The Apostles often missed it. They were so busy with what they were doing they failed to recognize the miracles going on around them. Mark 6:52 sums it up, “For they considered not the miracle of the loaves,” speaking of the feeding of the 5 thousand with only 5 loaves and 2 fish. The storm that arose (4:39) on the sea tried the faith of them also, when they forgot Jesus was asleep, out of sight but with them never the less. He calmed the sea and rebuked them for having little faith. He said “why are ye so fearful, how is it ye have no faith?” They “missed it” again. His presence is sufficient for your storm and your life. Is Jesus in your life? Are you missing what He is allowing or did you miss it?

MOMENTS IN TIME On May 2, 1972, after nearly five decades as director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover dies. By 1969 the media, the public and Congress had grown suspicious that the FBI might be abusing its authority. Congress passed laws requiring Senate confirmation of future FBI directors and limiting their tenure to 10 years. (The History Channel)

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS The Reader A 2017 survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that women read more than men. Women read an average of 19.8 minutes per day, which can make a Mother’s Day focused on Mom’s love of books an ideal and unique way to spend the day. Kids can write Mom their own books, and Dad can help put them together. Dads can visit rare bookstores and look for original copies of Mom’s favorite books that she might not find elsewhere.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace aging headlight bulbs? Few drivers include headlight bulb replacement in their vehicle maintenance routines. But old headlight bulbs can drastically compromise visibility at night, when drivers’ visual acuity is naturally reduced by as much as 70 percent. As headlight bulbs age, the effects of exposure to sunlight, ozone and pollution can significantly reduce their light output. According to Philips Automotive, a leading manufacturer of vehicle lighting components, headlight bulbs begin to project significantly less light within two to three years of their initial usage, producing dimmer light outputs that compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. For example, new headlight bulbs capable of projecting 240-foot beams in front of a vehicle may see that projection dwindle to just 160 feet within two to three years.

533-1396 MOTHER’S MOTHER S DA DAY AY
The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

S E V RA Earth Day thanks! For the past 10 years, Riga Recreation has participated in the Monroe County Park's Earth Day celebration by holding an annual Pick Up the Parks event at all Monroe County Parks. This year's initiative at Churchville Park was an overwhelming success with 58 community members volunteering their time to pick up trash and tree damage due to recent high winds. We even had two bins filled with pharmaceutical waste products brought in. Many thanks to the following organizations that participated this year: Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Waste management, Churchville Lions and LEO Clubs, Newman-Riga Library, Chili Soccer Assn. and students from Churchville and Chestnut Ridge Elementary Schools. Many thanks to all! - David Thomas, Recreational Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you! Thank you to Bob Thompson for organizing and running the 5th annual Take Pride in Hemlock Litter Pick Up. Additionally, we would like to thank all the volunteers who came out to assist in this yearly project. We had all kinds of volunteers from Livonia school's National Honor society to a local business owner to several residents as well as Little Lakes volunteers all pitching in to make a difference. This year, it was noticeable that there was much less garbage. We feel that the "Take Pride in Hemlock" is spreading through this hamlet year-round. Keep up the great work! Grateful! What an amazing outpouring of folks who came to the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock for the free trees, shrubs, and plants giveaway on April 23rd! (Perhaps 100+ came early.) A big thank you to Tawn Feeney for purchasing the seedlings and handing them out in celebration of Earth Day. A number of people who didn't receive the giveaway came inside the Center for the first time and learned about what is offered here for them. Even if we ran short on trees, we hope you'll come back and take part in our many other events and classes. Thank you to all community members for their support of our activities.

Shameful It is a shame that the ship named after the Sullivan’s war heroes is in the disarray that it is. I can’t understand how a ship of one of the most powerful nations in the world could be let go to the point of sinking at the Navel Yard. This is a slap in the face to all Veterans and moreover the heroes it was named after and the ones who served on this ship. I am a Vietnam Vet, and I am appalled that this could happen. It is bad enough that Veterans have to wait 40 years to get a disability rating when pushed out of the service. Someone should be [held accountable] for the way this ship has ended up. Forgetfulness It appears to me that many people have forgotten how production all over the world seemed to come to a halt because of the COVID pandemic. These shutdowns caused shortages in many products, and thus prices for those products rose. These people also seem to have forgotten the backup in the ports that prevented shipments from getting to the marketplace, which also helped to cause shortages. I believe most of our economic problems can be traced directly to COVID. Be patient. Things will get better, hopefully sooner rather than later. Sensitivity please! To the woman who saw my father’s work van at my house and called his employer to try to report him for “goofing off.” His employer is very aware of his whereabouts and the fact that, unlike someone like you who always has access to bathroom facilities and a kitchen, he may be entitled to a break. May your husband and children always be entitled to the same considerations. In addition, my dad had just completed a messy job around the block from you. (Yes, we know you called!) He was unable to clean himself up thoroughly afterwards, as you would have been able to do in a home or office building. So, a convenient quick stop at his daughter’s house to use her facilities allowed him to, among other things, make himself more presentable before his next call and get water to go. I hope that if your loved ones have blue collar jobs one day, you will have gained more sensitivity to these issues. I would have addressed you in person, but I am much too angry, and I want others to be aware, as well.

affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Connect You With Better Hearing
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Can Prilosec be Taken for More than 14 Days?
Get Experienced Care. Hearing test and consultation. Call today for details and your appointment.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s the story with Prilosec? Doctors routinely tell people with GERD or acid stomach to take this forever. Yet it clearly describes only a 14-day treatment on the box. A physician assistant told me that because of a rare infrequent condition some users have that the manufacturer is legally bound to post the 14-day limit, but that the general population can safely ignore it. Can you enlighten and reassure those of us whose physicians have said to take it long term? -- C.D.C. ANSWER: The patient instructions in the over-the-counter versions of proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole (Prilosec), do recommend a 14-day course. However, longer courses may indeed be prescribed by a licensed prescriber, such as a PA. Even so, there are relatively few people who need lifelong medication. Those who do may have a condition such as Barrett’s esophagus, in which PPIs -- the most potent medical treatment to suppress stomach acid -- are necessary. They not only relieve symptoms, they are also prescribed in hopes of reducing the risk of developing cancer of the esophagus. The data on this are still not clear. For people with acid reflux (also called gastroesophageal reflux disease), PPIs are usually not needed lifelong. However, it may still be reasonable to use these drugs long term if the prescriber feels the benefit outweighs the risk. There are several risks of long-term use of PPIs. Stomach acids are important in protecting against bacteria, and two kinds of bacterial infections are more common in PPI users. The first is in the colon, especially of Clostridium difficile, where PPI users are about 30% more likely to be infected and may do so even without the antibiotic use that is the most common risk factor for C. diff. The second is pneumonia, although the apparent association may not be as strong as formerly thought. Low stomach acid may decrease absorption of vitamins and minerals, especially magnesium, iron and vitamin B12. PPIs were thought to increase the risk of a rare tumor, gastric carcinoid, based on data from rats, and of colon cancer. Those risks have not been seen in humans. Early data suggest increased risk of kidney disease and dementia. That risk appears to be small, if it even exists. Long-term PPI use has some risk of side effects and should be used only when there are benefits to PPIs that can’t be obtained with other treatments, including other medications and lifestyle changes. This especially includes better diet, weight loss when appropriate and not eating right before bed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION? Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment. In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.

PAINTING/PAPERING CREATE DRAMA WITH BOLD PAINT COLORS Stick to boldness on interchangeable items. Those who like to experiment with color may find that they like to switch out the colors now and again. Instead of having to repaint every few months, use decorative items in bright shades to make swapping out color that much easier. For example, replace area rugs, throw pillows and draperies. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

