DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in regard to the article on the keyboard-loving cat. My cats often react as if they’re disturbed by many specific sounds: voices from my phone speaker, noise from the radio or iPad, or clicking from typing on the keyboard. My cats are uncomfortable and confused. I believe that the sounds are not pleasant to them. When they paw at the phone screen or at me, I think it’s an attempt to stop, control or try to understand these noises that are bothering them. I’ve found that if I wear earbuds when using my cellphone or iPad, my cats don’t react. I silenced the “clicky” sounds when writing a text message on my phone. When I need to type, I put the cats in another room with a tasty treat to hold them until I’m finished. Our kitties are trying to adjust to our lifestyle, with all the technology we use today, and much of it is antithetical to their way of being! We need to compromise a bit and make adjustments that help them to be more comfortable. Thank you for your informative column each week -- Patricia D.W., via email DEAR PATRICIA: What a great observation! Most of us think that when a cat walks across our keyboard, they are just seeking attention. But it may be something more. With their keen hearing, all that clickety-clacking may be driving them nuts -- and they’re jumping onto the keyboard to put a stop to it. Your solution speaks to the importance of observing our pets and their behavior to learn what is normal for them versus what makes them anxious or annoyed. Observation can give us the answer to many problem behaviors. Send your pet care and training tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

Exercise is a great w ay to maintain a healthy mind and body. M any people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose w eight or build musc le. Too often, how ever, men and w omen get stuck in an exercise rut, follow ing the same exercise routine w eek after w eek. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s nec essary to c hange an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason w hy many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few w eeks. Just w hen you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! W ith repetition, the body adapts and grow s accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose w eight. Changing your w orkout forces your body to w ork harder, producing better results. If you exercise w ith a trainer, discuss w ays to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Inc reased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your w orkouts may do the trick.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save and thoroughly clean foam egg cartons for kids’ paint palettes. The wells keep colors contained, and the flat space on the lid side is great for resting brushes. They are easy to rinse off and just as easy to recycle if you are done with them. * To help insulate your home to prevent heat loss, build up a mound of snow about 3 feet high at the foundation. Snow is a terrific insulator! -- E.S. in Michigan * When topping a pie with meringue, make sure that it touches all the edges of the pie crust. Otherwise it will shrink.

* “You can use a little bit of cooking oil to remove the last bits of sticker adhesive from a glass picture frame. Remove as much of the paper sticker as possible, then dab the spot with oil on a paper towel. Rub off. When all the adhesive is removed, use glass cleaner.” -- R.H. in South Carolina

A house with any kind of age will have dozens of stories to tell. I suppose if a novelist could live long enough, one could base an entire oeuvre on the lives that weave in and out of an antique house. ~Anita Shreve MAKE CUT FLOWERS LAST LONGER What would Valentine’s Day be without a beautiful bouquet of flowers? In addition to chocolate, cards and dining out, flowers - particularly roses are among the most popular gifts. According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, 58 percent of American men and 16 percent of American women were projected to buy flowers for Valentine’s Day 2016, spending a total of $1.9 billion. Similar spending is predicted for in 2017. Flowers of all shapes, sizes, colors, and aromas can make popular gifts this February. Prolonging the life of beautiful blooms is a priority for those who want their Valentine’s Day arrangements to endure for as long as possible. Keeping Valentine’s Day flowers looking fresh and vibrant takes a few steps. By being diligent, that floral arrangement can last for several days.

Child Advocacy Council of the Finger Lakes: A Voice for the Children BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

n a time when many concerns fill our world, it is so important not to lose sight of our most precious gift: children. Optimistically, one may say most parents and guardians diligently protect their children and do everything they can to ensure their well-being. Ever the optimist, one might further say most adults also look out for the welfare of children. Even so, sometimes, there are individuals who bring harm to them. When this happens, places like the Child Advocacy Center of the Finger Lakes (CACFL) help to give these children a voice while supporting them and their families in finding safety, justice, healing, and a positive way forward. The CACFL is a state and federally accredited, non-profit organization serving Ontario, Seneca, and Yates Counties. “Essentially, we coordinate child abuse investigations, and we provide an advocate for every family,” explained CACFL Executive Director Jennifer Brownell. “Whenever there is an allegation of child abuse, we bring all of the relevant agencies together, such as law enforcement and Child Protective Services.” Brownell explains that this way, the child involved does not have to repeat his or her story to each agency. “When children have to tell their story so many times, they begin to think, ‘Why do I have to tell my story again? Doesn’t anyone believe me?’ They don’t want to talk about it anymore, so they shut down and stop telling their story,” said Brownell. “The CACFL’s model brings all of these agencies together, and we provide a forensic interviewer to talk with the child in a one-on-one narrative style, avoiding leading questions. This gives the child a chance to tell his or her story in a safe, child-friendly environment as relevant professionals watch via closed circuit in another room. This model often results in better investigations and more effective prosecution while keeping children in the center and their best interests at heart.” While the CACFL’s multidisciplinary approach finds its roots in a local team over 20 years ago, the CACFL itself opened in Phelps in 2008. In 2015, CACFL moved to Canandaigua, and it now has branches in Waterloo and Penn Yan. “It has grown very quickly since then,” shared Brownell. “In 2008, we had one full-time person, and now we have six, plus three contract advocates and three contract forensic interviewers.”

