PITCH IN AND SAVE MONEY Salvage: Removing debris and items that will no longer be needed once the renovation is complete is another way homeowners can pitch in. Homeowners remodeling their kitchens may be replacing their existing stoves and refrigerators and hoping to donate these items. In such instances, driving the items to the donation site or arranging for them to be picked up rather than taken off the premises by the contractor or his employees can cut labor costs, as it allows laborers to keep working toward the end goal rather than requiring them to leave the work site to drop unwanted items off.

HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Install windows films. Plastic window films are another option for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their windows. Heat shrink film can be cut to fit each individual leaky window in a home and then attached to windows using double-sided tape. A hair dryer can then be used to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. Low-emissivity, or Low-E, coatings are a more expensive alternative to heat shrink film, and they can be equally effective at improving energy efficiency. Installation of Low-E coatings can be more difficult, as they do not provide as much leeway for mistakes during application as heat shrink film.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

And available for emergencies and curbside services as well as new patients during our normal business hours. Due to COVID-19 we are taking extra precautions and seeing patients by appointment only.

Pulmonary Fibrosis Needs Exact Diagnosis --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was recently diagnosed with mild to moderate pulmonary fibrosis. His mother died from pulmonary fibrosis. From what we have read there is no cure, only palliative care. The thought of doing nothing to try to stop the progression is totally unacceptable when there have been such successes with immunotherapy and stem cells. Would he receive more aggressive treatment going to a pulmonary fibrosis care center that has lung disease programs? -- C.D. ANSWER: There are several diseases that may cause fibrosis of the lung, so having an exact diagnosis made by an expert is critical for getting the right treatment. The most common type of pulmonary fibrosis is called “idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis” (it also has been called “usual interstitial pneumonia” and “cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis”), and I am going to discuss that diagnosis. The cause of IPF is unknown (both “idiopathic” and “cryptogenic” mean “of unknown cause”), but cigarette smoking is a risk factor. It is usually diagnosed in people who are their 50s and 60s, although some familial cases may come on earlier. IPF can run in families. Although it is a rare disease, it seems to be on the rise. The major symptoms are cough and shortness of breath. There is no cure for IPF, but there are treatments available. Two drugs, pirfenidone and nintedanib, are approved for use in the U.S. and Canada. Both of them slow progression of lung disease, reduce exacerbations and have been proven to reduce mortality from the condition, if only slightly. I am concerned that you and your husband apparently haven’t heard of these drugs. I strongly advise you get a referral to a center for lung disease in order to get your husband the best care. I found 35 IPF trials recruiting patients in the U.S. and six in Canada. A clinical trial will help scientists understand this condition as well as determine the best current treatment. You also can find out what centers have expertise on this condition by seeing where the trials are conducted at www.clinicaltrials.gov. The most aggressive treatment isn’t always the best, but you and your husband deserve to hear about all the options. The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation can help you find experienced centers for treating this condition. You can find them online at www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My niece recently was diagnosed with breast cancer. Radiation was recommended. Her mother said that first she’d have to boost her immune system. Is it possible to actually do that? -- P.P.L. ANSWER: Radiation is a common treatment after breast cancer surgery. It’s done to reduce the risk of recurrence, depending on the exact type of cancer. Boosting the immune system is a new adjunct for many types of cancer. There are several ways to do this: One is to genetically modify the patient’s own immune T-cells, but many other techniques are in trials now. However, if your niece’s mother is talking about supplements, I’d be cautious. Supplements that are promoted to boost the immune system generally are ineffective at doing so. Making sure your niece has proper nutrition, gets good sleep and experiences as little stress as is manageable are ways to prevent stress on the immune system. Everyone could benefit from those deceptively simple steps, but especially a person being treated for cancer. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Dark circles may result from pigmentation changes that occur after exposure to the sun or some other type of UV light. Individuals who apply sunscreen on their faces, including around their eyes, may be able to reduce or prevent pigment changes.

