HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS Be especially careful with power tools. Power tools can do a lot and they’re fun to use. But it’s important that DIYers do not let fun distract them from safety. The Power Tool Institute urges power tool users to wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. The PTI also advises users to make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and to inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. Much like it’s unsafe to overreach on a ladder, overreaching when using power tools increase the risk for mistakes, accidents and injuries.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES When working with chemicals and other products that have strong odors and/or emit particulates into the air, make sure you do so in well-ventilated areas. This will help dissipate the smell and prevent inhalation of concentrated chemical substances. Masks guard against dust, pollen and some other microscopic particles and may not provide enough protection, depending on the job. The Home Depot suggests using particulate or filtration respirators when performing tasks, such as sanding, where you might be exposed to particles. Gas and vapor respirators offer protection against additional substances. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS Volunteering: Local environmental groups often sponsor cleanups at parks and waterfront attractions like beaches and lakes. Volunteering with such organizations is a great way to get outside and give back, and working with like-minded individuals can be a great way for seniors to meet new people. In addition, a national study sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2019 found that 88 percent of Senior Corps volunteers who initially reported a lack of companionship reported a decrease in feelings of isolation after volunteering.

Known as Washington’s Birthday, which is still the legal name of the holiday, this day was meant to celebrate the first President of the United States, George Washington, whose birthday was February 22. Congress declared that day a federal holiday more than 200 years ago, and eventually the holiday grew to become a celebration of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12, as well. The holiday is now a celebration of the lives and accomplishments of every U.S. president. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Elevator etiquette Please, when using an elevator, don’t stand directly right in front of the door and then try to rush in; there are people inside who need to get out first. This happens so much. I always stand to the side and then look in to see if anyone’s in there and when it’s clear, I get in. It’s not a pretty sight when you’ve got people trying to get in as people are trying to get out. Please use common sense.

Thank you I was in the Wegmans parking lot on Feb 2nd and this gentleman informed me that I had a flat tire. While I was sitting there trying to figure out what I was going to do, he came back with a machine to blow up my tire right there. I’m 88 years old, so this was a blessing from God. Thank you! Winter is so beautiful Winter is so beautiful around here. I’m so glad to see so many people using the Erie Canal towpath and the county park trails in all seasons (we’re from upstate NY after all; if we shelter inside whenever it’s under 40º, we’d miss so much of winter).

Use your phone To the people who complained about a restaurant being closed despite checking their website for the hours of operation, do not blame the restaurant. I’m sure the restaurant had a phone number. Did you think to call the restaurant? Folks, have you noticed people developing a communication phobia to the point of paralysis? With all the technology today there is less communication going on than there was 100 years ago. This couple probably pays over $100 a month to have their cellphone, yet they don’t use it for what it was originally designed to do.

Karen Reichert: Dedicated Steward of Scandinavian Tradition in Rochester B Y J O D Y LY N N G R E E R

Karen (in red) with President Arnie Larsen, Zone 4 Director Kaare Hansen, Vice President Bill Gibbs, and Secretary Joan Callahan

T

he Rochester chapter of the Scandinavian Heritage Society (Sons of Norway), Lodge 3-433, holds a rich history within the United States and Canada. Embracing individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and origins, the society proudly represents every Scandinavian country. Welcoming those who share a deep appreciation for Scandinavian traditions, food, and culture, the society fosters a sense of unity among its diverse members. Among the passionate individuals contributing to the society is Karen Reichert, whose connection to Scandinavian heritage runs deep. Born to a Swedish mother and Norwegian father, Reichert has been actively involved with the Sons of Norway since 2004, though her early exposure dates back to 1949 when she came to the States as an infant with her parents and then-ten-year-old brother, John (Landro). The family met some Norwegians and started going to the group in 1950, she says. Since then, The Reichert family’s involvement in the Sons of Norway spans generations, with each member leaving a lasting impact on the organization. Despite growing up in American culture, Reichert ensured her children and grandchildren remained connected to their Nordic ancestry. Reichert’s children, Emma Pasterick of NJ, Brian Reichert of Dansville, NY and Amanda Hook of Georgia participated in Sankta Lucia events in their youth. Additionally, Amanda contributes routinely to Trollnytt. The Reichert grandchildren have all participated in annual Sankta Lucia events and are interested in learning to speak Norwegian. Reichert emphasizes the enduring presence of Scandinavian culture in her family’s homes, stating, “It’s in their DNA. They love their culture,” highlighting the legacy that was not left behind when the family migrated to America. For those not familiar with the Christian Sankta (Saint in Swedish) Lucia holiday tradition, Reichert explains, “When it first started, there was a famine in Sweden and [St Lucia] came as a vision over a frozen lake with a tray of buns and coffee with a crown of light.” While Sankta Lucia is traditionally celebrated as a Swedish tradition, its origins can be traced back to Italy before that. Reichert explains, “[Lucia] was a saint in Italy, then she was martyred, and she would bring hope to the people of Italy; for some reason her soul and her spirit came to Sweden.” Every year, the Scandinavian Heritage Society offers their take on the classic holiday tradition with their famous Lutefisk dinner. Lutefisk is a dried cod or whitefish beloved by many Scandinavians. 26 years ago, the Sons of Norway conceptualized the annual Lutefisk dinner featuring the beloved fish, Swedish meatballs, and delectable desserts.

