T
he Canandaigua and 10 other surrounding area Lions Clubs worked together with funding and implementing ‘Lions Roar For Veterans”’ gift bags for Veterans hospitalized at the Canandaigua Veterans Medical Center (VAMC). The Lions gathered at Wood Library on Monday, March 25th, with Lions from 8 of those 11 Lions Clubs that provided 24 Lions to assemble the gift bags. During a Region Business Meeting held at the same time, Past District Governor (PDG) Rena Haigh delivered a brief but informative and inspirational talk on membership, including a hand-out for each Lion to take back to their clubs. The Canandaigua Lions set up gift bag assembly tables while the other clubs were having the Region meeting on Monday. Lion Diane Seward provided “Lions Roar for Veterans” graphics that were used on the bags, wine for door prize raffles, and sign-in and wine raffle management. Lion Melanie supported the Project Manager with supervising set up and implementing the assembly process, providing wine for raffling, purchasing and patience with the Project Manager. On Tuesday, March 26th, 10 clubs provided 14 Lions who distributed the gift bags directly to the Veterans Community Living Centers (CLC’s). A photo of a group of Lions (and a Leo) was taken at the Veterans Administration Voluntary Services (VAVS ) office. This year, Immediate Past District Governor (IPDG) Harold Bush once again provided a patriotic musical backdrop to our efforts. The Lions delivered 87 gift bags to three separate Community Living Centers (CLC’s) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC). Each bag contained 6 personal care items especially selected for the Veterans with the assistance of the great people in Voluntary Services at the VAMC, including Gina Deck, John Fiero, and Robin Johnson. We also delivered a supply of sports, fishing etc. magazines to each CLC. We met Floor Supervisors Lydia and Deanna, Lions Club veterans gift bag. and Recreational Therapist Lucy, who are all doing a great job taking care of the daily needs of our Veterans. Rushville Leo’s contributed custom-made, ‘Thank You Veterans’ greeting cards again this year. Caleb Troy, a Bloomfield Leo, attended and was assigned the task of distributing the cards to the Veterans. Caleb attended with his father who is a Bloomfield Lion and a Veteran at the VAMC. Financial contributions came from Lions in Spencer-Candor, Geneva, Oswego, Ovid-Willard,
Lions Club members create gift bags for veterans.
Bloomfield, Pal-Mac, Phelps, Twin Cities, Rushville, Manchester-Shortsville and Canandaigua. Individual Lions also contributed: Past Council Chairman (PCC) Bill and PDG Lynn Williams (Rushville) and Victor President Jeff and Kayco Jarmusz. Donations from all Lions and Clubs were, as always, greatly appreciated! Without their support, this project would not happen! There was a major increase in the number of Veterans served this year compared to last year’s “Lions Roar for Veterans “ Program. The count went from 48 bags last year to 87 bags this year, due in most part to a very generous, special donation from the Spencer-Candor Lions! We very much appreciated their extraordinary contribution to this year’s Veterans Project! The success of this project was witnessed in the faces of the Veterans who received the benefit of the Gift Bags. All Lions who contributed in any way should feel a patriotic sense of pride in accomplishing a very positive impactful result. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Perhaps an original story, a personal experience, community happening, or school event? Add some photos, and your story will be featured on our popular website for all to see. Who knows - it may even end up in print! It’s easy to do. Go to My Hometown at www.gvpennysaver.com to view previously posted stories and to post your own. Visit My Hometown today!

Adopting a Shelter Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply. There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies.

Here are some important questions you should ask: • Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown? • Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet? • If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)? Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines. HOROSCOPE
Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There’s nothing an Aries Lamb likes less than having to tackle a humdrum task. But finding a creative way to do it can make all the difference. A more exciting time awaits you this weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Finishing up a job on time leaves you free to enjoy your weekend without any Taurean guilt pangs. A romantic attitude from an unlikely source could take you by surprise. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Moving in a new career direction might be seen by some as risky. But if you have both the confidence to see it through and the facts to back you up, it could prove rewarding. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Holding back on a decision might be difficult, considering how long you’ve waited for this opportunity. But until you’re able to resolve all doubts, it could be the wiser course to take. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You still need to move carefully where financial matters are concerned. Better for the Lion to move slowly than pounce on a “promising” prospect that doesn’t keep its promises. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A rejection of an idea you believe in can be upsetting. But don’t let it discourage you. Get yourself back on track and use what you’ve learned from the experience to try again. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The early part of the week could find you looking to balance your priorities between your family obligations and your career responsibilities. Pressures begin to ease by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An associate’s problem could cause unavoidable delays in moving ahead with your joint venture. If so, use the time to look into another project you had previously set aside. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although a financial problem could be very close to being resolved in your favor, it’s still a good idea to avoid unnecessary spending for at least a little while longer. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Support for some unwelcome workplace decisions begins to show up, and continues to build, so that by week’s end, the gregarious Goat is as popular as ever. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Congratulations. Deciding to attend a social function you might have earlier tried to avoid could turn out to be one of the best decisions you’ve made in a long time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting into a new situation could prove to be a more difficult experience than you expected. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice in coping with some of the more irksome challenges. BORN THIS WEEK: Your strong sense of duty makes you a valued and trusted member of your community. Have you considered a career in law enforcement? (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc

general good health. He never washes his hands when he comes in from working as a public accountant. He doesn’t wash his hands when he sneezes, or after touching meat and poultry when he cooks. He smokes and is a functioning alcoholic. He says it’s not necessary to wash fruit before you eat it and tells me I don’t know what I am talking about. He has been on Lipitor for several years and eats steak almost every night. On the other hand, I wash my hands when I come in from work and before preparing meals, and have always washed fruit before eating it. What’s his secret? Does he have strong genes? -- T.M. ANSWER: Eating well and taking good care of yourself don’t guarantee a long, healthy life. The converse is true as well. I have heard so many stories about Aunt Martha (or Gertrude or Helen), who drank, smoked and lived on bacon until she was 105, but your lifestyle does give you a better chance at living longer and healthier, and of feeling better right now. Smoking increases the risk of dying from any cause. A 74-yearold man who has smoked all his life has about the same risk of dying as an 82-year-old nonsmoker. One can do a similar risk analysis with diet. But some people, through a combination of good genes and good luck, manage to live long, healthy lives despite poor lifestyle choices. Even though some individuals will not have the expected outcome, smoking is still bad. So is eating steak every night. Washing (or at least rinsing) produce is a good idea. ***

I can remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 27, 1941, the British navy sinks the German battleship Bismarck in the North Atlantic near France, where it fled because it was leaking fuel. The German death toll was more than 2,000. Three days earlier, the Bismarck had sunk the British battlecruiser Hood. * On May 28, 1957, National League owners vote unanimously to allow the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers to move to San Francisco and Los Angeles, respectively, on the condition that both teams had to move. * On May 29, 2003, some 35 U.S. states declare it to be Bob Hope Day when the iconic comedic actor and entertainer turns 100 years old. Show Mom You Care: Have A Conversation About Long Term Care Insurance (NAPS)—This year, as you look back at the many years your mother cared for you, consider the possibility that she may require care herself someday. Long term care insurance can help ensure that your mother will get the care she needs, should there come a time when she requires help managing some of the activities we associate with independent living. Millions of Americans require long term care during their lifetime,1 which includes assistance with simple tasks like bathing, eating and dressing—trivial things we do every day without a second thought. In reality, the type of care needed to provide assistance with these activities can be expensive and is generally not covered by traditional health plans or Medicare. It’s important to keep in mind that women, in general, live longer than men. This means that women may be more likely to need care at some point in their lives than their male counterparts.2 Should that need arise—whether it’s assistance to perform activities of daily living or supervision due to a severe cognitive impairment—it’s likely to be provided by a family member or friend. Unfortunately, this may not be an ideal option, with many families living far apart from each other. And, your mother may not be willing to place that burden on you or even a close friend. The good news is, she is eligible to apply for coverage under the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP). Encourage your qualified relatives to plan now The best time for your family members to consider long term care insurance is long before they need it. Because the FLTCIP is medically underwritten, it’s important for your qualified relatives to apply when they are in good health to avoid the risk that a future illness or condition may prevent them from obtaining coverage later. Also, premiums are directly related to age. This means the younger people are when they apply for coverage, the lower their premium. You may wish to consider applying for coverage as well, as a way to help secure your family’s future. With benefits designed specifically for the federal family, the FLTCIP offers a smart way to help protect your savings and assets should you or your loved ones need long term care services someday. Many members of the federal family are eligible to apply for coverage under the FLTCIP, including federal and U.S. Postal Service employees and annuitants, as well as active and retired members of the uniformed services. Certain family members, or qualified relatives, are also eligible. Qualified relatives include your spouse, domestic partner, parents and parents-in-law, and adult children. For a complete list of who is eligible to apply, visit LTCFEDS. com/eligibility. For personalized assistance, call (800) LTC-FEDS ( (800) 5823337)/TTY (800) 843-3557 to speak with a program consultant. 1

STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well.
CRANE’s
Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day, but can be especially hazardous in the early morning sunrise and late-afternoon sunset.

A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement. Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.

How can I get my hydrangeas to bloom? - Mary R. There are several reasons why macrophylla hydrangeas don’t bloom. They need winter protection to keep the buds from freezing. Deer often will eat the buds, which form the previous season. And often they gradually reduce their blooms each year because they don’t thrive in our cold winters. There are other kinds of hydrangeas that do bloom reliably in our weather. Both panicle hydrangeas and arborescens hydrangeas bloom very well here. The arborescens varieties are most deer resistant. I spray the buds on my panicle hydrangeas with deer re-

Large single trunks may be cut back to a stump to encourage growth of new stems from the roots. Clumps of overgrown stems may be thinned out about a third a year starting with oldest, weakest and damaged.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

DID YOU KNOW? When tending to their lawns, homeowners are advised to pay attention to areas that may feature standing water. According to the World Health Organization, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can breed in great numbers in pools of water. Mosquitoes are known to carry diseases like malaria, West Nile virus and Zika. Furthermore, mosquitoes that bite pets can transmit heartworms, a serious problem if gone it goes undiscovered. Standing water also can be a haven for bacteria, mold and parasites that are dangerous to human health. If standing, stagnant water is a problem in your yard, remediation is necessary. Directing downspouts away from the house can remediate standing water. Changing the grading of soil so that low spots are elevated is another way to reduce instances of standing water. This may be a project that requires the assistance of a drainage professional. In addition, homeowners can remove standing water from empty flower pots, pool covers, bird baths, and more to reduce the likelihood that mosquitoes will appear on their properties.

