Colors on opposite ends of the color wheel will always complement each other. Green paired with pink (a lighter shade of green’s opposite, red) calls to mind the great outdoors. These hues can add a touch of floral spring sunshine even when that season has long since passed. Opt for a deep green and a carnation pink for maximum impact. And don’t forget a vase full of fresh blooms as the finishing factor.

FRESHEN UP YOUR HOM E FOR THE SPRING SEASON Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blow ing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours.

TYPES OF FIREPITS FOR YOUR BACKYARD OASIS Gas firepit: Gas firepits are touted for their convenience, as they don’t require homeowners to carry wood and build fires. Upon being connected to a gas source, gas firepits provide fire at the click of a switch. Gas firepits are also appreciated for their safety, as there is little or no risk that flames from gas firepits will grow too large and become difficult to control.

PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE Lack of sunlight: All plants need the proper ratio of sunlight to grow. Too much sunlight and plant blades can scorch. Too little sunlight and grass may turn brown and die. Although there are shade-tolerant varieties of grass, homeowners also can explore alternative landscapes. Work in a garden bed or create a design that utilizes gravel or mulch. Avoid aggressively pruning back trees to give the lawn more sunlight in that area, as this may just damage the trees.

DRAFTY WINDOWS ARE AN ISSUE Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable.

Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Celebrate National Dairy Month with Monroe County Dairy Princess Abby Rouland! BY KIM ROULAND, Edited

J

une is National Dairy Month! Dairy farmers across New York work hard each and every day to bring dairy foods to your table. They care for their cows, are stewards of the land and natural resources, and take great pride in bringing milk, cheese, and other real milk favorites to supermarket shelves. Seventeen-year-old Abby Rouland is proud to be the 2021-2022 Monroe County Dairy Princess. What is a Dairy Princess? According to the American Dairy Association, Dairy Princesses “represent New York’s dairy farmers and serve as dairy industry ambassadors throughout the next year.” How does one become a Dairy Princess? It’s harder than you think! To become the year’s Dairy Princess, prospective princesses must meet certain requirements such as having a connection to the dairy industry, being between 15-24 years of age and unmarried with no children, compete in a pageant with judges, answer impromptu questions, give a speech, pass a product knowledge exam, and more. To this, they must still add communication skills, knowledge of the dairy industry, poise, and personality. The Dairy Princess program is made possible through the support of the American Dairy Association North East, The Local Planning and Management Association funded by Dairy Farmers Check Off Dollars. “It is an really honor to represent our dairy farmers,” said Abby Rouland. “They are essential to everyday life. They keep people nourished, provide for their animals in innovative ways, continue to preserve the land, and more. That is the message I enjoy communicating to consumers.” Abby Rouland has been in dairy promotion for seven years, owns her own herd of cattle, and shows her cows at the local, state and national level. “My sister started when she was little, and I have been following in her footsteps!” shared Abby. She is also a member of the Junior Dairy Leaders, 4-H, the New York Junior Holstein Association, the New York Ayrshire Club, and the Guernsey Breeders Association. Being a Dairy Princess also comes with several responsibilities. “We inform our communities about dairy farming, cow comfort, and environmental stewardship as well as the nutritional benefits of milk and milk products,” explained Abby. “We participate in school programs, Refuel events at which we hand out chocolate milk after games and races, farmer meetings, consumer outreach, and public relations. This helps us bridge the gap between dairy farmers and consumers.” Here is a recipe from your 2021-2022 Monroe County Dairy Princess, Abby Rouland, provided by American Dairy Association North East for savory rolls filled with nutritional dairy goodness. “Your Milk Comes from a Good Place.” Continue to support your local dairy farmers by enjoying a glass of cold milk with your meals and include delicious milk products in your favorite recipes. This message is brought to you by American Dairy Association North East and your local dairy farmers.

TRIPLE CHEESE VEGGIE ROLLS Makes 12 rolls Prep Time: 20 min. // Cook Time: 3 min. // Bake Time: 15 min.

