Hi! My name is
MaryJane.
I’m an 11 year old Tug (Terrier & Pug) rescue pup! Here I am having my first driving lesson, I love to go in the car! As soon as I get a dress on I know it’s time for a road trip. I used to visit folks in the nursing home, showing them my tricks. I can shake, high 5, dance and for a blackberry (my favorite treat) I’ll spin around on 2 feet! I’m retired now and spend my days napping, watching tv, barking at anything that moves and eating popcorn.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
The Gospel Corner Thinking Our Way To Success If you think you’re beaten, you are. If you think you dare not try, you won’t. If you would like to win, but think you can’t, it is almost certain you won’t. If you believe you will lose, then more than likely you’ve lost. If you think you’re outclassed, you are. Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man. The person who wins is the one who believes he can. How do you handle the pressure of everyday living? There is only one way to be successful. The Bible says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Phil 4:13. When we think the way God thinks, we will be a success. If you want to be a success, begin with Jesus. Then you will achieve true success.

THE HISTORY OF BOUTONNIÈRES Men wear boutonnières on special occasions, including weddings, religious ceremonies and prom night. At weddings, the groom and his groomsmen typically boutonnières. But some historians believe men have not always worn flowers strictly on special occasions. Some believe the modern-day boutonnière traces its lineage to sporting events in ancient civilizations, including Egypt. During those times, men might have worn certain colored flowers as a show of support for particular participants in sporting events, not unlike how many modern sports fans wear team shirts, jerseys and other attire to display their support for their favorite teams. But according to GentlemansGazette.com, the boutonnières of today likely started appearing just a few centuries ago. A 1771 painting of British Captain William Wade by the artist Thomas Gainsborough depicted Wade wearing a bouquet of flowers in his top buttonhole. And in the 19th century, men’s fashion included coats that folded over the top, revealing the inside of the buttonhole. Boutonnières provided an aesthetically appealing way to cover up that buttonhole.
DID YOU KNOW? Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural. HOME SERVICES
Roll ‘em out!
Save money and stay cool as temperatures rise Excessive energy bills can be a concern in spring and summer, just as much as they are in the winter. So how can you save money while keeping your home cool? The solution is simple: Top up your attic insulation. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary over the warmer months. Most attics are insulated, but oftentimes the amount of insulation present is inadequate - especially in older homes. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay a fireand moisture-resistant batt insulation, like Roxul Comfortbatt, on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first layer. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists; cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather-stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. When a house is insulated properly, energy savings can add up over time. Remember, insulation starts working the moment it is installed and can last for the life of the building.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The first person to be charged with driving too fast was Walter Arnold, of the English village Paddock Wood in Kent. On Jan. 28, 1896, he clocked in at four times the speed limit in his Benz -- or a whopping 8 mph. A constable chased him down on a bicycle and issued Arnold a ticket. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

BUILDING PERMITS PROTECT HOMEOWNERS As inspectors go through their checklists, they may notice things that were done incorrectly and will offer advice about how to mend the problem before it becomes a larger headache. If left unchecked, an electrical error could lead to a fire or another dangerous situation. Repairs that are not structurally sound may pose problems or deteriorate more quickly than structures that are constructed correctly. Furthermore, catching improper technique early on eliminates having to tear down and redo work, which can be a costly and time-consuming endeavor. Page 6

TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH
REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS
Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.
Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions.

Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden.

Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system.

You have to fight against being an antique. ~Burt Lancaster Leaving An Estate To Charity One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed. When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes. Page 14