Canandaigua Mom Vanessa Talks Motherhood & Supporting Fellow Moms BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
s many moms can attest, motherhood can be both a wonderful adventure and an incredible challenge. One of the most valuable assets a mother can have is a strong and caring support system. Vanessa Samuels, Canandaigua mom and manager of the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Canandaigua, shares some of her new mom realizations as well as how meaningful it is to be able to support other moms. Samuels and her husband moved to the Canandaigua/Ontario area in the fall of 2018. Samuels was expecting their first child, and the couple decided to move closer to her family. Their daughter, Jordyn, was born that winter. Much as it has been for many women, new motherhood was a revelation. “Holy cow! I just don’t feel like you can totally fathom how much work a mom actually does!” exclaimed Samuels. She says that although she has always had a wonderful relationship with her mom, she now appreciates all her mother’s hard work so much more. “[Motherhood] has given me a newfound appreciation of what moms do and go through,” Samuels explained. “How did my mom provide a meal for us every night, keep the house clean, and keep us all bathed?!” Perhaps, like many of us, you know the struggle all too well. As Samuels opines, there is so much no one ever tells you about becoming a mom. “I think you can never be prepared enough to be a mom,” she said. “There are many challenges involved in being a mother. I often found myself asking, ‘Why did no one tell me about this?’” One example Samuels gave came from her days breastfeeding. “I didn’t realize I had to consume more calories while breastfeeding, and my blood sugar dropped terribly. It was another mom who suggested to me that perhaps I should eat during the process. She put together a basket of snacks for me to place beside my nursing station.” The simple act deeply touched Samuels. “It was one of the more profound things that happened. I appreciated just recognizing the beautiful support and the desire to be a part of that in my community.” When Samuels realized she wanted to return to the workforce, this desire was still strong. Then, a friend directed her to the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Canandaigua. “I started at Care Net in October 2019,” she said. “I would say that a good number of the moms who come to see me visit because they may not have strong support elsewhere.” The opportunity to be a mom helping other moms was just what Samuels was hoping for. “It is such a beautiful thing,” she enthused. “Sometimes, moms come in because they just need a break. Many moms do not get breaks, and that can be especially true for stay-at-home moms. Helping other moms and moms-tobe is such a beautiful experience and not only for them. Providing that safe place, that sanctuary, for them is beautiful for me.” One of Samuels’ favorite ways to help other moms is by taking them to Care Net’s boutique to let Three-year-old Jordyn Samuels introduced mom, Vanessa Samuels, to motherhood!

them “shop” for clothing. “I feel we have great items in our boutique,” she said. If I wouldn’t let my kid wear an item, we don’t keep it. The clothing is quality, and the experience really is like going shopping!” Samuels also enjoys sharing Care Net’s pregnancy classes which can be attended virtually or in-person. “There are over 100 classes on all kinds of topics and answering all kinds of questions,” she explained. “I have also taken several of these classes, and it is fun to hear how other moms are applying what they have learned, as well. New content is always being added, and I believe anyone could benefit from them.” Care Net has given Samuels the opportunity to promote moms helping moms and to form a supportive, local mom community. The nonprofit offers several services, all free and confidential, which include pregnancy tests, pregnancy options and peer counseling, referrals, post-abortion counseling and education (PACE) and parenting classes, among others. COVID, however, saw Care Net meeting additional needs. “COVID was really hard for a lot of people,” observed Samuels. During the height of the pandemic, Care Net saw many moms opening up about domestic violence in their relationships. “We are not officially that service,” she said. “However, it was beautiful to see that these women trust us so much that they feel safe enough to share such a hard part of their lives. We were then able to connect them to the right agencies to get them out of those situations and to give them support.” At the same time, Care Net never stopped supporting them. “We never want to say to the moms that come to us, ‘Okay, we got you here; you’re good,’ and walk away,” said Samuels. “We are here for them starting from the first time they come in, often pregnant and unsure what to do. We work to make sure these moms truly have everything they need. When a mom or dad succeeds, their children succeed, creating generational change. That helps everyone.” When asked her feelings on motherhood thus far, Vanessa Samuels didn’t hesitate. “It is hard work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We will forever have these beautiful memories that we get to create as a family.”

