TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR
Learn about ECKANKAR at www.eckankar.org
Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.
W ITH HELP FROM CHILE, BLUEBERRIES STAY FRESH ALL W INTER They’re delicious, nutritious and versatile. They’re naturally fatfree, high in vitamin C and a rich source of antioxidants. Americans love them in c ereals, salads, sauces and as toppings and by the handful, but w hen w inter comes around, many people assume fresh blueberry season is over. Not so fast. W hen the snow flies in M inneapolis, things are just heating up in places like Chile. Thanks to a robust South American fruit industry, fresh blueberries now maintain their favored position in North American produce aisles, culinary creations, and home kitchens all year long. The popularity of blueberries has soared in recent years, driven by their impressive nutritional resume. One half-c up of blueberries c ontains just 42 c alories and helps meet the recommended 5 to 9 servings a day of c olorful fruits and vegetables. The “ Little Blue Dynamos” pac k in fiber, potassium, Vitamin C and more cancer-fighting antioxidants than either w ine or green tea. Recent studies also show that fresh blueberries can help keep skin looking younger; help prevent dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease; and serve as a natural anti-inflammatory. Helping the cause significantly is that most people consider fresh blueberries a treat, including children w ho remain blissfully unaw are of the health benefits. Fresh blueberries are easily enjoyed as a grab-and-go snack, but there are other sw eet and savory w ays to beat the w inter blues w ith this superfood.

GIFTING IDEAS FOR BUDGET-CONSCIOUS FAMILIES Embrace a “Secret Santa” exchange. Large families can save money by engaging in a Secret Santa exchange. Rather than asking each member of the family to buy gifts for one another, a Secret Santa exchange asks each participant to pick a name out of a hat and then only buy gifts for that person. This is a great way to save both money and time, and it saves participants from the potential hassle of returning gifts after the season.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 23, 1620, one week after the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth harbor in present-day Massachusetts, construction of the first permanent European settlement in New England begins. The term “Pilgrim” was derived from a manuscript in which Gov. Bradford spoke of the “saints” who traveled to the New World as “pilgrimes.”

SHOPPING LOCALLY
It Matt ers
I
t matters where you shop. Where you spend your hard earned money. Your local merchant is working just as hard to earn your money. And when you choose to not support your local merchant and shop outside your community or county, you’ve robbed yourself of the benefits of your money staying where you live. THINK LOCAL, especially at this gifting time of year. Make it a Merry Christmas for all of us because, ‘it matters!’
The feel-good factor Doing for others certainly has an impact on the person on the receiving end, but also benefits the do-gooders. A November 2020 survey by Union Bank found that 72 percent of Americans said supporting small businesses was more important than getting the best deals. That may be due to the feeling of helping out a fellow neighbor.
Create job opportunities Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, along with their employees. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. That’s also true in Canada, where 68.8 percent of the total labor force works for a small business. A person may never know when he or she - or a relative - will need a job. Keeping small businesses viable provides a strong job market for locals.
Keep more money in the community The Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. Spend the same $100 at a national retailer and only $14 stays.
Enjoy a more local flavor National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization, but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small businesses may also be more inclined to work with local vendors and start-ups than national companies that have global supply chains.

I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. ~Charles Dickens GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

