TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Meningioma Is Tumor of Brain’s Lining ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: In January 2014, I was diagnosed with a benign neoplasm of my cerebral meninges (meningioma). I am a healthy 64-year-old Caucasian woman. I do not take any medications. The finding was incidental. I have no symptoms from the meningioma. I sometimes feel as if my mental capacity has declined somewhat (such as memory), but I attribute this to the normal aging process. I have been getting an MRI every year since the diagnosis. The last test showed that the tumor was 2.9 cm by 1.6 cm by 2.7 cm. The mass measured 2.3 cm by 1.3 cm by 2.1 cm when I had the first MRI in 2014. It seems to be slowly growing. What are your thoughts on this? Do you advise surgery at this time? -- C.C. ANSWER: A meningioma is a type of brain tumor that arises from the meninges, the lining of the brain. Most of these are benign, although they do range from benign to cancerous. Even the cancerous tumors very rarely spread. The main problem with this type of tumor is that they grow, and there is not a lot of room inside the skull to spare. An enlarging tumor can compress the brain, and that can lead to symptoms. Depending on the exact location of the tumor, it can cause weakness, loss of vision or loss of hearing or smell. Another common symptom is a seizure. Changes in mental function are less common, but I am very cautious about ascribing symptoms to aging. Although the change in size seems small, the tumor has approximately doubled in size since 2014. That is a clear indication for treatment. It will likely keep growing and cause symptoms. Surgery is a treatment option, as is radiation, but only an expert can make the assessment of what is best in your situation. If the tumor is in a favorable location, most authorities would recommend surgical removal of the tumor.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My 59-year-old son has cirrhosis, probably from a blood transfusion he had as a teenager. His gastroenterologist tells him he is two years away from going on the transplant list for a new liver. Do you know if someone with compatible blood could donate a piece of his or her liver? Would that provide him with enough healthy liver? Also, he heard that you live only about five years with a new liver. Is that true? -- B.M. ANSWER: Cirrhosis after a blood transfusion makes me suspect that your son’s liver disease is due to hepatitis C. If that’s the case, his gastroenterologist has had or will have a discussion with him about new treatments for hepatitis C that will hopefully keep him from needing a transplant. However, if he does need a transplant, it can be done from a family member or even from a nonrelated person. There are risks to the donor, but major complications happen in only 1 to 3 percent of cases. The transplanted lobe of the liver does rapidly regenerate. The results for the recipient are comparable to that of deceased organ donors. Only the transplant surgeons can recommend whether a living donor is possible. For adults in your son’s age group, the likelihood of surviving five years after liver transplantation is about 70 percent. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Things that usually come easily and quickly for the Aries Lamb might need more of your time and attention during the next several days. Try to be patient as you work things out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A changing situation can create some complications. But if you apply that sensible Bovine mind to what seems to be a hopeless tangle of confusion, you’ll soon sort things out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a new look for your surroundings is fun. Expect to hear mostly positive comments on your efforts, as well as some well-intended suggestions you might want to note. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Maybe you’d rather do anything else than what you’re “stuck with” right now. But if you stop complaining, you might see how this could lead to something with real potential. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Even a proud Leo ultimately recovers from hurt feelings. However, a damaged relationship might never heal unless you’re willing to spend more time and effort trying to work things out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) There are lots of changes on the horizon, so be prepared to make some adjustments in your usually fine-tuned life. One change might even impact a personal decision you’ve been putting off. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Being the dependable person you are could work in your favor for a project that requires both skill and accountability. But check this out carefully. There could be a hidden downside. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A temperamental outburst about a mishandled project causes some fallout. Be sure to couple an apology with an explanation. A new opportunity beckons by week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Changing horses midstream is usually unwise but sometimes necessary. Examine your options carefully before making a decision. A trusted colleague offers good advice. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While much of your time is involved with business matters, fun-time opportunities open up by week’s end. Enjoy yourself, but be careful that you don’t overspend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A “revelation” opens your eyes to what is really going on in the workplace. What you learn could make a difference in your career path. Continue to be alert for more news. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Not wanting to make waves might be the safest way to deal with a difficult situation. But no substantive changes can be made unless you share your assessments with others. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of talking to people that makes them want to listen. You could find a successful career in politics. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Honey is nature’s sweet nectar. While honey certainly can add flavor to various recipes or be enjoyed straight out of the jar, it has many other surprising benefits as well. Used since ancient times as both a food and for medicinal purposes, honey can make for a versatile addition to anyone’s diet.

