HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS
Pet Place _____________________6
Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

I always have great rhubarb. I take good care of it. This year it won’t fill out. It’s mostly tall & spindly. Could it be this bad spring? -Ed S. The most likely reason why your rhubarb is tall and spindly is that it is overcrowded and needs to be divided. It should be divided after about 5 years of growth. The best time to divide is in the early spring, but it can be done in the fall. Dig around the root clump and lift the entire plant. Cut down through the crown between buds, with each division having at least one bud and prefer-

Plant at same depth as the original plant was growing. Another possibility is that due to the very wet spring, if your drainage is poor, your rhubarb may be experiencing crown rot. It damages terminal buds and results in spindly, weak stems. The plant will eventually collapse.
Can peonies be divided, or should they be moved as a whole plant? – Donna Y.
Palmiter’s Garden Nursery in Avon specializes in peonies and can provide information and advice about these beautiful plants.
Peonies really do not like to have their roots disturbed, but if you must move of divide them, the best time to do so is in the fall – September or October. Once divided or moved, they may take two or three years to settle in before they bloom again.

Hearing Loss Is Treatable!
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Persistent Underarm Odor Can be Minimized
Let the experts at Professional Hearing Solutions help you get back to hearing life in high definition!
Call Dr. Christine Stein at Professional Hearing Solutions... she provides quality care in a warm, friendly environment.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have underarm odor. I wash daily, use deodorant and change my shirts daily. I use mostly cotton shirts and undershirts. I launder my shirts with soap mixed with bicarbonate sodium (baking soda) to eliminate odor. In spite of all this, deodorants seem to work for few hours and then fade away. What other solutions do you have for this problem, whether it’s what to use for the underarm or what to wash the clothes with? Thanks. -- N.I. ANSWER: Body odor comes mainly from bacteria that grow in the moist areas, like axillae (armpits). Keeping them dry and minimizing bacteria are then the ways to minimize body odor. Antiperspirant, rather than deodorant, is effective at keeping the axillae dryer. Applying at nighttime after shower or bath may be more effective. Occasional use of a topical antibiotic to the axillae can keep bacteria growth down as well. Diet can have a role, too. Sulfur-containing foods like garlic, along with onions and many curries, can cause a strong odor. As far as washing clothes, most detergents do a very good job of removing the odor-causing bacteria.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I went in for an annual examination with my primary-care doctor, and she took my blood tests in the laboratory. She told me that I have high potassium, 5.5, and had me retake it. I did, and the test came back with a much lower level of 4.3! What could have caused the level to go up so high? Was this due to eating a lot of avocado and yogurt on a daily basis? I was eating a whole avocado in the a.m. for breakfast and a yogurt with apple and peach. Should I be seeing a specialist to recheck it? Please describe potassium and its job, and advise what I should do. -A.V.R. ANSWER: Avocados and yogurt are high-potassium foods, and peaches and apples are medium-potassium foods. However, most people can take in high amounts of potassium without worry, since the kidney is very good at getting rid of potassium if the body doesn’t need it. I more often see low potassium levels, from poor intake or from medications, such as diuretics, which can cause the body to lose potassium. However, some people with kidney disease (especially severe kidney disease) need to carefully watch and limit oral potassium intake. By far the biggest reason for a potassium blood test to come out abnormally high relates to the lab itself. Samples that sit around a long time or that are shaken will have broken blood cells, which release high levels of potassium into the serum, causing false elevations in the lab. If you didn’t change your diet between the two tests, there is no reason to worry at all. Your primary doctor is the right person to see.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Does sunlight make chickenpox blisters appear more quickly? -- S.V.A.
ANSWER: I have heard that, too, but can’t find any evidence that it’s true. The rash of chickenpox certainly will come, even in darkness. Sunlight can worsen scarring from chickenpox, and the affected skin is more susceptible to burning, so those with chickenpox rash should be kept out of the sun. Chickenpox is also very contagious; restrict contact with anyone who hasn’t had it or the vaccine. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Did you know? The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Though that may seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century. On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federal holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That benefit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized as the first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries leadership qualities can help bring order out of all that confusion, whether it’s on the job or in the home. But be careful to guide, not goad, others into following you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Applying a more personal view to a job-linked issue could help provide better insight into those persistent problems. Use your keen Taurean logic to cut through the double-talk. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking some time off could be the best way to get through that seemingly endless round of demands. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle things from a new perspective. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Restoring a sagging professional relationship takes a lot of effort. By all means, state your position. But also make sure you pay close attention to the other person’s point of view. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A hot prospect intrigues the Big Cat, who is always on the prowl for a promising investment. But be careful that this “promise” has a chance of being kept. Check it out more carefully. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend could use some of your compassion and concern. If he or she doesn’t ask for help, be sure you step up and make the first move. Also, check out a new career possibility. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might have difficulty getting your opinions heard because of all the noise being made by the other side. But hang in there. Others should line up with you once they learn the facts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Offering to help a colleague is commendable. But before you commit your time and effort, check to see if that person’s situation is all that he or she has led you to believe it is. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You soon should be seeing positive results from your recent efforts on behalf of a family member. On another matter, check that you have all the facts regarding a job assignment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects favor closer family relationships this week. Take time for visits, whether in person, by phone, by mail or in cyberspace. Let them know how important they are to you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A missed opportunity isn’t always a negative. Maybe your instincts are telling you not to rush into something you “thought” was worthwhile. Make time for family this weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of humor helps you get through a tricky situation. But some stick-in-the-muds might not be so willing to make the changes that you and others agree are necessary. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making everyone you know -- or even just met -- feel important and welcome in your life. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Call/Text Brandon 585-622-1050 Simplify vacations and savor the fun Leave work behind. The United States is one of the few countries that does not guarantee paid days off. The Center for Economic and Policy Research says one in four working Americans do not get paid time off. The employment site Glassdoor notes that among those who do get paid vacations, 75 percent of employees chose not to use all of their time in 2013. By comparison, Canadians get an average of 19 days of vacation time per year. Stress about making up work or falling behind makes some professionals worry about using their vacation time, and those who do travel may stay connected to the office in some shape or form. Splitting time between leisure and work responsibilities on a vacation can be taxing and take away from the time you need to relax and recharge. Cut work ties and immerse yourself in the vacation experience.