A child-friendly waiting room at CACFL These advocates and forensic interviewers also make a tremendous difference. “There are many reasons for a child abuse accusation, including custody issues,” said Brownell. “Having an advocate involved makes a tremendous difference to a child because an advocate is a voice for that child. Of course, most parents keep their children’s best interests at heart, but sometimes, their intentions become clouded by their own needs. An advocate’s whole purpose is to ensure the child’s best interests are served while also working with parents and caregivers to find them the support they need. I cannot say enough good about them.” Forensic interviewers also play a crucial role. “They create a space for children to tell their stories privately and openly,” explained Brownell. “It is difficult when children are not ready to disclose, and that is why mental health support is so important. The interview is relatively short, anywhere from 20-60 minutes; however, it is forensically sound. It can be used by law enforcement and in court; no one is putting words in the child’s mouth.” Essentially, a forensic interview provides a much more solid basis upon which to build a case in family or criminal court, if necessary.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

The CACFL handles approximately 320 cases each year. While they are not all founded, this number indicates need. “Less than 50% of child abuse (nationally) is ever reported,” said Brownell. “It is worse now with the pandemic. Last spring, we saw a drop in reports, and sadly, we know it was not because children were suddenly not being abused. Children were seeing far fewer persons outside their home. While they rarely self-report, nationally, we were seeing an uptick. Jennifer Brownell, Kids had to call the hotline and report themselves because there was no one to Executive Director of CACFL report for them.” Nevertheless, there is hope, and caring adults can help. “Children need strong mentors in their lives who care about them and take the time to talk to them,” Brownell said. “Children also need mental health support to process a traumatic event. When the trauma is processed, they often become successful adults. When it is not, they often manifest depression, addiction, suicidal ideation, and other concerns.” “One abuse survivor said he did not have a CAC, and his grandparents had to sell their house to pay for the mental health services he needed,” continued Brownell with passion. “People should not have to sell their homes so that children who have been victimized can get the treatment they need. They need help healing while they are children.” Brownell pointed out that the CACFL helps fill in the gaps to pay for such services whenever possible. The CACFL’s efforts are making a difference. “We have seen an increase in arrests made and resulting convictions, which means we have created better investigations,” shared Brownell. “In April, we are launching a trauma training program for all professionals. It is also our goal to provide on-site medical exams. We are working with a provider who is undergoing training for these specialized exams, and we hope to reach our goal this spring.” “If you see something, say something,” Brownell advised. “We can help you determine – Jennifer Brownell whether or not a report should be made. Educate yourself and keep your eyes and ears open.” For more information, visit www.cacfingerlakes.org.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles New World, New Ways of Getting Things Done We’re in a whole new world now, and unfortunately it looks like it’s not returning to normal anytime soon. So many things have changed, and we need to make some adjustments to how we take care of ourselves. Timing: Whatever you need to do, do it earlier than you think you should. If you’re going to apply for Social Security, don’t wait until the last minute. Staffing might be lower than normal, with fewer workers to take up the slack. If you need an appointment, such as for an oil change for your car, do it sooner than you normally would, for the same reason. If you’ve been ordering groceries for pickup or delivery, you might notice a renewed slowdown in available time slots as stores, in many cases, have fewer clerks. Taking care of business: Even if you eligible to receive the COVID vaccine, don’t assume you can get one just by walking in. Make an appointment. Ask about parking and physical distancing. Although the shot is free to all Americans, bring your insurance card to help the provider pay for administering the vaccine. Be proactive: Do you know when your credit card expires? In the past you were likely sent a new one just before it expired, with instructions to cut up the old one. Now, with quite a few things slipping through the cracks, you might not notice your card has expired until you try to pay for a grocery order. Check your card and anything else with an expiration date, including the date of the tag renewal for your vehicle. (Note: I learned the hard way that my state is no longer sending out notices of tag expiration.)

