Science, or para-science, tells us that geraniums bloom better if they are spoken to. But a kind word every now and then is really quite enough. Too much attention, like too much feeding, and weeding and hoeing, inhibits and embarrasses them. ~Victoria Glendinning

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Upgrade walkways. Though it’s more expensive than adding planters and planting perennials, upgrading old and cracked walkways is a great way to give a property a whole new look. According to the renovation experts at HomeAdvisor, homeowners typically pay between $6 and $12 per square foot for new concrete walkway installation. Homeowners working on a budget can target spots where walkways have already cracked and fix those areas first before continuing the project piecemeal until all the old walkways have been replaced. Today’s digital world has given rise to fast, stinted communications. According to the Pew Research Center, texting is the most widely used smartphone app, with 97 percent of Americans using it at least once a day. Across the globe, 8.3 trillion text messages are sent each year. That translates to roughly 16 million messages per minute. In addition to text messaging, social media posts are generally concise and short on depth. The written form of communication has changed dramatically in the last decade, as letter-writing and other forms of prose have all but faded away. But come Valentine’s Day, it can be special to dust off that pen and paper to express oneself via the written word in the name of love. Love letters are cherished keepsakes that can be kept for years. Such couples can illustrate a couple’s present-day love for one another and shed insight on their relationship years later. Here are some steps for writing a romantic love letter or note. • Jot down ideas and inspiration. Make a list of attributes and qualities in a spouse or romantic interest that you would like to highlight. Write down phrases and terms that come to mind. These words can serve as the foundation for the letter. • Categorize your thoughts into three areas. Jot down things that you like and love about the person, things that the person may do for you or your family that you appreciate, and various memories from throughout the years. • Write what you know. Do not feel pressured to make this letter more complicated than it has to be. The words will come when you write from the heart. While you can use other letters to spur ideas, do not lose your voice or try to mimic someone else’s work. • Make the letter personal and specific. Small details are important and make love letters more meaningful. Such details illustrate to a significant other that this letter was specifically written with them in mind. • Disregard length. The letter does not have to be a certain length. Whether it is a paragraph or several pages, the letter will be a successs if it says what you want to express. It doesn’t have to be long if that’s not your style. Writing a love letter can be a wonderful way to express romantic sentiments this Valentine’s Day. Page 10

