STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS

Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES

Make your own meals. Meal plans may be ideal for college students during their freshmen years, when students may still be adjusting to campus life. But older college students can skip the meal plan in favor of preparing their own meals. Doing so can save students substantial amounts of money, and some students may even prefer the variety available at the local grocery store over the more limited offerings available at dining halls or other campus eateries.

How do you move an establishedgrapevine?

There are important factors to keep in mind when attempting to move an established grapevine:

1.Timing–Yourbestchanceofsuccess involves moving the grapevine when it is dormant (after the leaves have dropped in late fall through early spring, before the buds begin to swell).

2. Pruning—Cut back all the long canes to the main stem, leaving 3 to 6 inch stubs with 2-3 buds each.

3. Digging—Start digging down

around the vine up to 3 feet from the stem (depending on the size of the grapevine). Grape roots are fibrous and extensive, growing out shallowly and deeply searching for moisture.Try not to damage the roots as much as possible, loosening the soil between the roots. Prune off any broken root ends.

4. Plant in a suitably prepared hole using the same soil from the hole to carefully cover the spread-out roots. You don’t need to fertilize the planting until the second year.A nice compost mulch on top is fine.

5. Keep the new planting watered about every other day until the ground freezes (fall) or in spring until spring rains take over.

I prefer early spring planting. There is less chance of winter damage (cold drying winds, animal damage, etc.). Planting a young rooted grape cutting or grafted cutting is much easier and usually more successful

than transplanting an older vine, but I fully understand the desire to keep a favorite grape variety growing in a new location. You may consider keeping some of the cuttings from the original vine and rooting them as insurance in case the original fails to thrive.Good luck!

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

* On Aug. 16, 1841, President John Tyler vetoes a second attempt by Congress to re-establish the Bank of the United States. In response, angry supporters of the bank, many from his own party, the Whigs, burned an effigy of Tyler outside the White House.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS

Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

Shout Out

A huge shout out and a big thank you to the Village of Avon and the Avon Village crew who did an awesome job in upgrading the Avon Driving Park. The new sidewalks and the well-manicured grounds are beautiful. Everything prepared a warm welcome to the 2nd annual Avon Driving Park Pleasure Show sponsored by the Western NY Combined Carriage Association. Thank you!

Big Thank You

To the DOT, Contractor and crews that repaved Dansville Streets. They did a very good job under difficult conditions of traffic and weather with very little interference to the business on main street.

Unbelievable amount of wasted time

If my neighbors dedicated as much time to eradicating cancer and other critical issues facing this country as they do their landscaping, these problems would be an issue of the past without a doubt. Cutting your grass 4-5 times a week? Are you kidding me? It’s proven these pesticides being used on your yards cause cancer, not to mention it’s gas exhaust going into the atmosphere. I told my wife to leave me if I spent this much of my time on green grass. Weeds in my yard!? Blasphemy! Would rather live my life and enjoy my family. Call me crazy.

Wrongfully Accused

To the lady in front of me in the white SUV at the [fast food restaurant] drive thru Saturday 7/22 at 7:00am that yelled at me “it’s inconsiderate to smoke in the drive thru” and complain about me to staff at the pick up window and then speed off like lightening, I’ve got news for you-I DON’T SMOKE! WHAT TO DO BEFORE TRADING IN YOUR CAR

Hone your negotiation skills. Dealers may initially offer less than drivers expect, as they, too, will try to make the transaction as beneficial as possible to their bottom lines. In such situations, drivers who want to get a better trade-in value should be prepared to negotiate. Some dealerships may not budge on their initial trade-in values, but some might, and drivers prepared to negotiate a better value are in the best position to get a good deal.

