TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Questions About COPD --DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with COPD a year and a half ago and have several questions. I seem to be unable to get answers from my pulmonary doctor, as he is always busy and doesn’t have a lot of time to spend with me. How fast does COPD progress? I’m 78 years old, in reasonably good health and exercise regularly. I have chronic bronchitis with a slight amount of emphysema. I had been coughing a little during the day, had mucus in the morning and coughed at night for two to three hours after bedtime -to the extent of having to use a rescue inhaler to settle down and get back to sleep. After he put me on Trelegy, all of those symptoms disappeared, and I feel perfectly normal except for shortness of breath. My other question is what is the life expectancy of a person diagnosed with COPD? I’ve read about answers to this all over the map, from two or three years after diagnosis to 15 or more years. I would presume that it depends on other factors such as physical condition, exercise, weight, etc. But I would like some kind of guideline for someone in my condition. -- T.J. ANSWER: There are two major types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: chronic bronchitis, where the primary problem is productive cough; and emphysema, which is destruction of the small airways. Shortness of breath is a common feature of all types of COPD. The most prevalent cause is smoking. I can’t answer your questions on rate of progression and overall prognosis without much more information, but it is certainly a good sign that many of your symptoms are well-controlled on treatment. The single biggest factor in rate of progression of COPD is whether you are a smoker, but not being able to exercise, being male and being very underweight are additional risk factors for faster progression. Lung function falls inexorably over time. In people who have no lung disease, the normal decline with aging is never enough to cause symptoms during normal activity. In someone with COPD, the decline over months to years can cause symptoms to occur first with exercise, and then when at rest. Once people have severe symptoms at rest, the prognosis becomes quite poor. No medication can reverse lung damage. Inhaled steroids reduce inflammation and can slow progression somewhat. Inhaled bronchodilators open airways and make breathing easier. Inhaled anticholinergics reduce secretions. Your medication, Trelegy, contains all of these medicines, and is appropriate for people with severe COPD or those who do not have good symptom control with a less intensive regimen. An online calculator for prognosis can be found at https:// bit.ly/2N1UEoy. It can be used if you know how far you can walk in six minutes and the results of your breathing test (specifically, the FEV1%). ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Tigers, jaguars and leopards love the smell of Calvin Klein’s “Obsession For Men”! Photographers who used the fragrance to lure the big cats to their cameras in the wild said the cats “would start drooling, their eyes would half-close, almost like they were going into a trance.” * Halloween is more Irish than St. Patrick’s Day. * Ever wonder how the dice game Yahtzee got its curious moniker? A wealthy Canadian couple invented the game as a way of entertaining friends on board their yacht. After it proved a hit, the couple consulted a toy maker who loved it, bought the rights, and changed the original name from the generic “Yacht game” to “Yahtzee.” * Barbie has been outfitted by over 70 well-known designers, including Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 6, 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a 9-inch aluminum pyramid atop a tower of white marble, completing the construction of a monument to the city’s namesake and the nation’s first president, George Washington. * On Dec. 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, bringing an end to the prohibition of alcohol. Prohibition did little more than slow the flow of booze, and bootleggers like Al Capone had built criminal empires out of illegal distribution. * On Dec. 3, 1979, the last AMC Pacer rolls off the assembly line at the American Motors Corporation factory in Kenosha, Wisconsin. A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire. ~Hugh Macmillan

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Between 1970 and 1973, four Israeli fighter pilots held as POWs in an Egyptian prison passed their time by translating J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” from English into Hebrew. The book was sent to them by their family members via the Red Cross. The pilots’ version was published commercially in 1977 and is still considered by many to be one of the best Hebrew translations available.

Fairport-Perinton Dollars for Scholars Renames Annual Award to Honor Long-Serving Volunteer,
Donna Yawman
BY KATHY LARMANN
O
n November 17, 2020, the Fairport-Perinton Dollars for Scholars Chapter paid tribute to one of its most dedicated and longest-serving members, the late Donna Yawman. Each year the DFS board of directors presents the Dollars for Scholars Honor Award to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the program. This year the Chapter paid special tribute to one of their own by presenting the award to Donna Yawman posthumously and renaming it the Donna Yawman Honor Award. Donna joined the DFS board in 1994 and immediately began to redefine the Scholarship Selection process. Just two years later she was elected Chapter president. During her presidency, the first Phone-a-thon was created to reach out to the Fairport Donna lived a community for the funding of college scholarships for area life rooted in seniors. After her tenure, she family values. focused on the Scholarship Committee, serving as chair and co-chair from the late 1990’s until her passing in June 2019. Under her watch, the number of Fairport students who received financial “recognition” for their academic and personal achievements grew from six $1,000 DFS Chapter scholarship recipients in 1990 to 72 award winners totaling $63,180. Donna served on the Fairport-Perinton Dollars for Scholars board for 25 years. She lived a life rooted in family values, giving back to the community, creating opportunities for young people, and working toward a higher quality of life in Fairport. She was genuinely loved, admired, and respected by all those who knew her.