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Hearing Loss Is Treatable! TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Let the experts at Professional Hearing Solutions help you get back to hearing life in high definition!

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Animals, Not Men Suffer Irritable Male Syndrome ---

Call Dr. Christine Stein at Professional Hearing Solutions... she provides quality care in a warm, friendly environment.

Dr. Christine Stein Au. D, FAAA

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there such a thing as irritable male syndrome, similar to PMS in women? If it is real, does it cycle yearly or monthly? My husband is negative and blames others for things at some times more than others. Also, is there a cure or ways to manage it? -- Anon. ANSWER: The term “irritable male syndrome” was coined in 2002 in a review of animal behavior, among male animals with a strictly seasonal breeding pattern. After mating season in these animals, testosterone levels drop markedly, and the animals exhibited symptoms of nervousness and irrationality. In humans, low testosterone has a set of common symptoms, including low libido and low overall energy. Loss of body hair and decreased muscle mass happen after prolonged time without testosterone. Psychiatric symptoms, such as depressed mood and anxiety, are less strongly tied to low testosterone levels. Most experts do not believe that the findings in animals are analogous to what healthy men experience. While it is possible that your husband has low testosterone, and that this level may be causing a degree of irritability, it is much more likely that his behavior has a different underlying cause than loss of testosterone. By contrast, premenstrual syndrome, where there are dramatic shifts in hormones, is clearly associated with mood swings, irritability, anxiety and depression. As the hormone changes are cyclical, so the symptoms are cyclical as well. No such cycles exist in men for testosterone. I have certainly known many irritable males, however, and anybody can be more irritable one day compared with another. I would note that, especially in men, irritability and being easily angered can be a sign of depression, among many other possibilities. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields. Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented.

THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN by Dr. Bob Arnot (NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used. A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach. Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel. Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well. On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain. In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty. Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses. Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. You can find more helpful healthcare and pain relief information from Dr. Arnot at https://us.hisamitsu/.

Stress can affect people of any age. While small amounts of stress may stimulate adrenaline responses and help people power through difficult projects or solve problems, chronic stress can impact the mind and body in harmful ways. WebMD defines stress as any change in the environment that requires the body to react and adjust in response. The body may react to stress physically, emotionally and/or mentally. Positive stress, called eustress, can take the form of getting a new job with greater responsibilities. However, it’s the bad stress - distress - that can cause tension and other negative consequences. Money, health and relationships are some of the common contributors to stress in the United States. Seventy-seven percent of Americans regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress, and 73 percent experience psychological symptoms from stress. Statistics Canada indicated that, in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available, 23 percent of Canadians ages 15 and older (6.7 million people) reported that most days were “quite a bit” or “extremely” stressful. Stress can have many implications. When the body is stressed, muscles tense up and chronic stress can cause the muscles in the body to stay taut and tense for long periods of time, says the American Psychological Association. This may lead to tension headaches and musculoskeletal disorders. The Mayo Clinic advises that stress can cause fatigue, changes in sex drive, stomach upset, and difficulty sleeping. Stress also affects mood, potentially resulting in lack of motivation or focus, anxiety, sadness, and/ or angry outbursts. Healthline links chronic stress to behaviors such as overeating, not eating enough, alcohol or drug abuse, and social withdrawal. Reducing stress is a priority for many people. Although it is not an easy undertaking, slowly removing stressors from one’s life and taking steps toward changing one’s responses to stressful situations can help. There are many stress-management strategies, and not every one is right for all individuals. However, the following techniques may be helpful. • Exercise: Regular physical activity can help reduce stress. • Meditation: Mindful meditation, deep breathing, yoga, and tai chi are ways to focus the brain away from stressful situations. • Socialization: Talking and spending time with friends or family can relieve stress. • Hobbies: Crafts, hobbies and other engaging activities can direct attention away from stress. • Talk therapy: Seeing a therapist may help some people work through stress and discover additional techniques to change how they respond to stress. • Situation changes: Changing a job, residence or a condition that removes a source of stress may be handy. Many people suffer from stress, which can be very harmful if not dealt with healthily and readily.

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. Learn More: For more findings from EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker visit www.edchoice.org.
