One of the most recognizable symbols of the holiday season, Christmas trees can be seen in private homes, public spaces and many prominent locations beginning each December. Christmas trees come in all shapes and sizes, and families may prefer certain types of trees, including aromas, needle types and fullness. Christmas trees have a diverse history. In seed-time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy. ~ William Blake

Displaying trees in water in a traditional reservoir type stand is the most effective way of maintaining their freshness and minimizing needle loss problems.

Thank you, City Workers! On Dec. 4th, to the city workers of Canandaigua: Thank you for remaking two crosswalks on Main Street at Wood Library and at the Congressional Church. They are beautiful! I would also like to thank them for their conscientiousness as I was in a wheeled vehicle and they had to close off a portion of the sidewalk. I went into the street to carefully go around the trucks, and a worker moved the cones over so I would have more room to safely pass around them. Thank you for your awareness and consideration for my safety. Thank you, Town of Sweden! Thank you to the Town of Sweden for allotting funds to repair the town highway

department parking lot. The highway department workers did a great job! I especially love the new American Flag display. In these difficult times, it is important that we honor our flag in an appropriate way. Thank you again. - A White Road neighbor Juanita of Tops in Hamlin It is always a pleasure to go to your checkout line. Not only are you efficient in your job, but you are personable, which means a lot these days. When I get in your line, it is like having a chat with a friend. We share our laughs, and you also hear my grievances, not skipping a beat, while carrying on and ringing up my groceries. I know you will know who this is, but I

think it is high time that I share my appreciation for your going above and beyond your job description. Thank you for your diligence in doing your job as well as for also making it a pleasant experience when someone needs to check out! Thank you, Laura! Thank you, Laura, for taking the time to deliver the package you found on County Road 37 that should have been delivered to County Road 40. Blessings due your way! Thanks for Breakfast! Many thanks to the person who paid for our breakfast at Brockport’s Golden Eagle on December 11th. The Christmas Spirit still abounds.

Driving Disaster Congratulations to the woman on [local road] the other day. I didn’t see you kill anyone, which is good, but I saw you weaving in and out of your lane. When I passed you, you had your head down looking at your lap. Shame on you! Then when you got up to the cutoff, you aimed for one road while staying in the left-hand lane. Unfortunately, there was a truck in your way. No problem for you. You went to the left of the truck in the grass and tore off a piece of your car in the back from hitting the guard rail. You got off at [local road] and continued straight with your driver’s rear end dragging. I hope I never see you again, and if I do, I’m getting off the highway and walking. It’s safer.

PETS AND HOLIDAY GIFTING Furry, finned and feathered friends help make a house a home. These companions are more than just pets; they’re often cherished family members. So it should come as no surprise that, come the holidays, people want to lavish extra attention on their animals by way of presents. The American Pet Products Association says pet owners spend billions of dollars on their pets each year. The majority of pet owners plan to gift their pets on holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas. DogTime.com says that pet presents are not a North American phenomenon, either. Pet owners in the United Kingdom are expected to spend the equivalent of $46 U.S. per pet on gifts.

Christmas Shop the traditional way At Springwater Amish Workshop you’ll be able to view the size, feel the finishes and look at the quality before you buy.

While dog owners are more likely to buy their pets gifts, cat owners have been closing that gap over the years. Some pet parents even offer Christmas cards or hang Christmas stockings for their pets. According to data from PricewaterhouseCoopers, shoppers between the ages of 17 and 21 are willing to spend more than anyone else ($70) on holiday gifts for their pets.

You can either take your purchase with you or we’ll store until Christmas. We’ll store your lawn items until Spring.

Gifting pets has become the norm, but various animal welfare organizations advise that giving companion animals as pets should be avoided. Pets given as gifts may be at a higher risk for surrender to shelters by families who miscalculated the amount of time and money that’s necessary to care for pets. Welcoming a pet into the family is often a personal decision, and one that should be weighed carefully by all members of the household.

SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. THE HISTORY OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, also created the first strand of electric lights that would be used in holiday decorating. By 1880, Edison had standard incandescent light bulbs well sorted out and desired a way to better advertise his invention, so he decided to make the most of the holiday season and put his light bulbs on display. According to a 2003 article in American Heritage magazine titled “The Wizard of Your Christmas Tree,” Edison strung incandescent bulbs all around the compound of his Menlo Park, NJ, laboratory. Edison constructed an eight-mile underground wiring system in order to power this grand light display. Because the laboratory was situated along the railroad that passed between Manhattan and Philadelphia, thousands of people were able to see the display. The concept of electric holiday lights took a bit of time to catch on. Edison’s friend and associate Edward Johnson was tasked with stringing together colored lights in 1882 and placing them on an evergreen tree. Johnson hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs. In 1895, President Grover Cleveland requested the White House family Christmas tree be illuminated by multi-colored electric light bulbs. In 1903, when General Electric began to offer pre-assembled kits of holiday lights, stringed lights were reserved for the wealthy and electrically savvy. For example, in 1903 a single string of electric lights cost $12, or around $300 today. It would take several more years before holiday lights became a national tradition. On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the country’s celebration of Christmas by lighting the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse located south of the White House with 3,000 electric lights. Today, illuminated strands of lights have become a large part of holiday celebrations and have even been adopted for use during various year-round events. Such lights can be a beautiful and festive addition to many celebrations.

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES MADE SIMPLE Recycle leftover cookies. If you have a fair amount of cookies remaining or several that broke apart or do not look good enough to serve, never fear. Such cookies can be used as part of another delicious dessert. Grind cookies into crumbs that can serve as a pie crust for pudding pies or nobake cheesecakes, or mix cookie crumbs with cake frosting or a nut butter and roll into balls. Dunk the balls into melted chocolate, add a lollipop stick and make delicious cookie pops. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Getting Through Winter Cold weather is here ... joining the coronavirus and the flu. Such a wonderful trio of events all at the same time. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says that temperatures this winter will be a bit warmer for much of the country, at least for the eastern portion. The other Farmer’s Almanac divides the country in a different way, with the north half of the country seeing the cold. We didn’t want to go outside anyway, did we? This winter especially we need to do all we can to stay healthy. If you live in an especially cold area that’s likely to get a lot of snow and ice, find someone to take care of it and be sure you’re on their storm list. Arrange for prescriptions to be sent by mail from the pharmacy. Stock up on batteries for flashlights. Remember to keep your cellphone charged at all times. Try to stock up on heavy or large items from the grocery store, ideally from curbside pickup. A box of canned goods and extra toilet paper will keep you from having to scramble at the last minute. Don’t try to save money by keeping the temperatures in your house too low. Seniors especially can get into trouble with hypothermia before we even know it. Aim for indoor temperatures of 68 F to 70 F, and put on a sweater! One of the biggest things you can do to stay safe this winter is sign up with the seniors daily check-in, a phone call you’ll receive either from the town or senior center to make sure you’re OK. Or create your own phone tree with friends to check in every day.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

NEW ENERGY STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES TO SUPPORT RENEWABLES POST COVID-19 (NAPSI) — Cleaner air can improve public health, maybe even save lives. Fortunately, renewable energy resources—wind, sun, hydropower and the like—are now producing more electricity than coal. That’s where innovative energy storage solutions come in. They help create a cleaner world, encouraging investment into clean, green, renewable energy. To help, engineers and policymakers are increasingly turning their attention to energy storage solutions. New bi-partisan efforts in states such as New York and the Trump administration are in alignment to support new energy storage technologies that drastically improve the economics of wind and solar projects. The global rise in electricity generation from renewable sources has led to increased demand for advanced batteries that can be used to firm up this intermittent supply. This requirement is particularly important in areas where grid connections may be tenuous, unreliable or even non-existent. Additional demand for advanced batteries is presented by grid applications such as peak-shifting and Transmission and Distribution (T&D) capital deferral. Energy storage systems provide many ways to manage the power supply for a more resilient energy infrastructure, and bring cost savings to utilities and consumers. Batteries allow the use of electricity whenever it’s needed, not only when it’s generated. However, traditional battery economics and performance have not proved helpful as utilities look to increase renewable penetration through long-duration energy storage. The Problem One of the challenges to growing a North American energy storage industry, however, has been a dependency on a supply chain of hardware components, metals and chemicals, many of which come from outside North America. As well, metals such as lithium and vanadium used in some batteries are impacted by price volatility and security of supply. An Answer Those same risks do not apply to zinc-air batteries. Zinc is abundant and inexpensive, with a significant North American supply. Its chemistry is robust and safe. A zinc-air battery has decoupled energy and power, making it one of the lowest-cost longduration battery storage solutions available. A safer, cleaner future requires less polluted air which means replacement of carbonbased power generation with renewable, sustainable sources of electricity. Longduration, low-cost energy storage systems such as zinc-air will be a key driver to a quicker path towards a greener future. A “bet” on energy storage is a wager that will deliver a cleaner planet that will thrive for current and future generations, suggests Ron MacDonald, president and CEO of Zinc8 Energy Solutions, the leader in zinc-air battery technology, a unique flow battery technology using zinc and air as fuel. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Prostate-Shrinking Medicines and Cancer ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve had low-grade prostate cancer for several years and am presently on “active surveillance.” My PSAs have been high but steady, running around 7.8 to 9.2. I have a greatly enlarged prostate, which I believe contributes to the high PSA numbers. I would like your opinion regarding finasteride (Proscar), as I am considering taking it. I see one of its side effects is that it increases the risk of developing a very serious form of prostate cancer. Since I already have this cancer, am I at an increased risk of mine growing more aggressive? -- D.N.W. ANSWER: A 2013 study showed that although finasteride reduced the overall risk of prostate cancer from 15% to 10% in men followed up to 18 years on finasteride, there was a small increase in high-grade, aggressive prostate cancer, from 3% to 3.5%. However, there was no increased risk of prostate cancer death among treated men. Several follow-up studies have suggested that the apparent small increase in aggressive prostate cancers reflected an easier ability to find these cancers, since finasteride shrinks prostate tissue, making it easier to both biopsy and read the results. My view is that the apparent increase in aggressive prostate cancer is unlikely to represent a real danger in taking finasteride. There is no evidence to suggest that finasteride would change the behavior of an existing tumor.