In particular, look for worn insulation and splices on the cord and loose or exposed parts on the plug.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
The Trading Post
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Gift auctions are a fun way to raise money for good causes. * Get started by selling entry to the event and prize tickets. Some organizations prefer to sell entry packages to participants. This may include an entrance fee to the event as well as a number of tickets that can be used at the auction. Naturally, more tickets will be available for sale at the night of the event. Advertise the gift auction well in advance to generate interest. Mention a few of the big-ticket prizes in any advertisements to increase interest.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Cart courtesy Is this a new trend? The last few time I’ve been to the grocery store I see people parking their cart at the end of an aisle (or worse yet in the middle) while they walk away to shop down the aisle. I don’t really get how this is an advantage to them but it certainly is an inconvenience to the rest of us. I don’t feel comfortable touching and moving your things, but I’m not happy waiting for the traffic jam to clear either, so please take your cart with you.
S E V RA Mom, you rock! To my mom and best friend, thank you for giving me the best gifts of all: love, trust and friendship. You rock! Love, Christine You're one great Mom! Thanks for always being there, Mom. We are who we are today (successful, crazy, beautiful, and great moms in our right) thanks to all you taught us. You have our eternal love and gratitude - Squirrel and Moose. To My #1! Mom, every day I wonder how I was blessed with you as mine. You’re the one I aspire to be for my kids. Love you and thank you for everything! -Carmen
Garbage in the fields Anyone traveling on Volunteer Road near Rt 20A in Geneseo has the joy of seeing all the trash blown into the fields on the east side of Walmart. If all this trash were blowing down Main Street in Geneseo you know something would be done about it. Local officials do not seem to want to do anything about this; most of them do not even return my phone calls. Where is the public outcry? Where are the environmentalists? This plastic trash will remain in the fields for years to come and the farmer who works these fields could face issues with the trash getting caught in the equipment. Let’s get someone in office who will enforce our local laws. Shame on local officials for not addressing this ongoing problem. - G.G. Update Campaign Signs I wish all those Trump 2020 signs were replaced with Trump 2024. That election is over. You can see how our country is going since the new year started. I’d be happy to see more Trump signs for 2024.
You're a blessing, Mom! Thank you, Mom, for being such a patient teacher, Godly example, great listener, and most of all, for loving me so much! I love you! - Amanda Congrats, COVID vaccinators! For far too long, it was (and still is) a very scary situation with the threat of COVID. Hoping and praying for a vaccine that was on its way and would work was our reality. We now have at least 3 solutions, and yet some people feel that they don't need a vaccine. How quickly our minds change once the threat of extinction eases. Cheers to all who have gotten vaccinated or are about to. That's how we'll get our lives back!