MOVING SAFELY DURING THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS (NAPSI) — If you and your family plan to move soon, you’ll be pleased to know that moving is considered an essential service. How professional movers go about that, however, varies from state to state and the manner and degree to which they’re enforcing social distancing and permitting businesses to operate if they’re considered essential. So, if you or someone you know needs to move, the experts at the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) recommend you regularly check such resources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stay up-to-date on the latest news. Smart Moves To keep consumers and movers healthy and safe during the pandemic, AMSA offers these 10 moving-time facts and tips: 1.For the health of your family and moving crew, always follow CDC guidelines. 2.Work directly with your movers to determine the best time and method for your move. 3.The moving company you choose should alert you if there are any disruptions in service as a result of federal or state action. 4.Help your movers serve you in the safest way possible. Notify them ahead of time if anyone in your household may have contracted coronavirus, or may have been exposed to someone who has. 5.Check your professional mover’s website and feel free to ask questions on how the company is mitigating health risks. 6.If you’ll feel more comfortable, ask if your professional mover can provide virtual estimates, rather than one based on an in-home visit. 7.Try to provide your moving crew access to a sink, soap, and paper towels throughout your move. If this isn’t practical, provide hand sanitizer or wipes. 8.If you plan to prepack any items, purchase new moving boxes and tape from your mover; this isn’t the time to use recycled boxes from online sources, or from stores. 9.Your mover may also have plastic bins available for rental. Wipe down the interior and exterior with a disinfecting wipe before packing anything in them. 10. Consider deep cleaning your new home before unpacking to mitigate further the risk of contracting disease. Learn More: For further information, go to www.moving.org and follow @amsapromover on social media.

The good news: Lead poisoning is 100% preventable.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Keyboard-Loving Cat Sees Computer as Rival

Take these steps to make your home lead-safe. Talk with your child’s doctor about a simple blood lead test. If you are pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor about exposure to sources of lead. Talk with your local health department about testing paint and dust in your home for lead if you live in a home built before 1978. Renovate safely. Common renovation activities (like sanding, cutting, replacing windows, and more) can create hazardous lead dust. If you’re planning renovations, use contractors certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (visit www.epa.gov/lead for information). Remove recalled toys and toy jewelry from children and discard as appropriate. Stay up-to-date on current recalls by visiting the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website: www. cpsc.gov.

Dehydration is a dangerous condition that can cause a host of complications and even prove fatal in severe cases. But as dangerous as dehydration can be, many cases are entirely preventable. The best way to prevent dehydration is to drink enough water. When the body does not take in as much water as it puts out, it can become dehydrated. People who live in warm climates or in elevated altitudes may lose more water than those who do not. In addition, water loss is accelerated during strenuous exercise, highlighting the emphasis men and women must place on drinking enough water during their workouts. Water helps the body in myriad ways, many of which might surprise people unaware of just how valuable water can be to the body.

Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Whenever I’m videoconferencing from home, my cat insists on jumping into my lap and pawing at the screen and the keyboard. If I put him outside the room, he will meow loudly and nonstop until I let him back in. Once the call is finished, he quiets down and goes away. To my co-workers, this is just a funny distraction, but I worry that it will have a negative impression on clients. How can I calm him down? -Melanie in Pittsburgh DEAR MELANIE: This is a tough one that many cat owners have faced. And now that so many of us are exclusively working from home, it’s going to continue -- unless you take some proactive steps. Cats jump onto your keyboard because they know it gets your attention. They’re not trying to figure out how to write social media posts. They just want you to pay as much attention to them as you do to the laptop screen. And locking a cat out of the room can trigger separation anxiety or just plain frustration that they can’t get in to be with you. Try this: Before a video call, give your cat 10 to 20 minutes of undivided attention. Pet him, play with his favorite toys, scratch his belly. This may help stop or reduce the number of times he jumps into your lap. Use positive reinforcement to teach your cat to do more of what you want and less of the things you don’t want him to do. To learn more about this training method, go to napahumane.org and search for “cats, positive reinforcement training.” Its basic premise is to reward your cat when he does something right. mom and dad’s cottage. They acted quickly and decisively to pull him out of the water before calling 911 because my dear friend knew she had to get him out of the water. With help from her son-in-law and others, they brought him back to life and saved my son. We never know when we will witness the hand of God, but He is and was in Honeoye that day and worked a miracle through my friends. Praise God Almighty!

