STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Sigurd the Mighty, a ninth-century Norse earl of Orkney, was killed by an enemy he had beheaded several hours earlier. He’d tied the man’s head to his horse’s saddle, but while riding home one of its protruding teeth grazed his leg, causing an infection from which the unlucky Sigurd died.

POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced.

DOG-RELATED LAWN DAMAGE Dogs love spending time outdoors. Dog owners with yards know that dogs benefit greatly from some exercise in the backyard. While that time might be great for dogs, it can take its toll on lawns.
O’Neill’s
Tree Service
Dog urine and feces can adversely affect the look and health of a lush green lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advices to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns.

In addition to urine damage, dogs can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident until spring, and get into areas like gardens where they wreak additional havoc.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! REAL ESTATE

Remember the Sounds...
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Patient History More Than Just Medical Facts
Reclaim your ability to enjoy every moment with the latest hearing aid technology.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 77 years old. When I go to a new doctor, there is always that past history form to fill out. I know to include current medications, including OTC and allergies, but how far back should I go? Should I include the tonsillectomy when I was in grade school (I don’t recall how old I was)? Or the surgery to remove a benign tumor from my right femur in 1955? The miscarriage in 1961? Or that the last of my five children was born over 40 years ago? I would include the surgery because my right leg is about 3/4 inch shorter than my left. After all these years, it causes a backache after standing too long. -- S.B. ANSWER: In general, doctors want all the information you can give. However, past medical history tends to become less important as people get older. I agree with you that the surgery on your femur is important: Even now, a leglength discrepancy may still benefit from being addressed. A small (half the discrepancy or less) adjustment to the shoe of your shorter right leg may help reduce your backache. If I were your new doctor, it would be important to me to know you had a 40-year-old son (and about the rest of your children), but that would be more to know who you are as a person. I also ask my patients to identify someone in their family who can help make decisions if you are unable to. That should be done formally, through a health care proxy designation, which is complementary to the advance directive that all adults should have. It’s a privilege for me as a primary care doctor to get to know my patients and follow them over years, sometimes many years.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Scout local garage sales: Garage sales are one way to bargain hunt and benefit the environment at the same time. Who knows what treasures you may be able to find at nearby garage sales? When shopping, set a spending limit and look for certain items you need, such as a bicycle or furniture. You may be surprised to find a quality item that costs much less than a brand new store-bought product.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 8, 1949, George Orwell’s novel of a dystopian future, “1984,” is published. The novel’s all-seeing leader, known as “Big Brother,” becomes a universal symbol for intrusive government and oppressive bureaucracy. * On June 9, 1973, with a victory at the Belmont Stakes, Secretariat becomes the first horse since Citation in 1948 to win America’s coveted Triple Crown. Secretariat won the Belmont by a record 31 lengths. * On June 11, 1982, the science-fiction classic “E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial” is released. The film captures the story of the wise, kind and cuddly alien botanist who is stranded on Earth and needs the help of a sensitive boy, Elliott, to get back home. * On June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson, ex-wife of football player O.J. Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman are brutally stabbed to death outside her Los Angeles condominium. Simpson became the chief suspect. Although the evidence against him was extensive, a jury acquitted Simpson on two counts of murder in trial that lasted 11 months. Stir in broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer about 75 minutes, or until meat is tender. Stir in potatoes and simmer another 30 minutes. Add rosemary and leeks. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles What You Can Do About Rising Food Prices According to the Consumer Price Index, food prices from one year ago have gone up 3.3%. It’s not going to stop there. Non-food prices are going up as well, as companies struggle to find the raw materials and manpower they need to produce everything else. Fitness equipment, furniture, lumber, gas, electronics -- it’s all going up. What we have to be concerned with, however, is our most basic need: food. Even if you’ve never felt any urgency before, check into your local food bank. Keep the information handy, just in case you need it later. Look at store brands. Many are even better than the name brands. Make every dollar count. Sign up for a grocery store rewards card, if it’s available. Use a private throwaway email address, the one you use to sign up for things that might generate too much junk mail. You’ll likely get emails about sales with coupons. (At my store, I log in at the checkout and get cash back at the end of each quarter.) Look to your own vegetable garden or farmers markets as ways to save. If you want to do canning this summer, one heads up: Be certain you can get the jars, lids and rings at the same time. They might be in short supply. Freezing meals is another option and ensures that food is always available. Double a stew or soup recipe and buy in bulk when it makes sense to. Shop from a list to the extent you can, knowing that stores can be out of things you want. Consider having breakfast for dinner one night a week, and one meatless dinner. Plan meals around what’s on sale each week. It bears repeating: Find out about your local food bank. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Gospel Corner We, as a church, have always believed in Jesus Christ being the answer for all problems and in the power of prayer. We continue to urge everyone to be in prayer for our President, military leaders and for our country in general. “I exhort therefor, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2 We also believe this to be a wake-up call from our Lord to our Nation, not only politically, but spiritually as well. These evil terrorists were willing to give up their lives for their religion and cause. Yet, we can’t even get up on Sunday morning and go to church, read our Bibles or pray. God gives warnings to nations that forget Him. Jesus may be coming very soon. Are you ready? Are you saved? “For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured there; behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” II Corinthians 6:2

