MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 7, 1787, in Dover, Delaware, the U.S. Constitution is unanimously ratified by all 30 delegates to the Delaware Constitutional Convention, making Delaware the first state of the modern United States. Government under the U.S. Constitution took effect on March 4, 1789.
BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

UNIQUE WAYS TO REDUCE CANCER RISK EVERY DAY Drink more fluids. Drinking more fluids is one of the easier things people can do every day to reduce their cancer risk. The American Cancer Society recommends individuals consume eight cups of water per day, but millions likely fall far short of that amount. That’s unfortunate, as research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research in 2011 found that high fluid intake was associated with a 24 percent reduced bladder cancer risk among men. In addition, a separate study funded by the Strauss Institute and published in 2020 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that women with breast cancer consumed less water and total fluids than women who did not have breast cancer. The researchers concluded more investigation into the link between drinking more water and reducing breast cancer risk is necessary, but noted that drinking water is harmless, convenient and beneficial to many aspects of health.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been told at the age of 70 that I am in the early stages of the eye disease macular degeneration. The doctor told me to take PreserVision AREDS 2 vitamins. He said that I will be taking them for the rest of my life. I started them immediately, and a few nights later, I started having severe left leg cramps to the point where I woke out of a sound sleep to jump out of bed and shake off the cramp. Is this typical? -- C.L. ANSWER: For the dry form of age-related macular degeneration, the AREDS and AREDS2 vitamins are the usual treatment. Although they are not a cure, they do slow progression of the disease. My experience with these has been that they almost never cause side effects, and muscle cramping is not a reported side effect by the manufacturer. The timing, however, certainly is suspicious. You can try stopping them for a few days, then restarting them to see if the cramps are truly affected by the vitamins. If they are, you have two choices. The first is to deal with cramps the same way that people who get them at night for no particular reason deal with it, which is by getting regular moderate exercise and stretching the calf and hamstring muscles before bed. Having weight on the toes is a trigger for many people, so very light bed covers that aren’t tucked in can be surprisingly helpful. I’ve had a few readers come up with devices to keep all weight off of their toes in bed. Your second option is to discuss an alternative with your eye professional. The AREDS and AREDS2 formulas were shown to be helpful, but some eye professionals only choose a few components of the formula.

THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT What’s so bad about belly fat? Seeing belly fat as a merely cosmetic concern overlooks the effects it has on overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic, belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below the skin known as subcutaneous fat. Belly fat also includes visceral fat, which means it extends to deep inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat in the belly is very close to the liver, which can turn it into cholesterol. From there, the fat goes through the bloodstream and may collect along the walls of the arteries, potentially contributing to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The complications of atherosclerosis depends on which arteries are affected, but they can include an assortment of diseases that affect the arteries and a greater risk for aneurysms and chronic kidney disease. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat is just as harmful for the heart as high blood pressure and smoking. So while efforts to reduce belly fat may initially be embraced to improve appearance, individuals should know that reducing fat in their midsections also can reduce their risk for a host of conditions, some of which are deadly.

According to a University of Surrey study published in Science Daily, pollution levels inside of cars were found to be 40 percent higher while sitting in traffic jams or at red lights compared to levels in free-flowing traffic. The World Health Organization considers interior car pollution one of the top 10 health risks faced by humans. Health implications are not the only hazard posed by traffic jams. Stop-and-go traffic also takes its toll on vehicles. When idling, engine ventilation systems are at their weakest, warns Road and Travel. As a result, acidic combustion products and incompletely burned fuel in the engine can start to form engine deposits. Over time, such deposits may clog fuel injectors and interfere with the flow of fuel to the combustion chamber. Traffic can age vehicle engines and their braking systems. Using brake fluid and oils for extreme driving conditions may help prevent some damage. Avoiding rush hour is another way to improve personal health and safeguard the condition of the vehicle.