My son, Troy, was found THANK YOU FOR face down, not breathing, and YOUR KINDNESS blue in the lake in front of my I want to thank the two ladies

INEFFICIENCY I am 39 years old. I have grown up around dogs, and my dad used to adopt from (local shelter) years ago. (Local shelter) now forces you to make an appointment to even enter the building. I saw two dogs on their website that I wanted to look at, so I made an appointment that put me a week out. By the day of the appointment, the two dogs I was interested in were already adopted. The whole point of making the appointment was to view these dogs. What a completely inefficient way of conducting your operations, and don’t you dare blame it on coronavirus. I don’t appreciate having my time wasted. Am I left to assume I have to make an appointment and hope there happens to be a dog I want at that moment, or else I’m out of luck? You are making adoptions more difficult than they have to be!

ABUSING HOTELS AND MOTELS I manage a hotel in (local town) and want to vent about unacceptable behavior I’ve observed over the last 7 years. Local people, almost exclusively from (local city), will reserve a room by pooling money amongst 6-10 friends to afford the room. Once in the hotel, they play loud music, smoke, come in & out throughout the night, have parties, making excessive noise. They bring many non-guests to the swimming pool, and we’ve needed to shut down our pool on several occasions because of poor water quality. They have absolutely no consideration for our other valued guests. Here’s a suggestion to those trashing our hotels: stay at one of your friends’ houses, smoke, drink and make as much noise as you want. Don’t do it in a hotel!

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

IN RESPONSE TO NOSY NEIGHBOR Upon reading the post, I don’t feel that the person was nosy or spying. You also stated that the person makes the rules on his property. Well, in the times we live in, I think, in some ways, that is changing. As the Governor stated long ago, no one has the right to make anyone else sick with corona virus. They are enforcing wearing a mask, if you haven’t noticed, also social distancing. I would be disturbed if I saw neighbors, whomever, blatantly disobeying common sense things, such as social distancing, and the wearing of masks. That does not make a person nosy, just alert to what is going on in their surroundings. Disobeying such things as having a large group over your house, without social distancing, nor masks, can potentially be life threatening to the rest of us.

Page 21

that came to my aid after I fell in the parking lot of McDonalds in Dansville on August 5th. They were so kind, helpful and attentive. They got the store employee, blocked incoming traffic until the police and ambulance arrived. When I was placed into the ambulance, my husband went to get their names, and they were already gone. But I will never forget their kindness. As I now recover from a fractured hip and sprained wrist, thinking of them makes me

MUSIC This is for “Turn down your music”. You really can’t complain much since it was during day. If it bothered you so much you should have gone over to ask them to turn it down in a nice way. And you have to consider that these days music may help a person deal with all that is going on. I know it does me at times. Also, that person may have a hearing loss you don’t know about. As for taste of music being different, everyone has a different taste of music they like. You can’t change that. That’s for sure. If it goes on into the night, then call the police.

Getting Through the Day Some random thoughts for getting through the day. Have you heard of custom puzzles? They’re available at a number of places online. (Read the reviews before you order and look for U.S. companies.) Select a favorite vacation or family photo, decide on the size of the puzzle and the number of pieces, send in your order and you’ll get back all the pieces to create a puzzle of that image. Call the company first to be sure of the details. Buy stamps by mail and stay out of the post office. Ask the local post office to have your mail carrier bring out a stamp order form and envelope. Check off the ones you want, write a check payable to Postmaster and slide it into the envelope. Leave it in your outgoing mail and within a few days your stamps will be delivered to you. If you miss playing chess with others, you can play online. See www.chess.com/play/computer and play against the computer. Better yet, play against a pal using an old-school method: set up a board on each end and send your moves to each other via email. On the other hand, too many people are trying to cut their own hair nowadays since too many salons and barber shops are closed. If you think you want to cut your own hair, don’t. If you really insist you need to cut your hair and haven’t done it before, go online to YouTube and watch a few dozen how-to videos about cutting hair. Then rethink your plan again. Whatever you do, don’t use regular kitchen or paper scissors. If you have to do this, invest in proper haircutting shears.

Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

(The History Channel) TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

Wild Wings Educates on Wildlife at Mendon Ponds Nature Center By Amanda Dudek

M

any Greater Rochester area residents have likely heard of Wild Wings, a not-for-profit educational wildlife organization. However, many are not aware of what they do, how they are funded and the crucial role they play for area wildlife. Jessica Kozakiewicz, a Wild Wings volunteer with over 10 years of experience, fills readers in on the organization’s mission, challenges, new happenings and more. Wild Wings is not a wildlife rehabilitator, but rather, they give animals a home after rehabilitation. “We provide a home for animals which have already been rehabilitated and have been deemed non-releasable,” said Kozakiewicz. Wild Wings primarily cares for injured birds of prey which are unable to survive on their own in the wild such as eagles, hawks, falcons, vultures, and owls. “Any animal that is non-releasable is typically euthanized,” she explained. “Rather than let that happen, we give them a permanent home, and they partner with us for education.” In fact, Wild Wings’ mission is to “teach environmental stewardship through programs featuring [its] resident raptors as [its] teaching partners.” Volunteers, trainers and handlers travel with some of these birds of prey to present at schools and events. Kozakiewicz participates in training, handling and educational programs which now have another facility from which to serve the community: the Mendon Ponds Nature Center within Mendon Ponds Park. Wild Wings, currently houses and cares for 34 permanently injured non-releasable birds of prey. “These birds are of various species, both native and non-native to New York State,” shared Kozakiewicz. “We now

house injured songbirds in our new aviary, providing visitors with a new educational experience. We have also had a bobcat for the last several years.” “We just took in two new fox kits, which is new for us at Wild Wings,” shared Kozakiewicz. “We plan to have a good variety of reptiles that you would see in the park, such as a number of snakes, turtles, frogs, toads and fish species.” Wild Wings hosts educational programs and hikes, as well, where visitors can learn about animals and the environment, although things have been difficult in 2020. “COVID has certainly been challenging,” Kozakiewicz acknowledged. “It closed our facility down, and we weren’t able to have the public come through. We are also on a lease agreement for the Nature Center, and while many people believe we are funded through Monroe County or other government agencies, we are not. We are funded entirely by donations with some help from the fees of our educational programs. We had to cancel some of our larger fundraising events and lost several fundraising opportunities.” Kozakiewicz believes Wild Wings and the impact it has had and continues to have on wildlife education and conservation is too important to let fall by the wayside. “At Wild Wings, people get to see the world as they haven’t before,” she explained. “They get to know our resident birds and other animals. When people leave us, they can identify birds on these park trails and realize why some of them are helpful to humans. They

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

want to protect these species in the wild, preserving them in the natural world.” It appears to be working. “One of the best examples of human wildlife conservation is what has happened with our local bald eagle population,” shared Kozakiewicz. “They were almost completely extinct, in large part due to the use of the pesticide, DDT. The bald eagle populations were very low, and people realized this was a threat. They joined together, stopped widespread use of DDT, and encouraged numbers to grow. Today, there are bald eagle populations on Lake Ontario and every single Finger Lake.” It is imperative, then, that Wild Wings continues providing for these birds in need as well as for its education programs which help people appreciate them. “We are looking at different ways to be able to offer more private, individualized group settings for now,” said Kozakiewicz. “The nature center is one of our biggest expansions yet, and we are working hard to be able to offer it this fall. We plan to talk about the different trails in the park, its ecology, and which species are found within the park. Also, we are always very open to things visitors would like to see and learn about with regards to the animals we care Jessica Kozakiewicz with Kisonsen for.” “It has always been so inspiring to me to work up close with these amazing animals,” Kozakiewicz added on a more personal note. “I feel such a sense of pride that I get to share this knowledge with all our visitors, to help them to see something new and inspiring in the world around them, as well.” Like many not-for-profit organizations, however, the future of Wild Wings, its educational efforts, and the magnificent birds they care for will depend in many ways on the support of those who share its love for these incredible birds of prey, songbirds and other wildlife. “We are almost completely supported by the generosity of public donations,” affirmed Kozakiewicz. “Our supporters can be assured that, as a primarily volunteer-run organization, funds donated to us are going to our animals and furthering our mission of education, allowing it and us to continue.” “We are a local, grassroots organization built by the community for the community,” said Kozakiewicz. “Those who donate can clearly see the impact of their investment in us.” Enjoy this article? ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Roller coasters are a staple of amusement parks, and even though the first patent for a roller coaster was issued to LaMarcus Thompson in 1885, it’s believed modern roller coasters descended from winter sled rides made popular in the 17th century in St. Petersburg, Russia. Called “Russian Mountains,” these thrill rides took place on icy hills that may have reached as high as 200 feet in the air.

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS Contact your credit card company. Many companies have programs designed to help customers facing financial hardships. Reach out promptly to let them know you may be anticipating missed payments. It is better if you initiate contact rather than going into default. The same tactic can be used for mortgage or rent payments.

It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.

GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity.

Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed. Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.