Here’s what’s happening at your local library… Just after the death of the flowers, And before they are buried in snow, There comes a festival season, When nature is all aglow— Aglow with a mystical spendour That rivals the brightness of spring, Aglow with a beauty more tender Than aught which fair summer could bring.... ~Emeline B. I step outside and the chilly air tightens the skin on my bare arms. Summer has ended all too quickly, and some of the leaves on the trees have already started to burn with the colors of fall. Fall colors.... so bright and intense and beautiful. It’s like nature is trying to fill you up with color, to saturate you so you can stockpile it before winter turns everything muted and dreary.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Great Gift Idea - Chocolate-Dipped Pretzels These pretzels are super easy to whip up to give as a gift. Dip them a day ahead, and pack them in a box lined with waxed tissue paper. Don't forget to remind your friends that pretzels are best eaten within a week -- if they're even around that long! 8 ounces milk chocolate, broken into pieces 27 (8-inch long) pretzel rods Flaked coconut and/or green, red and white sprinkles (for topping) 1. Place chocolate in microwave-safe measuring cup or mug. Heat, covered with waxed paper, in microwave on High 1 to 2 minutes or until chocolate is almost melted, stirring occasionally until smooth. 2. Meanwhile, place each topping choice on separate sheet of waxed paper or on individual plates. 3. Holding 1 pretzel rod at a time, dip in melted chocolate, tipping cup to cover about half of rod with chocolate. Allow excess chocolate to drip off pretzel back into cup. Immediately sprinkle coated pretzel with choice of topping. Carefully place coated pretzel rod in pie plate or shallow bowl, leaning uncoated portion on edge. 4. Repeat with remaining pretzels (try to keep pretzels from touching one another in pie plate) and refrigerate about 20 minutes to set coating. Store pretzels in tightly sealed container, with waxed paper between layers, at room temperature up to 1 week. Makes 27 pretzels. * Each serving: About 135 calories, 6g total fat (3g saturated), 3mg cholesterol, 165mg sodium, 18g total carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 3g protein.