STAY SAFE ON WET ROADWAYS ALL YEAR LONG Weather plays a role in driver safety regardless of what time of year it may be. From wind and rain to snow and ice, travelers routinely navigate roads when conditions are far from ideal. Wet roadways are a common occurrence. The automotive resource AAA advises that wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. Many crashes occur when drivers do not recognize the need to change their driving habits in wet conditions. Mastering driving techniques on slick, water-logged roads can help motorists avoid accidents and injuries. See and be seen: Before they even get behind the wheel, drivers should inspect all headlights and taillights to ensure they are in working order. Replace any bulbs that have burned out, and clean cloudy lens covers. Drivers need to see roadways clearly, so they should make sure their windshields are free of streaks, debris and water. Periodically replacing windshield wiper blades can ensure they’re working optimally when drivers need them most. Slow down and give other motorists space: Slowing down and stopping can take extra time when roads are wet. AAA notes that, with as little as 1/12inch of water on the road, tires have to displace a gallon of water a second to keep the rubber in contact with the street. Driving slowly can make it much easier for vehicles to stop. Plus, driving slowly enables drivers to see obstacles or pedestrians more easily, especially in heavy rains. Exercise caution with puddles and running water: It may be difficult to gauge the depth and ferocity of water flowing in a roadway. Quickly moving water can cause a vehicle to hydroplane or even move a large vehicle. A deep puddle also can affect drivers’ ability to steer or cause vehicles to stall. Take another route rather than risk driving through large puddles or areas where water is flowing on roadways. Skidding: Do not slam on the brakes if a car begins to skid or hydroplane, advise experts. Instead, ease up slowly from the accelerator and then steer the vehicle into the skid or straight. Then accelerate smoothly once more. Sudden, jerky movements when a car begins to skid can exacerbate the situation. Maintain tires: Tire treads should be checked at the start of a new season to ensure the rubber will be able to grip the road. Rotate tires according to the manufacturer’s requirements, or every 5,000 miles. Properly inflated tires will improve traction as well. AUTOMOTIVE

