HOW TO ENJOY A MORE ECO-FRIENDLY WINTER
Use residual heat to your advantage. Open the bathroom door after taking a steamy shower and let that warm, moist air make its way to other rooms in the house. After cooking or baking is done, turn off the oven but leave the door open to warm the kitchen and dining area without adjusting the home thermostat. Keep draperies and blinds on south- and west-facing windows wide open during the day to maximize sunlight and warmth.

Chicory & Toby
Chicory is a golden doodle and Toby is a beagle corgi. Chicory is almost 3 years old and Toby just turned 1. Toby recently joined the family in January! We love to play and fight over toys. We drive mom and dad bonkers, but they love us with all their hearts. Chicory is the sassy older sister and Toby is that pesky little brother. We love each other and we’re inseparable. We love car rides, walks with mom, and playing with friends, family, neighbors and other dogs. We’re a handful!

DID YOU KNOW? The pinnacle of birthday celebrations, if there’s no piñata to break open, is when the birthday cake comes out and party attendees serenade the guest of honor. The song everyone harmonizes to is among the most widely recognized and well-loved tunes in the world. The “birthday song,” also known as “Happy Birthday to You,” is in the public domain in the United States and the European Union. The song originally was penned as a classroom greeting song titled “Good Morning to All,” written by sisters Mildred J. Hill and Patty Smith Hill. Both were educators and developed unique teaching strategies to assist students. The song was composed by Mildred and the lyrics were written by Patty to be used in kindergarten classrooms. It is unclear who changed the lyrics and turned the song into a birthday ditty, as none of the earliest references to the song included credits or copyright notices. Two tales circulate regarding the eventual copyright of the song. One has The Summy Company registering a copyright in 1935, crediting authors Preston Ware Orem and Mrs. R. R. Forman. The other says Jessica Hill, sister to Mildred and Patty, who was working with publisher Clayton F. Summy Company, copyrighted and published “Happy Birthday to You” in 1935.Eventually Warner Chappell bought the company that was originally The Summy Company, and argued the birthday song was under copyright until 2030, making performances of the song illegal without paying royalties. However, a federal judge ruled in 2015 that Warner Chappell’s claim to a copyright on the song was not valid. The judge ruled its registration only covered a specific piano version, not the melody and lyrics. Therefore, “Happy Birthday to You” can be sung both privately and publicly without being subject to royalties or other restrictions.

A Handful of Dog Treats Help the Medicine Go
Down
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a tip for the owner who is struggling to give their dog eye medicine. Our dog had cataract removal surgery earlier this year, and we’ve had to give him drops ever since. We’ve got it down! All you need are high-value treats given before, during and a er the drops. Please feel free to share my suggestion. -Jenny H. Asheville, North Carolina
DEAR JENNY: Many thanks for the advice! Making “medicine time” less stressful and more positive is so important for pets. Folks, Jenny recommended a 100% meat dog treat, which is a great high-value snack. Look for a product like this in the pet store’s fresh food aisle. Peanut butter is another fave among dogs. One of my dogs is a huge fan of Doritos. (I have to hide them.)
Here’s some more tips for giving oral medication or drops to a dog or cat:
-- Work o some of your pet’s energy beforehand. Take the dog for a walk or have your cat play with a toy.
-- Make sure the pet is held safely. Place the cat on your lap and cradle your arm around their body, placing your hand on their chest. Have the dog sit or lie down at your feet (or in your lap), facing forward or to the side.
-- Stay calm and positive. Give your pet a small treat while being encouraging and petting them.
-- Give the medication as quickly as possible. Don’t force or rush the process, but gently open their mouth and pop the pill in as far back as possible, then rub the underside of their jaw and throat to encourage swallowing. If giving eyedrops, gently li one eyelid and put in the drop, then repeat on the other side.
How do you give your pet their medication? Let us know at ask@ pawscorner.com.

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds
In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.
Bridges Of Mendon has closed a er 25 years.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful members of the Mendon/Honeoye Falls community for welcoming me with open arms. Every week we were blessed with fresh vegetables from someone’s garden, homemade quilts, community volunteers to read, chicken barbecue dinners from the re hall … e many kindnesses bestowed on Bridges from the members of this community are vast and heartwarming.
I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, every caregiver that has ever worked for me – you were the best of the best. You treated every person at Bridges like they were your family member and they thrived under your care. I am blessed to know you all.
I would also like to thank the many family members, friends and volunteers who were a wonderful, strong support of our mission.
I will never, ever forget my almost 20 years in Mendon. It was such a rich, special time in my life.

