Simplify vacations and savor the fun Vacations are a great opportunity for families or individuals to recharge. But especially active vacationers often return from their trips in need of rest, as planning may have taken its toll or schedules loaded with too many activities might have left little time for R&R. Those willing to simplify their vacations may find their excursions provide the rest they need and the energizing boost they can make use of upon returning from their destinations.

TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious.

#5280659

Summer fun that is close to home Outdoor movies: Local parks frequently host summer movie nights when participants can view a movie on the big screen while under the stars. This can be an informal way to get the entire family together for a fun flick. Films are typically family-friendly and schedules are available well in advance. Bring a blanket and some snacks and enjoy an inexpensive evening together.

Strawberries Pick your own!

PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime.

OPEN July 4th from 8am-2pm

SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it.

The Gospel Corner GOD, HELP US! Mark 9:22 - “If thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, if thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” Life is like the ocean, sometimes it’s calm, sometimes a raging storm. In both, we should be pointed to our need for God. When things are going well, we’re susceptible to abandoning Him. Some have been in hurricanes, tornadoes, etc., and have gone through the fear of God’s power over all. It’s not hard then to think about our NEED of God’s mercy and power to SAVE. The chorus to the song goes: “Lord I need you when the sea of life is calm... when the wind is blowing strong, Lord I need you.” God will supply our NEED when we see our NEED of our Supplier. God, help us to repent!

EXPLORING SOLAR ELECTRICITY Solar electricity is generated through a process known as the photovoltaic affect. Sunlight shines on solar panels, which are mounted on the roof of the home or in another prominent location. Each panel typically has between 60 to 72 solar cells strung together. These photovoltaic cells use the irradiation in sunlight to stimulate the flow of electrons in the semiconductor material, which creates direct current, or DC, electricity. Systems that directly convert the DC to alternating current, or AC, the type of power voltage used in a house, do so by way of an inverter. The inverter feeds power to the circuit board.

585-377-3222 HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS Be especially careful with power tools. Power tools can do a lot and they’re fun to use. But it’s important that DIYers do not let fun distract them from safety. The Power Tool Institute urges power tool users to wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. The PTI also advises users to make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and to inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. Much like it’s unsafe to overreach on a ladder, overreaching when using power tools increase the risk for mistakes, accidents and injuries.

Master

Gardeners How do I get rid of spiny sow thistle and Canada thistle? Spiny sowthistle is a winter annual that is actually in the sunflower family and not a true thistle. Spiny sowthistle spreads by seed. It flowers from late spring through the summer, depending on the location. The flower is yellow, resembling a dandelion, but forms in a corymbiform cluster. The root of spiny sowthistle is a taproot. It is found in waste areas and other open areas such as roadsides and thin turf. It can be controlled by mowing which prevents the stem and flowers from forming and eliminates seed formation. The plant can also be cut out. A postemergent herbicide application is effective when spiny sowthistle is young and actively growing but

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County should not be needed if the location will be mowed. For best results, treat prior to bolting. Canada Thistle is a rhizomatous perennial. Since Canada thistle has a deep root system, the only mechanical approach for controlling this weed is to exhaust the storage roots (exhaust perennial roots). Food reserves in the roots reach a minimum in June and then increase as food flows from the shoots to the storage roots. Consequently, shoots should be removed for the first time by early June. Mowing or repeated cutting may be used to help prevent the production of seeds and starving the plant. Persistent removal of the shoots be-

fore they attain several leaves will exhaust the storage roots within two years and eliminate the weed. One study found a 21 day weeding schedule was optimal. Postemergent applications of a systemic herbicide may be used. Fall is typically the best time for these treatments when the plant is translocating food reserves to the rooting structures. Other good times are during the early bolting stage when plants