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 18, 1917, six weeks after the United States formally entered World War I, Congress passes the Selective Service Act, giving the president the power to draft soldiers. Of the almost 4.8 million Americans who served in the war, some 2.8 million were drafted. * On May 20, 1506, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus dies in Spain. Columbus, and most others, underestimated the world’s size, calculating that East Asia must lie about where North America sits on the globe. * On May 24, 1844, before members of Congress, American inventor Samuel F.B. Morse dispatches a telegraph message from the U.S. Capitol to a railroad station in Baltimore. The message -- “What Hath God Wrought?” -- was telegraphed back to the Capitol a moment later. SPRING CLEANING TIPS TO DETOX YOUR BODY Spring is here, and if your thoughts turn to spring cleaning your house or office, don’t stop there. Take the opportunity to spring clean your body, too. Variations on the process of body detoxification have been elements of many traditional health prac tic es, including ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Consult your health care provider before starting a body detox regimen, but data suggest that most individuals w ithout chronic medical conditions can undergo a simple detox, and the simplest of plans is this: Drink more w ater. Consistently drinking w ater each day c an help rid your body of toxins even if you do nothing else. Data suggest that many American adults don’t drink enough w ater, although it is essential for maximum health. Water is a key element of any body detox plan. May is Better Hearing Month
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
There’s No Such Thing as ‘Cure’ for Autism ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend took her autistic son to a clinic in Mexico where he was fed a bleach solution that was supposed to cure his autism, but instead it made him very sick. He was deeply distressed and regressed in his behavior, and there was nothing my friend could do because in Mexico these kinds of clinics are allowed to operate with impunity. Isn’t there some way to stop this kind of thing? -- P.P.L. ANSWER: Before I get into why this story makes me both sad and angry, I want to address autism. Autism is an increasingly diagnosed condition that includes difficulty with social interactions, stereotyped repetitive movements and delayed language skills, although there is a subset of people with autism with no language delay. It’s absolutely critical to recognize that autism is a spectrum condition, ranging from people with profound disabilities to those who are so mildly affected that the diagnosis is very subtle. Correct diagnosis is complicated, even for an expert. Intellectual abilities in autism range from severe cognitive impairment to far abovenormal intelligence. As such, the proper medical care of a person with autism depends on his or her unique situation. Although most people on the autism spectrum need some extra empathy and understanding in order to have the best possible life, people with autism do not need to be “cured.” There is no “cure” for autism, so when you hear a professed “cure,” you should be deeply suspicious. In the case of the bleach solution, it is sadly not just in Mexico where this happens. The Food and Drug Administration had to warn consumers against the use of a product called “miracle mineral solution,” “chlorine dioxide” and other names. It is hard for me to believe the FDA has to warn people not to drink (or make your child drink) a powerful bleaching agent, but there are increasing reports of its use. It causes damage to the intestines, as you correctly note, but may also cause liver failure, nausea and vomiting, and dehydration. There is no evidence that this “treatment” is effective for any condition, even though it is marketed for cancer and HIV as well as autism. This is what makes me angry: I cannot imagine a crime much worse than profiting off of a treatment known to be both dangerous and ineffective. What makes me sad is that I can empathize with parents who have a child with autism who want their child to be more like other children, more “normal.” It takes time to come to grips with the fact that your child is not like others, but that he or she is a unique person who should be loved and accepted for who he or she is. That means finding creative ways to really help your child. There is a wide range of appropriate treatments for people with autism, preferably considered as early as possible, which is why it is so important to make the correct diagnosis quickly in a child with autism.
Quality care in a warm, friendly Environment.

