EXPLORING SOLAR ELECTRICITY Solar electricity is generated through a process known as the photovoltaic affect. Sunlight shines on solar panels, which are mounted on the roof of the home or in another prominent location. Each panel typically has between 60 to 72 solar cells strung together. These photovoltaic cells use the irradiation in sunlight to stimulate the flow of electrons in the semiconductor material, which creates direct current, or DC, electricity. Systems that directly convert the DC to alternating current, or AC, the type of power voltage used in a house, do so by way of an inverter. The inverter feeds power to the circuit board.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Are you one of those folks who paces while talking on the phone? Psychologists believe this may be a kind of coping mechanism to make up for lack of body language and nonverbal cues that normally accompany conversation. DID YOU KNOW?
Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well. Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.
PAINTING/PAPERING Consider local weather patterns and forecasts when planning an exterior painting project. Choose a time of year when there is little rain and low humidity. Keep in mind that the paint will require a couple of days to dry completely and cure, and that can be difficult in damp weather.

DID YOU KNOW? Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars. Page 9

Gardeners Are there plants that help with mosquitos? Make your garden work for you in the quest to combat mosquitoes by planting varieties that naturally deter them. Options abound for mosquito-repelling plants, although there’s minimal research to prove they actually work reliably. Thus, you may need to experiment with several to see what might work for you. Popular choices include mint, lemon balm, marigolds, basil, chrysanthemums, eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, lemongrass, catnip, peppermint, sage, and more. Another strategy is to spread cedar mulch throughout the garden. It offers double benefits by deterring
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County mosquitoes with its scent and soaks up and retains moisture in the soil. Why are my Cherry tree branches dying? It most likely has Black Knot disease. Black Knot is a disfiguring and potentially lethal disease of trees and shrubs in the genus Prunus. This genus includes stone fruits such as wild, fruit-bearing and ornamental plums and cherries. The disease is present only in the woody parts of trees, occurring most frequently on twigs and branches and sometimes on trunks and scaffold limbs. The warty swellings first become visible in late summer or the following spring
on new shoots. At first the knots are somewhat greenish and corky, but with age they become black and hard. When they occur on twigs and small branches, prune out the infected branches about 4 inches below the knot. On large branches and trunks, the knots can be cut out. This is done most successfully during August when the fungus does not extend far beyond the visible swelling. Be sure to remove any infected branches in the winter if black knot returns after August. Remove the diseased wood and about 1 inch of clean wood around the knot. It is best to remove knots before growth begins in the spring and to take them away from the orchard, as they will continue to produce spores for several weeks after re-
moval. Be sure to destroy infected tissue to limit spread of spores. Unfortunately, this disease is hard to control and might require the replacement with a tree not in that family or susceptible to Black Knot.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Prepare to Age in Place? Been There, Done That I read an article the other day encouraging seniors to make plans to age in place. Aging in place means to stay in our own homes as we get older so we can maintain our independence. Planning for it means making whatever changes are necessary to ensure that our homes are safe. Planning also can include surrounding ourselves with a network of people and services for support. My first thought was ... that’s what we’ve been doing for the past two years, and we certainly didn’t have time to plan for it before COVID sent us all into lockdown. Yet here we are ... we survived. And how did we do that? We created our own little support networks, mostly by phone since our meetings were canceled. We checked in with each other when the store finally stocked long-missing items. We baked and left cookies on the porches of those we knew would appreciate them. We learned Zoom and other online video conference programs so we could have face-to-face meeting with family and friends. We beefed up our computer skills, at least enough to enable us to place togo grocery orders at the store or arrange for delivery and to make purchases that Amazon could bring to our door. We roamed YouTube in search of exercise videos for seniors and took free classes of all types. We took up the scatter rugs that could cause trips and falls because we knew that the EMTs who came to our rescue would be leery of COVID and come through the door fully outfitted in biohazard suits. We dared to ask questions and learned that the library will deliver books and the pharmacy will mail prescriptions. All in all, we survived our forced aging in place just fine. We seniors are a tough bunch. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come.

