ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS
One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country.
Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone.
Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.
Yield: 10 cups
3 tablespoons melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
8 cups popped popcorn
1 cup dried apple chips, broken into large pieces
1/4 cup toffee bits
Heat oven to 300 F. Whisk melted butter with vanilla. Toss brown sugar with cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.
Toss popcorn with butter mixture. Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar mixture. Stir. Transfer to baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle apple chips and toffee bits over top. Bake 15 minutes, or until toffee bits start to melt. Cool before serving.
Tip: Add chopped pecans for extra crunch.

Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines.
Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.

Avoid electrical work. Complicated electrical work is best left to the
Estimates from the Electrical Safety Foundation International indicate that electrical malfunctions cause more than 50,000 house fires each year. Such malfunctions can occur for myriad reasons, and a lack of experience working with electrical circuits and breakers could make homes vulnerable to malfunctions and fires. It’s also worth noting that homeowners’ insurance policies may not cover damage caused by DIY electrical work. So at the very least homeowners should contact their insurance providers to determine if any accidents or injuries caused by DIY electrical work would be covered by their policies.

Creating And Growing Plants Worth Knowing
Q&A Master Gardeners with the
My neighbors have been doing a No Mow May and I’m worried about ticks. What can I do to protect my lawn and gardens fromticks?
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
Embracing a change in mowing habits throughout the year, rather than just in May, can have a multitude of benefits for your landscape. By allowing your lawn to grow to a height of 4 inches before mowing, you create an environment that isconducivetothesurvivalandflourishing of beneficial insects. These insects play a crucial role in pollination, pest control, and overall ecosystem health. When you mow at a higher height, you provide shelter and food sources for beneficial insects such as bees, butterflies, and ladybugs. These insects contribute to the pollination process, ensuring the reproduction of plants and the production of fruits and vegetables. Additionally, theyactasnaturalpredators, keeping pest populations in check and reducing the need for harmful pesticides. While your neighbors embrace the No Mow May movement, it is still essential to ensure the protection of your lawn and gardens against the threat of ticks. Maintain regular lawn mowing practices, diligently remove leaf litter and brush piles, and utilize effective tick repellents.
e
Additionally, establish barriers between your outdoor spaces and potential tick habitats. Remember to don protective clothing and apply insect repellents whenever venturing outdoors. By implementing these precautions, you can effectively minimize the risk of ticks while respecting your neighbors’ commitment to No Mow May.
Furthermore, with every choice we make to be sustainable there are trade off. I believe this change in mowing habits promotes healthier soil and reduces the need for excessive watering and fertilizers. Longer grass helps to retain moisture, reducing water runoff
andpromotingwaterconservation.Italso encouragesdeeperrootgrowth, resulting in a more resilient and drought-tolerant lawn. Keeping your grass at 4” doesn’t promote ticks as they prefer un-mowed grass.
So,by extending your mowing practices beyond May and maintaining a higher grass height of 4 inches, you not only create a welcoming habitat for beneficial insects but also contribute to a healthier and more sustainable landscape overall without increasing the tick population.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS
Roller coasters are a staple of amusement parks, and even though the first patent for a roller coaster was issued to LaMarcus Thompson in 1885, it’s believed modern roller coasters descended from winter sled rides made popular in the 17th century in St. Petersburg, Russia. Called “Russian Mountains,” these thrill rides took place on icy hills that may have reached as high as 200 feet in the air.

DID YOU KNOW? Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer to affect the endocrine system. While many cancers have decreased in prevalence, ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc. indicates incidence rates for thyroid cancer have increased in recent years. The American Cancer Society expects thyroid cancer deaths to increase to 2,200 in 2021 out of an estimated 44,280 people affected by thyroid cancer. Unlike most other adult cancers, thyroid cancer is commonly diagnosed at a younger age. Women are three times more likely to develop thyroid cancer than men. Thyroid cancer is largely treatable, most notably with the removal of a portion of the gland or the entire thyroid gland depending on cancer stage. People who have had their thyroids removed (thyroidectomy) will need to take daily thyroid hormone pills.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Does Intermittent Fasting Raise the Risk Of Heart Disease?
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a recent headline that said people who fast intermittently have an increased risk of heart disease. Is there merit to this story? -- K.O.S.
ANSWER: Intermittent fasting is an increasingly common weight-loss strategy. The two most common approaches of intermittent fasting are alternate-day fasting (eating nothing one day, then whatever you want the next) and timerestricted feeding (eating at certain times throughout the day, usually during an eight-hour time frame).
The published data on the benefits of these diets show short-term weight loss (i.e., 12 weeks), but no long-term weight loss (1 year), compared to the standard dietary advice.
There is evidence of potential harm from intermittent fasting. Studies have shown an increased risk of eating disorders (particularly binge eating). One study showed that disordered eating worsened in those assigned to an intermittent-fasting schedule. However, other studies do not show this.
The concern for disordered eating is highest among younger and female populations, who are at the most risk for eating disorders, and I advise against intermittent fasting for a person with a history of an eating disorder.
The study you read about was presented as an abstract in the March meeting of the American Heart Association; it is not yet published or peer-reviewed. But it did show that people who report an intermittent-fasting diet (specifically those who ate over an 8-hour time frame) were at a higher risk for death from heart disease than those who ate over a 12-16 hour time frame.
However, this wasn’t a controlled study, and it is likely that people who chose a time-restricted eating pattern already had issues that put them at a higher risk for heart disease. Still, given the absence of long-term benefits, I don’t generally recommend a time-restricted diet or intermittent fasting to my patients.
My colleagues in weight medicine consider intermittent fasting to be an option that helps a subset of people. There are some people who do benefit from this type of diet, and as long as they are eating well and are being monitored by their physician, they should continue to follow their diet if it is working for them.