DEAR CHERYL: That’s your call. You know your pets. In addition to the size of the gathering, you should consider the personalities of your guests: Are any of them timid or afraid around pets, and would anyone be upset if your dog starts barking? The big question here is how many strangers each of your pets can handle. Rabbits, for example, are very susceptible to stress and should be kept in a quiet spot and not handled too much by visitors. A calm, well-socialized dog may be able to handle the influx of people. Same with your cat, who will simply disappear to a hiding spot if things get a little overwhelming. Even though it’s a smaller crowd this year, make a plan and share it. How much time should the pets spend with visitors around? When should they be placed in a separate area? (During dinner or when presents are opened, for example.) If a pet shows signs of stress, such as barking, yelping, meowing, hissing or growling, who will grab them and take them to the quiet spot to calm down? When everyone knows the strategy, they can act quickly to keep the party calm and pets healthy and safe. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This year, we are only going to have a few family members over on Christmas Day. In past years, I’ve put our dog, cat and rabbit in the back of the house with plenty of water and beds to sleep in, so the noise and lights and strange people don’t stress them out. I feel like we can safely keep the pets in their usual spots this year because there will only be eight people here for dinner and presents. What do you think? Cheryl in Lake City, Florida

You’re a Mean One, 2020!

Bring Back These 5 Victorian Traditions & Keep your Inner Grinch at Bay By Amanda K. Dudek “2020 Stink Stank Stunk” one ornament read, with the Grinch’s hand holding a bauble for effect. While blessed to have suffered only minor inconveniences from the pandemic, I understand this sentiment. It is nearly New Year’s Day, and many of us are looking forward to closing this chapter and moving on to the next. Nevertheless, the holidays await. How can we find our Christmas spirit at the end of a year which, for the most part, has been anything but holly or jolly? Approximately 90% of Americans celebrate Christmas, many of them as a secular holiday. In fact, much of what we associate with the holiday today came from the Victorian Christmas traditions introduced in the 18th and 19th centuries. After a year that would make Ebenezer Scrooge look like Santa Claus, perhaps trying one or more of these classic holiday practices will revive your Christmas spirit and boost your holiday cheer! When selecting gifts, go small: Resist the draw of the largest items during your holiday shopping. The first Nativity centers around the giving of the most meaningful of gifts. Our present day Christmas tradition of gift giving has been tied to this small but powerful gift as well as to the three gifts of the Magi for centuries. During the Victorian Era, gifts evolved from fruit, nuts, candies, small handmade items and trinkets to larger, more expensive, store-bought luxuries. While the former had typically been hung from Christmas trees, the latter had to be placed on the floor, thus giving rise to the tradition of placing presents beneath the tree. Mak I Moder: Consider browsing your local shops and boutiques for unique luxuries which are both attractive and small enough to decorate your tree. You’ll be supporting community businesses and beautifying your home at the same time! Send holiday cards by mail instead: Social distancing is still a factor, and many of us are experiencing digital fatigue. Give yourself a much-needed break. Unplug, skip the email and social media posts, and mail your loved ones real cards they can hold in their hands. Christmas cards’ existence and quick rise to popularity in the mid-to late-1800’s was likely a combination of social-economic factors and the ingenuity of Sir Henry Cole, often credited with commissioning the Christmas card. Sir Cole, an Englishman, did so in an atmosphere of much wider acceptance of Christmas celebrations in England. This is thought to be largely due to the marriage of England’s Queen Victoria to German-born Prince Albert. Germany had embraced Christmas celebrations centuries earlier. Less expensive color printing methods and dropping postage rates shortly followed. Mak I Moder: Henry Cole’s original Christmas card depicted three generations of the Cole family. Echo it by using family photos in your Christmas cards to make them truly, uniquely your own!

