A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts. ~Washington Irving

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: After my mother passed away last year, I brought her two cats to live with me. They’re sweet and have settled in nicely, but they also have fleas. These came with them from my mom’s house. Giving them a bath removes the fleas temporarily, but after a couple of weeks both cats are covered again. How can I get rid of these pests once and for all? -- Jeremy in Knoxville DEAR JEREMY: My condolences on your mother’s passing, and thank you for caring for her pets. While it may be impossible to completely get rid of fleas, you can drastically reduce the level of infestation on your cats. Here’s how: -- Continue regular treatment of the cats through flea baths, collars or topical treatments. -- Comb through the cats’ fur daily using your fingers or a brush: Tiny dark specks indicate that fleas are still present. -- Don’t let cats outdoors: Fleas and ticks will hitch a ride on their fur. -- Two to four times a year, treat your entire home for fleas. These pests can lay hundreds or thousands of tiny eggs in your cats’ hair, in carpets and rugs, and in dusty corners. Close your cats in a safe room and sprinkle flea powder across the carpet and into the corners, let sit for as many hours as the instructions say, then vacuum up. Wash rugs, if possible. -- Dust and vacuum your home once a week. Vacuum twice per week in peak flea season, during the warmer months. This helps remove unhatched flea eggs. Vigilance and a proactive cleaning and treatment routine will keep those fleas at bay. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Avon Village DPW We would like to take a moment to recognize Superintendent Ken Farrell and the entire Avon DPW crew. They do a wonderful job for our village, and we are lucky to have them. We can’t thank them enough for the hard work and attention they give us as residents, always with such a pleasant attitude. We truly appreciate everything you do! Thank you. - M. Family.

Me, too Take 2 You said that “seems like a lot of our officials are being accused of a crime, “and it seems okay for them to stay in office with no pressure or consequences”. This is how it should work. Innocent until proven guilty is the fundamental basis of the US legal system. If every accusation led to an immediate punishment, then everyone with a grudge against someone could exact revenge with unfounded claims. Are these officials guilty of these crimes? I don’t know, and neither do you, for certain. Let the courts do their job. Patience grasshopper.

Electric cars, etc. It’s been raining, cloudy for several days. Wait, where are my wonderful solar powered garden lights? They’re not on because the sun hasn’t been out. Some people in this country think solar and wind power is what we need. If they’re serious, we need to see wind turbines all along the lake shores, where the progressives like to live. Solar panels on the sides of the hills in the Finger Lakes, in the Adirondacks. We know they’ll put these eye sores anywhere but where they live and play. NY passes a bill to have all electric vehicles by

Kudos to Hunter Apology This hunter provided a detailed apology for his mistakes when he inadvertently went on to someone’s property that he had not sought permission from. He owned up to his error, took responsibility, and vowed to do better in the future. This is the most refreshing and uplifting piece I’ve read in a very long time - to be reminded that folks like this are among us. My hat’s off to him. 2035. No more boats, snow mobiles...what about that generator you use when the lights go off? No gasoline. No more classic car shows. They want us to go back to the middle ages. Wake up people. Think about it. To vaccinate or not to vaccinate My body; my choice. Why should I be segregated from living my life if I choose not to?

There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose. Staying In This Mother’s Day?

5 GREAT AT-HOME WAYS TO CELEBRATE MOM BY ANNA KUBIAK & SCOTT WURTZEL

M

others have a special place in our hearts—as caregivers, best friends, and role models—and it’s time once again to show them how much we love them. Whether you admire your mother for her courage, strength, sacrifice (or all of the above!), Mother’s Day is the perfect time to pause and say thank you. COVID-19 has been hard on everyone, so let’s pamper our mothers as they truly deserve. Try one or two or all of our fun ideas for spoiling Mom in the comfort of her own home!

Cook something different! Anna: Breakfast in bed is a well-known staple of Mother’s Day for many families; however, a full English breakfast takes this surprise to the next level. Originating in England in the 1300s, the full English breakfast is one of the longest standing traditions in English history. Beginning as a luxury meal for high society, the breakfast includes bacon, sausage, eggs, toast, baked beans, hash browns, tomatoes, and mushrooms all served on one plate with freshly brewed coffee or tea. Black pudding is usually included in the authentic version, but it is optional. Spend quality time with Mom as she enjoys your creation. Scott: In a lot of families, moms are the ones who do the cooking for the family. On Mother’s Day, take the opportunity to cook something new for dinner so Mom can relax. It may be easier to simply make something that you have all the time, but trying something different can show how much you care. There were probably multiple points growing up at which your mom went out of her way to cook something new, and doing the same for her can go a long way in making her day special.