Ingredients: • Nonstick cooking spray • 1 (13.8 ounce) tube refrigerated pizza dough • 3/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese • 1 cup Mozzarella cheese • 3/4 cup chopped bell pepper • 3/4 cup shredded Colby Jack cheese • 2 green onions, sliced • 6 large eggs • 1/3 cup sliced black olives • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper • Flour as needed

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a standard 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray; set aside. 2. Combine the cheeses in a large bowl; set aside. Whisk eggs with the salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Spray a medium nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Pour the eggs into the skillet and cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently until firm but still creamy, 3-5 minutes. 3. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to a 8”x12” rectangle, about 1/8” thick. Scatter the cheeses evenly over the surface of the dough, leaving 1/2” border around all edges. Spread the scrambled eggs evenly on top of the cheese. Scatter the bell pepper, green onions, and black olives over the eggs. 4. Roll up the dough very tightly from one long side. Brush water along the edge of the dough and pinch tightly to seal. Using a sharp serrated knife, cut the roll into 12 pieces, about an inch wide. Place the pieces, cut side up, in the prepared muffin cups. 5. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown. Cool the rolls in the pan on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Remove from the pan and cool on a rack for 5 minutes more before serving. Enjoy this article? S E V RA Thank you! We want to give a huge Thank You to the gentleman who paid for our meals at Jo Andy’s on May 25th. We sincerely appreciate your kindness and will do likewise in the near future. May God bless you for your generosity! What a trip! Last Wednesday evening, I was taking my dog for a walk near my home in Corfu. My dog suddenly pulled me, and I tripped over him to avoid stepping on him. I fell off the curb and into the street, severely breaking both my wrist and elbow. A very kind neighbor, who happened to be a nurse, was driving and saw me fall. She stopped, and after assessing the situation, called 911. Before I knew what was happening, more neighbors were there to help as well as the police and ambulance. Someone even took my dog home for me! It’s all pretty much a blur to me, but thank you so very much to all who came to my rescue!

Not a single thank you In response to a recent person looking for incontinence underwear: I did the best I could with what I no longer needed, and I dropped off perhaps a dozen packages to the site specified by the requester in phone calls, after driving dozens of miles in each direction. Later I called the intermediary who had actually posted the request to confirm that the person in need had received the items. Several calls and emails went out without a word in reply. I particularly urged several times that the ultimate recipient make sure they looked through all the open packages. Why? Because in one of the open packages I left an envelope inside with a $100 bill in it so the ultimate recipient could purchase more underwear. No answers at all. Not a single thank you. What to do? I live in a seniors apartment complex. We have a nosy, busybody who, if she hears something good or bad (but mostly the bad) can’t wait to spread it all over. That wouldn’t be so bad, but most of the time, what she is spreading is not true. She is just a mean and disgusting old biddy. What can be done with someone like this? Debt If you include the unfunded liabilities of medicare and social security, our national debt is over $100 trillion. How bad does it have to get before you agree social security, medicare, and medicaid (the biggest debt drivers) need to go away? Not cut, completely go away. Stop calling it “my social security.” It was never yours to begin with. Your grandparents survived just fine before Medicare/Medicaid. Nowhere in the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution does it guarantee any standard of living or any length of life. Raising prices! I understand that prices are going up at pretty much every restaurant you go to due to the economy, but can these restaurants please update their websites and let people know about the increase! I ordered a pizza special from a local place. It said one price online, but when I picked it up it was actually $10 more! I’m all about helping out our local businesses, but I wasn’t happy about paying so much more than I thought. I probably would have gone somewhere else had I known.

Commercial Lab Tests vs Genetic Counseling

• Covid 19 Safety Guidlines Followed Here!

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a daughter (almost 31 years) who is concerned about Charcot-MarieTooth syndrome. Her maternal grandmother has been diagnosed with that condition. She is interested in seeking out a genetic test for the condition to learn if she is susceptible. She was referred to a commercial, direct-to-consumer laboratory for the test. How likely is it that a lab test for this specific condition would be accurate? Should she be doing all of this through either a particular type of genetics counselor or her private physician (internist) rather than an independent effort? -- R.C. ANSWER: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is the eponym given to a family of hereditary motor sensory neuropathies: diseases that affect the nerves that carry the impulses necessary for movement and sensation. The initial symptoms are most commonly weakness and atrophy in the feet, followed by similar problems in the hands and sensory changes. The diagnosis may be made by EMG testing (electromyography, a needle study of the electrical activity of the muscles), but genetic testing is another way of making the diagnosis. If her grandmother has a known mutation, then genetic testing is likely to give her confirmation of her own status. Commercial genetic testing is certainly available, and probably accurate. However, I would still recommend a visit to a genetic counselor. This may require a referral from her primary-care doctor. The correct test to order, and its interpretation, depends on the exact diagnosis of her grandmother’s condition, since there are many genetic variations of Charcot-Marie-Tooth. It is likely that your daughter will have questions after the test results, and the benefit of having an experienced clinician there to answer them would be invaluable.