Make sweets & treats more fun with Christmas Crackers: It seems this Victorian tradition is alive and well in Great Britain, and it just might be one worth importing! Invented in the 1850’s by London confectioner Tom Smith, Christmas Crackers are made up of cardboard tubes wrapped in brightly-colored, festive paper twisted at both ends, resembling the bonbons with which they were once filled. Traditional Christmas Crackers contain a paper crown, intentionally corny jokes, and small gifts, candies, and other treats. These little bundles are called Christmas Crackers because they open with a bang when pulled at both ends. Traditionally, guests around the Christmas table are meant to hold one end of their own Christmas Cracker in their right hand while the person to their left grabs the other end. At the same time each guest must cross their left hand over their right to grab the other end of the cracker belonging to the neighbor on their right. This creates a sort of crisscrossed arms “chain” around the table. Then, family and friends all pull the Christmas Crackers at once, creating a chorus of pops and flurry of gifts. Mak I Moder: Choose from a surprising variety of Christmas Crackers, ranging greatly in content and expense. It is worth noting that some are designed for children while others are geared for adults. Make Yourself a Bowl of Wassail: First, it’s simply fun to say! Wassail, pronounced wah-sul, was a hot, spiced or mulled beverage - typically hard cider, ale, or wine - served to guests, especially after caroling, to warm them from the winter chill. It was not uncommon to flavor the wassail with spices such as nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon sticks while sweetening it with brown sugar and whole baked apples. Mak I Moder: When preparing wassail for your next holiday get together, be sure it is both warm and spiced when selecting a recipe. For a tropical twist, combine cider, dark rum, and baked pineapple chunks, and for a family-friendly wassail, skip the spirits and use only regular apple cider instead. Do a little Christmas jig: Believe it or not, dancing has a long association with Christmas celebrations. Families, friends, neighbors, and even businesses would throw holiday parties which commonly included food, drink, music and dancing. Guests might dance the waltz, the Polka, a country-dance or any number of other popular options. Mak I Moder: We certainly will not be throwing any holiday dances or get togethers this year. However, with many families staying home on Christmas, this is the perfect opportunity to crank up the holiday tunes and join in with your kids in some sweet dance moves for a family rock around the Christmas tree. After all, it’s a Christmas tradition! ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 23, 1620, one week after the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth harbor in present-day Massachusetts, construction of the first permanent European settlement in New England begins. The term “Pilgrim” was derived from a manuscript in which Gov. Bradford spoke of the “saints” who traveled to the New World as “pilgrimes.” EMPLOYMENT

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * B.B. in Massachusetts writes: “I have a rubber disc (used for taking covers off jars) that I keep in my shower. When showering, I put the disc over the drain so the water can accumulate, then I soak my feet at the same time.” * To save yourself some time and aggravation, make a safety set of keys that match your current set exactly. You will never have to go looking for your keys when you are in a hurry, and you won’t have to determine if the key you need is on the ring. It is! * “Re: your recent tip about storing heirloom quilts in a cedar chest: No, no, a thousand times no! Nothing is worse for quilts -- heirloom or otherwise -- than storing them in cedar chests. Acids will not only stain them but break down the fabric over time.” -- B.R. in Washington. Thanks B.R. Although my grandmother did store quilts and other fabric items in her cedar chest, according to sources at the National Quilters Circle, the best place for an heirloom quilt may be on a bed. You can stack them, but rotate so that no quilt gets too much sun. -- JoAnn * “For squeaky door hinges, forget about graphite, WD-40 or any of those other messy lubricants that may last for only a few months. Pull the hinge pins, wipe them clean with a dry rag, and then apply a thin coating of Vaseline with your finger. Properly done, your hinges should remain free of squeaks for at least a year.” -- F.B. in Colorado EMPLOYMENT

Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