Unplug & Unwind! Scott: Activities that people have forgotten, but which have regained a lot of popularity in recent years, are board and card games. These can range anywhere from UNO to Monopoly. They can be really fun if you take the time to get into them, and it’s a great way to enjoy family time with your mom. Anna: There is no better way to pamper your mother than to treat her to her own special spa day. A DIY spa day is a simple and cost-effective way to create an unforgettable experience in your own home. From homemade masks to fragrant candles to personalized manicures, at-home spa days are customizable to your mother’s fancies. They are a great way to set the mood while giving your mother the opportunity to relax and unwind.

Lunch & a Movie Anna: Nothing says Happy Mother’s Day like fine china and dainty sandwiches. Organize an elegant tea party for your mother by baking some tea cookies and spending time with her. With

some sophistication, manners, and lots of love, your Mother is bound to feel like royalty, making this a simple yet distinctive way to pamper her on her special day. To spruce things up, consider adding a fancy tablecloth, dressing up, using place cards, and playing her favorite music to set the atmosphere. Scott: One thing that many mothers appreciate is memories of you (and your siblings, if you have any) when you were younger. There are multiple sites that can help you make a well-put-together scrapbook, but you can do something even simpler than that. Have fun with loads of free software available to make a slideshow of pictures set to music. Showing pictures of you and your mom over the years, set to her favorite songs, can help you show her just how much she has always meant to you and your family.

At Home & Abroad Scott: Being there + spending time = happy Mom: If there is one thing I have heard my own mom say over and over, it’s that she loves when she “has her boys home”. Many moms feel happy when their children are home and spending time with them. It can be as simple as the whole family being in the kitchen or family room. Just having her children around her spells happiness for many a mom! Anna: During the COVID-19 pandemic, many popular museums have adjusted to offer virtual tours. This Mother’s Day, museums around the world are welcoming virtual visitors to tour their attractions in a safe environment. This option offers the ability to experience world famous museums from the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to the British Museum in London to NASA tours of the moon. This year is the perfect opportunity to share a memorable cultural experience with your mother.

Bonus Idea from Anna! Anna: According to a behavioral study conducted by Rutgers University, being around flowers can boost a person’s mood and increase their happiness. While giving your mother flowers is a good Mother’s Day option, why not sign her up for a flower arranging class? These classes can be attended virtually and offer the opportunity to learn the elements that go into the perfect design as well as how to care for flowers. Classes are offered by larger businesses such as 1-800-Flowers as well as by smaller business owners in the area. The practice of flower arrangement has been known to prompt a connection between people and is commonly used as a way to reduce stress and anxiety.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * We heard from J.D. in Northern Colorado about a recent tip on egg carton use. He wanted to remind me that while Styrofoam egg cartons may be easily recyclable in some places (I take them to my local grocery store), that’s not true for all states. Thanks for the reminder, J.D., and for being a reader. Maybe it’s time to lobby our grocery chains to switch to cardboard cartons. * “I put dryer sheets in any size wastebasket. One can put three or four folded out to stand up and put a bag in the basket for a fresher smell. Change dryer sheets as often as you like.” -- S.H. in Minnesota * B.H. in Washington has an interesting tactic to keep ants off her hummingbird feeder, which hangs from a pole. “Cut a small hole out of the bottom of a grocery sack, thread the hole on the pole, slide down about two-thirds of the way, tape the edges to the pole tightly, and let the sack hang down like a bell. You will never have another ant climbing up your feeder pole.” * Get lots of extra bathroom storage by hanging an organizer over the back of the door. Look online and you’ll find fancy versions made with drawers and hooks, or just use a good old-fashioned plastic shoe organizer that you can pick up at your local big box for less than $10. * To remove a persistent smell from a lunchbox, wash thoroughly with baking soda and dish soap, then hang to dry. Stuff the lunchbox with crumpled up newspaper and seal for a day. Remove the newspaper, and hopefully the smell with it.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne Are you a fan of hot peppers? One you might want to avoid is the Dragon's Breath chili pepper, which could kill you by causing a type of anaphylactic shock, burning and even closing your airway. But Mike Smith, its inventor, never intended it to be eaten: It was actually developed for use as a topical numbing agent for people who are allergic to regular anesthetics. Only two countries use the color purple in their national flags -- Dominica and Nicaragua. Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Peter Benchley's "Jaws" made a lot of folks afraid to go back in the water, but perhaps what they should have been more concerned about is the fact that the sea is also home to nearly 200,000 different kinds of viruses! It is illegal to enter the House of Parliament while wearing a suit of armor.