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Distracted driving is a problem that results in injuries and claims the lives of thousands of people each year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines distracted driving as any activity that diverts attention from driving. In 2015, 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 injured in the United States as a result of distracted driving. Allstate says distracted driving is now the No. 1 risk on Canadian roads, contributing to eight in 10 collisions. It is relatively easy to avoid becoming a statistic by reducing distractions behind the wheel. Put away tech devices: One of the easiest ways to reduce distractions is to keep phones and tablets out of reach while driving. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says sending or reading a text message takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for about five seconds, or long enough to cover a football field while driving at 55 mph. It removes a person’s attention from the road; takes his or her hands off of the wheel; and it mentally engages the brain when a driver’s focus should be on driving. Devices should be stowed away when driving. Drivers should pull over if they need to send a text or read a message. Set the GPS ahead of a trip Global positioning systems have revolutionized the way motorists get to and from locations. They can help signal upcoming traffic and find the best routes possible. Just like other devices, GPS can be a distraction, especially if drivers are taking their eyes off the road and constantly pressing buttons on the map. Enter the destination address before departing and place the GPS in a position that it can be glanced at, which will not impede vision. Better yet, let a passenger navigate. Limit or skip phone calls: Many people find that making phone calls while on the road is an efficient use of time. Yet the personal injury experts at Lehmbecker Law say even when drivers use hands-free devices their brains can remain distracted for 27 seconds after using voice commands to dial a number. Engaging in phone conversations will continue to take drivers’ minds off of their driving responsibilities. Drowsy driving is dangerous: Being tired can be a distraction as well. Geico insurance reports a U.S. government study showed that 37 percent of drivers have nodded off or actually fallen asleep at least once while driving. Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash by roughly four times. Those who become drowsy behind the wheel should pull over. Skip the infotainment package: New vehicle infotainment systems can take one’s attention off of the road for long periods of time. According to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers using invehicle technologies like voice-based and touch-screen features may find themselves unusually distracted. In addition to these tips, drivers can reduce the number of passengers contributing to distractions, turn down the volume on the radio, and pull over when eating on the road. Reducing distractions can save lives.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR Establish a bar setup Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt. A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING Among the more expensive fencing options, vinyl can make up for that initial sticker shock thanks to its durability. In addition, vinyl fences require little maintenance, saving homeowners the expense of paying for upkeep such as repainting. Vinyl fencing comes in various styles, and homeowners can choose the style that best suits their priorities with regard to aesthetic appeal and privacy.

Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens. HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

SMART TECHNOLOGY Flood sensor: Get peace of mind against damaging floods with Wi-Fi flood sensors.

Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

They Stepped Up to the Plate: Jeff Klein Knocks It Out of the Park By Amanda Dudek

W

hile many are familiar with some outstanding baseball players, there are several others who have long gone unrecognized: the Negro League Players. Jeff Klein of Honeoye Falls is working hard to change that. An enthusiastic baseball fan with a long-time interest in collecting Negro League Player signatures, Klein decided to take his interest to an entirely new level about five years ago. “My oldest child, Makayla, was in 2nd grade then,” said Klein. “One day, she came home with a new hero: Ruby Bridges.” Makayla wanted to write a letter to the still living Ms. Bridges, and he agreed to help her do so. “My seven-year-old wrote a two-and-a-half-page letter telling her why she was her hero,” Klein said. At that time, Klein had been collecting Negro League Player signatures for years. “I was fascinated by the level of play in the segregated leagues,” explained Klein. “I was collecting from Negro League Players before and after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier.” When Klein showed his collection to Makayla, she said, “Daddy, why don’t you write letters, too?” This started Klein on a journey that would change his relationship to baseball forever. “There are anywhere between 100-200 Negro League Players still living today,” explained Klein. “I began researching their addresses and writing them letters. I wanted to collect their autographs and help my children understand segregation.” It was a small note, scrawled in reply to one of his letters, that truly set They Stepped Up to the Plate into motion. The note was from Bill McCrary, a Negro League Player. It read, Give me a call. I will tell you some of the things that happened.

At first, Klein didn’t realize his success until he met Josh Gibson’s grandson, Sean Gibson, executive director of the Josh Gibson Foundation. “He was curious about our work, asking how many people attended our event,” Klein recalled. “When I told him we had about 285 people, he replied, ‘Next time you have an event, call me. I want to be a part of it. If you can get even 30 people to show up to anything related to the Negro Leagues, you are doing something right.’ ” More confirmation soon followed. “I spoke with Ted Knorr of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR),” said Klein. “They were getting ready to have their 20th Annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference.” The SABR was considering TSUP for its top award, the Robert Peterson Recognition Award, and asked about attendance. Klein answered. “He was just astonished,” said Klein. “We received the award.” “We have our own award called the Jim Zapp Courage Award in honor of Jim Zapp, a former teammate of Willie Mays and one of the players to whom I had written,” said Klein. “When I asked Zapp’s son if we could have permission to use his father’s name, he said his family would be honored, but it is we who are honored to recognize those living today who once played segregated baseball.”