Here’s a Tip * To get a really good shine on your windows, try using newspaper instead of a paper towel. Spray the window with your cleaner and just use the paper like a towel. Practically no lint! * “We save the bread ends and any too-hard or molding bread in our freezer until we can get down to the lake and feed the birds and fish. The ducks especially love it.” -- E.F. in Wisconsin * Drop a couple of crackers (saltines) in your sugar canister if you have problems with clumping. The crackers will keep it from clumping. Just remember they are there if you dip a measuring cup in the canister. You don’t want a bunch of cracker crumbs in your sweet recipe! • Turn the car on every so often. Turning the car on, even if you only intend to let it sit idle in the driveway, keeps the vehicle components lubricated by allowing fluids to cycle their way through the engine. Turning the car on also ensures the battery stays fresh and doesn’t die. • Disconnect the battery if necessary. Drivers who own two vehicles or families who have only been using the family car in recent months can disconnect the batteries from their unused vehicles to prevent corrosion. Corrosion decreases battery life and performance. • Take the car for a spin. Of course, driving a vehicle every so often is a great way to keep it running strong.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Hi I’m Canela. I’m a pitbull mixed with a labrador, and I am 1 year old and 6 months! I love to play and eat work boots. LOL.
Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com • Share With Us, or mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at descretion of GVPS.
Cat’s scratching may be allergies, or something more DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, Buster, has been scratching under his chin for days, and the skin underneath the fur there is getting raw. What is causing this, and how do I stop the scratching and treat the injured skin? -- David G., Buffalo, New York DEAR DAVID: It’s clear that something is aggravating your cat and causing him to scratch in just one spot. The problem could be dry skin -- not unusual for pets or humans in the middle of winter -- or allergies. It may also be an infection, a parasite (mites or ringworm) or an allergic reaction to fleas. If the area that Buster is scratching is not infected, you can try a few home remedies to try to relieve the itching. Oatmeal, cooked and then cooled, is one option. Plain yogurt is another. And coconut oil may help moisturize and protect the skin. Dab one of these gently onto the itchy area. (Just a very thin coat; don’t pile it on.) Repeat as needed. If fleas are an issue, treat both your cat and your home to reduce and eliminate these little pests. Vacuum carpets thoroughly. Sweep all the corners and underneath furniture to remove dust bunnies, where fleas and their eggs can hide. If these remedies don’t work within a couple of days, or if your cat exhibits signs of infection or illness, contact the veterinarian. They need to take a look and see what exactly is causing the itching. They’ll also have medication on hand to combat the itch (hydrocortisone, for one) and treat infection. If Buster is scratching compulsively, they may put him into an E-collar (aka the “Cone of Shame”) for a few days to let the spot heal fully. (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Though office work might not be the first profession individuals think of in relation to elevating one’s cancer risk, sitting at a desk for most of the day can increase a person’s risk for cancer. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, sitting for most of the day without engaging in physical activity puts individuals at increased risk for cancer. How much extra risk does that entail? Though no two individuals are the same, studies have equated sitting for eight hours a day without any physical activity to the risk posed by obesity and smoking. The DFCI notes that sitting over long periods of time has been known to cause increased blood pressure, high cholesterol and excess body fat around the waist, each of which have been identified as factors that increase a person’s risk for cancer.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Ablation Is Only Recommended If Meds Are Intolerable --DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 67-year-old man who developed typical atrial flutter two years ago, but I haven’t had any symptoms that I am aware of. I don’t have a history of heart problems. My heart rate was 117 bpm while experiencing atrial flutter. My cardiologist recommended an ablation, as that can be curative. He specializes in electrophysiology. The ablation was successful, and my heart rate was in the low 60s afterward. Six months ago, atrial fibrillation (AFib) showed up, but again, there weren’t any real symptoms for me. My heart rate is nice and low, and I never really feel any problems ... perhaps some fatigue. But at 67, I can’t always distinguish this from the feeling of getting older. I’m on Xarelto and a low dose of carvedilol. My blood pressure is good. Is it worth having an ablation of the pulmonary veins to try and stop AFib? Or is it better to just live with an irregular heartbeat? Apparently, it’s best to have an ablation sooner rather than later, so I’ll need to decide as soon as possible. -- D.S. ANSWER: Atrial flutter is an abnormally fast heart rhythm that starts in one of the top chambers of the heart, usually the right atrium. The heart rate in the atria is very fast, typically 240-300 bpm, which is faster than any adult heart can beat. It is common that every other impulse in the atria gets transmitted to the ventricle, so a pulse rate in the range of 120-150 bpm would be typical. Catheter ablation prevents the progression of the fast impulse to the rest of the heart, and it is successful 65% to 100% of the time in various studies. Unfortunately, studies have also shown that somewhere between 7% and 44% of those who had a successful catheter ablation for atrial flutter will later have a recurrence -- or more commonly develop AFib. This is called a chaotic arrythmia and can cause a fast heart rate, but more importantly, the lack of coordinated heart contractions in the atria can predispose people to the development of a clot in the atrium. The clot can then float downstream where it can lodge and cause damage, specifically a stroke. Each year, a percentage of 5% of people with AFib will develop a stroke without treatment. Treatment is designed to relieve symptoms and reduce stroke risk -- your cardiologist has already achieved both of these aims pretty well. The carvedilol is a beta blocker that helps keep the heart rate under control, and Xarelto is effective at reducing stroke risk. In my opinion, there isn’t a need to consider another treatment like an ablation, which has a small but real potential for serious side effects. In fact, it is not 100% effective; about 70% to 75% of patients are symptom-free a year after the procedure. Many people need to continue anticoagulants like Xarelto even after a successful catheter ablation. I recommend ablation for people who cannot tolerate medication treatment for their symptoms.

Colder Weather: How To Manage Your Blood Pressure & Health High blood pressure means that the force of blood pushing through your body is too strong. That pressure puts a strain on your arteries, which carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. In colder weather, blood vessels constrict more than normal, which raises blood pressure. • Practice healthy habits: Being physically active, eating healthy & limiting alcohol can be critical to managing your high blood pressure year round, especially during fall and winter. Try to get up and move for at least 30 minutes each day. As the weather changes, modify your exercise routine to include raking leaves, shoveling snow or walking indoors at a mall. • Measure and monitor your blood pressure regularly. Blood pressure monitors are inexpensive and can be purchased at pharmacies and other stores. Many supermarkets and pharmacies have machines that take and record your blood pressure. More than one in three Americans have high blood pressure. To measure, monitor and maintain your blood pressure all year round and learn more about this disease, please visit MeasureUpPressureDown.com.