Too many accounts: A 2019 study from the credit reporting agency Experian found that the average American has four credit cards. Though many consumers can effectively manage that many cards, the more cards an individual has, the easier it can be to lose track of spending.More cards also means a greater potential for more debt,as each card has its own limit that is unrelated to the limits on other cards.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME WHEN YOU’RE AWAY
Create the impression that someone is home. Just because you’re heading off for parts unknown doesn’t mean you can’t create the impression that life is carrying on as usual within the walls of your home. Smart home technology now enables homeowners to set timers on lights and even home electronics like televisions and radios. Homeowners also can ask neighbors to pick up their mail or halt delivery until they return from their trips. Nothing says “no one’s home” as definitively as an overflowing mailbox.

The season of giving is upon us, and for many neglected and abandoned animals, there is no greater gi than that of a safe, loving home with a forever family. Adop ng a pet from a local shelter is not only giving back to your community, but saving the life of an animal in need.

Rescued Treasures Pet Adop ons in Rochester is a network of over 100 fosters and volunteers. Their passion is rescuing abandoned and homeless pets. A non-profit, their caring, compassion, and desire to serve comes straight from the heart.
Avon na ve Jennifer Evere is a Rescued Treasures six-year rescue veteran. Using her wealth of knowledge, she educates fosters, prospec ve pet owners, and store volunteers. Balancing a fullme job and a busy schedule, Evere is available for guidance a er hours and on weekends.
Fierce dedica on like Evere ’s is not uncommon among Rescued Treasures volunteers who are driven to care for the well-being of our most vulnerable animal popula ons. Sadly, it’s a common mispercep on that shelter animals suffer behavioral problems. In reality, many of them were abandoned by pet owners who could no longer financially care for them, moved out of the area, or passed away.
One of the best ways to help is to foster. Rescued Treasures’ adoptable pets are at PetSmart via their loca ons in Greece and Baytown Plaza, Webster. The rescue has also opened its new Pawsi ve Cat Café on East Avenue in Rochester.
Evere con nues to support Rescued Treasures for a reason. “It’s clear they always want to do right by the animal,” she said. Like many, Evere feels rewarded by the drama c progress she has seen in shelter pets.
“One of my favorite ones was a li le black cat named Willow,” she recalled. “She had a li er, and she was fiercely protec ve of them. Although she didn’t seem to be feral, she wanted no part of anything with humans.”
Evere ’s solu on? Pa ence. “I just gave her me to come out of her shell,” she explained. “She was at my house for a year and three months. It took her that long to come out of any trauma. A wonderful couple adopted her. Her story is a testament.”
Fostering or adop ng a shelter pet means not only that you’ll save its life, but also the life of another animal that can then be taken in. Can’t adopt or foster? There are s ll many ways you can support your local animal shelter. Take a cue from our 12 Days of Christmas Pet Shelter Wishlist!