Protect Your Mobile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) Mobile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disconcerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012.
When a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to more than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity.
The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. While identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like going through trash and stealing wallets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

Joanne Heveron: A Heart for Thrifting and Community in Canandaigua
BY SUZIE WELLS
Newark-native and 20-year Canandaigua resident, Joanne Heveron, loved thri ing and garage saling with her mother. When she’d host garage sales herself, Joanne says they turned into fundraisers for various organizations and deserving individuals, o en focusing on suicide prevention efforts that were close to her heart. Over the months and years, she realized she needed to expand, to take sales to a brick-and-mortar space.
In 2016, with a degree in human services and experience mostly in retail and a few care positions over the years, Joanne learned business skills on the go as she started the nonprofit donation-based thri shop, Finger Lakes Treasure Trove on South Main Street in downtown Canandaigua. She worked with a mentor through the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce’s business mentor program. She started her business “backwards,” without a budget or business plan, cra ing those as she got started, but always with the mission to help the community.
She says, she knew “It’s gonna work because it needs to be done. Closing/Failing is not even an option. We have to make it work. Looking back, it was a crazy idea [how it got started]. It shouldn’t have worked. But we got in the door, with such a fantastic landlord, and the people, our customers kept us going.”
A survivor of suicide loss herself, Joanne says suicide prevention is such a serious topic that needs to be talked about, but other larger organizations address the epidemic. At FLTreasure Trove, Joanne aims to bring people in for the fun things, the light-hearted human interest, interactive, fun things, such as Shark Week, Dino Day, World Gorilla Day.
Joanne loves getting “so ridiculously excited about sharks, people sometimes come in just to see [her] passion” and to learn more. She says the store gives her an outlet to share her passion about bees and sharks and bats and such. is way, her store can be a “positive outlet for people” in the community instead of just talking negatively about suicide.
With a staff of three and another three amazing volunteers doing the job of what should be about 20 people, Joanne says Treasure Trove is more than a thri shop. “It’s an atmosphere,” Joanne says, with an attitude of “If you’re not having fun, go home.” Donation intake, item pricing, store tidying, and customer serving take a lot of energy, but every time a customer expresses gratitude for the shop and what they do, Joanne says any doubts disappear.
his natural first choice. at sort of interaction brings joy to Joanne’s heart and inspires her to keep doing what she’s doing.
Collaborating with local organizations to provide free clothing, collecting cat food and donations for a local feral cat program, and supporting CareNet Pregnancy Center are just a few organizations FL Treasure Trove collaborates with. Joanne raves about their increasing connection with Canandaigua’s own Paula Hicks, a one-woman army connecting people in need with people, organizations, and services that can help. And a Treasure Trove volunteer works at Canandaigua Schools, so the nonprofit collects school supplies and backpacks for kids there every year.
Joanne says, “It’s amazing how the lines of communication are not really very open,” so just talking with community organizations and individuals helps everyone. Her organization collaborates with any organizations who need help, and for their open heart, Finger Lakes Treasure Trove won e Daily Messenger’s Best Not-for-profit Organization title in 2023. Joanne says when a customer came in and told her those results, she was so shocked and so happy.
Joanne is thankful for her amazing landlord, who is always responsive to concerns, and who waived their rent for the two months they had to close for COVID. “A good landlord is hard to find. If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be here still.”
Joanne also gives a shout out to Stefanie Allison, an amazing local artist who paints the front window with seasonal themes, but always incorporating sharks. Joanne says it makes her smile when people direct others to “the shark store.”
ank you, Joanne, and the FLTT team for the incredible resource thatisFingerLakesTreasureTrove.Communitysupportingcommunity helps make the world brighter. “When you donate to Treasure Trove, you help keep items out of landfills and you help your neighbors. When you thri at Treasure Trove, you save money and you help your community.”
Treasure Trove is a place where community members feel comfortable and safe, and Joanne particularly reminisces about a young boy with a stutter who came into the shop to practice talking with people. She remembers him telling his mom FLTT is the place he feels most comfortable in, so chatting with Joanne and others there was

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES
Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

Here’s A Tip
• Use a bandanna to strain coffee if you've accidentally had a filter bust. It works. I first used this tip when camping, but I have used it at home, too. e coffee goes through it faster than a paper filter, which is fine when it's already brewed, since you lose less heat. T.R. in Arkansas
• Recycling notes: Cardboard that's greasy or foodcaked is just not recyclable. It's trash. On the plus side, your glass jars don't have to be perfectly clean, nor your cans crushed, in order to take them to the recycling center or drop curbside if your community has a plan in place.

