The Cornerstone Market of Honeoye Celebrates Five Years By Amanda Dudek

O

n Saturday, May 25th, The Cornerstone Market in Honeoye hosted festivities in honor of five-year anniversary. Established in 2014 by husband and wife Alysha and Ian Baier along with their friend and partner, Peggy Jane O’Neill, the Cornerstone Market carries homemade sandwiches, soups, baked goods and other prepared foods as well as a unique assortment of specialty items and beverages, including craft beers, wines and ciders. The celebration reflected these and more. A blue and white striped canopy tent stretched over a stage, tables and chairs stood in the center of the lawn as local bands played for the crowd. Tastings were offered, including wines and mead from Noble Shepherd Craft Brewery. Samples of homemade foods were carried to guests with more available for purchase. Inside, specialty items, homemade foods and a counter laden with robust and attractive baked goods beckoned guests to linger, explore and sample. Owner Alysha Baier remembers when it all began. “The landlord of the building where I had my studio is also invested in several properties in town,” explained Alysha. “He informed me that a storefront would be opening up and asked if we were interested in doing something with it.” Alysha spoke with her husband, Ian, who has a great deal of background in food service. They had some ideas of their own, and decided to involve their friend, Peggy, who was looking to start a similar business at the time. “We all talked it out and decided to do it,” said Alysha. The Cornerstone Market launched as a specialty grocery store and bakery; however, its focus shifted somewhat after the unexpected loss of partner Peggy in March 2015. “Losing Peggy was very hard,” Alysha said. “We lost our friend and partner within our first year.” Peggy was a vegetarian/vegan with Giant Homemade Cupcake special dietary needs, The Cornerstone Market so originally, such foods were the focus of the store. “We still have a lot of those items as well as tofu options,” said Alysha. “We shifted to prepared food and sandwiches, homemade soups and baked goods, craft beers, specialty items and drinks while minimizing the grocery aspect of our business.” “We also try to source as local as we can,” said Alysha. “We have someone local who grows shitake mushrooms for us, for example. We carry The Soap Hag locally-made soaps as well as The Green Heart of the Finger Lakes products.” Beverages have also been a hit. “We carry Harney & Sons Teas of Millerton, NY. They now make CBD teas which have become quite popular. We carry Saranac and Stewarts sodas, both of New York State. We carry craft beers, ciders and wines from such producers as BlackBird Cider Works, 1911 ciders and also Three Heads Brewery who always participates whenever we do a

tasting.” Alysha and Ian are excited about their recently established relationship with Noble Shepherd Craft Brewery, as well. It hasn’t always been easy. “The past five years have been filled with a lot of challenges, especially the loss of Peggy, but they have also been filled with a lot of amazing and beautiful things,” Alysha recalled. “We have made many friends and become a bigger part of our community. That is what it is really all about, not simply making money.” Alysha explained that many in the community have been very supportive, and that even those who have been more reticent have begun to realize that the market offers something positive and unique to the community. Alysha and Ian are continuing to grow The Cornerstone Market. “We would like our business to become a destination,” said Alysha. “I recently incorporated my pottery into the business, transforming one of our kitchens into my own my own pottery studio where people can come and watch me make pottery. We are also planning to work with We have made Birdhouse Brewing when it many friends opens in September.”