* Fasten buttons, zippers and other closures before laundering a garment. This is especially important for any item that includes a hook-and-loop closure. The hooks will catch on other garments, and best case will be filled with lint. Worst case: They can tear at the threads of other items of clothing. * If you have a bunch of your family’s historical documents, make sure you scan them and preserve them for future generations. It’s always nice to forward copies to relatives -- you never know when someone will get involved in genealogy and really want to see those birth records, baptism certificates and baby photos. * You can sharpen knitting needles with a pencil sharpener. You also can use an emery board. Sharp needles work best! * “If you have two pairs of similar slacks -- one navy and one black -- you can put a safety pin through the tag on one of them so you can tell them apart. I have a pin in the navy slacks. They really do look similar until you’re out in the light.” -- T.L. in Virginia * Make chopping walnuts easier: Put some in a bowl, and nest another bowl into it, then rock the top bowl back and forth to crush the walnuts.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Owner: My Dog’s Poop Not My Responsibility DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I see no reason to pick up my dog’s poop, and I’m tired of being told that it’s my responsibility. I’m a taxpayer, and part of those taxes go toward cleaning the streets. If my dog poops on the curb or the sidewalk, the city should clean it up. That’s what I pay for. I also don’t see why my neighbor gets so upset when my dog poops on her front lawn. It’s all fertilizer. It’s time for big government to do its job and stop making us pick up after our dogs. -- Bill in Burlington DEAR BILL: Well, that’s a poopy attitude. Here’s the simple fact: You are responsible for your dog. Not the city, not your neighbor. Where your dog’s actions impact other people, animals or the environment, it’s your responsibility to minimize or prevent that impact. Dog poop left on the sidewalk, curb or street eventually breaks down, right? Wrong. It gets stepped on by other animals or people, who track fecal bacteria all over the place. It washes into the wastewater system and introduces new bacteria into natural waterways, sickening wildlife. The neighbor’s yard is a no-go zone because it’s their yard, plain and simple. Dog poop or urine can discolor or even burn their grass. Your dog is trespassing. And if you think that letting your dog poop in a park is OK, think again. Would you want a little kid running barefoot in the park to step in that poop? All those problems are minimized when you take along a little baggie (preferably a compostable one), pick up that poop and dispose of it properly. There’s no need to debate this. Pick it up. Send your comments, questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles What Will We Do With Our Time? What did we really accomplish this past year? We’ve had time, certainly, with all these lockdown days, weeks and months, to do any number of things. After reviewing my year of COVID, I realize that I could have done so much more, had I only known just how long “flattening the curve” was actually going to take. By my calculations, I could have accomplished the following: • Painted every room of the house three times. Yet here I sit with color swatches still taped to the wall where I put them last spring when I thought that interior painting would be a good summer project. • Written 1.25 novels, judging by how long it took to produce the others I never started. Too many other things to do, too many fun events coming up, I thought. Had I known just how much free, quiet and solitary time there was going to be, I would have started on Day One. • Become fluent in French with Duolingo free online lessons. I misjudged the coronavirus, seriously misjudged just how long it would be with us. I was certain that it would be gone by June. Then by September. And here we are, 15 months later, still wearing masks and staying home. I’m determined not to let another year go by with so little to show for it. I’ve picked an interior paint color. Now I’ll order the paint and go collect it curbside at the hardware store. The first file of a new novel is ready, with “Chapter 1” and a first paragraph. It’s a start. My Duolingo account is still there, holding my place where I left off long ago. It’s possible that in a year, we’ll be right where we are now. What will you do with the time?
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Hesitant to Get a COVID Vaccine? Consider these 5 Vax Facts! BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
“Should I get a COVID vaccine?”
t is a question that everyone seems to be asking themselves these days. We understand that health care is deeply personal (Hello, HIPAA laws!). At the same time, we would like to help our readers make the most informed decisions they can with the most up-to-date information available. We hope this most current information (pulled from the CDC, Yale Health [Yale University], and John Hopkins Medicine [The Johns Hopkins University]) will be helpful as you navigate this new pandemic landscape. As always, consult your health care provider before making any medical decisions, including those related to COVID vaccines. Vaccination protection reduces COVID-19 deaths. Getting vaccinated severely reduces the likelihood that you will contract COVID-19, and even if you do, it greatly reduces the likelihood of severe infection, hospitalization, and death due to COVID-19. According to the CDC, given that the effects of COVID-19 can be so severe, whether to the person who contracted the virus or to those with whom that person comes into contact, the benefits of avoiding infection, or at least lessening it to a great extent far outweigh the “known and potential risks” of the vaccines. While it is true the science studying the effects of COVID-19 vaccinations is young, it does not follow that that science is inaccurate. In fact, as studies continue, the evidence shows that not only are all of the currently authorized vaccines very good at preventing the severe COVID-19 cases, but also that “fully vaccinated people are less likely to be infected without showing any symptoms,” which should reduce the spread of infection. Vaccines create and maintain immunity. Many people are under the impression that if they have already contracted COVID-19, they are immune from future coronavirus infection and do not need a COVID-19 vaccination. However, we just don’t know. Because the virus is new, the CDC finds the length and strength of immunity from infection to be unknown. Furthermore, adds Yale Health, “it’s not known what antibody levels are needed to protect against reinfection.” The most up-to-date information suggests that, “reinfection with the virus that causes COVID-19 is uncommon in the months after initial infection but may increase with time.” In other words, post-coronavirus immunity may weaken, leaving one susceptible to infection. The need to vaccinate for COVID-19 may be similar to the need to vaccinate for the flu: regular and reoccurring to prevent sickness or at least reduce the severity of infection. It should also be noted that one cannot get sick with COVID-19 from a vaccine. “None of the COVID-19 vaccines contain the live virus that causes COVID-19, so a COVID-19 vaccine cannot make you sick with COVID-19,” states the CDC. Johns Hopkins concurs. In fact, this is common among many vaccines. A “dead” sample of the offending virus or disease is introduced into the body. The body, recognizing an intruder, designs and manufactures antibodies to fight it. Should your body ever be introduced to a “live” sample of that same intruder in the future, it is armed and prepared to destroy it. COVID-19 vaccines have been well tested. It has been suggested that since COVID-19 vaccines have received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA), they have not been soundly tested. The CDC insists that it did not skip necessary steps, but rather, that all “routine processes and procedures remain[ed] in place to ensure the safety of any vaccine.” This includes careful testing and continuous monitoring for problems and side effects. None of the original vaccine trials, which have fully independent safety monitoring boards, have reported any serious safety concerns. While the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was temporarily paused on April 13th to investigate a small number (6) reports, the CDC and the FDA announced that this vaccine could resume on April 23rd. The CDC has further determined that people with common allergies “can safely receive the COVID-19 vaccine,” unless the person who