are 6-10” tall and during the bud to flowering stage. Some of the common lawn weed control materials are effective. Spot treatments are good for limited stands. Glyphosate products labeled for the use are effective. Lawns should be properly maintained to promote a healthy, dense turf that with managed mowing will compete well with weeds.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Revisiting Seniors-Only Grocery Shopping If you’ve been depending on grocery delivery or curbside pickup for the past two years, you might not know this: Many stores are continuing to have seniors-only hours. I’d tried going to seniors-only hours once two years ago ... but only once. The whole virus/pandemic was so new to us that we assumed that we must shop and stock up for all eventualities, leading to widespread shortages. The crowds that day were so massive that the line went across the front of the store, down the side and to the back. Store personnel were stationed at the door with counters in their hands, only allowing in a set number of shoppers. When I saw a friend coming out, I asked: “What’s it like in there?” The answer: “It’s a nightmare. People are grabbing 10 of everything. Do not go in.” And I didn’t. Recent queries among friends who use seniors-only hours indicate that things are much, much better now in terms of crowds. We know that many items are chronically out of stock. We acknowledge that COVID is still around, and we wear masks. We don’t expect much in the way of variety in our diets unless we luck onto a full shelf of food. Many of us, however, haven’t been to a seniors-only hour for a very long time, if ever. We depend on delivery and curbside pickup. If you’re ready to try seniors-only shopping, call your local grocery and retail stores. While fewer stores are now offering it, some still do. It might be every day before the regular opening, or it might be one or two very early days per week. Take your hand sanitizer and wipe down the cart handles. Wear a mask. The bonus, I’m told, is that’s when fresh vegetables and fruit are put out, and the overnight stock clerks have loaded the shelves. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

S E V RA Heroic Storm Cleanup Efforts Many thanks to the Geneseo Department of Public Works for their great work after the June 16th microburst. The storm hit at the end of the workday. Nevertheless, they stayed on the job until 1 a.m. Friday and were back at work at 6 a.m. We appreciate the hard work they do throughout the year, and they are doing a terrific job clearing up this devastation. Thanks also to the other villages’ crews who are helping.

Thank you, Matt at Strong ER Being stuck in a waiting room for hours is no fun for anyone. But then I watched waiting room ambassador Matt. He loves his job, and it shows. It’s refreshing and reassuring. He made my otherwise boring, horrible experience into a glimmer of hope. Thank you, Matt. I appreciate you, and I pray your employer recognizes the gem you truly are.

Gypsy Moth Control I’d like to address the property owners who have been having their forested areas sprayed (presumably for gypsy moths). Please be aware that, while the gypsy moth is an introduced and invasive species, this spray does not discriminate when it comes to killing all types of caterpillar larvae, including those of native butterflies and moths. These caterpillars are a vital food source to migrating as well as breeding populations of birds. Adult birds feed heavily on all types of caterpillars, and they are an important food source for nestlings as well. Although the gypsy moth larvae do defoliate trees, most deciduous trees can withstand several defoliations and still recover, as evidenced by the lush foliage this spring after defoliations last year. Gypsy moth populations go in cycles, and we are on the downward trend of this latest outbreak. So please think twice before treating your property and negatively impacting our native birds, butterflies and moths. Reviews Is this the new trend? More and more reviews are requested after purchases, quality, services, etc. When you give an honest review, you get contacted back with a not-sofriendly response: “You’re wrong, that didn’t happen, you expect too much,” etc. To practically demand all reviews be 5 star with no criticism, even though it could be good criticism, only makes their integrity worse! To deny or discourage critiques is nothing short of a disservice to your customers.

Backing Out I hear you when you say you were backing out of a space at a grocery store and people just continue to walk right behind you without even looking side to side. It happens to me all the time. I question people about that and ask them why they do that and they say, “Well, I have the right away.” But why don’t they look? And as far as it being your fault, it probably will be because you’re backing out and because people have the right of way. They know this. Again, I have been in motion, and people walk quickly right behind me without looking or stopping.