Here’s what’s happening at your local library… Eating Out on Mother’s Day Hire a sitter for young kids. Although Mother’s Day is a chance for the entire family to spend time together, the main goal is to ensure Mom’s comfort and happiness. If very young children are in tow, she may not be able to relax and enjoy her meal. Infants will need to be fed, and toddlers may be easily distracted. Have a sitter watch little ones when adults are dining out, and then Mom can enjoy time with the kids when she returns home for more celebrating. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE Join a marathon. The statistics reporting site StatisticsBrain.com states that only 0.5 percent of the U.S. and Canadian populations have ever run a marathon. Running on the treadmill at the gym or a couple of miles around the track is excellent exercise. Runners can take their passion a bit further by enrolling in any of the hundreds of marathons and half-marathons held annually. Crossing the finish line after running 26.2 miles is a rewarding feeling, and few activities do more to improve endurance than running a marathon.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT Vary workouts and exercise regularly. Varying workouts is a good idea because doing so can prevent repetitive-use injuries and prevent overuse of muscles. Repetitive-use injuries such as shin splints and tendinitis require extended rest to heal, and that can derail your routine and nullify your progress. Vary workouts so you are not always working the same muscles, and don’t mistake varying workouts for varying workout schedules. Working out five days one week and one day the next increases your risk of injury. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

May is Better Hearing Month

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Myasthenia Gravis Hits Nerve/Muscle Juncture ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: What can you tell me about myasthenia gravis? My dear friend was diagnosed with it and hospitalized for eight days. She is able to walk and move about, but now, six weeks later, she is still on a liquid diet and unable to move any of her facial muscles. -- I.M. ANSWER: Myasthenia gravis, from the Latin and Greek for “serious muscle weakness,” is an autoimmune disease that attacks the connection of nerves to muscles. Specifically, the body attacks the acetylcholine receptor or its associated proteins, where nerves connect to skeletal muscles. This causes weakness of the muscles and increased susceptibility to fatigue. The diagnosis of MG is suggested by typical symptoms, the most common of which are eye symptoms like double vision or droopy eyelid (ptosis). A smaller number of people will have symptoms that involve eating and chewing -- this sounds like your friend’s primary problem -- and a few will have weakness in the limbs, neck or face, or of the breathing muscles. The diagnosis is usually confirmed by blood testing, but a few people will need more sophisticated testing, such as an electrical muscle stimulation test. MG commonly affects women under 40 and men over 60, but it can occur in any age group. The thymus, an immune organ that is located in the upper chest behind the sternum (breastbone), is an important origination point for MG, and 10% to 15% of people with MG have tumors of the thymus. Surgical removal of the thymus is often performed to improve symptoms. In addition to removal of the thymus, there are three other types of treatment for MG. The first is medicines that help the nerve-muscle receptor work better, such as pyridostigmine. This starts working within minutes. The second is treatments to get rid of the antibodies attacking the receptor. Plasmapheresis, the physical removal of antibodies, takes a few days to start working; intravenous immune globulin takes a week or two to work. It’s not clear exactly how these work in MG. The third type, antiimmune system drugs, take much longer: a few weeks for prednisone but several months at least for others, such as cyclosporine and mycophenolate. Your friend is in a period where many of the treatments have not had time to work yet, and I expect that she will get better as the treatments take hold. Her doctors may be talking to her about removing the thymus, but she needs to be well controlled before surgery. Some experts use plasmapheresis or immune globulin to get good control quickly before surgery, especially in people whose symptoms involve eating and facial functions. Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment. In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The fingerprints of a koala are so indistinguishable from humans that they have occasionally been confused at a crime scene.

Around 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4 percent of the population, are living with diabetes, with about 1.5 million more being diagnosed every year. The longer someone has diabetes, the greater his or her chances are of developing diabetic retinopathy, or damage to the blood vessels in the retina. According to the National Eye Institute, between 40 and 45 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy. While being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle are certainly linked to diabetes, social and environmental factors such as poverty, stress, and lack of safe housing and access to a healthy diet can also compromise your health and ultimately contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, addressing these social determinants of health has become a top priority for Medicaid programs. “We encourage our members with diabetes to have regular eye exams to rule out complications,” said Dr. Andrea Gelzer, senior vice president of medical affairs at AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need. “We educate our members so they understand that living a healthy lifestyle, controlling their blood sugar and having regular eye exams can help save their vision.” Simple steps can help mitigate the effects of diabetes and may potentially delay complications from diabetic eye disease, including controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure, monitoring your cholesterol, seeing your doctor regularly, and having a dilated eye exam at least once per year—or more if recommended by your eye care professional. AmeriHealth Caritas is part of the Independence Health Group in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and one of the nation’s leaders in health care solutions for those most in need. The Gospel Corner The Best Investment