Girl Scouts Rock!
A BIG shout out to the local Girl Scouts. I work at Temple Hill Cemetery and had worked a couple weeks blowing and lining up leaves. Then one day about 20 Scouts came by and did an amazing job of collecting leaves and hoisting them into the big town dump trucks. These ladies were like a swarm of bees! All business and nonstop high speed action. I was impressed and proud of our younger generation of women! Thank you for your service.
Shout Out for Dollar General in Retsof, NY
I ran in to Dollar General in Retsof on 11/19 to pick up a few items and had that dreaded "chip malfunction" on my credit card! I asked the clerk if she could cancel transaction so I could run to my car to see if I had cash. The guy behind me said, “Don't cancel, I don't mind waiting.” which was very nice! So I hurried out and returned very quickly to pay. The clerk handed me my bag and said “you’re good to go!” Of course I was amazed, it was the cashier who paid for my purchase, would not accept my money and said “Happy Holidays!” I was so surprised I didn't even say "I will pay it forward" to another unsuspecting person. Thank you for your generosity and making my day! #thebestdollargeneral
Thank you, Marc Mingoia!
Thanks to the great generosity of Marc Mingoia with the Howard Hanna Pittsford office. We all devoured this pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving specially delivered by Phillip Lane who actually delivered 2 of them in person to us for my grandson to have at his dinner. After a tough year and a half because of the loss of his dad, we appreciated the generosity. We were greatly surprised with the pies and we appreciate the goodness that still comes around in this world. The pies were deliciously made from Special Touch Bakery at 1999 Mt. Reed Boulevard. Making it even more special was it was my birthday! God bless everyone.
HOMETOWN PHOTOS
Cats
On a daily basis, I see responsible dog owners walk in our neighborhood. They keep their dogs on leashes. They clean after them. They license them. On a daily basis, I see cats, both feral and peoples’ pets, wander wherever they please. They are unlicensed. No one cleans up after them when they come into our yards to do their business. They are free to multiply unchecked. Why is it that cat owners do not have to follow the same rules as dog owners? Why do people continue to feed the feral cats? Wouldn’t it be better to take them into your homes? You could feed them, keep them warm, and have them spayed.
A Roof!
A roof! A pretty simple solution for the Bills stadium, especially as they plan for a new billion dollar arena that we will be partly paying for. The Bills/Browns game being moved to Detroit (Ford stadium complete with a roof.) robs Buffalo and Orchard Park of some significant revenue to boot. It’s certainly not too late to consider a roof for the Bills and for those fans who think real football is played in whatever Mother Nature throws at us, I’m sure given the choice, you’d rather be out of the elements and enjoy an NFL game that showcases talent on the field without weather distractions. And, as happy as we all are now that the Bills are in the conversation of elite status in professional football, there wouldn’t be as much pressure that they remain there if their fans could easily enjoy a football game inside.
Thanksgiving Heartbreak
To my neighbor who put a food pantry Thanksgiving food box into this morning’s trash, your wastefulness has broken my heart. I don’t know your circumstance, but I do know that there’s a Little Food Pantry just around the corner. That’s where I’ll be taking the 2 cans of green beans, 2 boxes of stuffing mix, 1 box of cornbread mix, 1 jar of apple sauce, 1 bottle of pancake syrup, 1 butternut squash, and 1 bag of potatoes, all unopened and untouched. You should be ashamed of yourself.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* Use silicone caulk to make nonskid beads on the bottom of your pet dishes. They will stay in one place instead of getting scooted all around the kitchen.
* Need a quick iron job but don’t have the time to iron? Spray a clean kitchen towel with a mixture of water and a little fabric softener until damp. Pop it in the dryer with the item that’s wrinkled. It shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to get all the wrinkles out and smell great to boot!
* While we’re on ironing tips, here’s a great one from T.C. in Alabama: “If you have mineral deposits on your iron, use a toothbrush and toothpaste (mild abrasive) to polish them off your iron’s face. Rinse with water, and next time, use distilled water for steaming.”
* “When driving a nail into a plaster wall, first put down a piece of tape at the spot where you will insert the nail. Tap the nail in right through the tape, then pull it away to discard. It often will keep the surrounding plaster from crumbling at the site of the nail.” -- W.L. in Oregon
* When your cabinet door magnet locks are too strong, try putting a piece of tape over the magnet. It decreases the strength of the magnet.
* If you paint your radiators, make sure that the paint you use is intended to be heat-resistant. To get the best finish, paint while the radiator is warm.
DID YOU KNOW?
Dogs are wildly popular pets. The American Pet Products Association says there are 63.4 million households in the United States that have a dog, and with the exception of 2002 and 2015, that number has steadily risen since 2000. Certain breeds remain especially popular among dog owners. In August 2021, the pet insurance provider Trupanion released the most popular dog breeds of 2020, and the top five breeds were:
1. Labrador retriever 2. Golden retriever 3. Goldendoodle 4. German shepherd 5. Labradoodle

If the October days were a cordial like the sub-acids of fruit, these are a tonic like the wine of iron. Drink deep or be careful how you taste this December vintage. The first sip may chill, but a full draught warms and invigorates. ~ John Burroughs, “Winter Sunshine”

