HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, there are a few things about your home that really annoy you. Fortunately, ingenious solutions are available for four of the most common pet peeves when it comes to lighting and electronics: 1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection. 4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights. Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics. While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features. ●

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC

PAINTING/PAPERING

Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

TELLING SIGNS COMMON INSECTS ARE INFESTING A LAWN Cutworms: The lawn care experts at Scotts® note that cutworms are moth larvae that hide in the thatch layer of a lawn during the day before emerging at night to feed on grass blades. Patches of brown grass between one and two inches in width is a sign of cutworm infestation. Homeowners who notice a growing number of birds pecking away in their lawns may have a cutworm infestation, which can be confirmed by peeling up a section of damaged grass and looking for cutworms, which are brown, gray or black and tend to be around two inches long.

One tool we can utilize is traps as a deterrent. The first one is to use burlap folded over and secured to the

tree to create an open suitcase or upsidedown V with the burlap. The caterpillars climb up the tree into the V suitcase and stop because they typically are not smart enough to crawl down the V and up again on the outside. We can then monitor and dispose of any found caterpillars in the trap. Another method is to use duct tape and to trap the caterpillars. You use the

tape to create a wide band around the tree and then create the V with the sticky side of the tape exposed so the caterpillars become stuck.

The Blessing Room in Bloomfield Praises Local Farms BY AMANDA DUDEK

J

une is Dairy Month and an excellent opportunity to celebrate local agriculture and the many exceptional farm families who are our friends and neighbors. With local farms come many benefits, not the least of which is the well-known generosity of farm families, reducing food insecurity within their surrounding communities. Barbara (Barb) Blazek, Director of The Blessing Room Food Pantry, a Foodlink affiliate in Bloomfield shares the food pantry’s gratitude to these generous farmers. “Although we are a Foodlink affiliate, and Foodlink is our primary food provider, we are blessed to be in a more rural community like Bloomfield where there are several farmers,” said Barb. In 2021, the Ontario County Farm Bureau and the 2021 Ontario County Dairy Princess partnered with The Blessing Room to bring milk to families in need. “The 2021 Ontario County Dairy Princess was a Bloomfield High School student, and she did some of her service work volunteering at the pantry with us,” Barb recalled. “She just thought it was a great idea. They held a challenge to raise money for our us. That money enabled us to buy butter for the holidays, which was huge. Our clients love butter, especially at Christmastime when they do a lot of baking. It also allowed us to buy milk, which is a wonderful thing.” This generosity is often echoed by others in the agricultural community. “Several farmers help us by donating food to us,” said Barb. “For example, Wild Hill Farm is an organic farm and a CSA, I believe. After they grow their food and their members come and pick it up, they call us to pick up what is left, donating it to us. Very soon, I expect they will call again, and we will have fresh produce to offer our clientele.”

local farmers often provide the more fragile produce—leaf lettuce, Swiss chard, tomatoes, tomatillos—that are best eaten as close to when they are picked as possible so that they better maintain their nutrients.

Barb, who comes from a long line of Wisconsin dairy farmers, understands that farm families face lot of challenges. She would like to see them receive appreciation for all that they do. “I don’t think farm families get enough love,” Barb shared that The Blessing Room frequently purchases butter from a local she said. “Bloomfield is the most generous community, both farmers and all farm in Mendon during the holiday season when the pantry is in need of more our neighbors.” butter. “This farm market in Mendon sells us butter that is made by local farmers,” said Barb. affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism. ●