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

Revolutionary War Patriot Eber Blakeslee & the Spy BY RICHARD BLAKESLEY, 4 times great-grandson to Eber Blakeslee; Edited
T
his narrative is written by his 4x great grandson Richard Blakesley, Bloomfield NY. This information comes from National Archives pension file #S.23.129 & many other historical records. The pension was filed by two of his children, William Blakeslee [the author’s 3 times great grandfather] & his sister Mary H. Williams in 1853, five years after Eber’s death. Eber Blakeslee (Blakesley) was born in New London, Connecticut on October 1st, 1761. He joined the Connecticut Continental Navy in 1776 in which he served as a gunner on the schooner Spy for a period of 7 months, June 8, 1776 thru January 8, 1777. Herein lies a mystery. He turned age 15 halfway thru his tour of duty. During his tour he was paid 31.10 pounds, about a year’s wages, the same rate as the boatswain, ships clerk & ships carpenter. They were the third highest paid seamen, just under the Ship’s Lieutenant. The question is, where did a 14-15-year-old get the training to be a full-fledged gunner? Eber was on at least four cruises aboard the Spy, commanded by Captain Robert Niles, during which two prize ships were captured. The first was the schooner Hannah & Elizabeth loaded with rum & sugar on August 22, 1776. The second was the Hope loaded with rum, sugar, molasses, cocoa, and coffee on August 27, 1776. Unfortunately, the Hope was recaptured by a British frigate along with the prize crew. Luckily, Eber was not among them. The Spy, with Eber aboard, was also involved in a successful raid at Setauket Long Island to capture a company of Loyalists [Americans loyal to Britain] on September 20, 1776. Another mystery arises regarding Eber’s service. Why did a young seaman earning big wages and prize money serve only seven months? A clue may found in a pension deposition filed by a family friend. He relates a story told many times by Eber. Eber said, “While cruising [in the Spy] we came in with a vessel which did not show any color [flag] nor answer when we hailed them. Concluding to open their card, I without orders from anyone, loaded up the gun lying upon the deck upon the vessel and fired which caused them to run up their colors which proved to be American. The strange craft knew ours and was testing our courage by remaining silent and without colors.” What Captain Niles and his crew thought about this was not recorded. They probably were very unhappy. Their mission was to capture British merchant ships for prize money, not get into a gunfight with a British warship. Eber’s move was a reckless act, and it is likely only his youth saved him from a sound flogging. The Spy went on to glory without him by delivering a treaty of alliance to France in 1788. On the return voyage, the ship was captured by the British. Captain Nile returned home to more glory while the crew was probably pressed into British service. Eber was not with them, so he was one lucky boy for the second time. What Eber did after leaving navy service is not known for certain. A story related in the pension record by his daughter Mary relates this portion of his life as follows: “He joined the Connecticut troops as a private but held a Lieutenant’s commission at the taking of Fort Groton and served as an officer until the end of the war.” The actual fort’s name was Fort Griswold located on the Thames River at Groton, Connecticut.

Photo 1: Eber & Sarah Blakeslee’s final resting place Photo 2: The Spy It protected the river ports including the Spy’s home port of New London. The fort was destroyed by British troops under Benedict Arnold in 1781. Although there is no documented proof, the story has plausibility. Eber, age 22, was a trained gunner and lived in New London. If true, Eber was again a lucky boy. The British killed 88 out of 160 defenders, most after they had surrendered. After the war, Eber moved to Middletown, Connecticut, and married young Miss Sarah Ward on January 31, 1788. Sarah had been born in Middletown on August 22, 1771. During the following 26 years, they had 12 children and moved nine times to four different states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York. Sarah died on September 5, 1829 and was buried in Reed Corners Cemetery, Town of Gorham, New York. Eber died in Prattsburg, New York on March 27, 1848. He is buried alongside Sarah. He was without a memorial marker until the author obtained one in 2004. That stone contained errors. The author obtained and installed a new one in 2013. Both were obtained through the Veterans Administration. For more information see website blaecwulf.com

It’s good for so many things.” -- R.N. in Washington * “Instead of baking soda, I use three or four charcoal briquettes in a bowl to control odor and moisture in my refrigerator. I place the briquettes in a shallow dish, then cover the top of the bowl with a small piece of cheesecloth and secure it with a fat rubber band. The best thing is that I can still use these briquettes on the grill. In the summer, they get changed very regularly.” -M.L. in Virginia * Great ways to remove stuck labels: nail polish remover (NOT for use on plastics), WD-40 oil, soaking in hot water, rubbing alcohol.