is allergic to specific ingredients within the vaccine itself. Clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines did not include pregnant women, women who were breastfeeding, or children under 12. However, according to Yale Health, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) does not recommend withholding the COVID-19 vaccine from pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Also, “early data demonstrated a robust secretion of protective antibodies in the breastmilk of people vaccinated with the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.” As always, talk with your health care provider before being vaccinated. Quick vaccine development is a good thing. Speed can sometimes be misunderstood as carelessness, but nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to COVID-19 vaccines. In fact, several incredible scientific and technological advancements as well as unprecedented funding, resources, and focus have sped vaccine research and creation efforts like never before. For example, vaccine creation technologies have been in development for years prior to COVID-19. One of these technological marvels, messenger RNA (mRNA), “allows a faster approach than the traditional way vaccines are made,” states Johns Hopkins Medicine. Another time-saving factor was widespread cooperation and information sharing. Social media allowed companies to reach out to the many potential study volunteers which the widespread and highly contagious coronavirus had created. People were eager to help, and these people, as well as many countries, shared information to speed along the vaccine development processes. Finally, vaccine developers conducted some testing stages simultaneously and began manufacturing vaccine supplies in anticipation of approval, all funded in advance by governments recognizing the need for a speedy solution. Vaccine side effects are typically short lived or nonexistent. It should be noted that while some people do not experience any side effects, others do, so everyone should prepare for them accordingly. The CDC states that common side effects on the arm where one gets one’s shot may include pain, redness, and swelling. The rest of one’s body may experience tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever, and nausea. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that, if you have had COVID-19 already, the first shot may result in more noticeable side effects; whereas, if you have not had COVID-19, the second shot might result in more noticeable side effects. Be sure to consult your doctor before receiving a COVID-19 vaccine and if you experience vaccination side effects. Love to write? You could earn $25! WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
Please forward your resume to

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY When adopting more eco-friendly lifestyles, it can be easy for men and women to overlook their offices. While drivers can drive in ways that conserve fuel and homeowners can take steps to reduce their energy consumption at home, few people may give as much thought to making their offices more friendly to the environment. But there are many environmentally friendly practices that business owners and their employees can adopt around the office.
WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the average worker spent 26 minutes traveling to work, the most recent year for which the USCB has data. That marks a nearly 20 percent increase in average commute time since 1980. Things aren’t much better in Canada, where the National Household Survey found that the average commuter spends just over 25 minutes traveling to work each day. People who commute via public transportation can use the time they spend going to and from the office to answer emails, review schedules or even work on projects. Commuters who drive themselves to work can consider switching to public transportation or, if possible, move closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in their vehicles, where they have no choice but to be unproductive.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 17, 1965, after a two-year investigation, the FBI declares the supposedly pornographic lyrics of “Louie Louie” to be officially unintelligible. * On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens, a volcanic peak in southwestern Washington, violently erupts. The massive blast killed 57 people and leveled nearly all vegetation as far as 12 miles away. * On May 19, 1997, a 3-year-old boy dies of avian influenza in Hong Kong. Before the outbreak was controlled, six people were dead and 1.6 million domestic fowl were destroyed. The virus mutated and caused 62 more human deaths in Asia by 2005.
The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. Learn More: For further facts and to see a menu and a map of the nearest location, go to www.churchs.com.