It took two weeks for Klein to build up the courage to call McCrary, believing he would be fortunate if he received even 5 minutes of the man’s time. “When I called, we talked for 45 minutes,” Klein said. “The things he shared were amazing.”

I needed to share these stories with other people!

After this, Jeff Klein began adding his phone This framed poster announced “They Stepped number to every letter he Up to the Plate’s” first event. wrote. “As soon as I began putting my number in, they started calling and sharing about playing segregated baseball, particularly in the 1950’s,” he said. “I would also send two index cards: one for their signature and another to jot down a favorite memory.” Memories began pouring in. “I knew I needed to share these stories with other people,” Klein stated. “When my best friend’s neighbor, a retired journalist, asked if I was writing a book, even offering to help, I started writing, They Stepped Up to the Plate (TSUP), which is also the name of my nonprofit.” Klein met with representatives of the City of Rochester. “We were hoping the city could provide a venue,” he explained. “Instead, they said they would do all of our printing, including flyers, posters, programs and 500 personal baseball cards for each player and provide the venue, as well!” Klein invited the first four players and held the event, hoping for 100 attendees. An estimated 285 people came.

“We have now held two - Jeff Kline, events and raised a little Founder over $12,000,” said Klein. “All of the money goes to the players and hosting players for the events.” Unfortunately, the Negro League Players are an aging population. “I compare it to WWII Vets,” explained Klein. “There is a limited number of them, and many are passing away. These men have an important story to tell, and it’s imperative that we gather as many of their stories as quickly as we can.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? GRILLED CHICKEN & ONION SKEWERS Makes 10 to 12 skewers Basting Sauce (optional) 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup mirin 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, excess fat removed and cut into bite-size pieces 1 yellow onion, cut into 2-inch wedges, and/or baby leeks, white part only, cut into 1-inch lengths 1 tablespoon canola or other neutral oil Salt (optional) Place 10 to 12 bamboo skewers in water to cover at least 30 minutes before grilling. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high. If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl. Drain the skewers. Thread the chicken pieces alternately with the onion pieces onto the skewers, using about 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of onion for each skewer. As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil. The grilling goes quickly, so set up your workstation next to the grill before you begin: the plate holding the skewers, the bowl of sauce and a basting brush and/ or the salt, and tongs for turning the skewers. If using the basting sauce, either dip each skewer in the sauce or brush the sauce on the skewers and then place directly over the heat. Grill the skewers, turning 3 or 4 times and basting with additional sauce, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are scorched around the edges, about 5 minutes total. If the sauce appears to be burning at any point, move the skewers to a cooler part of the grill, or reduce the heat if using a gas grill. If using salt instead of the basting sauce, place the skewers directly over the heat and grill, turning 3 or 4 times, until cooked through, about 5 minutes total. Sprinkle both sides of each skewer with salt and remove from the grill. Serve the skewers piping hot.

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

It’s Father’s Day! Let Us Do The Grilling!

1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately.

Locally owned & operated

To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

Master

Gardeners What is the best way to deal with slugs in my veggie garden? - Amanda D. Wet conditions and organic matter are favorable to slug problems. Depending on the extent of the planting slugs can be handpicked and removed. Organic mulch and plastic soil covers make excellent habitat and hiding places which can increase your problem. In some situations, wetted boards or heavy cardboard can be placed on garden soil and the slugs disposed of daily as they accumulate on the bottom. Replace the covers for the next night. Bait pellets containing iron are now available which will slowly kill slugs but will not pose a hazard to pets

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County or other soil organisms. The previous generation of pellets containing metaldehyde or ormethiocarb can cause serious kidney damage to dogs and cats if they are eaten. Iron occurs naturally in soil, nothing else will be injured with this kind of product. Read the labels to find a product containing iron. And bear in mind - you must read the label for all use and precautions. (The label is the law, as they say in the trade.) Slugs do the most damage when plants are young. In fact, they’re great pre-emergence seedling killers. So, start your baiting early if you choose to bait - the “early and often” approach. No way can you put bait down once and consider your

problem solved. Sure, you might (if you’re lucky) kill the majority of slugs in your garden, but you have to stay on your game. Those populations will recover as time goes by. Additional strategies include reducing use of mulch in problem areas, and removing leaves that touch the ground on vulnerable plants.

When I moved into my home, 4 years ago, the front yard had an established garden with 4 different varieties of lilies. They have taken over the garden and need to be split and moved. When is the best time to do this? - Shirley S. Early spring--when you see the first shoots coming up. Dig up the clump, divide them and replant.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On June 9, 1772, colonists, angered by the British Parliament’s passing of the Townshend Acts restricting colonial trade, board and set ablaze the HMS Gaspee, an armed British customs schooner that had run aground. British officials found no one willing to identify those involved, and the inquiry closed without result.