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles A Trip to the Museum A local art museum, lacking many patrons because people are still avoiding crowds due to COVID, came up with a great idea: open the place to seniors. Those of us who’ve been locked down for too long, turning up our noses at proposed activities at the senior center, thought this was a swell idea. We did, however, decline the offer of a van. Instead, we all drove in our individual vehicles to avoid being breathed on by others. The museum was ... lovely. So excited was staff to have real and actual patrons that they pulled out all the stops for us. Young docents-in-training hovered, but not too closely, as we spread out in the large, high-ceilinged rooms clutching our brochures. Spend more than 10 seconds in front of a display of Mediterranean antiquities, and a docent would appear, many steps away, to tell us about the artifacts. Squint at the detail of a Winslow Homer painting, and there would be a docent offering a magnifying glass and talking about brush work. Look at the artistry of the Native American baskets and wonder how they got all those varied colors, and a docent would know. It didn’t hurt our feelings at all to be told later that these docents-in-training were students at a local art school and would get extra credit for their participation. They did a fine job. The senior center staff did too, surprising us with a bagged lunch on the museum grounds after our visit. There were enough picnic benches for us to spread out in the sunshine, and a male spouse was commandeered to tote around a cooler of iced drinks to hand out, along with a wide variety of chips for us to trade like school children. It’s a good thing I had my checkbook in my purse. Before I left, I purchased a membership as a Friend of the Museum. I’ll be back. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save the peels from your oranges, and dry them at a low temperature in the oven. You can add them to a pot of coffee or tea for a flavor boost that is refreshing and delicious. * “If your tomato garden is experiencing caterpillars, try planting dillweed close to your tomatoes. It can provide a diversion, allowing your tomatoes to grow pest-free!” -- Y.F. in Florida

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Pet’s First Visit to the Veterinarian DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m planning to adopt a cat soon. This is my first pet, and I’m looking forward to caring for it. The local shelter gave me a few instructions to follow, pre-adoption, including making an appointment for a veterinary checkup. Is there anything I should know about my cat’s first vet visit? -- Kara L., Buffalo, N.Y. DEAR KARA: Congratulations on deciding to accept a cat into your life! It will be a rewarding experience. I’m also glad that you’re doing your homework ahead of time to give your cat the best start on a new life. Here are a few tips that will help with your first veterinary visit: * Research local clinics ahead of time. Is there one that specializes in cats? * Purchase a cat carrier that best fits your cat (in terms of size, not decor). This will make transporting the cat from the shelter and to and from the vet much easier and safer. * Keep all paperwork from the shelter in a folder and bring it with you. * You should be able to be present during the exam. It’s a great time to ask questions about caring for your cat. Be ready to take notes. * Listen to the vet as he or she gives you information about your cat’s general health. Vets or their assistants often talk to you throughout the process, telling you what they’re checking for and the result. * Follow the vet’s instructions. If a follow-up visit or more tests are needed, make sure you do it. Write down special instructions like how much and what type of food to feed your cat, or instructions on giving medication. And don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you don’t understand something. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. Spring Rummage Sale

* “Cure your color in new garments (especially dark- or bright-colored) by soaking the item in cold, salty water before washing. Make sure that the fabric will allow this! * “Take good care of quality paint brushes, and they will take care of you! Wash thoroughly in soapy water and rinse very well. After the brush is washed, combine enough water to cover the bristles and add two tablespoons of fabric softener. Swish for a minute or two, being sure to get it in the brush good, then hang to drip dry. Before you use the brush to paint, simply rinse the fabric softener away.” -- M.E. in Washington * Baking soda can be used as a tooth scrub. It’s particularly effective against stains, as it is a mild abrasive. * “When you are dusting, don’t forget the light bulbs. Dusty light bulbs can contribute to less-bright lighting and can shorten the life of your bulbs. Turn lights off when you are not using them. You will save electricity that way.” -- A.L. in Oklahoma

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Commuting is a part of daily life for many working professionals. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey, the average American spends 25 minutes commuting to work each day. However, Citi’s 2015 ThankYou Premier Commuter Index says the average commute time in the United States is 45 minutes. The reasons for that disparity are unknown, though if one accepts the latter statistic as more accurate than the yearsold Census Bureau data, it’s fair to say Americans spend far more time getting to work than their neighbors to the north. But commutes in Canada also can be lengthy, as Canada’s National Household Survey found that, in 2011, commuters in Canada spent an average of roughly 25 minutes traveling to work each day. While many people enjoy their daily commutes, feeling it’s a time to prepare for the day ahead and, if using public transportation, to relax and let someone else do the work, it’s fair to say the majority of commuters would like to spend less time getting to and from work. Many would also like to spend less money getting to and from their offices, and finding ways to conserve fuel is an effective way to do just that.