and become a Alysha and Ian hope other businesses consider bigger part of locating to Honeoye, as the community. well. “This town has a lot of potential,” shared Alysha. - Alysha Baier “It is growing and developing, and we believe it is going to get there. The town will be going through some renovations to improve vehicular and pedestrian traffic.” Honeoye already has wonderful hiking trails and the Finger Lakes, two of which are close by, attracting cyclists as well as other visitors. Also, Sandy Bottom Park on Honeoye Lake was just renovated and should be a greater draw. “We never expected to make a million dollars,” added Alysha. “We simply want to do what we love and get by.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? (NAPS)—Most people have a vision of their golden years that includes a comfortable retirement in which they can spend their time doing the things they enjoy. That dream doesn’t require a substantial amount of wealth, but it is a lot more attainable if you have some financial stability. Unfortunately, just 17 percent of older Americans are “financially healthy” and four in five low- and moderate-income Americans over the age of 50 are struggling with at least some aspect of their financial lives, according to a 2019 study funded by AARP Foundation. Here are five tips for increasing financial stability during your retirement years: 1. Stay out of debt. Debt can be destabilizing because it robs seniors of some of their free cash flow and reduces the amount of money they can spend each month. Credit card spending is especially dangerous for retirees, so consider a pay-as-you-go habit for new purchases. 2. Be a smart investor. Whether you have a small retirement savings or a large investment portfolio, a diversified low-cost investment strategy can deliver additional income for spending and help you stay ahead of inflation. Choose a mix of stocks, bonds and cash that helps you sleep soundly at night, according to The Vanguard Group. 3. Consider downsizing. Many retirees are hesitant to move out of the home where they raised their children, which is understandable for both emotional and practical reasons. But it might improve your financial stability to sell your current home and buy a less expensive one for retirement, pocketing the difference and investing it wisely. 4. Delay Social Security. For retirees who have not yet signed up to collect their Social Security benefits, it may be advisable to delay that start date as long as possible. This may sound counterintuitive if you are searching for financial stability, but research has found that most seniors will benefit from the higher payouts they will receive by deferring to age 70, if possible. 5. Increase cash flow. One way to raise the amount of cash available for funding your retirement is to work part-time, an option that is more available to seniors than ever before. Another possibility is to unlock cash tied up in assets that you might not even realize can be sold. For example, a life insurance policy is considered your personal property and—as such— you have the right to sell that policy anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy in a “life settlement” transaction, the policy owner gets a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit when the original policyholder passes away. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. A comfortable retirement is possible without an enormous nest egg, but it is very difficult without at least some degree of financial stability. By staying out of debt, practicing smart personal finance and maximizing cash flow, the vision you had of your golden years could be within reach.

bacteria? After going to a hospital to get a mole checked, I developed an itchy rash that won’t go away. I am worried. -- H.W. ANSWER: Let me reassure you that this isn’t flesh-eating bacteria. Itchy rash around a mole can be due to eczema, or it might be a fungal infection or one of several other benign skin conditions. A dermatologist can help figure out which. But, since you asked ... The term “flesh-eating bacteria” is misleading since it’s a disease, not a particular bacteria species. The term refers to a condition called “necrotizing fasciitis” (“necrotizing” means that the infection kills cells, and “fasciitis” references the connective tissue in the body that the infection proceeds along). However terrifying, it is fortunately a rare condition. There are only about 1-3 cases per 100,000 people. It may occur in people who are otherwise healthy and who happen to get an injury that penetrates the skin. But it is more common in people who have a diminished immune system due to chronic illness (diabetes, kidney or liver disease, cancer, heavy alcohol use). In most cases, in people with chronic disease, it is a combination of bacteria that cause the infection. In previously healthy people, the bacteria most associated are group A streptococcus. This bacteria strain has enzymes that damage the body and has the ability to evade the immune system. It can grow very rapidly, and early treatment is paramount to stopping the infection before permanent damage is done. In some cases, amputation is necessary; in others, no treatment is effective. The disease has a high mortality rate. The particular bacteria in a person with this diagnosis are very dangerous, and there are cases of person-to-person transmission of the bacteria, leading to additional cases, so caregivers and family need personal protective equipment. Effective treatment starts with recognition of the diagnosis. That can be hard; initial signs, such as redness, swelling and fever, can be nonspecific. Skin lesions, like blisters or bruising, can be misleading. However, a very high fever and more pain than expected are big clues to the diagnosis. Treatment is primarily surgical. Antibiotics alone are ineffective. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: A recent column on sinusitis argued against

KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep. routine antibiotics. Your advice, while sound, does not apply to all of us. I am an MDS patient with compromised immunity. When I get sick, it takes three times as long to recover. I feel the rules may apply to “normal” people, but not all of us. What would you recommend for someone like me? -- B.F. ANSWER: My answers certainly do not apply to all situations, and immunocompromised individuals are an excellent example. In the case of sinus infections, it depends on the person’s exact type of immune problem. Immunocompromised individuals certainly are more likely to be prescribed antibiotics, and are more likely to be subject to diagnostic testing when things don’t go as expected. Some kinds of immune system disease predispose people to unusual infections, which require specific treatments. Taking care of anyone requires judgment and experience, and physicians who have known their patients a long time are in a better position to judge who needs antibiotic treatment for sinus infection and who does well with supportive treatment. In the case of someone with immune system disease, that is even more important. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

What’s In Your Water?

