(NAPSI)—According to the Federal Reserve Board, four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected expense of $400, would either not be able to cover it or would cover it by selling something or borrowing money. If you’re ever among them, or the 78 percent of American workers who live paycheck to paycheck, you can assist yourself. It can pay to consider these six hints that can help you save: 1. Know your numbers. Keep track of where you spend your money. Include groceries, gas, utilities, entertainment, housing and debts. 2. Make tough choices. Distinguish between things you need (utilities, debt payments and rent) and things you want (vacations, eating out). Subtract what you have to spend on “needs” from your monthly income to determine what you have left for “wants.” 3. Pay yourself first. Have a percentage of each paycheck routed automatically into your savings account. Saving needs to be a priority—consider it a “need.” 4. Expect the unexpected. No matter how well you budget, life may throw the unexpected at you. 5. Keep your stuff in shape. Similarly, keeping major appliances and vehicles in good condition can help you save. 6. Comparison shop for financial products. Take the time to compare insurance policies, bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. For instance, there’s the new Unlimited Cash Back Bank Account, by Green Dot Bank. With this account, Green Dot pays its cardholders a 3 percent cash back bonus when they make online or in-app purchases. People spend lots of money online at various websites and buy through apps, such as ride sharing, video streaming and meal delivery services, so getting an additional 3 percent cash back on the things you normally buy anyhow can add up. What’s more, you can earn 3 percent annual interest when you save your money in the Green Dot Bank HighYield Savings Account (Member FDIC)—higher than what many banks pay in annual interest. It’s free with the app and the interest earned is automatically added to your annual Cash Back Bonus amount. To sign up for the account or learn more about it, go to the Green Dot app or www.GreenDot.com.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

Does COVID Restrict Travel With Pets? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m driving from New York to Colorado for a long-term contract job, and my two dogs will be coming with me. My roommate in New York is flying with my cat about a week later, because I don’t think my cat will do well on a long car trip (and I’m worried about her escaping). Are there any restrictions on pets traveling by plane or staying in hotels at this time? -- Beth G., Brooklyn

We’re open by appointment. Please call. We have over 30 years experience!

USES FOR FALLEN LEAVES Store dried, mulched leaves in a dry spot so they can be used in the spring as a weed barrier for spring plantings. They will keep weeds at bay and help retain soil moisture to ensure small sprouts have the resources to grow.

THE SECRETS TO COLD WEATHER ENTERTAINING

Get Ready for Winter!

Outdoor entertaining in winter may be challenging, especially in regard to keeping everyone warm. The following are some solutions that can help people stay warm and have fun outside.

We are now your local Lopi Dealer. Visit our Avon Store to see our wide range of heating options.

Berkshire 3-Sided Glass Cast Iron Gas Stove

• Fire pits can be great places for friends and family to gather around and enjoy special occasions. They’re readily available from garden centers and home improvement retailers at a variety of price points. Permanent fire pits can be built by a homeowner or professionally built by masonry experts. • Outdoor fireplaces add warmth, and improve the ambiance and value of an outdoor entertaining area. Set up outdoor furniture right next to an outdoor fireplace and you have a cozy alternative living room. • Outdoor heating devices are far more effective than average fire pits or fireplaces. One or two heaters will be enough to keep a large entertaining area warm.

NEW WAY EQUIPMENT HOME & POOL CENTER

• Guests should dress warmly, but having a basket of throw blankets, scarves and parkas available for extra warmth while mingling is helpful. Use outdoor rugs to insulate from the cold from the ground up.

226-3950 • 226-2212

• Stews, chilis, soups, and other hot foods can help guests warm themselves up from the inside out. Warmed cider, hot chocolate and mulled wines also can be served to help people stay warm.

Mon. - Fri. 8am-4:30pm; Sat. 8am-noon; Closed Sunday www.newwaypools.com • Service Since 1953

• Incorporate activities that encourage guests to move around and stay warm.