Robert L. Schmitt “Bob” May 2, 2021 Bloomfield: At age 84, Robert passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 2nd, 2021 at the MM Ewing Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua. He was born in Rochester, NY to the late Arthur and Irene Schmitt. Survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Theresa Schmitt; his children, Marlene ( James) Leuenberger, Lorraine Schmitt, Paul (Stacy) Schmitt, Carolyn (Charles) Roth; his sister, Evelyn Branch; and his grandchildren, Jamie Leuenberger, Elise Leuenberger, Kevin Schmitt, Kyle Schmitt, Charles Roth, Benjamin Roth and Andrew Roth; along with his nieces, Barbara Branch and Eileen (Craig) Robillard. Bob was an avid outdoorsman; he loved to hunt and fish and would even bring the outdoors inside with him to practice his woodworking talent. As much as he loved the outdoors, his greatest love was spending time with his family. Bob will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will take place at 10AM on Monday, May 10, 2021 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 8624 Main Street in Honeoye. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Ontario ARC, 3071 County Complex Dr., Canandaigua, NY 14424.

Looking for a good and needful investment with high yields? Well, you’ve come to the right place! All you have to do is realize that you are in debt and on your way to bankruptcy. The Bible says in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Your debt with God is sin, your bankruptcy is death, and your investment can be eternal life. You ask, “How do I get in on this investment?” All you have to do is repent of your sin and accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. You say, “Is it that simple?” Yes, it is! the Bible says in Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead thou shalt be saved.” If you will repent of your sin and accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you will get in on the greatest investment that this world has ever seen, for Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

PRAYER TO THE Blessed Virgin (Never known to fail.) Oh, most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none who can withstand your power. Holy Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us, who have recourse to Thee. (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this in your hands. (3 times). Say this prayer 3 days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. Thank you Virgin Mary for answering my prayers. P.G.

GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT VOLUNTEERING Volunteering benefits people of all ages, but can be especially beneficial to children. Studies have indicated that teenagers who volunteer are less likely to become pregnant or use drugs. In addition, in a review of 60 studies on child engagement, Child Trends found that children who participate in civic engagement programs are likely to be more involved in school, to graduate from high school and to hold more positive civic attitudes than those who do not get involved in such programs. Getting kids to volunteer as they progress through adolescence may not be so difficult. In its 2014 analysis of volunteering trends, Child Trends found that 39 percent of twelfth grade students volunteered at least once a month in 2014 compared to just 27 percent of eighth graders. Older students might feel compelled to volunteer to improve their college admissions applications, but parents can take steps to get their younger children excited at the prospect of volunteering. Set a positive example. Young children want to emulate their parents, so moms and dads who volunteer may find ready and willing partners in their children. Parents can inform their children when they volunteer and why they do so before bringing kids along to join them. Don’t forget fun. Young children may be more likely to embrace volunteering if the activity is fun. Kids might not find it too fun to sit next to their parents while mom and dad balance a soup kitchen’s books, but a beach cleanup excursion or a trip to refurbish an inner city park may inspire kids to spend a lifetime giving back to their communities and helping the less fortunate. Keep it simple. Kids may not enjoy volunteering activities that consume too much time or make them feel exhausted. As kids grow older, parents can encourage them to embrace more challenging activities and/or commit more time to volunteering. But keep things simple with especially young children or older children who have never before volunteered. Try and try again. It might take some trial and error before parents find volunteering opportunities their children truly enjoy. When volunteering with children for the first time, be careful not to commit to more than one day. If children enjoy themselves, then parents can commit more time. If kids do not seem excited by an activity, parents won’t feel guilty or let the charity down by not returning. Children can benefit greatly by volunteering, and parents can get their youngsters involved at an early age.

MOMENTS IN TIME * On May 11, 1987, Klaus Barbie, the former Nazi Gestapo chief of German-occupied Lyon, France, during World War II, goes on trial, charged with 177 crimes against humanity. Barbie sent 7,500 French Jews and French Resistance partisans to concentration camps and executed some 4,000 others. (The History Channel)