YOU MAY BE ABLE TO HELP SAVE A CHILD’S LIFE
(NAPSI)—Seven-year-old Julián Morales seems like any other young boy—he loves playing video games, watching baseball, spending time with his little sister and eating chocolate ice cream—but there’s a big difference.
The Problem
Unlike most children, Julián suffers from a rare, life-threatening blood disorder. His only hope for a cure is an unrelated blood stem cell donor. “It’s very difficult because Julián can’t do everything like other children his age,” said Mayra Garcia, Julián’s mother. “We want to see our son healed. But that may not happen if we cannot find a blood stem cell match.” Julián’s search for his perfect donor is more difficult because of his Hispanic ethnicity, which is a blend of Mexican and Nicaraguan. Even at the largest and most diverse blood stem cell registry in the world, only 7 percent of the more than 19 million registry members are Hispanic. As a result, Hispanic patients fighting blood cancer such as leukemia or blood disorders have only a 46 percent chance of finding a fully matched blood stem cell donor compared to a 77 percent chance for those who are white. Because people are more likely to match someone of their same ethnic background, Julián’s family is hoping more Hispanics will join the national Be The Match Registry.
People from diverse backgrounds, particularly Hispanic or mixed ethnicities, can register to become a potential donor and help save a life. Those between the ages of 18 and 44 are most urgently needed since they’re requested by transplant doctors more than 85 percent of the time and research shows that these donors provide the greatest chance for transplant success.
What You Can Do
To be a part of the solution, visit https://join.bethematch.org/saveJulian and complete the online registration form. You’ll get a swab kit with easyto-follow instructions on how to complete the registration process at home and return the swab samples in the mail. Becoming a donor is safe, free and confidential.
How It Works
About one in every 430 U.S. Be The Match Registry members go on to donate to a patient. If someone is identified as a genetic match for a searching patient, he or she will be asked to donate blood stem cells. Most often, blood stem cell donation is a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure similar to donating platelets or plasma.

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
(NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up.
What You Can Do
1. Spend time with your children.
2. Be a positive role model.
3. Send a text to stay connected when far away.
4. Read to your children.
5. Remember #DadJokesRule!
There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2
What Dads are Already Doing
Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved:
• 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3
• 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4
• 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5
• Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6
• Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7
Eventhoughfathersarelargelymoreinvolvedthaninpreviousgenerations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8
To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign.
“All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated.
The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment.

Workout Goals for 2023?
We love our new exercise coach. is is the young student who used us as guinea pigs for a college class project, graduated and has now been hired by the senior center as our permanent workout guru. It’s only been a month, and already we want to make him Employee of the Year.
Somehow he managed to convince the town to spend large dollars to out t a space in the rec center dedicated to workout equipment for seniors. But we haven’t just been turned loose with all that fancy new gear. Coach has required that we all have a personal session with him wherein he will instruct us on each machine and ll out our personal goal sheet with the weights and repetitions for each one. Periodically he will stalk through the room, instruct on posture, scrutinize someone’s goal sheet and ensure the machine’s weight is set correctly.
e bonus for us is that the cost per month is less than one-quarter the amount charged by the regular gyms in our area.
Is a gym workout in your plans for 2023? While you might not be lucky enough to have a personal coach and a brand-new dedicated-for-seniors exercise room at your rec center, you still might be able to join a gym near you.
Do you qualify for a low-cost SilverSneakers tness membership through your Medicare advantage or supplemental plan? Many plans have this bene t (standard Medicare does not), and over 17,000 gyms across the country participate.
If you nd a local gym (don’t forget about the YMCA), ask whether a tness expert will show you how each machine works and to generate an exercise plan for you. It’s o en included in the membership.
One bonus to signing up for a gym membership at this time of year is that gyms frequently o er discounts for the new year.

Better Function in Bathrooms
and
Often when people develop mobility or dexterity issues, they find their existing bathrooms are not in a convenient location in the house, or aren’t configured with safety in mind. They may need to add a bathroom in a small space or reconfigure the ones they have. When renovating an existing bath or creating a new bathroom where one did not previously exist, homeowners should keep key considerations in mind.
Multiple light sources can help reduce glare and shadows - two dangerous visual effects in bathrooms, where most home falls occur. Flooring material should be slip-resistant and grab bars are essential in showers, bath tubs and near toilets. Shower heads should be on a slide bar that allows the spray to be raised or lowered depending on the needs and height of the user. Showers and faucets should be controlled by levers, rather than knobs, and all showers should have thermostatic controls to reduce the risk of burns.