Warning signs a tire is about to go flat

Varying wear: Tires should exhibit the same type of wear. The wear on front tires and back tires may differ, but one front tire should have the same amount of wear as the other and the same goes for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that the tire with more wear could be about to go out.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute, roughly 10 percent of all highway deaths involve large trucks. Braking capability can play a role in such deaths, as the IIHS notes that loaded tractortrailers take between 20 and 40 percent farther than cars to fully stop. That discrepancy is even greater on poorly maintained roads or roads marked by adverse conditions such as ice, rain and/ or snow. While 16 percent of the roughly 3,600 people who died in large truck crashes in the United States in 2014 were truck occupants, more than four times that many people (68 percent) were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles. That’s because large trucks typically weigh 20 to 30 times more than passenger vehicles, meaning occupants in cars and passenger trucks are incredibly susceptible to serious injury or death should they get in accidents with tractor-trailers and other large trucks. Time of day also must be considered when examining large truck crashes and fatalities. While 17 percent of deaths in 2014 took place between the hours of noon and 3 p.m., that figure dropped to 11 percent between the typical rush hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Barbie Fashion Show Reminds Us of Fashions of Yesteryear and Encourages All to Love Ourselves

In celebration of the hotly anticipated Barbie movie, e Strong National Museum of Play hosted a Barbie-themed fashion show, “America’s Favorite Fashion Doll” on July 22nd and 23rd. Produced by Mary erese Friel Modeling Agency, this show featured models of all ages from the Rochester area.

Mary erese Friel, President of the Agency, said, “ e release of e Barbie movie provides a wonderful opportunity for us to share this phenomenal show with the community again. In true Barbie fashion, the wardrobe is fun, fancy, dramatic, and very couture.”

e Barbie fashion show truly brought the doll to life.

Models from the MTF Agency showcased a wide variety of Barbieinspired fashions, from everyday wear to formal gowns, even an iconic wedding gown. Minis, midis, maxis, oh my! Out ts featured a variety of fabrics and patterns, simple to extravagant, adorned tastefully to match, all maximizing the Barbie-like air.

roughout the show, guests reminisced about fashion from yesteryear through today. Guests even experienced the full fashion show experience with a meet and greet with the models, who graciously posed for photos and signed autographs for their adoring fans. What an incredible experience for our community.

Friel notes that the new movie “has created a deeper conversation about self-love. I want people to embrace and respect and love themselves.” Friel explains that the fashion show intended to re ect the movie’s positive selflove message.

e fashion show was inspired by e Strong Museum’s extensive Barbie collection. With “the world’s most comprehensive collection of toys, dolls, board games, …” e Strong o ers “a unique and educational window into the critical role of play in physical, social, and intellectual development, and the ways in which play re ects cultural history.” Psychologists and specialists from across the world ock to e Strong to view this glimpse of Americans’ history of play.

Curators and historians at e Strong pride themselves on cra ing collections to help guests relive their childhoods. According to e Strong, “90% of American girls own at least one Barbie doll, and the average girl owns 10.” In 1988, Barbie was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame, which “recognizes toys that have inspired creative play and enjoyed popularity over a sustained period.” e Strong’s collection features myriad di erent Barbie dolls from the years since its creation in 1959. Inspired by her daughter’s paper dolls, Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel, Inc., sought to make a more fun and interactive, threedimensional teen/adult doll people could adorn with the latest fashions. Going beyond the baby dolls children enjoyed, Handler created Barbie, the teenage fashion model, a “grown-up doll with a

stunning wardrobe.” According to History, in March 1959, the doll named Barbie, short for Barbara Millicent Roberts, launched onto the American toy market, becoming the rst mass-produced toy doll in the US with adult features. Barbie sales soared with each annual addition of dolls and latest fashions.

According to Mattel, “Barbie inspires the limitless potential in every girl,” and Mattel and its Barbie line strive to encourage imaginative play and role-playing, prompting children “to discuss their thoughts about others’ emotions,” which “can have positive, long-lasting e ects, developing social processing skills like empathy.” As children play with Barbie dolls in their imaginative worlds, they process and envision the real world.

According to the rst neuroimaging study by Cardi University and Barbie, “when playing with dolls, children use increased language about others’ thoughts and emotions, [which] allows them to practice social skills they can use when interacting with people in the real world.” In today’s world, increased empathy is crucial, so hopefully children will continue to play with dolls and other interactive handheld toys.

Barbie has changed over the years to become more inclusive of the wide variety of people on earth. e symbol has generated incredible criticism over the years as well, with particular focus on body type and skin color stereotypes, but this criticism inspired the manufacturer to commit “to boosting girls’ self-esteem and gave Barbie a cosmopolitan sense and expanded career options.” Barbie has a wide array of abilities and interests, re ecting more of the variety in humans. Keeping their eyes set on the original focus of the doll as a fashion doll, Mattel has concocted a myriad of choices for children to enjoy throughout the years.

