CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE

FOUR SEASONS

Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME

Wind Damaged Roofs?

Privet hedge, arborvitae or Italian cypress are fast-growing evergreens that provide privacy around a home for homeowners who do not want to install traditional fencing. These trees also provide a natural habitat for various yard animals. Layering various plants of different heights and textures also can create a more natural and less imposing look. Fencing remains a viable option to create privacy and stop noise pollution. Privacy fences come in various materials, colors and sizes, enabling homeowners to choose styles that fit their landscapes.

St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with many things, most notably the jovial atmosphere of the various events celebrating both the life of St. Patrick and Irish culture. New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are known for the Big Apple’s impressive parade up Fifth Avenue, while few who have partaken of Patty’s Day festivities in Chicago can forget the green Chicago River. Celebrations may vary from city to city, but it’s a good bet that celebrants will hear some traditional Irish music, enjoy a pint of Guinness and/or join the masses wearing green wherever they end up this St. Patrick’s Day. Drinking Irish coffee is another St. Patrick’s Day tradition many revelers enjoy. Few may indulge in Irish coffee throughout the year, but this special concoction can be a great way to warm up after attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the often chilly March temperatures. Cocktails made with coffee date back quite far, but Irish coffee does not have to go back too far to trace its history. In the mid-20th century, chef Joe Sheridan was working in Foynes, County Limerick when a group of United States-bound travelers found themselves stranded due to inclement weather that grounded their plane. Whether he was trying to warm them up or wake them up after their ordeal, Sheridan served the passengers coffee with a little bit of Irish whiskey mixed in. When the group inquired as to what they were drinking, Sheridan reportedly told them, “that’s Irish coffee.”

HOMETOWN spel The Go Corner Will You Go To Heaven When You Die? “Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved,” (Acts 4:12) “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10, 11). We live in a day and age of man’s ideas and philosophies, yet the Word of God stands paramount. Religion says that Mary, Joseph, or some saint can make intercession for you. The Bible says, “Neither is the salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” That name is: THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. We must come as repentant sinners to the all-sufficient Saviour to become saints. We must not trust man-made religion; we must go God’s way. God’s way is a Person! “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) Repent of your sin and “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” (Acts 16:31).

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com. Frederick Douglass’ Great-great-great-Grandson Praises Pittsford-Mendon High School Students BY NANCY WAYMAN

K

enneth B. Morris, Jr., the great-great-great-grandson of Frederick Douglass and Co-Founder/President of the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives (FDFI) and Robert Benz, Co-Founder/Executive Director of FDFI, participated in a classroom discussion via Zoom on Wednesday, March 3rd, about the award-winning art Pittsford-Mendon High School (PMHS) students from Ms. Zakalik’s Drawing & Painting II class created for a FDFI contest to honor Frederick Douglass’ wife, Anna Murray Douglass. With only two known images of Anna Murray Douglass, FDFI asked Rochester area students to submit artwork depicting how she may have looked at different stages of her life as part of the Centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment. Pittsford students and staff were joined virtually by PCSD Superintendent Michael Pero, Pittsford Town Supervisor Bill Smith, and Village Mayor Bob Corby who offered their congratulations to Pittsford-Mendon High School students Holy Kim and Mina Stevens who won Pittsford-Mendon Student, Holy Kim won 1st place with her artwork depicting Anna 1st and 3rd place, Murray Douglass bringing people escaping slavery into her home. respectively, and to all the Pittsford students who created artwork to honor the legacy of Anna Murray Douglass. Holy Kim’s award-winning painting depicts a scene of Anna Murray Douglass as she brings people escaping slavery into her home, while Mina Stevens’ painting shows Anna Murray Douglass as the North Star – a symbol of freedom and hope for slaves. Paintings created by PMHS students Amy Zhou, Holy Kim, and Danielle Strauf were made into banners to hang at the FDFI headquarters in Rochester. Inspired by the talented artwork of Pittsford students, Morris reached out to the District to arrange a Zoom discussion so that he could talk to students about the significance of their artwork and how it ties into the history of his ancestors, local history, and the current and planned work of the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives. The inspiration for this meeting, he said, was in the art Pittsford-Mendon High School students submitted to the contest. “The care and detail exemplified in the student artwork spoke to the incredible, but little-known history of Anna Murray Douglass and her involvement in abolition,” said Morris. “I was moved by the story the art told and the obvious interest the students had for that story.” “The artwork our students created as part of the Anna Murray Douglass Life in Portrait Contest is so inspiring and

