DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter is a registered nurse, and tells me that when getting blood tests, it is not necessary to fast eight to 12 hours even though my doctor says to do so. Four hours is enough, she claims.

Is this true, or is my daughter trying to be a doctor, if you know what I mean? --- L.C. ANSWER: I probably agree with your daughter the nurse more than I do with your doctor in this case.

Most routine blood testing does not require fasting.

There is controversy about whether cholesterol testing is best done fasting or not: Most recent evidence suggests that fasting is not necessary. However, many physicians still continue to use fasting levels, as that is what they are used to. Nonfasting numbers may reflect the true state of risk to the arteries more so than fasting levels.

A few seldom-ordered tests, such as insulin levels, may need to be drawn precisely a certain period of time after feeding to be able to interpret them. In most cases, your daughter is probably right that prolonged fasting is unnecessary. I still recommend following your doctor’s orders.

Your daughter is providing you with up-to-date medical knowledge. Any nurse or doctor should do the same.

Water flossers are easier to use than traditional floss while wearing braces and they can remove food particles and plaque effectively.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it true that all orange juice is dangerous except organic? I heard on a radio show something about food’s having been contaminated

by Roundup. The man said, “It’s in our orange juice.”

It was said (I think) that only organic was safe. What do you think about this orange juice issue? -- J.J.V.S. ANSWER: I read the report showing that all orange juice brands tested positive for glyphosate, a commonly used herbicide, but one that is never applied to trees, in organic or conventional farming.

The levels in the report, which was not published in a peer-reviewed journal, are extremely low, 3 to 17 parts per billion. The Environmental Protection Agency allowable level in citrus fruit is 500 parts per billion.

The risk from glyphosate in orange juice is negligible.

I don’t recommend large amounts of any type of fruit juice due to sugar content, which is a bigger threat than glyphosate, in my opinion. Stick to a glass a day.

Everyone needs enjoyable activities which offer a deep sense of relaxation to rejuvenate. The only question is where to find them. Look no further than Naples, NY! Go to Water When looking for a destination people are often drawn to localities that offer things to do to relax and things to do for recreation. Naples, NY, is surrounded by a host of activities that satisfy both relaxation and recreation.

Naples is located on the southern end of Canandaigua Lake. The beautiful West River and Naples Creek offer an abundance of water activities for children and adults alike. Kayaking along the West River through three seasons each year is a source of spectacular beauty and can be a lazy float or a very active paddle covering many miles! The river winds along with many small tributaries, home to a delectable display of birds, sounds, flowers, and wildlife. American Bald Eagles, Great Blue Heron, Otter, Turtles, frogs, ducks, and many more may be visible during your travels. Seek the Waterfalls Just south of the West River and the boat launch is an entirely different way to enjoy the water surrounding Naples: waterfalls! Creek walking, waterfall climbing, and picnics Creekside are popular ways to enjoys these natural water favorites. Grimes Glen, a local attraction and tourist hot spot, is home to three waterfalls. Its foot trail continues for about ¬Ω mile, but after that be sure to have your water shoes as you must do a little creek walking to get to the first waterfall. The second waterfall features a nice swimming hole as well as a cave. Leashed dogs are abundant along the trail as are families, teens, and groups of hikers. This is a fairly easy hike, so if you are interested in a more challenging hike and perhaps a waterfall to climb, Clark’s Gully off of Route 245 is the waterfall trail for you! These are just a few of the waterfalls and trails around Naples!

Horses, Hiking & Hi Tor Wildlife Management Naples is also home to many Horse Farms that offer riding lessons, trail and group rides, birthday parties, and more! Horseback riding from novice to experienced abound! Some of the horse farms also offer Birthday parties, group rates, and weekly lessons. Some businesses will even trailer horses to High Tor Wildlife Management Area for a ride through hundreds of acres of absolute beauty. Hi Tor Wildlife Management consists of approximately 6,800 acres. This WMA has numerous ecological habitats, steep hills, gullies, cliffs, and wetlands. It boasts two boat launches, plenty of trails, fishing, hiking, and more. Beware of Ice The local television weather guy made an announcement recently that was, I think, meant to be uplifting. He said, “And winter is now half over!”

Instead, I took it the other way: We still have half of this winter to get through.

My main complaint this year is ... ice. It’s sneaky, it’s everywhere, it’s apparently invisible in the right circumstances, and yes, it’s slick.

There I was, hauling a load of groceries out of the back of the car, having picked them up curbside from the store and arriving home after dark. One of the bags had fallen over and spilled its contents, requiring me to bend over and lean forward at the same time to retrieve the items that had rolled. Unbeknownst to me, my foot was on a piece of ice. I did not fall, but I did twist my leg in a way that legs are not meant to be twisted. Within an hour the pain hit.

By Day 3 I was wondering if I’d broken something. Day 4 was a bit better, and I knew I was on the mend ... if only I could better plan my trips up and out of the recliner to fetch something instead of making multiple trips through the house for Kindle, water bottle, TV remote and more. Worse, I suppose, was that the cat was upset that she wasn’t allowed on my lap during those days. She sat, with a hurt expression, across the room from me for four days.