Aya Baya! Dear Readers, Forgive me for using this week’s Hometown Story for selfish purposes. It happens to be a milestone birthday for one of my favorite family members, my aunt Alison, aka “Aya,” who is an avid Penny Saver reader. I want to give her a birthday wish in her favorite publication, so she knows just how special she is! “Aya” got her name quite frankly because I couldn’t say “Alison” as a kid. Something about that vowel + L + vowel combo was too hard for me as a 2-year-old. Then, I apparently gave up after three letters. Either way it stuck, and she became Aya forever after to our family. Western New York has always been home to Aya. She, my mom, and their siblings grew up on a farm in Niagara County. Being 10 years younger than my mother, they didn’t spend a great amount of time together as kids. But after I was born, they became extremely close. Aya started visiting a lot and coming to our family vacations. We loved camping, and my dad did not! Being from the old country, it’s just not in his DNA. But Aya was always game, and we had some great times camping outside together in Maine, the Adirondacks, Cape Cod, and even down to the Carolinas. She also loved coming to my school sports events, concerts, plays, you name it- she was always there! So, what else makes her so great? For one she’s got a terrific sense of humor and loves anything that involves family. She’s the one that has to show up because her presence ensures the mood will be light and fun. She’ll laugh at jokes, good or bad, and her positivity is contagious! She’s also a great sport about being teased, whether we joke about her insistence on going to bed before 9 every night, planning ahead for daylight savings time (LOL), or avoiding overly windy days outside. Jokes aside, what’s been the most fulfilling part of knowing Aya is watching her with my kids now. Growing up we never lived closer than an hour and a half away, but we recently became co-residents of Ontario County. Now, I get to see my kids with the same excitement that I had growing up whenever Aya and “Uncle D” show up at our house. Plus, she always shops from advertisers in the Penny Saver. And just as you came to all my events in school, thank you for now supporting what I do as a professional, Aya.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Walking Difficult After Visit to Bowling Alley ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My partner and I are in our 60s, exercise regularly (three to five times per week), eat a well-balanced diet and are of average weight. Recently, we went bowling for two games and found ourselves sore in the area right below our buttocks. We were very sore for several days, making walking difficult, especially up and down stairs. What would have caused this area to get so sore? We named it “bowling butt” for lack of a medical term. -- M.B. ANSWER: Starting a new activity will often cause people to overuse some muscles that aren’t used to the strain. Bowling involves forceful extension of the thigh, which is the gluteus maximus muscle, as well as other muscles in the hip to maintain stability. Two games were enough to exhaust that muscle, and the untrained muscle will often suffer small tears, which take days to heal properly. The fact that you were sore with activities involving thigh extension helps confirm the diagnosis. Some people think it’s lactic acid in the muscle, but that is gone after a few hours. Naming a disease is serious business, and I did a look for similar names in the literature. I did find “Wii butt,” a pain sensation after playing games, including bowling, on the Wii video game system, but none for actual bowling. I’m not sure “bowling butt” will catch on, however. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SISTERS TOGETHER: MOVE MORE, EAT BETTER (NAPSI)—Obesity is a serious health problem in the United States. More than one in three U.S. adults have obesity and that number increases to more than half—57 percent—among U.S. black women. Research has shown that excess weight may contribute to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and certain kinds of cancer. To help address the problem of obesity, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has updated the program guide for the popular Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better national health awareness program. It encourages black women to reach and maintain a healthy weight by being more physically active and making healthier food choices. The NIDDK updated the Sisters Together program guide to include: • Recent data regarding African American obesity rates • Evidence-based strategies to promote regular physical activity and healthy food choices among black women • Highlights from Sisters Together programs developed by different groups around the country • Tips to create a budget to fund a program • Information on how to grow and manage program interest using social media • Steps to help evaluate and sustain a program • A sample in-kind donation request letter and other forms. The NIDDK encourages anyone who sees a need in his or her community to consider starting a Sisters Together program. The program guide is a free digital resource, available from the NIDDK website, that offers information on how to develop, promote, fund, evaluate and sustain a program. The guide includes sample forms, e-mails and social media posts that users can copy and modify to