POST-WINTER GARDEN PREP Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks.

DID YOU KNOW? Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Curled, cracked or missing shingles may prove troublesome. Inclement weather can test the strength of even the most durable roofs. Even though many roofs are designed to last up to 30 years, some may need to be replaced early, particularly when they have been exposed to harsh weather over a period of years. Individual shingles can be replaced as spot treatments, but if the damage is widespread, a new roof may be necessary.

Their collective participation played a key role in the smooth facilitation of the event and was very much appreciated. A huge Thank You from Pittsford Sutherland High School to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance, Keenan Funeral Home, Sutherland Auto, and the Sutherland student actors for participating in the DWI crash reenactment on 5/14. I waited and passed legally, and when I did, what did she do, she sped up. I barely got passed her and had to jerk over due to running out of passing lane as I reached the crest of the hill. I couldn’t slow and get back behind her because the truck then tailgated her. Why isn’t this a criminal act? It appeared to be intentional on both their parts. I now have a dash cam and will take it to the police station if need be. Funny, after I got over, she turned left. My first thought was to turn around but then I would get the blame for road rage even though they created the dangerous GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Kudos to Joanna Aguglia, St. Christopher’s Church, and Gates To Recovery. An open panel presentation/discussion was brought to our Church on May 20th. The topics were drug addiction, suicide/overdose statistics,

toxic vaping and how Gates To Recovery is there to help, 24/7. Over 75 people attended, and it was open to the public, very informative. The epidemics are real Stigmas must be erased in order for us and our loved ones to be understood and respected. These concerning issues are very, very active in our communities. Thanks to all who patronized my yard sale on May 25 on East Lake Rd, Livonia. Together we raised $277.55 for the Livonia Ambulance. People found

To the person who cried censorship because a local movie theater isn’t showing a certain movie: If a government official prevents a movie from being shown, that is censorship. Movie theaters, however, can and do refuse to show movies all the time. It’s how private business works. Spring makes its own statement, so loud and clear that the gardener seems to be only one of the instruments, not the composer. ~ Geoffrey B. Charlesworth

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Try using that Aries charm to warm up the usual set of workplace naysayers, and then back it up with a solid block of facts and figures to sell your idea to your colleagues. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While nothing can deter a determined Bovine from following a course you believe in, it helps to have some supporting data and statements by trusted colleagues to make your case. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Take advantage of new information that could help make your career transition easier. The weekend is a good time to re-establish relationships with people you haven’t seen in a while. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal matters demand your attention as oncestable situations begin to shift. Quick action to shore things up is called for in order to avoid more problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although your financial picture begins to brighten, “thrift” and “caution” are still the watchwords for fiscally astute Leos and Leonas to live by. Expect news about a family matter. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Before you try to blame a colleague for a workplace problem, make sure you have the proof to back you up. Make some quiet inquiries on your own to try to solicit more information. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to cheer up a depressed friend or downcast family member can be difficult. But keep at it, and your efforts should soon pay off in ways you might have never expected. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Taking a new look at an old and frequently recurring problem might lead you to consider making some surprising changes in the way you had been handling it up till now. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Despite what the naysayers might say, setting your sights on a new goal could be one of the smartest things the typically sagacious Sagittarian has done in a long time. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Rebuilding an unraveling relationship won’t be easy. But you can do it, if you really want to. Just remember to keep the lines of communication open between the two of you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new friendship could develop into a close relationship. Meanwhile, reassure an old friend who might be feeling neglected that he or she is still an important part of your life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might be feeling that you’re still in over your head as you continue trying to adjust to your new situation. But the pressures ease by week’s end, giving you time to come up for air. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for sensing the feelings of others. You might consider a career in some aspect of counseling. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country.