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Surviving Inflation
Recent government figures outlined food price increases for one month. The numbers are grim. Fruits and vegetables went up 2.3%, the highest since 2010. Dairy went up 1.9%, the highest since 2011. Cereals and bakery items went up 1.1%. Averaged over the past 12 months, food prices have risen 8.6% (the highest increase since 1981), with poultry and fish climbing 13% and beef soaring 16%. Wow! We knew it was bad because each time we go to the grocery store, we’re spending more to get less. But to see the figures laid out in print just brings home how bad things have gotten. Bloomberg (www.bloomberg.com), whose economists we need to keep an eye on, predicts that this year we’ll pay an additional $5,200 for all household items (including gas, heating fuel and everything else) and services, which it calculates at $433 per month. We need to reconsider how we feel about food banks. We seniors generally don’t want to do that, saying, “Oh, others need it more.” Well, at this point, maybe we are those others? In a few days, I’ll be driving three of my senior neighbors to the food bank for the weekly pickup. It will be their first time, and they are nervous. But I made a scouting trip last week, parking across the street from the line of cars and walking over to talk to the person in charge. I was able to report back: No, they don’t take your name or ask questions (except maybe to ask if you’d prefer apple or orange juice). No, they’re not judgmental. No, it’s not leftover expired food, and the fruits and vegetables were fresh and lovely. The people were friendly and welcoming, happy to do what they were doing. Just go to the food bank. You won’t be judged. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Dog Bitten in Snout Keeps Licking Wound
DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Labor and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, registered nurse is the most common occupation for women in the United States labor force. Slightly less than 2.1 million women worked as registered nurses in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Such figures are harder to come by in regard to Canada, but Statista reports that the labor participation rate among women in Canada in 2018 was right around 64 percent. That rate marks a slight decrease from its 21st century peak in 2005, when 66.7 percent of women were active members of the Canadian workforce. In the United States, more than two million women worked as secretaries or administrative assistants in 2017, making these professions the second most common occupation among female workers. Elementary and middle school teachers was the third most common occupation for female professionals, employing more than 1.9 million women in 2017. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau also indicates that women have the lion’s share of jobs in an assortment of professions, including preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, childcare workers, and dental assistants. Women hold at least 92 percent of the jobs in each of those professions in the United States.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Jesse” was bitten on the face by another dog, injuring his snout and nose so badly that it required several stitches. I can’t get Jesse to stop licking and pawing at the wound, and now he’s tearing out the stitches. The wound looks infected. What should I do? -Kamo M. DEAR KAMO: Head straight back to the veterinarian to get the wound treated for infection and closed up again. This time, have Jesse fitted for a cone-shaped E-collar. It’s jokingly called the “cone of shame,” but is an important medical device for helping to heal just such an injury. Dogs really don’t like E-collars, and they can cause stress, but if he’s able to paw at the wound, it must be worn. You can take it off Jesse at mealtimes so he can access his food, but it must go right back on. There are a few other protective collars available that are more comfortable, like padded rings, but these may not stop the pawing. Jesse’s also licking his nose, which is understandable since it probably feels weird and swollen and itchy. This can be a problem area because dogs naturally lick their nose throughout the day. The vet may give you medicine to help it heal or may recommend an overthe-counter antibiotic ointment. Put the medicine on as directed. Help reduce the chance of infection by having clean, fresh water for Jesse to drink (to clean his tongue before licking his nose) and replacing any manky old dog toys (which have a lot of germs) with clean chew toys. Don’t let Jesse sniff at or eat nasty stuff (dogs love roadkill and other animals’ poo) until the wounds heal. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE WHILE SOCIAL DISTANCING Seek support from your community. The CDC recommends seeking support from faith-based organizations or other trusted community leaders and friends. While inperson church services may not be available, many local religious leaders have made themselves available to congregants and even non-congregants who may need help grieving. Local community organizations may have grief counselors available to help people cope with loss.

The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it. - Henry David Thoreau
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “If you add a teaspoon of sugar to your biscuit mix or to the dough for rolls, it will help them to brown well, and they will come out of the oven with golden tops.” -- J.R. in Michigan
Celebrate the memory of someone who has touched your life by publishing a memoriam in our passages section. Submit your precious memories online for print at www.gvpennysaver.com/submit_passages or call Lisa at 585-226-8111 with any questions.
* Two ways to save money on laundry expenses: First, spring and summer are an excellent time to get into line-drying clothes -- especially towels and jeans that take longer to dry thoroughly in a dryer. Then, clean out and shorten your dryer’s vent hose to make your machine more energy efficient. It cuts down on drying time, too, saving you time AND money.
585.226.8111 // lisagianni@gvpennysaver.com
* “Got an odd job coming up? Before you go out and purchase an expensive limited-use tool, check with friends and neighbors to see if you can borrow instead of buying. Check with local hardware stores to see if it’s cheaper to rent, too.” -- S.L. in Kentucky
COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE Recognize that everyone feels differently. Grief is expressed in many different ways. What one person experiences may not be the norm for another. You may go through a variety of emotions, from anger at the circumstances and being left without your loved one, to guilt if you believe there may have been something more you could have done to prolong your loved one’s life. Mourn in your own way, and afford others the same opportunity. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* “I have pets that leave hair and dirt on the couch. When I wash my cushion covers, one thing I always do is put them back on the pillows when they are not quite dry. They stretch better when they’re a little bit damp. I had a terrible time a few years ago when I let them dry all the way and couldn’t get them back on!” -- H.P. in Arizona * “To clean burned-on bits from your cast-iron skillet, scrub with a plastic scrubbie and salt as an abrasive. Dry immediately and rub with oil to keep moist.” -- R.T. in Ohio

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.