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Maintaining a satisfactory level of disinfectant will help prevent the multiplication of bacteria and algae in the pool. Many pools are kept clean through the use of chlorine products. The ratio of chlorine to water needed to maintain the clarity of the water depends on the size of the pool, the sanitizer used, weather, sunlight and evaporation, and the pH. In many instances, the available free chlorine in a pool when tested should be between 3 and 4 ppm to offer adequate sanitation. Frequent testing will help pool owners gauge how well the pool water is holding chlorine and how to compensate if extra is needed. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Setting The Record Straight: Common Myths About Vacation Rentals (NAPSI)—Vacation rental homes are becoming increasingly popular. In fact, 89 percent of travelers who have never rented a vacation home before would consider it, according to a recent study. However, popular misconceptions prevent some people from doing so. Here are a few facts that can help. Myth #1: More space = a higher price tag. Many travelers assume vacation rentals are more expensive than traditional lodging. Think again: When you break down the price per night and per room compared to traditional accommodations, vacation rentals typically offer better value—plus, you get added living areas. Rental homes can also prove more cost effective when you average in all the convenient amenities, such as kitchens to save money on meals, or washers and dryers to cut down on baggage fees because you can pack less.
* On July 8, 1951, Paris, the capital city of France, celebrates turning 2,000 years old. However, the City of Lights was most likely founded around 250 B.C., when a Gallic tribe known as the Parisii settled an island (Ile de la Cite) in the Seine River, which runs through present-day Paris. * On July 9, 1962, Bob Dylan records "Blowin' in the Wind," although it wouldn't be released for another year. The most well-known version was done by Peter, Paul and Mary, which became a hit. * On July 10, 1985, in Auckland harbor in New Zealand, Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior sinks after French agents in diving gear plant a bomb on the ship's hull. Although French authorities denied responsibility, a British newspaper later uncovered evidence of French President Francois Mitterrand's authorization of the bombing plan.
Myth #2: I need to have a large group. Vacation rental homes come in all shapes and sizes, from studio units and condos in resort-style communities to larger, private homes with four or more bedrooms. Solo travelers, couples and families alike can enjoy rental homes for the convenience and can find the rightsized home for their needs. Myth #3: I have to stay for at least a week. Many vacation rental homes offer flexibility when it comes to length of stay. Travelers can often find rentals for weekend stays, especially during off-peak travel periods. Myth #4: You have to book far in advance. There is no set time frame for booking a rental home before your trip. While booking further in advance can give you a greater selection to choose from, there are often great last-minute deals in many popular vacation destinations for those who can’t plan as far ahead. Myth #5: If I need help, I’m on my own. This one depends on how you book your rental home. If you book directly with a homeowner through a listing site, you will have to work out any issues directly with the owner. However, if you book through a professional manager, such as Wyndham Vacation Rentals, there is someone available 24/7 to assist you and to serve as a liaison between you and the property owner. Wyndham even offers a “Vacation Rental Bill of Rights” that assures travelers that their expectations will be met. Learn more about vacation rentals at www.VacationDifferently. com. The travel resource offers great tips on family travel, ideas for vacation rental accommodations, and inspiration on a different way to travel. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10. Summer fun that is close to home Carnivals and fun fairs: Open land or empty parking lots can be transformed into bustling carnivals in a matter of days. Carnivals or fairs may be sponsored by private businesses or local religious organizations looking to raise funds. Some fairs are established by the county and attract participants from near and far. Ali-Gaiters Supports Kids at Golisano Children’s Hospital By Amanda Dudek
W
hen Jackie Klube gave birth to her daughter, Ali, 16 years ago, she knew Ali would change her life. She had no idea how right she was. Ali was born prematurely, and concerned doctors transferred her to Golisano Children’s Hospital (GCH). After further tests, GCH doctors determined that baby Ali had a hole in her heart and would need life-saving surgery. “Prior to that time, we had never had any experience with Golisano Children’s Hospital,” said mom Jackie Klube, founder of Ali-Gaiters. “We never really appreciated how important the hospital was until that time.” Ali had her surgery four months later, and when Jackie and her husband were at last able to walk out of the hospital with their baby girl, they had a new focus. “We realized that we still had our daughter, thanks to the amazing staff, surgeons, nurses and doctors at GCH,” Jackie recalled. “Thanks to that hospital, we were able to take our daughter home with a healthy heart, and we promised each other that, from that point on, we would do whatever we could to support the hospital and other children needing treatment - future Ali’s.” Klube confessed that her family originally thought this would entail things like dropping coins in fundraising jars. Then GCH held “Stroll for Strong Kids” the following June. “We formed a team to walk in Ali’s honor,” said Jackie. “We came up with Ali-Gaiters as both a play on alligator and “gait” as in walk.” Ali-Gaiters, consisting of a few close friends and family members, raised a few hundred dollars. However, when they saw the thousands of children the hospital was impacting, they wanted to do more. “Team Ali-Gaiters started holding different fundraisers, like car washes, coin collections and bake sales,” Jackie said. “That year, we also held our first annual clambake event in my backyard.” Much to Klube’s surprise, about 100 people attended. “I wasn’t expecting that many people,” she said. “We raised just over $1,000 for the hospital. That was when we realized this had growth potential.” Since then, the annual Ali-Gaiters Clam -bake has been held at the Honeoye Falls Fireman’s Training Grounds. “We were on a mission at that point,” Jackie recalled. “We were determined to raise more money.” Five years into their fundraising efforts, (l-r) Ali & Nate at the Stroll for Strong Kids Klube’s sister and only sibling gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Nathan, who had a much more serious congenital heart defect than Ali’s. “Until then, we never thought the difference we were making would also be within our own family,” said Jackie. “That year at our annual clambake event, we started recognizing and honoring other GCH children in our communities.” “We took our goals beyond fundraising,” said Jackie. “We wanted to draw awareness to how important the hospital is and how many children it impacts.” Guests of Honor - children impacted by GCH - attend the annual clambakes, which are always held on the second weekend in June. “We started the clambake in honor of Ali,” said Jackie. “Now, we honor and remember other children whose lives have been impacted by the hospital, as well.” Ali-Gaiters donates its clambake funds to various areas of Golisano’s Children’s Hospital. “Our annual Ali-Gaiters Clambake on June 8th was our biggest