Whether you’re adding a half bath in a corner of your master bedroom where no bathroom existed before, or replacing a high step-over tub with a roll-in shower, traditional plumbing can be costly - especially in homes with slab foundations and no readily accessible below-floor drainage. Decade-Long High Lymphocyte Count Isn’t a Cause for Concern
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female and almost 75 years old. My vital signs are always normal, and I am active, but slightly overweight. I get quarterly blood draws, and every reading is in the normal range except for the lymphocytes. That count is higher, just outside the normal range (the lab’s range is 850 to 3,900 cells/uL, and my absolute lymphocytes are 4,377 cells/uL). This has occurred in the blood draws from the last two or three years, with the exception of one that was back in the normal range. About 12 years ago, after several abnormal results, I saw a hematologist, who reported nothing wrong after doing more extensive blood work. No reason could be given for it. I am concerned, but not obsessing over it. Is there any reason you can give for the slightly high lymphocyte count? -- S.M.
ANSWER: Lymphocytes are one of the two major types of white blood cells found in the blood (the other are the granulocytes, the most common of which are the neutrophils). High levels of lymphocytes raise suspicion for serious blood disorders such as some leukemias, lymphomas and related blood diseases, but there are other causes. Acute stress can do it, but you have been living with this for many years. Not having a spleen causes high levels of lymphocytes, whether you are born without one or have it surgically removed. Chronic infection is another reason.
I suspect your hematologist did a more sophisticated set of tests looking for blood disorders, and the fact that your level is the same after 12 years also supports my suspicion that this level is normal for you. Normal levels are generally defined as what is found in people without evidence of disease 95% of the time. So, by definition, 5% of normal people will have their result on any given lab fall outside of the normal range. Since yours is just outside of the normal range and, as I said, unchanged for years, I think you can relax your level of anxiety. Periodic blood tests do seem prudent, however, and further testing would be recommended in the event that the count starts getting higher or you develop any new symptoms. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

CARE SCREENINGS FOR MEN
BETWEEN
THE AGES OF 18 AND 39
Diabetes: Risk factors and warning signs will dictate if men between the ages of 18 and 39 require diabetes screening. For example, the U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that a BMI over 25 is considered overweight, which is a risk factor for diabetes.Men who fall into this category should be screened for diabetes starting at age 35 (the USNLM urges Asian American men to be screened if their BMI exceeds 23). OTHER LITTLE SHIPS
In Mark 4:36 it says “they took Him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.” To use a play on words it follows we need a RelationSHIP with Jesus = without that you won’t be in Heaven. Salvation isn’t in a church, religion, Mary or anyone else, only in HIM. Are you in this ship? Another is SonSHIP = you must be born again to be a Son of God. Yet there is another little ship called FellowSHIP = you can have the best of that in a Bible Believing Church. Don’t forsake the assembling together. Then there’s CitizenSHIP = The Saved of mankind has this in Heaven. Jesus is King there. Don’t forget StewardSHIP = He owns our time, talent, and treasure. Don’t miss the SHIP!

ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat
The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY
Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.
BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE
Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.

HOLIDAY BAKING POINTERS
Pans should be on the center rack of the oven. If the oven isn’t wide enough to put multiple pans side by side, place them on different racks and slightly offset them to enable air circulation.
Use parchment paper. This unsung hero of baking can keep cookies from spreading out on baking sheets, prevent cakes from sticking to pans and may even help batter and dough bake evenly.
Cool cakes upside down on a cooling rack. This will help flatten out the tops, which makes it easier to stack and level cakes for layered cakes.

fir trees are typically uniformly pyramid-shaped trees that have strong branches that turn slightly upward. These trees have good needle retention and a dark, blue-green hue. Many people feel these trees have a pleasant scent. Because they are such a quintessential Christmas tree, Fraser fir, as well as their close cousin, Balsam fir, tend to be more expensive than others.