Home Safe
On June 5, 2024, our dog went missing. I immediately shared the news on Facebook and contacted the Hamlin Dog Shelter. Soon after, a neighbor relayed that her friend had spotted a couple with a brown dog on the parkway. During our search, the Hamlin Dog Control Office informed us that they had found her, and she was safe at the shelter. The couple had notified law enforcement who stayed with our dog until Dog Control Officer Dave Maynard could pick her up. We were lucky in this situation and are deeply grateful to the observant passerby on the parkway, our caring neighbors, the couple who looked after her, the police, and Dave Maynard for their part in bringing our dog back to us. The closeknit nature of a small town certainly has its benefits. A sincere THANK YOU to all who were involved.
VENT BRIGHTER
To my neighbor who cut down the linden tree I loved the linden tree you cut down. Its leaves filled our windows. Its blossoms scented our house and yes, its leaves fell into our yard and its sap left drops on the car, but I didn’t care. I loved its shade and watched eastern bluebirds and robins and woodpeckers in that tree. I am heartbroken and will grieve its loss a very long time. I will also transplant one of its seedlings from my flower bed and hope I live long enough to see it grow into a tree half as big as the one you destroyed. Trees are a gift, especially as summers grow hotter. I would gladly have raked its leaves for you if that was the reason. All you had to do was ask. But people here rarely talk with one another. We may be neighbors but no one is very neighborly and while you think something on your property is yours alone, know that your tree was also my tree and that what you do affects our entire community. Let’s please do a better job of being neighbors to all the living things we are lucky enough to live with.
Working disabled
Several times I saw a person with a department store blue uniform/vest going into work. They parked in the closest handicap spot. This person had no wheelchair, no cane and seemed to walk just fine. I have to wonder how he’s able to work yet can’t walk into work unless using the closest spot. I’m so tired of people with all these handicap tags abusing the system. I SAW THE PERSON INSIDE WALKING around. How many hours is this spot going to be taken when others who truly need it don’t have it available? Another problem is people sitting in the handicap spot waiting for people. A suggestion would be dropping them off by the door and then sitting in front of the store. If you’re in your vehicle you’re not going to get a ticket. There’s not enough handicap spots for the people who abuse them and the people who truly need them.

DID YOU KNOW?
Though office work might not be the first profession individuals think of in relation to elevating one’s cancer risk, sitting at a desk for most of the day can increase a person’s risk for cancer. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, sitting for most of the day without engaging in physical activity puts individuals at increased risk for cancer. How much extra risk does that entail? Though no two individuals are the same, studies have equated sitting for eight hours a day without any physical activity to the risk posed by obesity and smoking. The DFCI notes that sitting over long periods of time has been known to cause increased blood pressure, high cholesterol and excess body fat around the waist, each of which have been identified as factors that increase a person’s risk for cancer.

Time for summer fun with your dog
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dad finally let us adopt a puppy a few months ago, and I can’t wait for summer vacation, when I can spend all day with him! He’s got lots of energy, but we’ve been training him to follow commands so he doesn’t run off. What are some outside games that I can play with him? -- Kerry B., Winchester, Virginia
DEAR KERRY: You’re going to have a wonderful summer! It sounds like you and your family have been diligent about training your dog in basic obedience so that he’ll come back to you on command, sit and stay in place. And he’ll be old enough -- and have his most important vaccinations out of the way -- to stay healthy outside or when encountering other dogs.
Here’s a few great off-leash games to play:
Fetch: e gold standard game for dogs remains a favorite. Just grab a tennis ball and toss it.
Frisbee: Energetic dogs can chase these flying discs all day.
Agility training: Start with simple tasks like going under or over obstacles.
Swimming: Fill a kiddie pool in the backyard and let your dog splash around on a hot day.
Tracking: Have your dog follow a line of treats to a “jackpot” (a toy or food). Extend the distance between treats each session.
Remember, only take your dog off leash in a safe area or approved offleash location. A fenced-in backyard is ideal, but if you don’t have one of those, go to a dog park or municipal, state or federal park that has an off-leash area. Some of these games, like agility and tracking, can be done on-leash. Most importantly, have fun!
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.
