HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Do not set air conditioner thermostats at lower than normal temperatures when turning them on. The DOE notes that setting thermostats at lower than normal temperatures when turning air conditioners on will not cool homes any faster than setting them at typical temperatures. Such a strategy will only lead to excessive energy consumption and higher energy bills.

As inspectors go through their checklists, they may notice things that were done incorrectly and will offer advice about how to mend the problem before it becomes a larger headache. If left unchecked, an electrical error could lead to a fire or another dangerous situation. Repairs that are not structurally sound may pose problems or deteriorate more quickly than structures that are constructed correctly. Furthermore, catching improper technique early on eliminates having to tear down and redo work, which can be a costly and time-consuming endeavor.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

The Gospel Corner The Traditions of Man “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end therof are the ways of death.” (Proverbs 14:12). Man is full of ideas of what is right in his own mind. One of man’s ideas is, “If you live up to your religion, you’ll be alright.” In Romans 3:23 the Bible says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” All the religion in the world will NOT get rid of one spot of sin. If you live up to your religion, you’ll go down to hell. The Lord Jesus Christ said to the Pharisees and scribes, “Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.” (Mark 7:6, 7, 9) God “now commandeth all men everywhere to repent.” (Acts 17:30) Will you repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ? “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us...” (Titus 3:5).

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

No, Life Has Not Returned to Normal A recent survey concluded that we seniors are ready to go back out into the world, to resume our former pre-COVID activities. I suspect the poll questions weren’t asked of seniors in my part of New England. We are not, for the most part, ready to get back to what we were doing before. We learned to talk to family and friends on internet conferences and managed the software quite well. We explored new hobbies with materials that arrived by mail since we weren’t going into stores. We mastered complicated recipes (with ingredients picked up curbside at the grocery), and we renewed our interest in chess and other games, playing online. We explored parts of our state we hadn’t seen before because we could safely drive around -- as long as we didn’t get out of the car. Our senior center is still holding the men’s Monday lunch in the parking lot, socially distanced, of course. The French language class still isn’t meeting because it didn’t work out well trying to hear and speak French while spaced out across the parking lot with cars going by. The art classes are still done remotely because it’s difficult to do watercolor painting outside with the breeze blowing, and no one is ready to go inside the building. A few fast phone calls revealed that, no, the American Legion hall still isn’t open. The auto dealership is trying to restrict potential buyers to test driving only three cars because each one has to be sanitized after customers take one out for a spin. The deli on Main Street is still taking orders only at the front window and doesn’t know when it will open for indoor eating. If a poll were done here, I suspect it would conclude that, no, we’re not ready to come out yet. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

EXPERT ADVICE FOR COLLEGE-BOUND GRADS “The students who make the most of their college experience aren’t necessarily the smartest ones. It’s often the average kids who know how to utilize the system, connect with the professors, take advantage of extracurricular activities, and manage their time well who reap the rewards,” Tyler says. “Been There, Should’ve Done That” can help students get all they can out of the next four years.

NOW HERE’S A TIP * Keep a pretty basket by your front door for anything you need to take along when you leave. This can be store returns, backpacks, exercise gear for the gym, your sunglasses, whatever. When you leave the house, check the basket! * “Necklaces can be stored together without tangling if you thread each one through a straw. You can cut the straw to a shorter length for choker-length necklaces or bracelets. No knots!” -- I.A. in Arizona * If you have a little bit of touchup paint left in your gallon can, transfer it to a mason jar. Write the exact color and brand on the lid, and it will be much easier to store. * “Our basement was dark and a little claustrophobic. My husband painted it a lovely sunny yellow and that helped, but it needed something else. I took a photo of the spectacular view at our son’s house in Montana, and had the photo blown up. We mounted it on the wall with some dummy curtains! It’s perfect, and it reminds me of him.” -- R.W. in New York * Need to chill a bottle of wine quickly? Wet a kitchen towel, then wrap it around the wine. Twist the ends to secure, and put the whole thing in the freezer for 30 minutes. * Great ways to remove stuck labels: nail polish remover (NOT for use on plastics), WD-40 oil, soaking in hot water, rubbing alcohol.

ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

CONTEMPLATING RETIREMENT? First…MAKE THESE LISTS! TIPS FROM LOCAL WRITER, DP DUNN

R

etirement: that goal of every hard-working American. Time to do—what exactly? Before you dive into that great unknown, give a bit of forethought, dare to dream and contemplate, cogitate and ruminate, even! Then, make your retirement lists. Lists are powerful tools. They help us to organize, prioritize, and even discard. Writing a list can be cathartic; lists get ‘stuff ’ like emotions or ideas out of our head, heart and mind, and onto paper where they can be handled differently. Writing makes ideas visual and real. Our daily work provides us with structure, money (always useful), socialization, connection, and purpose. It comes at a cost, however. When working, you do the bidding of others, like your boss, your clients, even your customers. You are paid for your time, ideas, labor, creativity, insight, and skill. It sounds great, but sometimes we desire change, renewal, and feel the need to explore. In retirement, you can become who you want to be or need to be beyond the context and confines of your career. As you contemplate that great retirement change, consider starting with a few lists:

List 1: Things you will miss A paycheck? Meaningful work? The structure of a daily routine? Intelligent conversation with smart, educated, well-read and interesting people? Solving problems and fixing things or processes? Free coffee? When you leave, there will be a void in your life. By identifying the ‘good stuff ’ at work, you can identify other ways to fill those pleasant voids. It is easier that you might think. Be creative. Ask other like-minded people you know who have already retired.