At this year’s Lutefisk dinner in Rochester, Reichert was honored for her selfless dedication to the society. Volunteers like Reichert, who generously contribute their time and energy, play a crucial role in preserving cultural traditions for future generations. As treasurer, newsletter editor, and event organizer, Reichert plays a key role with Lodge 3-433. She manages the monthly Trollnytt newsletter that keeps members informed on upcoming events, historical facts, and trivia. In addition, nearly every member of Karen’s family has participated with the Sons of Norway, from previous St. Lucia and Lutefisk dinner events to the present day Trolnytt newsletter. Reichert acknowledges the improved status of Scandinavian countries globally and advocates for extending support beyond their borders. The Sons of Norway’s original concept, aiding new immigrants from Norway, has evolved to support other cultures. In 2022, for example, the society raised $1,200 at the Lutefisk dinner for Ukraine efforts. Helping those in need and specifically immigrants and refugees is a shared message amongst both Norse and American cultures, Reichert explains. Her own parents sought better opportunities and a fresh start in the United States, leaving behind memories of WWII Nazi occupation. Reichert embodies the goals Scandinavian Heritage Society and the shared American dream of many immigrants who want to escape wartorn countries, violent conflict, pursue educational opportunities, or simply follow the possibility of a better life. The Sons of Norway promotes philanthropy and support for global causes in addition to promotion of Scandinavian interests. For more information on the Rochester chapter of the Scandinavian Heritage Society (Sons of Norway), find them on Facebook for meeting and event details.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Is Pet Sitting A ProfitableCareer? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m a high school student and I’m thinking about what kind of career I’d like to have after I graduate three years from now. I’m not sure college is for me, and I like being around pets -- my family has two dogs and a cat, and I have a flop-eared rabbit. I’ve heard that pet sitting is a good business to be in. Is this true? Can I do that instead of college? -- Caryn H., Fort Walton Beach, Florida

Penny Saver

DEAR CARYN: Pet sitting is a huge and growing market, because almost every owner is going to need someone to watch their pet at some point. So, it’s certainly worth considering as a career. You can start your own pet-sitting business or go to work for someone else.

Ruthy, a four-month-old Persian kitten, is a delightful companion with many playful ways.

This is a job that requires responsibility and self-discipline, because people are entrusting you with their pets. You have to show up at the agreed-upon time, follow the owners’ instructions to the letter, and make sure their pets remain happy and healthy. If dog-walking is part of the job, you’ve got to keep them under control and away from conflicts with other dogs. You’ve got to stay healthy, because a sick day is not an option unless you have someone to cover for you. Start by visiting the websites of two major pet-sitting organizations: Pet Sitters International (petsit.com) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). They offer resources, certifications and more. Talk to your parents and your school guidance counselor about your interest. They’ll support you and help you explore this career option. MAKE CUT FLOWERS LAST LONGER Treat the water To preserve flowers, do your best to reduce bacteria, provide a food source for the flowers and manage the pH so that the uptake of water will continue to be strong. Sugar can be an adequate food source. Gardenista, a floral arrangement and gardening resource, tested a variety of methods for preserving flowers and found much of the same results across the board. These included vinegar and sugar, conventional flower food, bleach, aspirin, and a penny. The bleach, aspirin, copper penny, and vinegar work as antibacterial agents. The sugar and the plant food help nourish the blooms. In the trials, most of the blooms remained strong for three to four days.

Experiencing Hearing Loss?

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Sudden Foot Pain After a Concert Becomes Debilitating

Get Your Hearing Checked. Hearing test and consultation. New Insurance? Learn more without obligation. Call today for details and your appointment.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter and her friend went to a concert and had to climb stairs. They ended up walking about 2.5 miles in total. After returning home, my daughter had severe pain in both of her feet and was unable to stand or walk on them. She said it felt like someone was crushing them. The pain did not get better, so she went to the emergency room a few days later. A doctor there performed an X-ray and said that the pain was due to bunions, although they did not even look at her feet. She also saw a foot specialist who told her that the diagnosis was neuropathy of the feet and recommended Neurontin for pain. He asked her if she has diabetes, but she does not. They told my daughter that she will have to live in pain for the rest of her life. The doctor recommended getting some tests done on her nerves at the hospital, but she doesn’t have money to pay for these tests. What can be done to help her? How is it possible that the pain started so suddenly? She is in constant pain and is unable to walk. -- K.B. ANSWER: “Neuropathy” is not a diagnosis; it’s a name for a diverse group of diseases that cause damage to the nerves, specifically signifying the nerves in the brain and spinal cord or those outside of them. The recommendation of getting nerve testing done is correct. This does sound like neuropathy from the little bit of information I have, although neuropathies do not typically begin with exercise the way you described. I have seen several cases where muscles have become terribly inflamed and even break down after a period of unusually strenuous exertion (this usually gets better with time), but I would have expected the doctors to make that diagnosis. There is a compressive neuropathy in the foot (tarsal tunnel syndrome) where the nerve is damaged by pressure from muscles, bones and connective tissue, but this happening to both feet at the same time would be surprising. Metabolic neuropathies, like B12 deficiency, cause symptoms on both sides but do not begin suddenly. I’d be worried about her lower spine. I don’t know what your daughter’s financial situation is, whether she might be eligible for Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act, or whether there is a free medical clinic near you. I have had many patients make just enough money that they don’t qualify for Medicaid, but are unable to afford commercial insurance and don’t get it through work *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. The Gospel Corner In the Book of Beginnings it says “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt Surely Die” Genesis 2:17. “A Word to the wise” has been used by many good parents. Do what you’re told to do and all will be fine. Rebel and you will suffer the consequences. Not Wise. “Die” in the context of this first warning, means to be separated from God. In John 3:7 Jesus said “Ye MUST be born again.” Speaking of the Spiritual birth NEEDED to escape the death in Hell forever, and receive the Spiritual Life promised by repenting of your sin and trusting Jesus ONLY for a home in Heaven forever. Eternity is a long time. Our day of death is imminent, make the WISE decision today.