I
n the heart of Rochester, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Court Street undergoes a magical transformation every December, thanks to the tireless efforts of Kelli Marsh, Jenna Knauf, and Sean McCarthy. Their collective brainchild, Roc Holiday Village, has become a cherished tradition, filling the city with the warmth of Christmas cheer. However, behind the festive spectacle lies a deeply personal connection for Kelli Marsh, a Rochester native with a profound love for her community and a passion for creating lasting holiday memories. For Marsh, the roots of Roc Holiday Village trace back to her own childhood, where visits with family to Santa left an indelible mark. Her subsequent travels around the world exposed her to the grandeur of Christmas markets in France, Germany, and New York City, planting the seed for her desire to bring that same enchantment back to her hometown. For Marsh, Roc Holiday Village is not just an event; it’s a reflection of nostalgia and commitment to infuse the holiday spirit into the heart of Rochester. As a mother, Marsh hopes to create for her son the same magical experiences she treasured as a child. Her vision extends beyond personal nostalgia; she says she, Knauf, and McCarthy wanted to revitalize downtown Rochester during the winter season, filling the void left by the closure of Midtown Plaza. “Winter in Rochester is a special time of year when the community comes together to celebrate,” Marsh says. When not working on the annual Roc Holiday Village event, she and her family actively embrace the winter spirit, hitting the slopes for skiing and snowboarding. She explains, “We make a point of embracing all the seasons Rochester has to offer. The festive season in December is particularly magical. Rochester has something for everyone, from its renowned museums to exceptional performance arts experiences, making it an ideal winter destination.”
Among festival highlights, Marsh says her personal favorite is Santa’s Workshop. Transforming it into a magical and inclusive space, the workshop caters to visitors of all ages. Marsh emphasizes the significance of creating an event where elements are free, accessible, and diverse. “It’s a place where everyone feels welcome and happy,” she says, underlining the importance of representation accessibility, including a Black Santa and a Santa who communicates using American Sign Language. Marsh says, “What I love most is seeing the children’s faces light up with joy while they visit us. It’s a place where everyone feels welcome and happy!” As the coordinator of Roc Holiday Village, Marsh’s role extends far beyond the festive season. Describing the year-round planning process, she notes the challenges of scheduling, booking special events, ordering supplies, and creating bespoke keepsakes. However, with a dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and crucial sponsor support, the event comes to life, year after year. Roc Holiday Village coordinators aim to continue providing the same magical experiences visitors have come to love over the years. In its fifth year, the event now includes The Giving Cup: Hot Cocoa for a Cause, where representatives from local non-profits serve cocoa and coffee to raise money for their charities. Also featured this year is a private Igloo Inn that offers guests an exclusive space to overlook the ice rink. Roc Holiday Village partnered with Rohrbach Brewing Company this year for an exclusive beer flavor called Village Lager. Silent Discos on the outdoor ice rink and an expanded selection of free arcade games add to the activities to keep the family entertained and mesmerized. Don’t Eat Then To the person who felt the need to bash your local farmers over….. mud…. you reamed out farmers over mud. Farmers are under more than enough pressure already, with an alarming percentage of American farms going out of business year after year after year. Only a small percentage consistently make a profit. If you want them to get out and pick up dirt, expect to pay them more for it. If you still don’t get it, grow your own. Quit being entitled, eat the food they grew for you, and be grateful. More Being Added I see more junk and vehicles are being added to the Historical Area? I am not sure why this is OK. I know of many people that have contacted the village about this area. Is anything being done? As some residents are afraid to say anything because of the connections involved. When people are driving thru the area this is what they are seeing. Do we want this to be seen as a junk area? Are there any regulations regarding storing vehicles, boats, RV’s, containers? When the village board is asked, they say they will look into it, but never give a response on why this area is OK to be treated as a junkyard. Some residents take pride in their surroundings and village, while others say they do, but take advantage of their so-called liberties. Can we please clean up the historical site? Garbage is garbage no matter who or what it is!!

All singers are heartily invited to join in singing this wonderful Christmas music, concluding with the magnificent “Halleluiah Chorus.” Scores will be provided, as well as refreshments between the rehearsal and the performance. HONEOYE FALLS The Honeoye Falls Community Concert Band will perform two holiday-themed Winter Concerts. On Saturday, December 9th, at 7:30 PM at the HFL Middle School Auditorium (619 Quaker Meeting House Road) the band will be joined by the Honeoye Falls First Presbyterian Church Bell Choir to present a festive set of holiday pieces. Then, on Sunday, December 10th, at 2:00 PM in the afternoon, the band will play at St. Catherine of Siena Church in the Mendon hamlet (26 Mendon-Ionia Road). All are welcome! ppy Jumping puppy sing is embarassing his owner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time someone comes to visit or says hello at the park, my puppy, Jake, jumps up and tries to lick their face. It’s embarrassing, and I don’t know how to stop it. Can you help? -- Sean in Providence, Rhode Island DEAR SEAN: Jumping up is a common problem for dog owners (for dogs, not so much; they love it). So much so that it’s one of the first things a trainer addresses with an owner. What you’ll need to do is to improve Jake’s overall response to commands as well as train him not to jump on people. Here’s how you do it, step by step: 1. Train the “sit,” “stay” and “come here” commands every day, at home and at the park. Teach him to walk on the leash calmly at your side. 2. Work with a companion who will ring the doorbell from outside, while you command Jake to sit after the bell sounds. 3. Put Jake on a leash. Answer the door to the companion; when Jake tries to jump up, tug the leash once and command him to sit. Remember to use positive reinforcement during training -- lots of praise, with a treat when he follows a command correctly. Avoid negative enforcement like scolding, yelling or hauling on the leash. Jake will not be perfectly behaved for some time; you should keep his leash attached at home when you expect visitors. If he gets overexcited when a visitor arrives and he won’t sit, take him to his crate or another room until he calms down. Even after he masters the training and is better behaved at home and on the leash, you’ll need to train him regularly so that he doesn’t slip back into his jumping-up habit.

So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.
