series of interviews and compiling biographies of military experience, stories will put visitors in Pearl Harbor on boats, sitting in Hyde Park with Winston Churchill, and even delve into moments in Vietnam. “When you can put their biographies with the uniforms of individual people, suddenly visitors can really see what their family members did, and that is such a rich, wonderful experience,” Stewart said. “Cheryl has been in contact with families who have members who fought in or went to war. People really want their family members represented here.”

Another artifact recently acquired by the East Bloomfield History Society is an unpublished book entitled A Promise Kept, written by Sgt. Wayne Raulerson and his niece, Dr. Melissa Call, by Sgt. Henry “Hank” Trickey. Written about the Battle of Hamburger Hill in Vietnam from May 10th-20th, 1969, A Promise Kept documents a platoon’s experience in combat and a promise that whoever survived would visit their fallen brothers’ graves. Sgt. Raulerson did just that, seeking out his camrades’ families and leaving a quarter on each of his fallen brothers’ headstones. “A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier’s family know someone stopped by to pay their respects,” said Stewart. “If you leave a penny, it means you visited. A nickel means you trained at boot camp together and a dime means you served together. A quarter is significant because it means you were there when that solider was killed.” A Promise Kept tells the story of soldiers killed in action or MIA, sharing their last words and giving them closure. Sgt. Raulerson wrote his story at the behest of his niece and, through Sgt. Trickey, donated a copy of his book to the East Bloomfield Historical Society in honor of Army Specialist Four Joseph Williams of West Bloomfield, NY, who was killed in action at Hamburger Hill on May 18, 1969.

Sgt. Trickey, a Bloomfield native and good friend of Sgt. Raulerson, is a former member of the 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles”, and Second Battalion-502nd Infantry and was stationed in the A Shau Valley during the Vietnam War. “I remember when the Vietnam War was taking place,” said Stewart. “The conflicts we’ve had tend to feel far away and abstract, but physically being able to see what took place in the past connects it more with reality. The exhibit tells a story, and that is important.” Today, many veterans still do not wish to discuss their experiences in combat and what they’ve endured. “We still have people coming back without the support they need. We do not always pay tribute to these people and thank them like we should.” “We have so many Veterans who have never talked about their experiences with their family members,” Walters said. “We need to reach out to them, and the younger generation needs to know what happened. More people thank Veterans now than they did when they came back from Vietnam.” Walters also states people need to learn more about all service members involved. “We do not know a lot about the women in service; they (and medics) were right out there in the combat area with the soldiers. They saved numerous lives. What they did was not for nothing.” “Honoring our Community’s Military” will run between now and Veterans Day, showcasing over 40 uniforms from WWII to present, over 70 biographies of community soldiers, military artifacts including service medals, helmets, field and personal gear, letters to home, photographs, and other memorabilia. The East Bloomfield Historical Society will be hosting a luncheon on November 10th for all local Veterans free of charge. Sgt. Henry “Hank” Trickey will also host a speech at the Bloomfield Central School auditorium on November 10th at 7:00pm with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

NOTABLE AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSICIANS Dinah Washington - A singer, Washington has been called “the most popular Black female recording artist of the 1950s.” She achieved success during a time of turmoil when the recording industry wasn’t necessarily friendly toward women or African American performers. Her work would help open up opportunities for other female Black singers.

Taking a Tetanus Vaccine With an Allergy Requires Careful Monitoring --DEAR DR. ROACH: I was told by my doctor that I need

a tetanus booster shot, but when I was 17, I cut my foot and needed stitches. I was told then that I was allergic to the tetanus shot, so they gave me penicillin instead. Of course, that was a long time ago, since I’m now 81 years old. How could they have determined I was allergic to the shot, and is that even reliable? Can I be tested now? Or do I even need to be tested? -- M.N. ANSWER: Reactions to vaccines are common, but they were much more common 64 years ago, when the purity of vaccines was far less than what it is now. One reaction that was common in the 1950s is called an Arthus reaction, which causes painful swelling at the injection site within a few hours -- the worst swelling usually occuring around 24 hours later, and then slowly decreasing. You are unlikely to get that type of allergic reaction because of better vaccines, and because it has been so many years since you’ve taken the vaccine. Very few people get anaphylactic reactions. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening condition, which often starts with skin symptoms such as hives or swelling; respiratory symptoms such as nasal congestion, discharge or the sensation of the throat closing; gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain; and cardiovascular symptoms such as dizziness and fainting. Any history of anaphylaxis prevents you from getting the same trigger (vaccine or medication) again, if it can be helped. Only a careful history of your symptoms at the time of the allergic reaction you had can provide an answer on which type of reaction it was. Blood testing for allergic reactions is not 100% reliable. If you haven’t had a tetanus vaccine in over 60 years, the decision to get one now really is a judgment call based on your likelihood of exposures. If you do a lot of gardening or hiking, it may be worthwhile to give you a vaccine with careful monitoring. If you were to develop a tetanus-prone wound, such as a deep wound that comes into contact with soil or manure, you would be recommended tetanus immunoglobulin as well as a tetanus vaccine. Penicillin alone is not effective in preventing tetanus: Meticulous wound cleaning is critical, in addition to the shots. ***

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Use proper form when exercising. Improper form can lead to injury and/or muscle fatigue. Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GINGERBREAD GOODNESS Gingerbread is a broad term that can describe anything from a firm and crispy cookie to a moist, soft cake. Traditionally, gingerbread is seasoned with ginger, cloves, nutmeg, and other aromatic spices. Molasses and brown sugar counteract the spice with sweetness. North Americans have been baking gingerbread in various shapes or forms for more than 200 years, and the recipes even pre-date the American revolution. However, gingerbread dates back even further to the Shakespearean era, with The Bard having mentioned it in one of his plays. Gingerbread’s name can be trace to medieval England and once referred to any kind of preserved ginger. The term went on to reference ginger-flavored cakes in the 15th century, and gingerbread eventually became popular throughout the world. Even though gingerbread cakes and cookies have been made for centuries, Germans are often credited with creating gingerbread houses, according to Smithsonian. They were probably modeled after the witch’s candy cottage in the German fairy tale, “Hansel and Gretel.” Even though gingerbread can be made any time of year, it is particularly associated with the Christmas season, with gingerbread men and other fanciful shapes turning up on cookie platters. Apply online: continentalschoolofbeauty.edu/jobs EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce. As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects. Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads.