PRACTICAL GIFTS FOR RECENT GRADUATES Résumé service: In this competitive job market, individuals need to take advantage of every opportunity to stand out from the crowd. Résumé rules have changed, and graduates will be best served by companies that know the ins and outs of writing effective résumés. Employers often use digital scanning software to sift through applicants, so knowing which keywords and tags to use can ensure a résumé gets noticed. Costs can range from $100 to $200, depending on the services desired.

The Gospel Corner Secrets! Have you ever had a secret? Secrets are held by both God and man. God has secret things that belong only to Him. “The secret things belong unto the Lord our God; but those things which are revealed belong unto us.” Deut. 29:29 Man can hold secrets from other men, but NEVER from God. “Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord.” Jer. 23:24 Note the following secret things: 1. All secret things will one day be judged by Christ, “In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ.” Rom. 2:16 2. Sinful secrets need immediate cleansing. “Cleanse thou me from secret faults.” Psalm 19:12 3. Trying to hide sin from God is futile! Confess and forsake it! SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Fighting Back Against Rising Food Prices This week I scored a grocery discount of $5.21, plus over $6 in free groceries by using the store coupons. Added to that was $12 in free items I took to the local food bank. All of this is because I signed up for another grocery store’s customer loyalty card. It took a few weeks, but eventually the store’s computer figured out my favorite brands and items I routinely purchased, and turned those into discount coupons. It included free items to get me to sample different brands. And then there’s the food bank donation. It feels good, when you’re only a short step from needing that service yourself, to be able to give to those who have even less. The free items offered by the grocery store coupons can help beef up the supplies they have at the food bank, and in some cases might even be treats for those who can’t afford them. I thought about that when I grabbed the mega oversize candy bar offered with a free coupon: Somebody’s kids might not have had sweets in a very long time. And then there are our own pantries. For so long stores couldn’t get certain items. Once those were in stock again, some of us grabbed several extra, just in case. Now some of those items are once again not in stock, but for the most part they are. And now we have extra in our kitchen cabinets. It’s time to look at expiration dates and consider the reality: Will we really use up four boxes of pasta in the next month before they expire? If not, perhaps they could be donated to the food bank. If grocery prices are going to keep rising and rising, this is one way to fight back. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Fight Dander Allergies on Multiple Fronts

MONUMENTAL MEMORIES

Full range of cemetery memorials & services. Many granite stones, colors, shapes & engraving options on display. Friendly, caring & here to help! Proprietors: David & Kathy Cooper (585) 261-0012 5650 County Rd. #41, Farmington, NY 14425 Tues.-Sat. 10-5 or by appointment.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love my two fluffy cats, “Jake” and “Manny,” even though I am allergic to the dander in their fur. Antihistamines help, but not completely. Would an air purifier help keep the air clear? -Jemma G. in Kansas City, Missouri DEAR JEMMA: An allergy to pet dander can be tough to keep under control -- so much so that some pet owners give up their pets. I’m so glad you’ve kept your family together. Pet dander is generally underneath a dog or cat’s coat, near the skin. They shed fluffy bits of fur almost constantly, and dander is carried off with that fluff. Because dander can be tiny -- 75 microns or smaller, which isn’t visible to the naked eye -- it’s hard to isolate and get rid of. An air purifier may help, but only if it’s the right one to trap dander. Get an air purifier with a HEPA filter -- one that can be changed easily. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters trap particles as small as 0.5 microns. Avoid “ionizing” air purifiers as these don’t trap as many dander particles; plus they can be expensive. The size depends on how much of your home you’d like the air purifier to work in; for example, desktop-sized units have a range of less than 200 square feet, which makes them ideal for desks or next to your bed. No single strategy will reduce dander or other allergens. Tackle the issue from multiple angles. Dusting and vacuuming the house frequently can reduce dander, and brushing your cats’ hair daily will reduce extra shedding. If these activities trigger allergies, consider wearing a filter mask and goggles to hopefully reduce the reaction.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados may help fight depression. Avocados are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit the body in myriad ways. One of those ways is by helping to reduce the symptoms of depression. Polyunsaturated fats such as omega-3 fatty acids are thought to antagonize inflammatory cytokines that can contribute to feelings of depression.