ALL HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Holiday Decorations Thank You! Thank You! Thank you! to all of you who go to a lot of time, trouble and expense to decorate your properties with lights, figures, and even music. It is such a joy to drive around looking at all the cheery displays. It really helps put one in the holiday spirit! Main Street Wreaths The Town of York hangs wreaths along Main Street every year and they’re so simple and beautiful. It really adds to the joy of the season for all that live here. This year they are all white lights and it makes it even more special. Thank you to those who provide these special wreaths for the season!
Avon Library Raffle Recipient I was delighted to receive a call from the Avon Library, during the Avon Holiday Spectacular, and learn I was the recipient of the Afghan raffle. The Heirloom Afghan is a treasure. I admire the talent of Dorthey Dunderdale, who crocheted and cross- stitched 35 of the squares, and the equally amazing work of the master needle workers of Avon's Sit N Knit group. Gail Settle, Eloise Puls, Kathy Barsz, Carol Cattone, Colleen Fressie, Mary Lathron, Grace Frenzel, Cathy Hancher, Pamela Bickford, and Linda Conrad are true assets to our community. Their hard work created an incredible masterpiece and I am grateful to them and the Avon Library to be able to enjoy and share in this community project.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2023
‘Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse The stockings were hung by the chimney with care In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there The children were nestled all snug in their beds While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads And mamma in her ’kerchief and I in my cap Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter Away to the window I flew like a flash Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below When, what to my wondering eyes should appear But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer With a little old driver, so lively and quick I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick More rapid than eagles his coursers they came And he whistled and shouted and called them by name "Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky So up to the house-top the coursers they flew With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof As I drew in my head and was turning around Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack His eyes—how they twinkled! His dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk And laying his finger aside of his nose And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle And away they all flew like the down of a thistle But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight “Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night!”
T
According to Poet.org, this poem “offered a different take on Acco Ac co Santa Claus, a figure who was, until that time, traditionally depicted as a thinner, less jolly, horse-riding disciplinarian, a combination of mythologies about the British Father Christmas, the Dutch Sinterklaas, and the fourth-century bishop Saint Nicholas of Myra.” The new version showed Santa as a cheerful, chubby icon now “everpresent in holiday cards, movies, television shows, and malls everywhere.” Much less known is Moore’s “Old Santeclaus” poem.
his poem is in the public domain. According to Parade Magazine’s Jessica Sager and Poet.org, this quintessential poem, originally titled “A Visit” or “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” was first published anonymously on Dec. 23, 1823, in a Troy, NY newspaper called The Sentinel. Sager says Moore allegedly wanted to keep his authorship secret “because he was a professor and the piece wasn’t considered a scholarly work.” In 1837, Moore accepted credit and explained that he based his vision of Santa Claus on the historic St. Nicholas as well as a Dutch handyman near his home. Legend has it that this handyman drove the sleigh that took Moore home. Sager says, “Moore is largely credited with creating the modern-day image of Santa Claus as well as the domesticity associated with being home for the holidays, especially on Christmas Eve.”

Patient With PBC Needs Calcium Supplements Amid Normal Levels
99
$
--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 60-year-old female who was
diagnosed with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in 2020. At the time, I had a bone density scan that showed osteopenia of the left femoral neck with a T-score of -1.3. My 10-year risk of any fracture was 6.9%, while my risk for hip fractures was 0.5 %. My hepatologist wants me to take a calcium supplement, even though my calcium level has always been normal. I have always been overweight and led a very sedentary way of life. I had vitamin D tests done yearly, but the deficiency was, negligently, never addressed by my doctors. So my first question is, do I really need to take this supplement? I am concerned that too much calcium may do more harm than good, and my osteopenia may not have been caused by my PBC. The other question is, would taking vitamin K2 along with vitamin D and calcium help absorb vitamin D better so that it would not accumulate in my kidneys and damage them in the process? -- R.Z. ANSWER: PBC is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the bile ducts. Without treatment, it can cause loss of the bile ducts, eventually leading to cirrhosis and liver failure. Since ursodeoxycholic acid has been available, fortunately the majority of people with this condition have a normal life expectancy. Few develop cirrhosis. A lesser-known complication of PBC is osteopenia and osteoporosis. There are several theories as to why this occurs, including decreased growth factors and toxicity to bone-producing cells. Low vitamin D and, possibly, vitamin K2 may play a role as well. It’s important for all people with osteopenia or osteoporosis to have adequate calcium in their diets. Calcium blood tests are not a reliable indicator of calcium stores in the body, since inadequate calcium intake will cause the body to take calcium out of the bones so that the blood levels remain normal. You can be severely deficient in calcium and dangerously osteoporotic with normal calcium blood levels. Ensuring adequate dietary calcium then becomes of the utmost importance. If you aren’t getting 1,000-1,200 mg of calcium in your diet, then changing your diet to add more or taking a supplement is recommended. Kidney stones are a complication of calcium supplementation, and there is controversy surrounding whether the calcification of blood vessels is more likely in people who take calcium supplements. For these reasons, dietary calcium is preferred, if possible. Many people with osteoporosis need supplemental vitamin D to keep their blood levels in the recommended range, which is 30-48 ng/mL (75-120 nmol/L) for a person with PBC and osteopenia, in my opinion. Although studies in Japan have shown benefit when using vitamin K2 supplementation in people with osteoporosis, I don’t generally recommend it, based on multiple other studies that failed to produce a benefit. However, for bone disease associated with PBC in particular, K2 is reasonable for those who wish to try it. Vitamin K2 works through its mineralization effect on the bone itself. By carefully monitoring vitamin D blood levels, you can avoid the unusual complication of vitamin D excess. Finally, becoming less sedentary will help, even if it’s walking an extra 10-20 minutes a day.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NERVE INJURIES What are the symptoms of peripheral nerve injuries? Autonomic nerves: Excessive sweating, changes in blood pressure, an inability to tolerate heat, and gastrointestinal issues are potential indicators of autonomic nerve injuries.