ever,” Jackie said. “Just under 1,200 people attended. It has grown a lot from 100 people in my backyard!” Although Ali-Gaiters has not made its official donation to GCH this year, Klube estimates it will contribute around $30,000 which will go to the new Pediatric Behavioral Health & Wellness Center at GCH. “That will put us at over $300,000 since we started,” she added. Even in the midst of its fundraising success, Ali-Gaiters focuses on its primary mission of creating awareness within the community. “Having another GCH child within our own family really opened our eyes,” said Jackie. “We felt that we could increase awareness and demonstrate how important GCH is to our community by bringing in these Guests of Honor.” Posters of such guests, both past and present, are displayed at the clambakes, along with each child’s story. “Once a poster is made, it goes up every year,” said Jackie. “Some children have since passed away, but we continue to remember them, and their parents share their stories.” The community response has been extraordinary. “I am amazed at people’s generosity,” Jackie said. “Around 90% of the food at our clambakes is donated, including clams, pulled pork, hamburgers, hotdogs and all kinds of salads and desserts. The support we receive that way is just phenomenal!” Ali-Gaiters also receives financial sponsorships from businesses along with baskets and prizes for raffles which are donated by area businesses and neighbors. “People come out and support -Jackie Klube, us year after year,” Jackie said. Ali-Gaiters founder “It warms my heart.” “I am also amazed by those families who share their own stories and those of their loved ones,” Jackie said. “It is a very private, personal thing to share a story like that, and for them to be willing to share in order to create awareness is simply incredible.” Attendees are making a difference, too. “Just by coming out for the clambake, buying raffle tickets, they’re making a difference.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Thank you to the good Samaritan who left a note on our SUV on 6/5 in Wegmans parking lot about the nail in our tire. We do not know who you are, so we cannot thank you personally, but it was very much appreciated. We were able to get it fixed that day and not get a surprise later. So again, thank you! A particular weed and grass killer contains [a chemical] which is said to be carcinogenic to humans. Why is there not a ban on spraying it? After six years of exposure to this chemical, there could be significant factors affecting one’s health. So, why does the landlord keep spraying this chemical around the well? This well is used by the renters daily for everyday needs. What about liability?