New Survey Reveals BP Monitoring Habits Need To Improve (NAPS)—A new survey from the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association shows that 40 percent of people with high blood pressure (HBP), or hypertension, report their numbers were still too high at their most recent doctor’s appointment, and many don’t even know their numbers. The Problem HBP occurs when the force of blood flowing through your blood vessels is consistently too high. Ideally, blood pressure should be below 120/80 mmHg. It’s considered elevated if the top number (systolic pressure) is above 120 and high if systolic is 130 or higher, or the bottom number (diastolic pressure) is 80 or higher. Uncontrolled, it can lead to heart attack and stroke, and most of the time there are no obvious symptoms. What People With HBP Can Do Most people say they know what to do to lower HBP. Yet, according to the new survey, 44 percent of those with HBP didn’t know what a high reading is, and 27 percent didn’t know what their blood pressure was the last time it was checked. In addition, while 80 percent of those diagnosed with HBP say they take medication, 16 percent of those with HBP believe that as long as they take their BP medication, they don’t need to monitor their BP. “The first step to keeping your numbers under control is knowing what they are,” said Sondra DePalma, DHSc, a cardiology PA and certified hypertension specialist. “There are no symptoms of high blood pressure, so you can’t rely on how you feel to gauge your levels. You have to take the time—less than 10 minutes—to check it. That’s 10 minutes well spent, considering controlled blood pressure can add five years to your life.” Some people will need medication to keep their blood pressure numbers in a healthy range, DePalma said. “But that doesn’t mean you get a free pass on lifestyle changes to support your blood pressure– lowering therapy. Making healthier living choices helps your medicine work better.” DePalma added that under a doctor’s care, some people may be able to reduce their medication dose or wean off of it after making consistent progress with lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes that help reduce blood pressure include: • Get regular physical activity: Ninety–150 minutes a week of aerobic activity can reduce systolic blood pressure about 5 mmHg. • Eat a well-balanced diet low in salt: Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy, such as the DASH eating plan, can drop your systolic pressure up to 11 mmHg. Reducing your salt intake by about 1,000 mg per day has a similar effect on systolic pressure as increasing aerobic activity—dropping it about 5 mmHg. • Maintain a healthy weight: For about every two pounds lost, your systolic pressure could drop 1 mmHg. • Work together with your doctor to create a treatment plan. Learn More For more facts and tips about HBP and how to control it, go to www. heart.org/hbp. Many people with high blood pressure aren’t keeping close tabs on their condition. A few weeks ago, I was at Walmart in Batavia. I was in a hurry to move my car closer to the exit. My mom was waiting for me inside. She couldn’t walk far, so she was on my mind. After we got to her house, I couldn’t find my purse. I called the store, and customer service had it. Someone had found I used a wheelbarrow to put my yard debris by the roadside. It makes it easier to take out more than one bag at a time and bring them back in when they aren’t removed weekly. While taking out my trash I noticed that someone had dumped my yard bags and stolen my wheelbarrow! REALLY?!! Please return - no questions asked. I went in to make a deposit in my husband’s checking account. The teller wouldn’t accept my cash because, even though I was a beneficiary on the account, it was not a joint account. She said it had something to do with money laundering. Really? I told her that it was just a few hundred dollars, not $10,000. I asked how we could make GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

this happen. Finally, she said that she could put the money in my checking account, then transfer it into my husband’s account. At one point, she even asked me if I opened the account in NY. I had, right at that branch. Then, she wouldn’t accept my checks, because my husband’s signature was needed since it was my son’s check, even though my son had already signed it. This teller was unfriendly, not pleasant and just made the bank lose three customers. Never again!

close. I happen to be the one he turned in front of and he was lucky I had seen him at the last second and swerved into the middle turning lane. I couldn’t believe my eyes; my heart was pounding due to the thought of almost hitting him! Imagine if his mom got a call on Mother’s Day letting her know that someone had hit her son. He could have been seriously injured, if not DOA! I would have felt terrible, and I almost pulled a U-turn to talk some sense into his head. He may have been on a crosswalk, but without notice, he turned onto it. Look before crossing, and cross when it is SAFE! -A concerned motorist

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

NOW HIRING! Well-established local specialty store seeks mature, reliable, selfstarting individual for year-round, part-time sales, customer service, and related duties. Please share brief work history, availability, phone # and best time to contact you, to: Specialty Store P.O. Box 212 Canandaigua, NY 14424 or respond to: vstream46@gmail.com HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.