ties into the greater conversation about race and the importance of recognizing and celebrating historic Black figures,” said Pittsford Schools Superintendent Michael Pero. “One of Pittsford Central School District’s key initiatives is around Danielle Strauf standing beside her diversity, equity and representation of Anna Murray Douglass inclusion, and this is a wonderful example of how that work comes to life in our classrooms,” he said. Holy Kim looked forward to furthering the conversation about race and equity with Morris during the March 3rd Zoom discussion. “Having the chance to speak with Mr. Morris was an exciting opportunity not only to gain more insight on Frederick and Anna Douglass, but also to learn about how being their descendant affects Mr. Morris’ everyday life and beliefs, especially right I was now,” said Kim. “I [looked] moved by forward to gaining more understanding on his the story perspective of racial the art discrimination and how to seek justice, and about how told! we as people can uphold - Kenneth B. Morris, Jr. Frederick and Anna Douglass’ legacy today.” To learn more about the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives, visit https://fdfi.org/. A gallery of the Anna Murray Douglass artwork created by PMHS Drawing & Painting II students can be viewed on the District’s Facebook page. Enjoy this article? NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “When thickening soup, don’t overlook instant mashed potato mix. It’s perfect for making a thin broth into a nice, thick stew sauce, and it’s pretty cheap. It only takes a couple of tablespoons.” -- I.F. in Utah * “Cut kitchen sponges into smaller pieces. They clean as well as a larger sponge, and you can dispose of the smaller pieces when they get yucky.” -- O.C. in Michigan * Don’t forget to clean out your dryer’s lint trap regularly. It can get clogged up, and that can be a fire hazard. Set a reminder on your phone to vacuum it out once a month. * If you have high boots, you can use this trick to keep them looking good and upright in storage. Simply use 1-liter soda bottles. They can be empty, or you can poke some small holes around the bottom and add a little baking soda, which will keep the boots dry and odor free. * Ficus trees can remove up to 80% formaldehyde in the air. Other great indoor air-cleaning plants include peace lilies, ivies, spider plants and ferns. * “Have you overdyed your hair at home? Try washing your hair with a dandruff shampoo. You may have to repeat it, but dandruff shampoo can sometimes get the extra color out of your hair follicles. Make sure that you condition well afterward.” -- B.R. in Georgia

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Here Are 2 New Scams to Watch Out For They never stop. Scammers are continually busy, and so must we be to stay one step ahead of them. Here are two more scams they’re trying to foist on us. If you’re still working and receive W-2 or 1099 forms, look them over very carefully. If it’s a 1099-G, that’s for unemployment benefits. Did you receive those benefits? If not, it means that a scammer has used your identity to collect benefits. Those 1099-G forms go to the IRS, and that income is taxable. Contact the unemployment office that issued the 1099-G and have them send a corrected form showing zero unemployment income. If you can’t get the corrected form in time, file your taxes without using that 1099-G dollar amount and enclose a note saying you didn’t receive unemployment benefits. The IRS is well aware of this problem. Then send for your credit report, check it and put a freeze on your credit. In another new scam, if you do an online search for a big box store and the first result on the list says “Ad” in front of the store name, don’t click it. This scam is especially sneaky because if you click on the “Ad” link, you’ll initially go to a page that looks very real. It isn’t. Clicking it will take you to a site that may freeze your screen ... and provide you a handy phone number to call to have the problem fixed. The person at the other end is a scammer who will ask for permission to access your computer remotely. If you allow it, he’ll put a bug in your computer that locks everything up, and you’ll have to pay to get it released. Instead of doing a search, type in the Internet address of the store you want (call them if you’re not sure what it is) and go directly there.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Here at Home Is Good… TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

We thrive in providing our patients with care that improves their quality of life.