was fine, but the other women asked her why the dog was barking, and she said it was because the dog was nervous because of the two girls standing there. My daughters were not yelling or talking loudly or running around, they were just calmly walking around with the rabbit. The woman had no right to yell at them, telling them to leave. They were not disturbing anyone. If you want the dog to be quiet then take him away from the window so he doesn’t get “nervous” at two girls walking around.

So-called climate change sounds like some quasiscience in order to drum up more money. Seasonal change is really what it is. It happens all the time, and the Earth will survive. It has for millions of years, anyway. What is making more negative ‘climate change’ are the oodles of wind and solar farms. Nature has survived for eons without solar farms and wind farms, which do not help the problem at all and make it worse. A moratorium should be put in place to stop them from being built.

If you love nature, let nature shine; don’t ruin it with ugly structures. I was surprised to see that vitriolic rant entitled, “Be a Mother,” about the widow of two years. Whoever wrote that is so judgmental and lacking in compassion. I’m sure they think of themselves as a caring Christian. Haven’t they heard “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone?” It has to be tough enough to be a young widow without some nosy neighbor second guessing every parenting decision you make. Shame on whoever wrote that.

Yields 11 servings For pork: 2 teaspoons expeller-pressed grapeseed or canola oil 3.15 pounds Boston butt, cut into 3 pieces along natural muscle separation, trimmed of surface fat 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup vermouth, rice wine or dry sherry 2 1/2 cups thinly sliced red cabbage 1 small onion, sliced (about 1 cup) 3 tablespoons molasses (or honey) 2 tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons minced garlic 2 tablespoons minced ginger 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds For cucumbers: 1 tablespoon honey 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons rice vinegar 2 large cucumbers, peeled, cut in half lengthwise, seeded with a spoon, thinly sliced 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper To assemble: 11 soft whole-wheat hamburger buns 2 3/4 cups mungbean sprouts To make the pork: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the oil. Season the pork on all sides with salt and pepper. When oil begins to shimmer, add pork and brown on all sides, about 4 minutes per side. Add browned pork to a slow cooker. Off of the heat, add the vermouth and then place on low heat, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon. Add contents of the skillet to the slow cooker, along with cabbage, onion, molasses, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and sesame seeds. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour; then reduce heat to low and cook for 4 hours (alternatively, cook the pork on low for the entire duration, 6 to 7 hours). To make the cucumbers: One hour before serving, in a medium bowl, stir and dissolve the honey and salt into the rice vinegar and then add the cucumbers and pepper. Chill. To assemble: Toast the buns cut side up under a broiler or in a toaster oven. Fill the buns with pork, drained cucumbers and bean sprouts.