List 2: Things you don’t like This is easy. Simply list every aspect that causes you grief, worry, heartburn and headaches. No names or titles, please. ‘Jeff ’ in accounting might not think highly of you, either! This shouldn’t be personal; note activities, situations, or tasks that stress you to your limit, things that make you sad, angry or crazy. What hurts your spirit or does not fit with who you are or who you want to be? What holds you back or gets in your way? Write. Get it all out. There, that feels better!

List 3: Life events you have missed A wise person once wrote: “Show me your calendar, and I’ll show you your priorities.” While your relationship with your employer has been mutually beneficial, you have likely forfeited or delayed some of your life in exchange. You were compensated for your time, but what events were sacrificed? Your work calendar shows your work priorities. Now, look for the priorities that are missing from your calendar; see what is not there. First, list specific events you have missed because of work such as your child’s first words or first steps, a family reunion, a destination wedding, opportunities to sit quietly and contemplate, changes to create or renew important relationships or friendships. Maybe there are more events and experiences you’ve missed. Write them down and get these losses out of your head and your heart. Next, look for common themes within your listed items like Family & Friends, Travel, Exploration, Spirituality and Faith, Fitness, Organization, Downsizing, or the Pursuit of Hobbies and Pastimes. Now, you are ready to plan.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Each list has a purpose! List 1: The first list shows you what you need to retain post-retirement. A financial planner will help you analyze the cash-flow while addressing your missing paycheck and your insurance concerns. Social interaction: You may need to add some new friends. You can meet with the old friends from work when they’re available. Try not to gloat; they don’’t like that! Where will you meet new friends? And what about your ‘meaningful work and purpose’ goals? Considering your skills and knowledge developed during your career, perhaps you can volunteer or teach others to do what gave you joy and purpose for so many years. List 2: What is the purpose of the second list? That list is for six months after you leave. You might start thinking, “Gee, it wasn’t so bad. Maybe I should have stayed longer.” Stop! Pull out list number two and re-read it. Take a deep breath and feel affirmed in your decision. List 3: List number three is your roadmap. Look at what you missed and focus on filling your remaining time addressing those voids and deficits. You’re likely still young and healthy, interesting, and interested. Go forth! Do! Pursue what you wanted to when you didn’t have the time. Explore! Grow! Forethought and planning (Some may say daydreaming!) can help us prepare for change while growing in the right directions at the right times. At the same time, this roadmap is not cast in stone; modify it and make it your own. Time’s short, so prepare and live your best life. Mr. Dunn retired in 2020 mid-pandemic. He contemplates the profundities of the human condition, and why pickle jars can be so difficult to open, while sitting under a large willow tree, sipping a beer, enjoying summer breezes, and watching cars zip by his Webster, NY home. Remember the Sound?

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Paraplegic Battles UTIs

Reclaim your ability to enjoy every moment with the latest hearing aid technology.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a paraplegic due to a spinal cord injury back in 1979. I battle one UTI after another, and I am becoming immune to most antibiotics. Why the constant infections? My urologist just ordered a CT scan, but seems uninterested in me as a patient. I am sick of being sick. I straight catheterize four times a day usually. It’s getting very hard for them to match the antibiotic to the culture. At times the infections are so bad I get “foggy headed.” These times I am in misery. The last time I went to the ER hoping it wasn’t sepsis. They gave me antibiotics. I can’t keep running to the ER. My copays are too much. Maybe I need a doctor who specializes in working with people who have a spinal cord injury. -- Anon. ANSWER: Regular drainage of the bladder with a “straight catheter” is the most effective way to reduce the risk of urine infections in a person with a spinal cord injury, but it is not perfect. People may still get bacteria in the bladder. Although it may be worthwhile to review your catheterization technique with an expert, it’s possible to get infections even with perfect technique. You haven’t become immune to antibiotics, but the frequent use of powerful antibiotics will make you colonized with resistant bacteria, so that if you do get an infection, it’s likely to be with a difficult-totreat organism. The CT scan is a good idea to see whether there is an anatomic reason for recurrent (or persistent) infections. I am disappointed to hear your urologist does not seem to be doing his or her best for you. Recurrent infections are dangerous. Becoming foggy headed is a sign of serious systemic infection, and sepsis (a dysfunctional body response to infection) is life-threatening. Some people take antibiotics to prevent infection. Often, these are rotated to reduce resistance. A urologist experienced in spinal cord injury, perhaps in consultation with an infectious disease doctor, would be ideal.