With Barbie now on people’s minds again, perhaps the current generation of children will again let their imaginations soar, and children of all ages, genders, abilities, and lifestyles will reconnect with their self-love and respect.

Here’s a tip

To help our children learn the placement of states, we glued a map to a piece of cardboard, then used a razor knife to cut each state out along its lines. is created a puzzle. It made learning the states fun, and we wrote the capitals on the backs, so we learned those, too.-- M.A. in Georgia

Keep extra magazines in the car to read when you have to wait or while sitting in line at the bank or fast-food drivethrough.

I purchased extra-large safety pins and used scraps of fabric to designate towels for family members. I wrote each of our names in washable ink on several ‘tags,’ which are then attached to our bathing towel. I can tell in an instant who has le his or her towel on the oor/bed/etc. And I am washing a lot less towels now. -- D.L. in Ohio

PAW’S CORNER

Who’s liable when a dog bites a dog sitter?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a sweet little mixed Terrier named Cookie who’s devoted to me. He’s not so devoted to other people, and he barks at strangers and other dogs. Recently, I had to take a business trip and could not bring Cookie with me. So I paid a local dog sitter to come and visit each day.

e sitter messaged me on the rst day and said that he would not be continuing to take care of Cookie because my dog bit him when he tried to put on his halter. I had to scramble and call in favors for a family member to go and get Cookie for the week.

On top of this, the sitter wants me to pay his medical bill because he says it’s my fault the dog bit him. I say the sitter inconvenienced me, and it’s not my liability. What do you think? -- Carl in San Diego

DEAR CARL: Ouch! I’m sorry this happened to you, and to the sitter who was bitten. Situations like this can get complicated, especially when you weren’t there to witness what happened.

Remain calm and try to get as much information from the sitter and from your relative as possible about what happened, and about Cookie’s behavior while you were gone.

In California, courts have usually taken the view that, like dog groomers, pet sitters and walkers accept that there is a risk of being bitten by a dog in their line of work (www.sallymorinlaw.com/dog-bites/whos-liable-if-a-dog-bites-me-whenits-with-a-dog-sitter/). It seems like this is the case here, but I am not an attorney. If you feel that this situation is going to escalate into a lawsuit, consult an attorney before deciding what to do next.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Learning the Signs That Lead to COPD

DEAR DR. ROACH: What signs and/or symptoms do you need for a doctor to determine whether you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)? -- R.K.

ANSWER: The diagnosis of COPD is suspected in people who are at risk for the disease and note one of two cardinal symptoms: cough or dyspnea. (A “symptom” is what a patient identifies by history, while a “sign” is noted on a physical exam. A cough can be both a symptom and a sign.) Dyspnea is usually described as shortness of breath, a sensation that a person can’t get enough air, like they have just run very fast. Some people with COPD may have very subtle symptoms.

Smoking is the biggest risk factor for COPD, but there are other causes, including other chemical exposures (industrial exposures and home cooking fires are less common now, but are historically important causes of COPD); scarring lung disease; and a genetic cause, a condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.

The diagnosis is confirmed most often by tests of lung function, which are breathing tests to look at the physiology of the lung and its ability to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Sometimes the diagnosis can be supported by an X-ray or CT scan, but pulmonary function testing is the best way to determine the severity of COPD.

We do have ways of slowing down lung decline in COPD, one way being smoking cessation for current smokers, but some of the medications we use also help reduce ongoing damage.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Please help! Is it true that Trulicity may cause serious side effects, including thyroid tumors and cancer, as well as pancreatitis? -- J.R.

ANSWER: Dulaglutide (Trulicity), like semaglutide (Ozembic) and liraglutide (Victoza), are in a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which have several actions, such as increasing insulin release by the pancreas in response to meals. Initial studies on laboratory rats did show an increase in an unusual type of thyroid cancer, but studies have not yet shown an increased rate in humans. Still, people at an increased risk for this type of thyroid cancer (having a family history of medullary thyroid cancer or of multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2A or 2B) are not recommended to take this medication. Similarly, there are reports of pancreatitis in people taking this medication, but it isn’t clear whether the medicine is responsible for the pancreatitis. It’s unwise to use this class of medication in people with a history of pancreatitis.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN

Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER

The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises.

According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK

Reading: Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 percent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading.