* Have a stained coffee pot, but don’t want to use a harsh chemical cleanser to scrub that stain off? For gritty cleaning power, try using a tablespoon of milk and a tablespoon of salt. The salt gives you scrubbing power, and the milk’s acids help gently dissolve the stains. Page 26
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Remembering War Dogs DEAR PAW’S CORNER: During Memorial Day week, I wanted to bring your readers’ attention to the service and sacrifice of the thousands of dogs who went to war with their soldiers. Many did not come home, because they either died during operations or were left behind. Please take a few minutes this week to remember these four-footed warriors -- Jim W., Chattanooga DEAR JIM: Request received! Thank you for calling attention to the sacrifices of military working dogs. The U.S. armed forces has had a military dog program since World War II. These canine warriors help detect mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), provide security on bases and much more. Between 2001 and 2013, over 2,600 “war dogs” were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. In that time, at least 92 are known to have died, the majority in combat. However, in all this time, there was no military-wide tracking system of its injured war dogs. How often were they injured or killed? What were their injuries like? How did they fare after their service? Data that would be helpful in treating other injured war dogs was being lost. In January, funding was passed for a Military Working Dogs Trauma Registry (for details, go to www.avma. org and search for “working dogs, combat injuries”). Veterinarians will be able to consult the registry to learn more about war dog combat injuries and better ways to treat them. Injured war dogs will have a better chance of survival. Retired dogs will be able to get more effective treatment for their wounds. This legislation is a huge, active step toward truly honoring the sacrifices of military working dogs and can help even more of them come home. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Vax “Rules” First of all, there are no “rules” within a community when it comes to vaccinating. Secondly, you have some nerve telling people to go into seclusion because of their choice to not take a vaccine that is not FDA approved and is only in its trial stages. If you’re vaccinated, then what are you afraid of? Supposedly, you are protected from the virus, so those of us who are unvaccinated should not be a threat to you. That was a very arrogant statement you made there.
S E V RA Kindness I want to thank the nice lady who helped my mother who is on a walker and myself on a cane, to get a beautiful fuchsia plant down at [local store] off [local road]. Neither myself or the young girl working in that department could reach the plant. This kind lady got it down for us, and we told her we wanted it to attract hummingbirds. It is nice to know that there are still kind and wonderful people out there to help others. Thank you so very much. And to the lady behind us in line complaining that we were slowing her up because she only wanted to pay for mulch: Maybe someday you will get older, and it will take you time to get your money out. I hope someone just like you is behind you in line! Maybe you should also apologize to your husband who you screamed at about us. Why can’t everyone be kind like the other lady was? Hats off to Nick! Hats off to Nick at UR Urgent Care in Spencerport! On Thursday night, I called the Urgent Care for my husband. Unfortunately, they were not opened. I left a message, and they said that someone would call back. With the holiday weekend approaching, I never really expected to hear back from anyone. I was quite surprised when the next morning, I received a call from Nick at Urgent Care. He called up to see what was going on and how he could help. He was kind, concerned, and very pleasant. I was impressed! In fact, after the initial call, he called again to ask me if I wanted to speak to a provider. In the stressfilled world we find ourselves in, sometimes people can unintentionally overlook things. This can be especially true with those in high profile occupations such as those in the medical environment. So, Nick making sure that he contacted me after hearing my message was quite a relief and truly appreciated by my family and I.
Vaccine Seclusion Vaccines have never been a part of any rules for living in a community. You must be living on Animal Farm where you come from. It appears as though the coronavirus hysterics are still alive and well. I’m not vaccinated. What are you going to do about that? I have not worn a mask nor social distanced since this whole pandemic kicked off, and I never once got sick. Boy, the petty, irrelevant garbage that people will concern themselves with never ceases to amaze me.
Whether to vaccinate Yes, it’s your body and your choice, but when you get infected, you risk the lives of all of those around you. I’m sure you’ll expect medical personnel to risk their lives and well-being to care for you. So, don’t get vaccinated, but please stay home when you become ill. No masks at the grocery store? I’ve read the statistics and know half the population is not vaccinated. Why then is no one wearing a mask in this heavily-trafficked public place? If you haven’t gotten your vaccine make the right choice and wear your mask!

585-924-5140 IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.