Here’s a Tip * It might be hard to get or stay motivated for exercise once we’ve dipped into shortened days and lower temperatures. Exercise is so important to your health, so get it any way you can. Did you know that a half-hour snowball fight can burn 100 calories? Get out there and enjoy the winter weather! -- JoAnn * If you frequently face snow in your area, invest in a pair of running shoes that are designed for trail running. They have deeper cleats for better traction. Some are even waterproof. This will encourage you to run when it’s been snowing! * “To help your sneakers dry faster, remove the laces and sock liner and hang separately. Stuff them with newspaper to draw out moisture. Hang them to dry on a sturdy hook or line, but not too close to a heater, as it’s possible to break down the support materials that way.” -- E.D. in Minnesota (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale. Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot. Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person. Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
No Peace on Earth fo for or ats Visiting Dogs and Ca Cats
Chibi is a 2 year old medium hair cat and she loves spending Christmas under the tree.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My aunt and uncle insist on bringing their toy poodle, Frank, to the family gathering at my house this Christmas. The trouble is that my cat, Maximilian, cannot stand any dog. Especially Frank. Last year, Maxi chased Frank all around the house and scratched his snout pretty badly. I know they’re going to bring Frank again, because they bring him everywhere. I don’t want to tell them not to come. How can I have peace in the house this holiday? -Shane in Hyde Park, New York DEAR SHANE: I’m already envisioning your aunt and uncle as the sort who let their poodle run rampant throughout the house, clambering on laps and begging for bits of food under the table, right? And they want everyone to think of Frank as a charming little guy. Maxi’s aggression toward Frank isn’t surprising. Cats are territorial, and most instinctively don’t like dogs. Some barely tolerate other cats. Frank’s presence is very stressful for Maxi, and one visit a year will not help the two become more socialized. Since Frank is coming to the party no matter what, you need to concentrate on reducing Maxi’s stress and plan for ways to keep him comfortable and away from the poodle. Designate a room in your house as Maxi’s refuge on the day of the family gathering. Place his bedding, toys, food and water in it and keep him there during the event.
THE HISTORY OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, also created the first strand of electric lights that would be used in holiday decorating. By 1880, Edison had standard incandescent light bulbs well sorted out and desired a way to better advertise his invention, so he decided to make the most of the holiday season and put his light bulbs on display. According to a 2003 article in American Heritage magazine titled “The Wizard of Your Christmas Tree,” Edison strung incandescent bulbs all around the compound of his Menlo Park, NJ, laboratory. Edison constructed an eight-mile underground wiring system in order to power this grand light display. Because the laboratory was situated along the railroad that passed between Manhattan and Philadelphia, thousands of people were able to see the display. The concept of electric holiday lights took a bit of time to catch on. Edison’s friend and associate Edward Johnson was tasked with stringing together colored lights in 1882 and placing them on an evergreen tree. Johnson hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs. In 1895, President Grover Cleveland requested the White House family Christmas tree be illuminated by multi-colored electric light bulbs. In 1903, when General Electric began to offer pre-assembled kits of holiday lights, stringed lights were reserved for the wealthy and electrically savvy. For example, in 1903 a single string of electric lights cost $12, or around $300 today. It would take several more years before holiday lights became a national tradition. On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the country’s celebration of Christmas by lighting the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse located south of the White House with 3,000 electric lights. Today, illuminated strands of lights have become a large part of holiday celebrations and have even been adopted for use during various year-round events. Such lights can be a beautiful and festive addition to many celebrations. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