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Deep Vein Thrombosis Usually Due to Surgery --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 47-year-old woman. Five years ago, I developed a blood clot in my left leg after fracturing my ankle and being immobilized for several months. I was put on a blood thinner, and my ankle healed. Recently that leg started swelling again, and I went for an ultrasound. I was told that I have a chronic DVT, but that I don’t need blood thinners. Why do I not need a blood thinner now when I did before? What does “chronic” mean? Why am I getting swelling again five years after the first clot? -- L.S.B. ANSWER: Blood clots can happen in veins or arteries, but the type that happen due to surgery and immobilization are almost always in the vein. That’s the “V” in “DVT,” which stands for “deep vein thrombosis.” A brand-new blood clot has a high risk of propagating further up the vein, and also of breaking off and traveling through the vein into the heart. Most often, the clot will go on into the lungs, then called a “pulmonary embolus.” But in the rare case, the clot can go through a patent foramen ovale, which is sometimes called a hole in the heart, and cause a stroke. Because of the risk of life-threatening complications, acute DVTs are treated with anticoagulants, such as warfarin (Coumadin) or apixaban (Eliquis). This stabilizes the clot, and after a week or two the risk of propagation or embolization becomes much lower. Most people are treated for at least three months for maximum benefit. Treatment does not dissolve the clot, and a follow-up ultrasound will detail changes that show the clot is no longer acute, hence “chronic.” The vein itself is scarred and damaged, and never returns to normal. “Chronic DVT” isn’t the best term, since it confuses many, both patients and physicians alike. I prefer scarred, and some experts use “chronic luminal changes” to differentiate it from an acute clot. Whatever it is called, it may still be symptomatic. Most people with a history of a large clot in one leg will notice that leg swells more than the other in heat or with a large salt load. Even so, anticoagulant treatment is neither necessary nor helpful. Effective treatment for swelling associated with previous DVT includes salt restriction, compression stockings and leg elevation several times during the day. People with more severe symptoms that do not respond to conservative management may benefit from more aggressive therapies, such as placement of a metal stent to let the blood flow better through the damaged area.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF SPINACH • Spinach is good for your bones. Green foods, including kale, spinach and brussel sprouts, are great sources of vitamin K and calcium, each of which promotes healthy bones. • Spinach can help fight off viruses. Leafy green vegetables, including spinach, are loaded with vitamins and nutrients that strengthen the body’s immune response. • Spinach promotes a healthy heart. Spinach is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, B vitamins, and fiber, making it a heart-healthy food worthy of addition to anyone’s diet. • Spinach can benefit your eyes. Spinach is high in the antioxidant lutein. Lutein naturally absorbs UV blue light, which is the most harmful wavelength of sunlight. Uncooked spinach tends to be the most effective way to consume it and still benefit from lutein.

CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE FOR ST. PATTY’S DAY Corned beef and cabbage might not be a part of many people’s diet regimens throughout the year. But come March 17, it’s not uncommon to find people from all walks of life indulging in this beloved meal. March 17 marks the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Over the years, the day has also become a celebration of the Emerald Isle. Such celebrations tend to feature corned beef and cabbage, even though the dish may have little to do with Ireland (and even less to do with St. Patrick). The precise origins of the link between corned beef and St. Patrick’s Day remain a topic of debate, but some historians say the corned beef enjoyed today can be traced to New York City’s Irish immigrant population in the 19th and 20th centuries, who popularized a salted meat made from brisket that was then sold by Jewish butchers. Regardless of the authenticity of its link to Ireland, corned beef is delicious and many modern Paddy’s Day celebrants wouldn’t think of going without it on March 17. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Farfalle with Crabmeat, Asparagus, Scrambled Eggs, Garlic, and Herbs Makes 4 to 6 servings 1 pound farfalle 1⁄2 pound asparagus, trimmed and sliced diagonally, 1⁄4-inch thick 10 extra-large eggs 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 garlic clove, minced 1⁄4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving 2 tablespoons heavy cream 1⁄2 pound cooked lump crabmeat, picked over to remove any bits of shell or cartilage 1⁄4 cup finely chopped fresh chives 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh Italian parsley Freshly ground black pepper Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the farfalle and cook until al dente, following the manufacturer’s suggested cooking time. About 2 minutes before the pasta is done, add the asparagus. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, beat the eggs with a fork or whisk until slightly frothy. Set aside. When the pasta and asparagus are done, drain and set aside. Immediately melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the pasta and asparagus and toss briefly to coat them with the butter mixture. Pour in the eggs, add 1⁄4 cup Parmesan and the cream, and stir and toss the mixture until the eggs just have begun to form moist curds, about 2 minutes. Add the crabmeat, chives and parsley and continue cooking and tossing until the eggs have formed more solid curds that cling to the farfalle, 1 to 2 minutes more. Serve immediately, passing grated Parmesan and black pepper for guests to add to taste.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICK Saint Patrick’s work as a Christian missionary incorporated some pagan beliefs to which many natives of Ireland had previously subscribed. He combined those beliefs with the Christian sacrament, and the Celtic cross traces its origins to this combination of pagan beliefs and Christianity.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Taking Your Dog for a Winter Hike DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love hiking with my Border Collie mix, “Jess.” Even in the dead of winter, we are out in the snow. Jess carries her own supplies in saddlebags sized just for her. The problem is, my girlfriend keeps saying it’s dangerous for Jess to be out with me in the wintertime. That she could get hypothermia, or injure her paws on jagged ice and have to be carried out. I really have never had a problem. What’s your take? -– Tim Y., Manchester, New Hampshire

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On March 15, 1968, construction starts on the north tunnel of the Eisenhower/ Johnson Memorial Tunnel on I-70 in Colorado west of Denver. TOP DOLLAR PAID $$ $$ FOR CARS & TRUCKS

DEAR TIM: Each dog is different, and a dog that is outdoors frequently can acclimate as the seasons change. It sounds like Jess is pretty well acclimated to the cold, and you probably keep a close eye on her while on the trail to make sure she’s not shivering or in distress. Hiking is an activity that keeps you both warm, even on snowy days. I do understand your girlfriend’s worries. Much bigger dogs than Jess have suffered hypothermia from spending just a few hours in the backyard, unsupervised. And that term, supervision, does make a difference. Assure your girlfriend that because Jess is with you on the trail, she is under your supervision at all times. If she does get chilly or injures a paw, you’ll know about it right away, and will make sure that Jess is safe and that she’s warm enough. Her saddlebags should carry food, a drinking bowl, a doggy sweater or emergency blanket, and a small first-aid kit to deal with scraped paws and splinters. My advice: Keep hiking and enjoy the time spent with Jess!

THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN PASSOVER AND EASTER To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance of Pesach, or Passover. During this time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.

“Woke” culture only have a simple solution: “Get Woke, Go Broke!” You have no idea what Freedom of Speech and Free Enterprise is all about. They teach misinformation in many educational institutions now. You all have your own brains to use; don’t be like fools following blindly to doomsville! Get the cobwebs out of your heads and start thinking for yourselves and stop listening to the media’s propaganda. You can never truly believe everything you hear. This is me exercising my Freedom of Speech, speech that comes from experience, not believing everything I hear or read. Social media is now more evil and hatefilled than it was originally designed to be. Stop it and start talking in person again. Teacher vacation There is no way teachers are doing their full jobs when schools are barely open. It’s not their fault; they did not close schools. However, the school budget should be drastically reduced along with school tax bills. Don’t worry In response to Let It Go: There is no law or ordinance restricting any type of flag or flags you can fly on your

personal property. The only restriction or rule is that the American flag is the higher flag on the pole. Therefore if we choose to fly a Trump flag it is our right as American citizens. Would you go to someone’s residence to complain they are flying a flag from [another country], which, by the way, are all over in [local town]. Why does this bother you? I am using my first amendment right. Flags To the person ranting about the Trump flags: Leave it alone. If people can still drive cars with Obama and Hillary stickers years after the fact, people can have their flags. Trump supporters can’t have a bumper sticker as the crazies try to run them off the road. Trump flags are on private property. Stop the cancel culture.