REALITY OF SALVATION

As I read scripture I see a huge difference in what the CHURCH has become today, and what it should be. Where’s the reality? It should be evident in at least 3 areas of our lives. 1 – OUR WALK – 1 John 1:6 “If we say that we have fellowship with HIM, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not the truth.” – Your walk talks louder than your talk talks. 2 – AN OVERCOMING LIFE – 1 John 5:4 “For whatsoever is BORN OF GOD overcometh the world, and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our FAITH” – It looks like too many are overcome! 3 – WITNESS OF THE SPIRIT – 1 John 5:10 “He that believeth on the SON, hath the witness in himself.” ADVISE: Be sure you have the REAL SALVATION!

FACTORS THAT CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT MOOD Hunger: affects certain individuals’ moods during winter, when hours of sunlight are fewer than during spring, summer and fall and when temperatures outside can sometimes be so cold as to keep people indoors for extended periods of time. In addition, a 2013 study published in the journal Social Indicators Research found that individuals report greater life satisfaction on exceptionally sunny days than they did on days with ordinary weather.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Maintain your beard. The beard boom continues, but men who want to look sharp and well-groomed should make an effort to trim any wild facial hair they may have. Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.

DID YOU KNOW?

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

CPAP Machine Can Help With Sleep Apnea

Instances of early-onset dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in individuals under the age of 65 are on the rise. According to the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Health IndexSM, roughly 131,000 commercially insured Americans between the ages of 30 and 64 were diagnosed with early-onset dementia or Alzheimer’s disease in 2017. That marks a 200 percent increase since 2013. Diagnosis rates among individuals between the ages of 45 and 54 were especially high in 2017 compared to 2013. Within that age group in 2013, 2.7 out of every 100,000 people were diagnosed with early-onset dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. That number rose to 10.9 out of every 100,000 people in 2017, marking a 311 percent increase in just four years.

Remember the Sounds...

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: How are sleep apnea, sighing and heart failure related? Recently, I was told that I have severe sleep apnea and that I must use a CPAP machine. I have noticed that during the day I frequently take a spontaneous deep breath. Is that sleep apnea while awake? I have coronary heart disease and have three stents. Will the CPAP machine help me in any way? -- A.P. ANSWER: It’s complicated. By far, the most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens in people who are overweight, or in people whose neck anatomy predisposes them to the condition. During sleep, the upper airway collapses, preventing proper inspiration. This can be noticed by a sleep partner as choking, gasping or just not breathing for a prolonged time. The person eventually will wake up enough, due to lack of oxygen, to be able to take in a good breath, but will then fall back asleep. The process may happen hundreds of times a night, with the person often unaware. Sleepiness during the day (from never sleeping properly at night) and snoring are the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), which uses high pressure to keep the airway open, is the most common initial treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. In severe sleep apnea, the oxygen level in the blood can be so low for so long that the heart and lungs can be damaged, eventually leading to a type of heart failure of the right side of the heart. However, the situation is even more complex. People who have other kinds of heart failure, such as from repeated heart attacks, can develop the less common form of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea. Although this also may be treated by CPAP, it is critical to treat the underlying heart failure as well. Your doctor can tell you whether you have central or obstructive sleep apnea. Spontaneous deep breaths, sighs, are a part of normal human physiology. Sighs have several purposes, but the most important is to help keep the lungs properly expanded. Sighs might be more common in people with heart failure, but I do not know of any correlation with sleep apnea. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Adults should drink betw een four and six glasses of w ater per day. • Exercise. Regular exercise benefits various parts of the hum an body, including the kidneys. High blood pressure and diabetes are tw o of the biggest risk factors for kidney disease, and regular exercise can reduce a person’s risk of both conditions. How ever, overexertion can strain the kidneys, so avoid going too hard. • Speak w ith a physician before taking vitamin supplements or herbal remedies. Excessive supplem entation can harm the kidneys. Discuss any supplem ents or herbals rem edies w ith a physician before taking them . • Quit smoking. Sm oking decreases the blood flow in the kidneys, decreasing their ability to function at optim al capacity. Sm oking also increases a person’s risk of high blood pressure and cancer of the kidneys. • Eat healthy. A healthy diet decreases a person’s risk for high blood pressure and diabetes. Adhering to a healthy diet and controlling portion sizes can help control w eight and blood pressure and contribute to healthy kidneys as w ell. • Get screened. Adults w ho have been diagnosed w ith high blood pressure or diabetes should m ake sure their physicians screen for kidney dysfunction during routine appointm ents. Page 26

Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

Teamwork After last Saturday’s event involving farm equipment and electric lines (and cable lines and telephone lines) in Oakfield, I wanted to put in a good word about how all the agencies involved worked diligently together for safety, protection, and repair during this incident. Although our services were off for a bit, the agencies involved responded quickly and efficiently. Having a bird’s eye view of this provided first-hand knowledge of all that was involved and the extent it took to repair and return full service to the residents of Oakfield. In present times, it is hard to justify the rising cost of just about everything, but to witness the manpower, the equipment involved, and to see how these people worked together as a well-oiled machine, (and it is dangerous work), I can understand where at least some of the money goes when paying for these services. So, I would like to say thank you again [to these people] for all they do. Lab Visit I just went to get my blood work done. I have bad veins and am always nervous when I have to get blood drawn. I love going to [local] labs because they cater to my individual needs and always do a good job. This time I got [name]. She had a beautiful personality. Although she had trouble getting my blood to go in the syringe, she [did] get the job done. She had to stick me twice. I always tell people that they get just one chance with me. After she had trouble with the initial stick, I told her that I would come back. For her to talk me into [trying] again was, in itself, a miracle...I want to thank her for getting me through the process. Hats off to her. See you [again next time]. Helpful Staff Thanks to Avon Officer Hall and the Landpro driver who each stopped to see if we needed help after driving over an object that left a gash in our tire.

Loud Obnoxious Neighbor! I’ve enjoyed my porch for 20 years. Four years ago, enter my new neighbor’s wife, who seems to enjoy screaming every sentence that comes to mind, including yelling at her 2 year old and yelling into the telephone like it was two tin cans connected by a string. Guess what? Your neighbors don’t want to hear it. I no longer enjoy sitting on my porch as I can’t stand the constant yelling that has replaced the birds chirping.

The Least Intelligent Recently, we heard of another mass shooting. This shooting was caused by what I consider the least intelligent type of person. That is, those who are prejudicial. Prejudicial people seem to believe that they had a choice in who their birth parents were. If people had that ability, then everyone would probably be wealthy and belong to a loving family, the same race, gender, and ethnic background. We would be so much alike that nobody would be able to tell us apart. That is not the case, and any intelligent person knows that. I thank God for our differences because it is those differences that make life more interesting. Lazy Jogging Pet Owner I was standing at the front door and checking out the start to a beautiful Sunday when I saw a woman jogging with her white dog through my front yard. I didn’t mind until the dog stopped for a bathroom break and proceeded to poop on my front lawn. I opened the door and made eye contact with the woman. She started pulling her dog and jogging away. Seriously, carry dog poop bags and clean up after your pet! It’s just rude, and I would have given you a bag! Busted To the couple who swiped my geraniums off my porch Saturday night: you’re on video! Enjoy my Mother’s Day flowers from my kids.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.