Bravo, Teachers! I would like to recognize Alexander CSD teachers, essential staffing and all employees for the amazing job done during a challenging and uncertain school year resulting from COVID. Without your dedication and flexibility, our children would have suffered. Your efforts do not go unrecognized by the community. Thank you for all you do for the children! E. W.

Regarding a recently published article regarding proper display of the flag— I have some additional information to add to that. The flag should not be displayed at night unless lighted, nor should it be displayed during “inclement weather.” The flag should be properly disposed of when damaged or worn out (contact your Legion for details). The entire code is available on the American Legion website. Also, no drawings should be done on the US flag. This, to me, includes the superimposing of various images, animals, sports insignia, human portraits, etc. Also, personally, the use of the flag as a political statement and changing the colors on the flag is disrespectful. This is not the flag for which millions have made the ultimate sacrifice. If one wishes to show support for another organization, all of them have insignia that could be displayed on a plain banner.

Petty Rant Shame on you for your rant against our law enforcement officers. Those parking laws are in place in case of a fire or terrorism incident, and it doesn’t matter if the building is vacant. Do you think our police officers can choose which laws to enforce and when to enforce them? It’s all about public safety. Be a good citizen and follow the rules.

Neighbor’s Noisy Truck In the [local] area we have a neighbor with his very large truck that he revs out loudly on purpose and goes down the road all hours of the day and night. It’s extremely loud, and we are all afraid someone will get hit eventually. Everyone complains, but it just goes on and on. Please be considerate of your neighbors. The village is not the place for the noise or speeding, especially when you are by a school.

Hamlin Post Office I want to say that I appreciate the attention and service I get from the employees when I go in for my stamps. Sherry was kind enough to put my stamps in a large plastic sleeve to keep my five books of stamps together. It really came in handy with the large number of stamps that I purchased. With all that is going on in the world we live in, it is always nice to be treated kindly. Hamlin Post Office is the best!

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Alchemist Hennig Brand is thought to have used upwards of 1,500 gallons of human urine in his quest to make gold. After he evaporated, boiled and distilled it multiple times, it started to glow in the dark and burst into flames. He had instead discovered the element phosphorus. * “Phantom Vibration Syndrome” is the name for when someone thinks their phone is vibrating, but it isn’t. * Astronaut John Young caused a small scandal in 1965 when he smuggled a corned beef sandwich aboard Gemini 3. When he took it out in zero gravity and tried to eat it, it broke up, sending crumbs flying around the cabin. No harm was done, but the incident sparked a safety review by the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations and a statement from NASA assuring that steps had been taken “to prevent recurrence of corned beef sandwiches in future flights.” GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On July 29, 1967, a fire on the USS Forrestal stationed off the coast of Vietnam kills 134 service members. The deadly fire on the Navy carrier began with the accidental launch of an F-4 Phantom-jet rocket, which hit a parked A-4 Skyhawk jet.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “The glow of one warm thought is to me worth more than money.” -- Thomas Jefferson

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Why the U.S. Ban on Dog Imports? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been working for months to purchase a purebred dog located in Ukraine. Today, the transaction was put on hold by the breeder, who said that dog imports are being banned by the U.S. What is going on? -- Nadiya in NYC DEAR NADIYA: What happened is that dogs are being imported into the U.S. with rabies certificates that are fraudulent. After at least 450 imported dogs were found to have fake certificates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took action in June and temporarily banned the import of dogs from more than 100 countries* with a high rabies risk, including Ukraine, for at least one year. According to the CDC’s official notice, in 2020 it identified a significant increase in the number of imported dogs that were denied entry into the U.S. from high-risk countries. Due to reduced flight schedules, dogs denied entry are facing longer wait times to be returned to their country of departure, leading to illness and even death. Why did the number of fraudulent rabies certificates rise so quickly? In a word, the pandemic. During lockdown, demand for dogs (and cats) soared. Worried about the risk of animals being abandoned when their owners went back to the office, many shelters drastically raised fees and other requirements for adoption. Demand for imported dogs rose. Unfortunately, there are no options for those who intend to purchase or adopt a dog from one of these countries. If you try to import the dog anyway, or even hand-carry it across the border, it will be denied entry and shipped back home at your expense. It’s a bummer, but necessary to reduce the risk of rabies spreading in the U.S. *For a map showing banned countries, go to www.statista.com and search for “CDC bans dog imports.” To read the official notice, go to www.cdc.gov and search for “high-risk dog ban.” Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Take a good look at Disney princesses and you’ll notice that they’re all essentially attired in typical princess garb of gown, tiara, etc. But here’s a small difference you might not have picked up on -- some wear gloves, and some don’t. What’s up with that? The ladies without gloves are commoners who married into royalty.

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none who can withstand your power. Holy Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us, who have recourse to Thee. (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this in your hands. (3 times). Say this prayer 3 days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. Thank you Virgin Mary for answering my prayers. P.G.