Thank you, Twisters & McDonalds! A huge shout out to Twisters of Livonia and to McDonalds in Lakeville for their continued sponsorship of the Livingston County Baseball/ Softball Camp. Each year, they donate ice cream to all the camp kids! Jeff at Twisters is awesome to work with, and Jessie at McDonalds is amazing, too! CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Drive a vehicle with stop/ start technology. Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off. DID YOU KNOW?

If the 1927 song “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream” by Howard Johnson, Billy Moll and Robert A. King is correct, then the world has been a noisy place for quite some time. Though the exact origins of ice cream are unknown, historians agree this popular treat has been around for a very, very long time. The International Dairy Foods Association says the origins of ice cream may reach as far back as the second century B.C. Though he wasn’t around back then, the fifth Roman Emperor Nero, who ruled from 54 to 68 A.D., might have been so fond of iced treats that he routinely sent runners into the Apennine Mountains to retrieve snow that he would then flavor with fruits and juices. That tale might be apocryphal, but there’s no denying ice treats have been enjoyed for a long time. And based on a 2018 report from Grand View Research, Inc. that projected the global ice cream market would reach roughly $79 billion by 2025, it’s fair to say ice cream will remain popular for a long time to come as well.

False Positives Plague Lung Cancer Screening ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 74-year-old female who smoked a pack a day for 40-plus years, having quit smoking about 18 years ago. As a precaution, I asked my primary doctor to order a screening CT scan, knowing that I’m a candidate for lung cancer. The results showed a 3-mm nodule in one lung, and I was advised not to worry and that my doctor would order another CT scan in six months. I can’t help but wonder if this is cancer and if an oncologist, after six months, will ask me why I waited so long to see him. -- T.W. ANSWER: Medical professionals have been attempting to screen for lung cancer for decades. Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it. CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives will be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small; 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent one lung cancer death. There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans and sometimes an invasive procedure to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did. The small size of your nodule means your risk that this nodule is cancer is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancer is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You should also have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing. The second concern is current smokers who consider screening. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker, and quitting remains the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health.

4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location.

In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

Independence Day Reflections BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

he 4th of July is a favorite holiday for many—including me! And there are few better places to celebrate July 4th than in the Finger Lakes. Fireworks, rings of fire (wherever there’s a lake!), carnivals, field days, and similar celebrations abound. Perhaps most importantly, families gather together to eat and enjoy each other’s company. This is perhaps the first truly post-pandemic year families will join together for Independence Day. As families gather, sadly, several faces may be missing. Yet, their memories will always be cherished and honored. The pleasure of once again gathering together will no longer be taken for granted as we take this opportunity to hold our loved ones close. This is also the first year several events have returned after the pandemic heights of 2020. The Covid pandemic generated more conversation around the concept—and the practical application—of freedom than there has been in some time. The tension surrounding questions of freedom made for many disagreements; resolutions for many of these questions have yet to be reached. While these decisions continue to develop, it may be a good time to reflect on what we do NOT have, rather than disagreements over what we do have. We do not, for example, have a fear of becoming civilian casualties of a war raging on American soil. The tragic conflict in Ukraine has given sharp contrast to the relative peace and security enjoyed in the United States. Surely, the value of freedom from such local devastation cannot be overstated. We also do not have restrictions on what we can learn and believe. In the United States, it is not illegal to peacefully hold and declare one’s own political, religious, moral, and

otherwise ideological persuasions. Peacefully, we are able to educate ourselves and our children as we see fit, worship if and how we see fit, and pursue any career we choose. Whether rented or owned, we, as United States citizens, do not have the fear of legally being driven out of our own homes, having our property confiscated, or having our family members harmed or stolen away. While conversations continue regarding potential changes to existing immigration legislation, it is important to recognize the guarantees of relative safety which make United States citizenship so desirable. Finally and crucially, we are free from the fear of having our families forced apart. Even the briefest glance through history, and into some countries around the world today, shows that this has not always been—and is not always—the case. Families have been divided by slavery, war, forced labor, conscription, genocide, and more. The United States hasn’t always been free of these things, but today, legally as United States citizens, we have a reasonable expectation that our families will remain together as long as we wish. For these reasons and so many more, the United States of America—with all her faults—is still something to celebrate. Our country may not be perfect, but we the people continue to have the power and freedom to improve it. That’s something to be grateful for this 4th of July—and to remember every time we have the opportunity to vote—both locally and nationally. So, happy 246th birthday, United States of America, and thank you.