SAY “I LOVE YOU” WITH MUSIC Music can express many emotions, be a source of comfort and encouragement or simply induce a peaceful state of mind. For those looking to express their love for a special someone, songs with or without lyrics can help convey such feelings. Music lovers may greatly appreciate songs chosen especially for them in honor of Valentine’s Day. Therefore, as a heart-warming gift, curate a special selection of songs that can be gifted to a loved one. Even though it’s an inexpensive way to show you care, the meaning behind the gift can be profound. While “mix tapes” of the 1990s may have fallen out of favor, individuals who subscribe to streaming music services can do something similar by establishing custom playlists. Look to options such as Pandora, Amazon Music, and Spotify for inspiration. For those who want to go a little further, upload audio versions of several songs and create a YouTube video montage featuring meaningful photos. When considering which songs to include, think about “Endless Love,” which Billboard places in the No. 1 spot on its list of the top 50 love songs. This song remained at the top of the charts for nine weeks in 1981 and features the vocal talents of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. Page 22

Just for Today: Jason Franciamore’s Journey from Addiction to Inspiration BY MARCHA FOX
D
eaths from fentanyl keep rising, hundreds each day succumbing. As more individuals lose friends and loved ones, the reason to “get clean” has never been more evident. Former addict, Jason Franciamore, has been through a crucible of consequences for foolish actions, yet ultimately came out of it all refined. Nothing says it better than his own words posted on Facebook in 2021 on his fifth anniversary of being clean: “Thank you to the arresting officer [on April 22, 2016] that didn’t ‘let me make it’ [get away without arrest or citation]. I’ll never forget the look on his face after he read me my rights. He said, ‘Sir, do you understand?’ With big ol’ watery eyes, I looked into his and said, ‘Thank you,’ As I was sitting in the back of the police car, I just closed my eyes and told myself, ‘Today is the day, today I die so I can live again.’ Needless to say, things got ‘real’ real quick for me. I was so relieved to put an end to that life, but I didn’t realize that just not doing drugs doesn’t magically fix your life. “You see, I was a ‘successful’ addict; I mean in the eyes of society’s ‘success.’ I think I made $312,000 at my job in the 14 months I worked there. Yes, the best I’d ever done, and they even paid my cash bond to get me out [of jail] previously and didn’t ask any questions. They didn’t care what I did; they just wanted me at work. I ended up losing that job. I didn’t care. I had money and I thought that’s all that mattered. However, my wife had some time to think, too. She was obviously tired of the ‘poor Jason’ card being played and finally left me.
Anonymous (NA) motto, “Just For Today.” Jason’s dream for years was to make an actual watch like that to help others as it did him. It would be a watch that reminded you every time you looked at it to stay clean and on the road to recovery, even if “just for today.” Last October, Jason applied for a registered trademark for “Just for Today” in the timepiece category. That process, as most that involve the government, takes months, but it’s in progress and shows up in the U.S. Patent Office database. Since then, Jason’s company, Just for Today Timepieces, has grown to include an increasing number of inspirational clocks, Wartime Hero dog tags designed for those “fighting a battle that no one else can see,” and a plethora of coffee mugs with original quotes and inspirational phrases. Jason’s clocks display his specialty in what he dubs “12isms,” where numbers are replaced with the word or words of a message.
“I asked the Lord to show me the way. My prayers and I’m sure lots of others were being answered. I could have never imagined that my prayers being answered would first take me through hell. There is so much more to this story I could share for hours. [Now], however, is about [eight] years of not living under [the] strain of addiction. Thank you, Lord, for this, and thank you to all my family and friends for loving me through this journey. “For people that don’t know me personally. I lost everything eight years ago because of everything I did during my 13-year run of active addiction. I have graciously been blessed with the restoration of everything I had lost. It hasn’t been easy, and my life is far from perfect, but I couldn’t ask for a better life than the one I’m living now.” As a recovering addict, Franciamore wants to help others walking that rough road. One thing that helped him get through the difficult process is a tattoo on his arm of a clock face. It is no ordinary clock. The numbers were replaced with the twelve letters of the Narcotics

Page 24
Jason founded a watch company that fulfills at least part of his dream. The next stage is to be profitable enough so he can give them away to those setting out on their own path to being clean. That day is hopefully coming soon. Love to write? You could earn CASH when you share your original story, personal experience, community happening or school event with us! PLEASE Please don’t sit in your car using a handicap spot waiting for your person. It takes away from those who truly need it. You can drop them off in front of the store and then sit in the front and wait for them. You can see them come out. It’s okay as long as you stay in your car. It’s so hard for me and others truly walking disabled, especially coming out of the store after being on my feet to have to walk any distance whatsoever. And when I see people sitting in the closest handicap spots just upsets me. It’s bad enough we know that there’s people who truly don’t need a handicap spot. I know many of them who do lots of yard work very easily then have a handicap sticker.
Thank you I live in Henrietta and I want to thank the CHS Ambulance crew that helped me Saturday, January 27th around 5:00 PM.
