PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

Landscaping is typically viewed as a chore by homeowners, many of who enjoy doing some work on their lawns and gardens. But only few homeowners may recognize the potential dangers of lawn maintenance. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that more than 230,000 people per year are treated for various injuries resulting from lawn and garden tools. Common injuries include loss of fingers, lacerations, broken and dislocated bones, eye injuries, and burns. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable if homeowners prioritize safety when tending to their lawns and gardens.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Install windows films. Plastic window films are another option for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their windows. Heat shrink film can be cut to fit each individual leaky window in a home and then attached to windows using double-sided tape. A hair dryer can then be used to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. Low-emissivity, or Low-E, coatings are a more expensive alternative to heat shrink film, and they can be equally effective at improving energy efficiency. Installation of Low-E coatings can be more difficult, as they do not provide as much leeway for mistakes during application as heat shrink film.

HELPING HEROES (NAPSI)—The Department of Defense reports that 1.3 million Americans serve in the military. If you or someone you care about is ever among them and sent overseas, you may be glad to learn about an organization that’s been assisting members of the U.S. armed forces, veterans and their families since the early 1900s: the American Red Cross. It provides emergency communication services, resiliency programs and morale activities.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
If Flea Collar Causes Reaction in Your Pet DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m worried by recent reports that a certain brand of flea collar has been making dogs sick, and many have died. I live in an area where fleas and ticks are rampant, and flea collars are essential for my two pups. What can I do if they have a reaction to a new collar? -- Jane in South Carolina DEAR JANE: It’s understandable that you’re worried. At the moment, the issues with the flea collar in question, Seresto, are being reviewed by the EPA, and no recall or warning has been issued. Flea collars are widely available from different manufacturers. They’re a popular choice because of the ease of use and affordability. However, any of them can cause side effects, and it’s important to monitor your pet for them. A common one is a skin reaction directly underneath the collar shortly after it’s put on for the first time. Your dog may scratch at the area; you may see reddening of the skin. Some reactions include hair loss around the collar. The itching is usually temporary. Consult your pet’s veterinarian if you see redness or hair loss, if the scratching and whining continues, or if your dog shows other signs of distress. If your pet is lethargic, drooling, vomiting or behaving strangely right after a new collar is put on, contact the vet immediately; it likely needs emergency treatment. To prevent these and other side effects, make sure to purchase the correct collar for your dog’s size and age. Putting a collar designed for a 100-pound dog onto a 15-pound dog can cause dangerous side effects because a small dog’s body just can’t process that much flea treatment. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.
“We are committed to delivering critical services with a caring touch wherever and whenever they’re needed—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year—for military members and their families at home and around the world,” said Koby Langley, senior vice president for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross.

Shop Smart for Mother’s Day Check expiration dates. Gift certificates and cards for particular stores or services are popular come Mother’s Day. But it is essential to check expiration dates on the certificates or find gifts, as there is a good chance Mom will put off pampering herself and you would not want the gift to expire before she has a chance to use it.

When you think of local flavors in your hometown and in the Greater Rochester Area, what comes to mind? You may think of Rochester’s iconic garbage plate, Zweigle’s red or white hots, Boss Sauce, Guglielmo’s marinara sauce or one of the region’s internationally recognized Rieslings. But did you ever wonder what makes locally grown products taste so delicious? The answer may be right under your feet! New York’s top 10 agricultural products include milk, beef, apples, cabbage, sweet corn, potatoes, and tomatoes: ingredients that find their way into many of our local dishes. Rochester and the Finger Lakes are also home to several wineries, cideries and breweries, many of which source their ingredients locally, giving their products a wonderful, unique taste.
unique flavor of Parmesan cheese. Locally grown produce is fresher and offers better tasting, ripe varieties.” He continues: “The amount of water a field receives during the growing season also makes a difference. Too much or too little influences flavor. I imagine the crazy weather patterns we have been experiencing over the last several years have impacted flavor in some manner.”
According to experts, the chemical and biological makeup of soil and environment literally changes the flavor of what is grown there. This means that the vine-ripe tomatoes you select at your local farmers market will vary significantly from the tomatoes you may purchase at the supermarket which are typically shipped from elsewhere and harvested before they are fully ripe. Unfortunately, this often sacrifices flavor for appearance. “Harvesting produce when it is ‘vine-ripe’ is essential,” says Robert G. Hadad of Monroe County Cornell Cooperative Extension, adding that produce which matures naturally and fully yields the most ideal flavors.
Authentic Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes Region flavors seep their way into every succulent bite and satisfying sip offered by area growers. When chefs, winemakers, and brewers use locally grown produce, they are inviting us to taste the uniqueness of our own hometowns. Don’t forget to shop your local farmers markets, farm stands, and other local product vendors to experience your authentic, area flavors!
“Soil and water are probably the biggest factors that can affect flavor,” explains Hadad. “Flavor can be affected by cover crops and compost, as well. Soil has a diverse mineral and biochemical environment, and these complex combinations can create differences.”
“That is why grapes have been grown along the Niagara ° µ ¾ À À limestone escarpment for generations,” Hadad adds. “It ¾ É Ì Ñ Ò is also claimed that in Parma, Italy, the soil affects the Ì Ñ ÒÓ À pasture meadows, and this is what contributes to the