DEAR BETH: It sounds like you’re doing your planning well in advance, and that’s great. Your dogs should be secured in the car while you’re traveling. Depending on their size and the type of car, they can be placed in a large kennel cage in the cargo area (with comfy beds, chew toys and access to water). Or they can stretch out on the back seat -- use a restraint device designed to keep dogs from sliding around the car or escaping from the vehicle. Many hotels are pet-friendly and have modified their cleaning procedures so that the hotel rooms will be clean and ready for the next guest. And more good news: Your friend and your cat can probably travel together in the airline cabin, as long as your cat is in a carrier (hard or soft sided) that will fit underneath the seat in front of your friend. (Some airlines are no longer shipping pets in the cargo area due to the disrupted flight schedules.) Book the airline seat with a pet option as soon as possible. Airlines allow a limited number of pets to travel in the cabin, even in a carrier. Those slots may fill up fast. Likewise for hotels: Book the rooms as soon as possible so that you know a pet-friendly room is waiting for you and your dogs.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Yard sales sponsored by churches and other charities can be a great source of bargains, especially at this time of year. Since they are a fundraiser, usually with donated items, they are motivated to sell, even if it’s at a lower price. Oftentimes you can get items that still have tags, which make great gifts. * “If your toothpaste is almost done, just snip off the top and dip your brush in the container. There’s usually more in the tube.” -- T.D. in Kentucky * If someone has written on your dry erase board with a permanent marker, try writing over it with a dry erase marker. Sometimes this works to remove the permanent marker. * Wrap a bit of tape sticky side out around a straightened-out paper clip. You can GENTLY put it in the headphone jack to get out lint that is otherwise inaccessible. Also, keep a lint-free cloth that comes with glasses handy to clean the screen of your smartphone.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Social Security Increase for 2021 The news is out. Our Social Security benefit increase starting in January 2021 will be less than it was for 2020. Instead of the 1.6% increase we received this year, they're cutting us back to 1.3% for Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income. For the average recipient, this comes to a whopping $20 per month. The average benefit will be $1,543 per month and $2,596 for a couple. The retirement earnings test exempt amount will change in 2021 as well. If you're not yet at full retirement age, the annual exempt amount will be $18,960 per year. During the first year you reach full retirement age, the limit will be $50,520 per year (before the month you reach that age). The way this is supposed to work is that when the annual inflation rate goes down, our cost of living adjustment also goes down. We allegedly don't need as much money to get through the month. (Although the cost of our groceries has gone up, the price of gas has gone down because no one is going anywhere now.) The Senior Citizens League guesstimated correctly a few months ago that our increase would be 1.3% -- the second lowest increase ever. Meanwhile our Medicare Part B premium continues to climb. The good news there is the "hold harmless" clause in the regulations. If the Medicare premium rises enough that it overtakes our Social Security increase, the dollar amount of the Part B premium will be reduced so we don't end up with fewer Social Security dollars than we received this year. This applies to most but not all of us. Keep an eye on the Senior Citizens League (seniorsleague.org). They fight for us when it comes to drug costs, veterans benefits, Medicare, Social Security and more. They're in Alexandria, Virginia, right across the river from Washington, D.C., and the halls of Congress.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Enjoy Your Hunting Season W/O Damaging Your Hearing

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

CPAP Could Help With Sleep Apnea ---

Order Your Custom Hearing Protection Now!