HOW TO HEAL FROM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT AROSE DURING THE PANDEMIC Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establishing old routines also can return a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Roller coasters are a staple of amusement parks, and even though the first patent for a roller coaster was issued to LaMarcus Thompson in 1885, it’s believed modern roller coasters descended from winter sled rides made popular in the 17th century in St. Petersburg, Russia. Called “Russian Mountains,” these thrill rides took place on icy hills that may have reached as high as 200 feet in the air.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Did Hiccups Lead to Guinea Pig’s Death?

MONUMENTAL MEMORIES

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our beloved guinea pig died suddenly this morning. I’m not sure what happened, and because there is no veterinarian near us who can treat guinea pigs, I’m searching for an answer. He developed an ear problem recently that was causing him to tilt his head, and to treat this, we were giving him Nurokind and 5 ml of water through a syringe. This morning, he started to hiccup, and an hour later he passed away. Is there any clue that you can provide as to why? -- N. Dwarakanath DEAR N.: My sincere condolences on the loss of your guinea pig. They’re such wonderful pets. When guinea pigs get sick, it can be difficult to figure out the exact treatment. Head tilt is one of those illnesses that could be an ear infection but could also be something more serious like pneumonia or another infection. I’m a little curious about using Nurokind (Mecobalamin) to treat the illness, as it is a treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency in humans. Perhaps a guinea pig owner out there can respond with the answer. Keeping your guinea pig hydrated was good, as this helps them when they’re stressed out or sick. When an illness is prolonged in guinea pigs, the stress and pain make them weaker, and they begin to experience other problems. The hiccupping is usually a sign of indigestion in healthy guinea pigs, but even for them, it’s very uncomfortable and stressful. That may have been the last straw for his system. I wish I could give you a definitive answer. Because there is no qualified vet near you, I encourage you to search online for guinea pig owner forums, as they are a very supportive and informative community.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Leave work behind. The United States is one of the few countries that does not guarantee paid days off. The Center for Economic and Policy Research says one in four working Americans do not get paid time off. The employment site Glassdoor notes that among those who do get paid vacations, 75 percent of employees chose not to use all of their time in 2013. By comparison, Canadians get an average of 19 days of vacation time per year. Stress about making up work or falling behind makes some professionals worry about using their vacation time, and those who do travel may stay connected to the office in some shape or form. Splitting time between leisure and work responsibilities on a vacation can be taxing and take away from the time you need to relax and recharge. Cut work ties and immerse yourself in the vacation experience.

Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE

FOR ALL

POSITIONS

Determine how much space you truly need. Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.

* Quinoa is becoming really popular as a grain alternative. It’s very small and requires rinsing before cooking to remove potentially bitter residue. Here’s a great trick to rinse your quinoa without losing half of it to the holes in your colander: Use a French press coffeemaker. The fine mesh and pouring spout make rinsing a breeze. -- JoAnn * “Candle nubs, that little bit left when the candle has burned down all the way, can be removed from a candleholder by setting the whole thing in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. The wax surface hardens and shrinks, making it easier to chip out. The same goes for linens that have wax drips: freeze and chip away, then use a degreasing spot cleaner.” -- Y.G. in Arkansas * Fun get-together project for kids: Have everyone doodle on a large posterboard. At the end of the night, trace a puzzle pattern and cut it up, making a large floor puzzle. You can bring it out at the next play date. The smaller the children, the larger the pieces! -- A.L. in Florida * Easily thread a needle with hairspray. Spritz the end of the thread with a little high-hold hairspray and pull taut. It will be much easier to thread.