suit their specific needs. While the resources are aimed at black women ages 18 and older, they can be adapted to promote the “move more, eat better” message among women, youths or men of any age, race, ethnicity or community. Sisters Together began in 1994 as a pilot program conducted by the NIDDK’s Weight-control Information Network (WIN) and several partners in Boston. Based on the success of the pilot program, WIN created the program guide and other resources to support the development of local Sisters Together programs nationwide. Over the past 20 years, local groups across the country have formed partnerships with health centers, local media, recreation centers and other groups to start new Sisters Together programs. Honesty at Work As I was standing in line in a Canandaigua store, a customer ahead of me purchased an item costing $50.00. The cashier picked up only the two $20 bills. The customer picked up the $10 bill and left the store with her item. Moments later the customer came back and paid the remaining amount. She taught my daughter that honesty is always the right thing to do. She did the right thing, and it was definitely noticed. Missing Parts Please beware of thieves who steal catalytic converters from cars parked in public parking spaces next to apartment buildings. It happened to me while borrowing a friend's 2000 Honda Accord. When I parked it on Tuesday, May 3rd, it was purring like a kitten. The next morning, I started it, and it was as loud as an outboard motor. This was in the middle of [local town], a well-guarded suburb. For a thief, this part would net $100-150. For the owner, it will cost $2,300 because of the costly connections and labor for a new catalytic converter. The salvage yards I called all swore they don't deal with catalytic converters. What will they steal next? I suggest using a garage or carport. - Sadder but Wiser Contact Us Why do so many businesses, services and stores even have in their sites a “contact us” form where you can ask a question or make comments? Some give you the runaround just to find the form. Others don’t respond to questions or return an answer. Recently, I submitted one asking a simple question. Nothing. I submitted it a second time, still nothing. I finally went to their competitor and got the answer I was seeking. I’m sure they’ll probably use the COVID excuse. Well, word of mouth carries a lot of weight, especially in a small community. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Event Success! On Saturday, May 14th, the Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley (HBB) held another of its bimonthly hygiene bank events. It was a success, serving several area families and individuals in need. Thank you so much to the many wonderful volunteers who gave their time and energy to make this event possible with everything they do from donating goods to setting up the personal and household cleaning products to assisting guests throughout the event to completing inventory and clean up afterwards. You are all a tremendous blessing, and the HBB is very grateful for your hard work and service. God bless you!
Changing Times Some people live only in the past. Those who believe in no gun control are, I believe, some of those people. When this country was formed, guns were a necessary part of life. Many, if not most, people depended on their guns to provide food for the table and to defend themselves against wild animals. There was also the threat that the country would be attacked by another country. While that is always a possibility, even today, I would have to say that guns would be of little help now since there are much more effective weapons in today’s world. Today, guns are more of a problem in America than a solution. Every day on the news, there are stories of innocent people being killed or injured by guns. Too often, stories tell of mass shootings with young children being the victims.

Though no one knows the true origin of the first scavenger hunts, which evolved from folk games, Elsa Maxwell has been credited with the creation and popularization of the scavenger hunt in the 1930s. Elsa Maxwell was dubbed “hostess with the mostest” and had an affinity for throwing luxurious and entertaining parties. She often organized scavenger hunts for the guests that involved roaming around town, seeking objects from a list. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Need a patch for old woodwork? Try mixing paint (whatever color you’re using) and flour. Make a paste, fill in the holes and let dry. It’s hard like cement, and can be sanded into shape if necessary. * Use baking soda to scrub away stuck-on food on your grill. Sprinkle it on the metal brush, and scrub away. If your grate is beyond the power of fire and baking soda, remove it and lay it on the ground on some newspaper. Spray with oven cleaner and let sit (keep pets and kids away from it). Rinse with a garden hose and replace on the grill.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A common issue with blood donation -- along with other types of charitable contributions -- is that if donors don’t know the recipient, it’s harder to convince them that donating is beneficial. Therefore, in an effort to encourage more young people to give blood, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, sends a text when their donation has been dispensed to someone in need, providing proof that it’s going to good use.