DEAR DR. ROACH: How are sleep apnea, sighing and heart failure related? Recently, I was told that I have severe sleep apnea and that I must use a CPAP machine. I have noticed that during the day I frequently take a spontaneous deep breath. Is that sleep apnea while awake? I have coronary heart disease and have three stents. Will the CPAP machine help me in any way? -- A.P. ANSWER: It’s complicated. By far, the most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens in people who are overweight, or in people whose neck anatomy predisposes them to the condition. During sleep, the upper airway collapses, preventing proper inspiration. This can be noticed by a sleep partner as choking, gasping or just not breathing for a prolonged time. The person eventually will wake up enough, due to lack of oxygen, to be able to take in a good breath, but will then fall back asleep. The process may happen hundreds of times a night, with the person often unaware. Sleepiness during the day (from never sleeping properly at night) and snoring are the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, which uses high pressure to keep the airway open, is the most common initial treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. In severe sleep apnea, the oxygen level in the blood can be so low for so long that the heart and lungs can be damaged, eventually leading to a type of heart failure of the right side of the heart. However, the situation is even more complex. People who have other kinds of heart failure, such as from repeated heart attacks, can develop the less common form of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea. Although this also may be treated by CPAP, it is critical to treat the underlying heart failure as well. Your doctor can tell you whether you have central or obstructive sleep apnea. Spontaneous deep breaths (sighs) are a part of normal human physiology. Sighs have several purposes, but the most important is to help keep the lungs properly expanded. Sighs might be more common in people with heart failure, but I do not know of any correlation with sleep apnea. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Are deodorants containing aluminum safe to use? The brands that do not contain aluminum are much less effective. I am concerned about absorbing the aluminum from the deodorant and its effect on the brain. -- D.M. ANSWER: That’s a myth. The amount of aluminum in antiperspirants is negligible. Deodorants that aren’t also antiperspirants don’t contain aluminum. The aluminum mechanically blocks the sweat glands in the armpit, and 99.99% of it is not absorbed into the body. Longterm studies of people taking aluminum-based antacid (which is also poorly absorbed) have shown no increased risk of dementia. The body has several ways of removing the small amounts of aluminum we absorb, mostly via the kidneys. Aluminum toxicity IS a potential problem for people with kidney disease on dialysis, but the small amounts of aluminum in antiperspirants is too small to worry about even in those cases. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned about the health effects of aluminum on the brain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away. 4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2

What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved: • 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3 • 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4

HOW TO RAKE LEAVES M ORE EFFICIENTLY Wait for the majority of leaves to drop before beginning your w ork. If you start too early in the season, you may end up raking multiple times and that is not time-efficient.

Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8

To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign.

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air.

Bears & Dolls Join the Fight Against Childhood

Cancer

BY AMANDA DUDEK

S

eptember is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. If you didn’t know that, you are not alone. Lynne Stiefler of Henrietta, a retired pediatric oncology nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital, is working to change that both by bringing joy into the lives of children battling cancer, as well as by bringing awareness of their Lynne Stiefler struggle to others. As a senior level bone marrow pediatric nurse and educator, Stiefler had interacted with many children fighting cancer and their families. After retiring, she continued to connect with them and felt she had to do something to encourage these brave children. So, in 2013, Stiefler launched Cure Bears for Hope and Love. She purchases Build-a-Bears, each with an outfit, and sends each one to a child who is in active treatment for cancer. “About 2,500 bears have been sent out across the country to date,” she shared. They have been sent to children in all 50 states; however, we try to stick with the lower 48. We do concentrate within our own area and deliver them locally, as well.” As requests for the bears grew, so did support. “People connect with me to support what we do,” said Stiefler, noting that Cure Bears is not an official nonprofit. “It is also popular for people to return their cans and bottles at Upstate Bottle Return locations in Avon, Henrietta, Brockport, Caledonia, Holley, Medina, Albion, Greece, and Penfield. They simply state the returns are in support of Cure Bears, and we receive a check from them. We raised about $5,000 in 6 months.” Stiefler knows from her nursing experience the positive effects such a simple gift can have. “The bears often go through treatment with the child,” she Little girl hugs her Cure Bear! explained. “One five-yearold, little girl from Nebraska dressed her bear like a superhero when it was going in with her for chemo or radiation. When they were doing other things, she dressed it in ordinary clothes. She said the bear was only a superhero when it was fighting cancer. How incredible for a five-year-old to say that!” Last year, Stiefler added something new. In September 2019, Wal-Mart released My Life as Survivor dolls, a doll similar in style to American Girl dolls, but created to resemble a girl who has undergone treatment for childhood cancer. Stiefler began purchasing and gifting these dolls to children in Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Canada. When she brought one for a friend’s daughter in Kentucky, she soon received requests for more. “Originally, Wal-Mart had only planned on producing this doll as a special edition from September 2019-September 2020, in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness month,” said Stiefler. “I started a petition to keep the dolls in production. Wal-Mart saw my petition, and one of their executives along with a representative