I think there are multiple lessons to be learned from my brief foray into pain and incapacity, but the most important one is this: Schedule curbside grocery pickup for daylight hours. Don’t arrive home in the dark in the winter if there’s the slightest chance of ice.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME One of the most popular methods of reducing radon concentrations involves a process called active soil depressurization, or ASD. This is a cost-effective and reliable technique to reduce radon that involves capturing the radon from beneath a building before it can enter the dwelling. A venting system draws the radon gas from the soil beneath the foundation and exhausts it outside of the building - far away from windows and other home openings. A continuously operating fan draws and discharges the radon outdoors.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve read that pets can keep seniors healthy, through reducing stress, etc. How does that work? -- Joel P., Fort Myers, Fla. DEAR JOEL: Researchers have found that seniors who own pets have a reduced rate of stress-related ailments, so they’ve theorized that having an animal companion helps seniors feel less alone and somewhat empowered as they care for a cat, dog, fish or other pet. The unconditional love and affection that pets provide can help their owners feel needed and important, and can help to enhance their quality of life.

So, the simple act of caring for a pet can create a longer, happier life for many people.

But there are more benefits to pet ownership. Owners are more likely to interact with other animal lovers. They tend to exercise more than pet-less people -- especially dog owners, who must take their pooches for frequent walks.

Of course, if a senior doesn’t want a dog or cat, the idea shouldn’t be pushed. Owners must be able to care for, walk and feed their pets, and provide training and activities.

Not everyone can meet these requirements. There also are financial considerations, such as regular veterinary care, food and medicine.

An alternative to owning a pet is to visit one (or have one visit) occasionally. There are organizations across the United States that sponsor pet visits for seniors who love animals but cannot care for one full-time. These visits help provide some of the health benefits of pet ownership to those who otherwise would not receive them.

If nothing else, take time out to say hello to the neighbor’s dog, or spend time with relatives and their pets. They’ll love the attention, and you’ll love the stress relief that pets can provide.

When you return, if there is any evidence of melting, you will know you lost power while you were gone. If the bag is one big, flat cube, you lost power long enough to suspect all your refrigerator items of being spoiled. * To temporarily get a winter frost effect on a window, use this fun recipe: Dissolve 4 to 6 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a beer. When the salt is dissolved, dip a clean rag in the mixture and wipe it on your windowpane. As it dries, crystals will form, creating a frost effect. This is a great solution for a window you don’t want to be clear but also don’t want to permanently alter. The effect washes off with soap and water. * “If you get a residue inside your coffee cups when they go through the dishwasher, it might be time to give your machine a once-over.

In the meantime, spray the insides of the coffee cups with a bleachbased cleaner like 409 just before your turn it on. That should help.”

Good People in Genesee County On February 14th in the Batavia Walmart, I was reminded that there are still good people. I was doing a bit of extra shopping. When I got in line to check out, I noticed a young man with only a few items versus my pretty full cart. I stated he could go ahead of me. He replied, "Thank you" and explained he had been working crazy overtime and just wanted to get a few items to surprise his woman. In the meantime, a woman with a little one in tow, got in line behind me with literally three items. I stated for her to go ahead of me as it was going to be a bit for me to unload my cart. As she was placing her three items on the conveyor belt, the young man was finishing his order. As he was leaving, he stated to the cashier "Give that $40.00 I have coming back to that woman right there." That woman was me! I expressed my thanks as I was not expecting that. So, as it says "One good turn deserves another. "It definitely applies here. Blessings are everywhere!

Help During a White Out This is for the kind couple in the red pickup who led me out of a terrible white-out on River Rd. on Feb. 19th. I was in desperate need of help, so I prayed, and God sent you!

You truly represent the goodness in all of us, and I hope the kindness you showed me will come back to you. I will always be grateful that you came along that day.

Choose One! You can’t have it both ways! So you’re saving the environment by not having plastic bags used? Smart choice! Okay instead use paper bags. Wait. You have to cut down trees for paper, but you don’t want that either. So now what?

By the way California doesn’t ban plastic bags! So, now you go to the store in your half plastic car to buy your milk in a plastic jug. Don’t forget the bread in a plastic bag.

Crackers, cereal, cookies are also in what? You guessed it: plastic. People think as long as it’s not in my backyard; I’m saving the world! Reality check: you are the problem.

Uncommon Clarity The persons who posted “Common Concerns” and “We have Control” both made good points. First, we have to stop denying global warming - It’s happening. But its main cause is the planet’s actions (known as “Precession of the Equinoxes”) in which the earth moves from hot to cold and back again every 26,000 years. Has industrialization accelerated the warming? Probably. And there are things we can do, like reducing emissions and conserving energy.

Windmills and solar panels may be unsightly to some, but oil rigs, pipelines, refineries, and power plants are far more unsightly, and add to our pollution. There should not be any plastic in our lakes, oceans, or other water ways. We can stop throwing our garbage onto the roadside. We can use paper wherever possible instead of plastic. These are things over which we have control. None of us is willing to give up electricity, or our cars (especially in a rural area), so we have to work to minimize our energy usage.

Disappointed I am tired of trying to give my money to the local restaurant businesses around me. Every time I call, I’m told they’re out of this or that. I’m fully aware that Covid has affected every aspect of our lives, and the restaurant industry is no exception, but it’s been 2+ years. Adapt, whether it be by paying more for new hires or getting a vendor that will supply your ingredients. I grow weary of these excuses. I don’t want to go to a fast food place.

Also, you’re [foolish] for thinking the environment doesn’t matter. Global warming is not fake news.