FUN FACTS ABOUT
DONUTS
10 billion donuts are served each year in the U.S. alone.
The largest donut ever made was 16 inches high, 16 feet wide, and weighed 1.7 tons.
29 donuts in 6 minutes – that’s the Guinness World Record for donut eating held by John Haight.
Why have a hole? Although the hole makes donuts very convenient for holding, the real reason is becauseafter changing ingredients to original donut recipes, the centers were not cooking through. A ring shape allowed the whole donut to cook more evenly. https://holelottadoughnuts.com/doughnuts-blog/funfacts-for-kids-about-donuts/

By JoAnn Derson * My family’s spring-cleaning checklist is in full effect. Some people dread seasonal chores, but I relish the sense of accomplishment that comes from a job well done. With the right planning, and some helpful tips, spring cleaning can be a breeze. Here are some of the best we have to share. -- JoAnn
In the Bible’s book of Job Chapter 21 there is a picture of prosperous men and their attitudes toward God. They have money to give them independence to buy things above their basic need. They have a home to live in and meat on their tables. They are in good health and have healthy children. Yet in their prosperity, they take all of these blessings for granted. They are well cared for and what we would call prosperous. “Therefore, thy say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.” (Job 21:14) Oftentimes these prosperous men belong to charitable groups. They may give money to noble causes; but when the decision of life must be made between their Own Will and God’s Will, “they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of they ways.” Prosperous men often forget how fragile their human flesh is and how temporary human life can be. They fail to realize when “they say unto God, Depart from us,” that God has the last word. “They spend their days in wealth and in a moment go down to the grave.” (Job 21:13). They did not understand that when they said unto God, “Depart from us,” they would stand before HIM in the nakedness of their pride. “Then shall he say also unto them… Depart from me, ye cursed, Into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41). Could this prosperous man be you? It won’t be if you are willing to repent of your sin and receive Jesus Christ as your persoanl Savior. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

* “Stainless steel appliances are very popular, and in the kitchen, they get plenty of chances to get fingerprinted up. My appliance guy recommended using a lightmist, wax-based aerosol dusting spray once or twice a week to keep my stainless steel appliance fronts looking their best.” -- R.C. in North Carolina * In the closet, we all want to pare away unused items, but sometimes it seems like you wear clothes that you don’t. Turn all the clothes hangers the opposite way (facing out instead of in). When you use an item and it is returned to the closet, replace the hanger normally. In a few months, if an item has not been worn, it will be apparent. If it’s not likely to be worn, it should go. * Spring is a wonderful time to clean the walls inside your house. It clears away hidden dust and really freshens up a room. Clean painted walls by dusting them first with a dry mop, then washing with a rag dampened in water. If you need a little extra oomph -- say, in the kitchen or bath -- add a couple drops of mild dish soap.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Lessons for All of Us I have a new friend. When she bangs on my door, on a daily basis now, it’s clear that she wants to come in and visit. So, being a good neighbor, I open the door and in she trots. She now knows where the kitchen is and that I’ve laid in a supply of her favorite foods. She heads there, leading the way, talking a mile a minute. Stuffed after she eats, she’ll sprawl on the couch and have a long nap, safe from the world. My new friend is a cat -- a grey tabby, age 4, with a tiny bell on her red collar. This cat, whose name I’m told is Missy, is an orphan, at least right now. Her owner, a neighbor, is in the hospital and the prognosis is grim. The woman was found a few weeks ago when another neighbor noticed that Missy was still sitting on the porch in the middle of the afternoon, apparently unfed and upset. The neighbor investigated and found Missy’s owner on the floor. An ambulance was called. Let this be a lesson to all of us. If we have pets and we live alone, we need a backup plan for the animals’ care. Someone needs to know we have pets, know what they eat and where the food is kept. If it’s an older animal and medicine is required, somebody needs to know how to give it, and when. This someone needs to know the name of the vet. The second lesson is about us: Somebody needs to be aware enough of our daily routines that if something is wrong, they’ll know to investigate: the blinds still closed, the paper still at the door ... or the cat still sitting unfed on the porch. Me, too It seems like a lot of our officials are being acussed on sexual harassment charges, and it seems to be okay for them to stay in office with no pressure or consequences.
S E V RA Kudos for Arts Grant & Volunteers Thank you to Pammi, Marchia, Doug, Marty, Diana, Joanne and all of the volunteers from the Mt. Morris Senior Nutrition Site who, along with the Livingston County Office for the Aging, applied for an arts grant and provided over 700 at-home arts and crafts kits for nearly 100 older adults who have been staying home during the pandemic! Over forty different crafts were offered at intervals over the past year. Recipients so appreciated the kits and said they kept them busy, gave them a sense of accomplishment, and reduced boredom. The program was made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts. - Grateful Crafters and Artists
Schedules to keep If you're driving along and "lolly gagging" or "sight seeing," or just plain scared due to road conditions, whatever they are, if there is a bus of any kind behind you, by all means move over and let us by please! We are on a schedule, and your driving habits are hindering us. You are a road hazard, and busses are really too big to try to pass you as busses don’t have the "get up and go" cars have. We are forced to follow and then run late. Forms of bullying Bullying takes many forms. It has no age limit but should become extinct. Politicians use bullying a lot, and it is not limited to one political party. Bullying is also another word for harassment, making a person feel less than just because they disagree with someone else's choice. With every action, there will be a reaction; that is just a part of life. Every choice a person makes has benefits and consequences. The government has no right to take away choices. Just because a person's choice is different than another person's choice, doesn't mean it isn't as important. It is just different. Is there still freedom of choice? Should all choice be eliminated? Some say yes.

RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority. 1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated. 3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself.
Magic Maze ONE-WORD MUSICALS
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
No Miracle Supplement Can Cure Heart Disease ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I ran across a recent article of yours about carotid artery stenosis. In this article you state that “there is no miracle food, drink or supplement that can clear out arteries.” This is actually not true. I’d like to point out Dr. Dean Ornish’s work as well as Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn’s work on heart disease. Both doctors showed regression in coronary plaques in their patients who followed a whole food plant-based diet. One young patient who suffered a heart attack even saw complete reversal in his coronary artery blockage on a whole food plant-based diet. I’d encourage you to check out their studies and books if you haven’t done so already. Their work is very encouraging and shows that we do not have to succumb to heart disease. -- K.G. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing to give me a chance to make my point a little more clearly. I do want to emphasize that the patient was asking specifically about YouTube videos for “food, drinks and diet regimens that clear arteries.” I have seen some of these, which say, for example, all you need is a cup a day of lemon juice and turmeric to clear your arteries. There are healthcare professionals in the media who tout simple cures to reverse heart disease. These are what I refer to when I say there are no miracle cures. That is not what you are referring to in the work of Drs. Ornish and Esselstyn. Theirs was a significant lifestyle intervention, not a miracle supplement. Dr. Esselstyn did a small, uncontrolled observational study; Dr. Ornish did a small controlled study. In the Esselstyn study, the diet was quite restrictive: “Initially the intervention avoided all added oils and processed foods that contain oils, fish, meat, fowl, dairy products, avocado, nuts and excess salt. Patients were also asked to avoid sugary foods (sucrose, fructose and drinks containing them, refined carbohydrates, fruit juices, syrups, and molasses). Subsequently, we also excluded caffeine and fructose.” The Ornish study had a similar completely vegetarian diet, but 10% of calories from fat was allowed. In addition, there was (as there was not in Esselstyn) mandatory stress reduction time, and all smokers in the study quit. This study’s results, proven by angiography, showed reversal in coronary blockages by 3% in five years, compared with 12% worsening in the control group in the same time. Esselstyn analyzed the study by those judged adherent and nonadherent. For any subject who was judged nonadherent, 62% had coronary events. Less than 1% of adherent subjects experienced an adverse event. Together, these studies show that in a group of extraordinarily motivated study subjects, coronary lesions can undergo regression with a multi-interventional approach including profound diet changes and sometimes other lifestyle interventions. These aren’t miracle diets. It’s an entire dramatic change in lifestyle. Extreme lifestyle changes are not necessary to show benefit. In the PREDIMED study, a Mediterranean-style diet was recommended, with high amounts of fruits, vegetables, legumes, olive oil and nuts, with less red and processed meat, less commercial baked goods and spread fats, and less soft drinks. Those who were recommended this diet had fewer heart attacks, strokes and death than those who were in the control group and were recommended a low-fat diet. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE: GET GIVING RIGHT Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.