Small business furniture retailer expands in a big way Rochester, NY-- Sequels Home Furnishings, a family-owned small business, is opening a 15,000 sq. ft. showroom at a time many brick-and-mortar retailers are contracting.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Q: DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My new cat, “Corky,” is absolutely shredding the fabric legs of my sofa! I buy plenty of toys for him, so why is he so attracted to my expensive furniture? -- Leo in Little Rock, Arkansas DEAR LEO: Welcome to cat ownership! Shredded furniture frequently comes with the territory. But please don’t think I’m telling you to get used to it. This is a common problem. You will find plenty of advice online on ways to stop your cat from scratching up all of the vertical surfaces in your house. Cats adore fabric sofas; they are ideal because the wood underneath sharpens their claws while the fabric provides just the right amount of resistance. You’ll need to attack this problem from a few angles. First, by teaching Corky not to scratch furniture. Put a scratching post next to the sofa. When he reaches up to the sofa leg, gently reach under his paws and lift them up and away. Then, place Corky in front of the scratching post and pet him. Repeat this every time. A faster way to stop the problem is to shake a can of coins or hiss loudly, but this is negative reinforcement that provides no alternative for his scratching. And cats need to scratch! Once Corky starts going to the scratching post first, gradually move the post away from the sofa. To save your sofa fabric during this time, cover it with a thick layer (or multiple layers) of plastic sheeting either stapled or duct taped into place. The added benefit is that plastic is not a pleasurable scratching material, so Corky will eventually start ignoring it. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The human body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring a gallon of water to a boil.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Looking for a great cause for gifting this year? Go to www. charitynavigator.org to find out more about how your prospective charities rank in areas like CEO pay, money spent on fundraising, etc. * Need a quick batch of cookies? Keep a box of cake mix on hand. Instead of the listed ingredients, add two eggs and a half-cup of oil to the mix. Mix and shape, then bake at 350 F for 10 minutes. They are really good, and you can get pretty creative.
On December 5th, the upscale furniture consignment shop, will add a new location at Winton Place in Brighton. Owners, Stephanie and Don Mogavero, have operated a furniture consignment business in Victor for six years with two separate locations. When their lease ended on an historic railroad depot in Victor, the couple decided to find a location nearer to Rochester. “We already had an 8000 sq. ft. warehouse showroom on Rawson Road in Victor, but were still bursting at the seams,” said Stephanie Mogavero. About to sign a lease at Winton Place when the pandemic struck, the couple had second thoughts about their expansion plans. At the onset of COVID restrictions, they added online purchasing to their website instead. According to Stephanie Mogavero, the lockdown months included daily discussions about whether or not to commit to a long-term lease. The couple decided to move ahead and credits their loyal customer support and a loan from the Small Business Association (SBA) for helping make the expansion decision. The new showroom reflects Sequels’ mission: to “refresh, re-use, re-purpose.” Taking on the challenge of reviving a commercial space that had been abandoned for 11 years, the couple created an upscale showroom to showcase a carefully-selected and unusual collection of home décor and gifts. The added square footage at Winton Place makes Sequels the largest furniture consignment shop in New York State. Carrying recognized brands like Stickley, Ethan Allen, Arhaus, Henredon, MacKenzie-Childs, Waterford and more, the consignment shop has developed a loyal following. “It took longer than expected to renovate and stock our new showroom, but we’re excited to show people how buying excellent quality, gently-used furnishings and accessories has great value,” said Don Mogavero. “People know the value of buying pre-owned, luxury cars. The same amazing value is possible with refreshed, brand-name furnishings,” Mogavero said. The new showroom at 3450 Winton Place opens December 5th at 10 am. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 11 am to 5 pm, Thursday, 11 am to 7 pm and Saturday 10 am to 5 pm. Contact Sequels at www.SequelsHomeFurnishings.com or call (585) 935-7297 for details.
* Inexpensive gift idea: A cute holiday coffee mug with a bar of chocolate, a packet of hot cocoa or instant coffee, a peppermint stick and a decorative holiday craft pick. Place inside a gallon-size zippertop bag, tie with a ribbon, then trim off the zipper-top, leaving just the plastic. Looks nice.

* When holiday cookie time comes, I keep a plastic pitcher of hot water in the sink. I toss cookie cutters into it when I’m finished with them, so the corners are soaking. They really seem to only need a rinse and a quick brush-off afterward. Mine don’t get caked up with dough. -– JoAnn * Dogs and chocolate just don’t mix, so keep those holiday plates full of delicious chocolate morsels up and out of the reach of pets. * Use last year’s Christmas cards as gift tags on this year’s gifts: Just cut out great-looking images and write your own to and from on the back.

During this season of giving and fellowship Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace would like to thank all who promote peace through dialogue, kindness, tolerance and justice. Might does not make right no matter who uses it. May we all renounce violence as something that causes more problems than it solves. This is as important as ever in this transitional time for the country we all care about.

Thank you & Best Wishes! Thank you with all my heart to Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County. Thanks to them with the support of many volunteers and my family, my children and I are safely and happily moved into our new home. A special thanks and extra well wishes to John Marks, Butch Erbe and Ron Walker as they “retire” from Habitat. I am so thankful for all you have done and for the chance to get to know you all! God bless you richly. Amanda D. & Sons
Thanksgiving I just finished reading Amanda Dudek’s Hometown Story about Thanksgiving from November 20th and want to thank her and GVPS for sharing such an uplifting and positive message with your readers.
For the birds To those maintenance people in parking lots that chase people down who feed the starving seagulls: Seagulls are scavengers – they actually clean up garbage from parking lots and the environment. I always pick a remote corner to feed them. After they eat bread, Tostitos, and popcorn, there is nothing left to clean up. Man has burned their
trees, and polluted their drinking water with climate change, paved their space and run over them with traffic, and stolen their habitat with commercial development. Half of all-American birds are gone. Yet you threatened to kick me off the property if I fed them. Another man told me it was illegal to feed them. Where is your heart and sense of justice for birds and animals?

Lowe’s In Brockport Rocks! On Black Friday, we spoke to Derik, the store manager, over the phone concerning a price drop in something that we had just purchased. He said we were within the 30-day price match

and gave us the credit for the difference in the price we had paid. He was nice enough to do it over the phone, (we had our receipt with all the needed information), so that we would not have to go to the store. He was kind, quick, and efficient. No hassles! Thank you so much for painlessly handling the matter. We appreciated it.