Due in part to more aggressive marketing by solar energy companies, as well as greater awareness by customers, solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years. The Solar Energy Industries Association® reports that solar energy in the United States is booming. The association offers that, since the passage of The Solar Investment Tax Credit in 2006, solar has experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60 percent. While many might assume that environmental preservation is the driving force behind the growing popularity of solar energy, it’s actually the financial benefits of solar energy that are leading the way. One Block Off the Grid polled nearly 200 solar homeowners to learn more about their motivations for going solar. Roughly 75 percent would not have gone solar if there was no economic benefit to doing so. A number of people who have switched to solar say they are getting a high rate of return on the investment. The average electricity bill a person saw prior to solar energy hovered around $177 a month. After the conversion, bills were now as low as $55.

If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl. Drain the skewers. Thread the chicken pieces alternately with the onion pieces onto the skewers, using about 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of onion for each skewer. As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil. The grilling goes quickly, so set up your workstation next to the grill before you begin: the plate holding the skewers, the bowl of sauce and a basting brush and/ or the salt, and tongs for turning the skewers. If using the basting sauce, either dip each skewer in the sauce or brush the sauce on the skewers and then place directly over the heat. Grill the skewers, turning 3 or 4 times and basting with additional sauce, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are scorched around the edges, about 5 minutes total. If the sauce appears to be burning at any point, move the skewers to a cooler part of the grill, or reduce the heat if using a gas grill. If using salt instead of the basting sauce, place the skewers directly over the heat and grill, turning 3 or 4 times, until cooked through, about 5 minutes total. Sprinkle both sides of each skewer with salt and remove from the grill. Serve the skewers piping hot.

Recently, Golden Coin Laundry/Dry Cleaning was kindly helpful, without their customer even asking. A partly disabled, senior citizen was helped getting some drapes with special instructions washed, then when dry and pressed, back out into the car again. There was good, honest, communication So tonight, I was out walking my dog in our peaceful village as I often do. My dog is, of course, leashed with doggy bags on hand and is on the municipal side grass. My dog is in her senior years and likes to stop and piddle periodically, even if there’s nothing left. Out of nowhere, this woman pulls over and proceeds to proclaim that I must pick up the dog poop, insinuating my dog had pooped in her yard, with a hoity toity attitude. My dog had not pooped at all, and if she had, I certainly don’t need to be pre-advised of my responsibilities. The woman quickly rushed away, surely realizing her own arrogance and haste. My dog is a good judge of character, and we both concur hers really stinks!
and empathetic, capable assistance. That was such good, local customer service, one could recommend them for future business. Thank you, Golden Coin.
The Avon Circle looks beautiful with the Military banners hanging and the gardens planted and starting to bloom. The Avon Garden Club always does a beautiful job with the flowers throughout the village. The help from the village crew makes it all possible too. Without the volunteers and village crew it wouldn’t be possible. Thank you and Happy Memorial Day!
new units. Two electricians showed up on time but slow walked the job. After 3 hours, both of them had only managed to install 4 thermostats total. Turns out they were overheard talking to each other about how they had hooked the wires up incorrectly, and when the units were placed back in the wall, the wires actually came loose! These novice mistakes, including troubleshooting them, took up valuable time that we were paying for by the hour. When I contacted the owner to voice my concern, he unfortunately made more excuses for his employees than he did offers to help me, his customer. I felt duped.

You will find Christmas decorations, Easter decorations, multiple containers of fake flowers, multiple figurines, and even beer cans, beer cans on graves of young people who died because of alcohol. This is not showing respect for the dead. We are in May, and the holiday wreaths are still on the graves. I understand our need to grieve and to display our love for someone who has passed, but we can’t overdue and infringe on the rights of neighboring graves. We have to keep things neat. Please, everyone go clean up your loved one’s grave.

Recently an individual commented within a post about increasing hate towards certain groups across the country. I have to disagree with that and am offended by that opinion.
Page 34
I have no hate feeling for any group and hope that the poster of that comment feels the same way. We, as a country, need to move forward. Just a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of our service members, who put their lives in harm’s way to protect our values and way of life. Just because people have money, doesn’t mean they are above the law. Compare your house to your rental? Really? That means you, Mr. & Mrs. Landlord, for not providing a rental that was up to standards and codes. Talk about multiple violations!!! You both should receive citations.

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners. EMPLOYMENT