from the company which manufactures the doll reached out to me. They said they now planned to continue producing the Survivor doll and said they would like to send me some.” Then, COVID-19 brought our country to a near standstill. “With the pandemic, I hadn’t heard from them, and I honestly only expected a few,” said Stiefler. “Wal-Mart sent us 50 to deliver. I was wowed! They have all been delivered, My Life as Survivor doll and we have probably sent over next to a real life hero! 250 at this point. These dolls are a good thing. They give a child something with which to identify when they lose their hair.” The response to the dolls has been incredible. “We are typically limited to shipping in the continental US due to costs,” explained Stiefler. “One mother contacted me and explained that her daughter was in treatment. She asked me if I would consider sending her daughter a Survivor doll, but she was in South Africa. Fortunately, she had a friend in the United States with an address to which I could send the doll. That friend sent the doll to this little girl, and the little girl was so excited. There are so many photos I have received of happy children who have received our bears and dolls.” Lynne Stiefler hopes she will be able to continue - Lynne Stiefler sending Cure Bears and Survivor dolls to children and their families. “These are a tangible reminder that no child is fighting cancer alone,” she said. “With the pandemic, these children are more isolated than ever before. They really love getting something in the mail. Right now, it is even more meaningful.” To learn more or to donate, visit Cure Bears for Hope and Love on Facebook.

A Kind Gesture Goes a Long Way A few weeks back, my husband dropped his vehicle off for some work. Just prior to the business closing, they contacted him and stated they lost his keys, and the work did not get performed. As you can imagine, he was very upset. The next morning, we went to pick up his vehicle with our extra set of keys. (The business did offer to replace the key.) Later that afternoon, a kind and very thoughtful person knocked at our door with the paperwork and keys. We thanked him several times, but I wanted to share this story, because there are wonderful people out there, and they do make a lasting impression on others. He could have simply dropped them off to the place of

service, but he knew that key fobs are very pricey to replace. You went above and beyond! Thank you for renewing my hope in the human race.

Bad Driveway Recently, I had my driveway black topped. Before it was started, I asked the owner, who came out and gave me the estimate, if it was going to be a smooth finish. He assured me it would be. After I got it done, it was not a smooth finish. You can see all the stones almost as if it wasn’t rolled enough. It had a couple holes in it, and now there’s even grass growing up through it. The driveway is not even close to being level or a pitch away from my garage. I also said I didn’t want any rain coming into it and again was assured it would not happen. Guess what? I’m getting a lot of water into my garage now. Also, when they were rolling the driveway close to my garage, they damaged the trim and left. Now, they won’t fix that either.

To Daycamper In response to your annoyance with “noisy” neighbors who are bothering you with lawn mowing, power tools, etc.: Did it occur to you that the reason your neighbors are so noisy is because they can’t go anywhere! Due to Covid-19, everyone was stuck at home all summer for the most part. There were no vacations or festivals or carnivals or any kind of entertainment available the entire summer. I know we took advantage of the home time by doing home improvement projects and so on, and I’m sure we were probably noisy, as well. You can’t fault your neighbors for living their lives. Perhaps if you are so bothered by neighbors, you should consider relocating to the country away from all those annoying people.

Pleasant Surprise To the person who was at the Canandaigua McDonald’s drive through on Friday, October 23 at 4:45pm. What a pleasant surprise when we were told you paid for our order. Thank you for your kindness.

I agree! To the person who responded to Daycamper who complained about noise: I wholeheartedly agree with your logical comments. What gives lately? Neighbors complaining about noise.... having something to say about music and everything else. They need to wake up and smell the roses and stop pointing a finger. They need to get a life or move in the country where they will only be able to hear their own noise. I feel sorry for people like that who are apparently so lonely and unhappy that they have nothing better to do than to complain about trivial matters.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

COMMUNICATION: Communication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix.