* When you get near the end of a roll of paper towels, save it to put in your car. Put together a kit with the following items: a small bottle of Windex or other cleaner, a squeeze bottle of water, some wet wipes and the short roll of paper towels. Now you’ll always be ready for a quick on-the-road cleanup. * “I have a plastic cup that changes color when the drink is hot. Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect temperature for my baby’s bath. So, I fill the tub and toss in the cup. When the cup starts to change back to its original color (blue), I know the bathwater is not too hot.” -- P. in Idaho * “To remove muffins or rolls from a pan, set it on an old, damp towel for a minute. The steam must loosen the bottoms, because they just slide right out. I thank my mom for this tip.” -- Janey R. via e-mail * Sprinkle baby powder in dish gloves to help them slide on in an instant.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Veterinarian Wait Times Keep Getting Longer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been waiting more than three months to get my dog “Maisie” in for a regular checkup and shots. The veterinarian’s office says they are running behind and had to delay her appointment. Talking to a friend across the country this week, I learned that they are waiting months to get their pets to the vet as well. Is this a national trend? -- Cheryl K. DEAR CHERYL: Unfortunately, it is, especially in major metropolitan areas. The wait for a vet appointment was already lengthening before 2020. After months of waiting, pet owners are all trying to get caught up on checkups and vaccinations. Many more people adopted pets during the lockdown in 2020 to keep them company. And many pandemic restrictions, such as building occupancy limits, are still in place. Add to this a chronic shortage of veterinarians -- an industry that sees some 2,000 vets leaving every year, citing a poor work-life balance. That’s twice the rate of physicians quitting their profession, says the American Veterinary Medical Association. And the lower availability of vet appointments can be seasonal. For large animal vet practices (which deal with livestock, horses, cattle, etc.), spring is their busiest season with calving and foaling taking place. The warm weather reminds pet owners to take their companion pets to the vet as well. Until the wave of catch-up appointments subsides, just be patient. Keep the appointment that is already set with the veterinarian and schedule Maisie’s checkup for next year, if possible.
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

HOMETOWN
Celebration of Life for
Will be held at the Ionia Methodist Church Fellowship Hall Saturday, May 21st 2-4pm Carl E. Brake May 9, 2022 In Memoriam of Carl E. Brake: 7/13/1937 5/9/2022. Carl was predeceased by parents, Dorothy and Glenn; brothers, Joe and William. Survived by children,Chris (Mary), Shawn, Erika, Jason ( Jessica); sisters, Marian (Dirk) Weigert, Peggy (Ralph) Suhr; grandkids, Madison and Hunter Brake, Myles and Emersyn Kesner, Macie Spangler, and Devyn Kesner. Carl lived a full and happy life. He honorably served his country in the US Navy as a young man, and ended up retiring from Gleason Works after 39 years. He loved to hop in his RV and go anywhere the wind blew him, which often included any number of last minute calls to bring along traveling buddies. He also loved to volunteer. He worked for several years at the adult care facility The Brighter Day. When he wasn’t doing that, he was active with the Victor United Methodist Church in Victor ushering, driving folks to appointments, and helping in the clothes closet. There will be a Celebration of Life for Carl on Friday, May 20th from 11am-1pm at the Victor First United Methodist Church, 106 East Main St., Victor. Because Carl truly never met a stranger, we ask that, in lieu of flowers, you would carry on his kindness and pay for a stranger’s meal next time you’re out in his honor.
DID YOU KNOW? According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW HIRING DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce. As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects. Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads.

Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for.
