College students have a few different living options at their disposal, but many opt for dormitory living, as it is one of the more convenient and popular boarding options, particularly for out-of-town students. Thousands of post-secondary students pack up their belongings and move away from home in the pursuit of an education, and parents want to do what they can to ensure their college-aged kids are safe.

We Want Your Photos! SPORTS • EVENTS CELEBRATIONS VACATIONS

For many students, college represents the first time they will live anywhere other than the homes they grew up in. Dorm life can be an exciting adventure, but it can also be one that may open new college students up to inherently risky situations.

While students should look forward to fun and excitement at school, it’s also important for them to be prepared for what lies ahead at college and in dorm life - and to take the proper safety precautions. Use common sense and trust your instincts with regard to dorm safety. Make college memories good ones by emphasizing caution.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES Buy secondhand furnishings. College students living in their own apartments or dorm rooms may not have the financial resources to purchase new furniture. Rather than purchasing brand new items they are likely to discard after moving out or graduating, college students can purchase secondhand items from local thrift stores or used furniture retailers that offer sturdy furnishings at low prices.

ach summer for the past 19 years, crowds have gathered at Frederick Farms to appreciate its acres of sunflower fields. Every August, their tall waves of sunshine bring a ray of comfort into the lives of those at the House of John, a hospice nonprofit in Clifton Springs. The House of John mission, “to provide compassionate care, offering sensitivity and support for people as they approach the end of their lives,” has personal meaning for the Frederick family. They have had close friends and family cared for there, including a close friend of Mr. Frederick. Young Jaimee Frederick is third generation in her family, although their dairy farm has had the Frederick name since 1940. “On two weekends in August, usually the second and third weekends, weather permitting, we raise money for the House of John,” said Frederick. “I have been helping since about 1st grade! I would help my dad by picking the flowers, parking cars, being our tour guide, and now, I basically organize it all.”

“We also have wagon hayrides at certain times,” said Frederick. “This year, for the first time, we offered pony rides on our miniature horses.” Frederick Farms also houses goats, chickens and barn cats. Jaimee Frederick brought out her show animals this year as well. “The kids loved the pony rides, and they always love seeing the animals,” she said. “I competed this year at the Ontario County Fair, and I will be going on to the New York State Fair. All of the cows I took actually won.” Frederick herself won Master Showmanship in the Open Show while her niece, who showed for the first time, won Novice Showmanship in the 4H Show. The Frederick Farms sunflower event is free to all, and donations are welcome. The Frederick Family also sells sunflower oil, which is pressed from their sunflower seeds by Stony Brook Farms in Geneva. “They sell it under their label, and we have it bottled with the name of our farm to sell ourselves. Our farm is the only place you can get it with our Frederick Farms label.” Freshly cut sunflowers, sunflower seeds for birds, bottled water and fresh baked goods

A tractor drives through acres of sunflower fields at Frederick Farms

are also available for purchase during these weekends. “The baked goods are purchased from Sweet Blessings in Shortsville and Vanilla Bean in Phelps,” said Frederick. Frederick says visitors are also welcomed to take photos of their sunflower fields. Many do, and interest is growing. “A couple of years ago, it started growing,” she stated. “Last year, we had over 2,000 people ride the wagon hayride, but we had over 3,000 people here.” The free event raised $3,500 last year, and Frederick’s goal this year was $4,000, although the numbers are not yet in. “I like giving back,” said Frederick when asked why she continues to be involved. “I enjoy giving, community service and volunteering.” Enjoy this article? KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep. CROSSWORD TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Confusion Over Women’s Heart Attack Symptoms ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about symptoms for women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chestclutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? -- J. ANSWER: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symptoms of angina before a heart attack can include all of those vague symptoms. The same is true of men as well, although it’s more likely for women than for men to have symptoms other than the classic left-sided chest discomfort (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. The second thing I would say is to take new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise -- even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs -- is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously, especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have diverticulosis. At one time I was told not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? -- E.M. ANSWER: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes sense not to do so. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Create barriers. Preventing accidental drowning means removing easy access to pools. Pools should be surrounded by secure fencing with an automatically latching gate. Fences should not be accessible by climbing. Extra precautions like installing a safety cover on inground pools and removing or securing ladders when the pool is not in use can help as well.

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Save Energy And Money (NAPS)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energyefficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580, based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally sound single- or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. Learn More For further facts and stats about saving money and energy, go to www.iwfa.com.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 27, 1967, Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles, is found dead of an accidental drug overdose in his Sussex, England, home. In 1962, Epstein was hired in a deal that gave him 25 percent of the band’s gross earnings for five years. On Aug. 28, 1917, 10 women suffragists are arrestedas they picket the White House to demand that President Woodrow Wilson support a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. After the jailed women went on a hunger strike and had to be force fed for months, Wilson finally agreed to a suffrage amendment. On Aug. 26, 1939, the first televised Major League baseball game is broadcast. Announcer Red Barber called the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in New York. The video coverage was somewhat crude. There were only two stationary camera angles.

To save money and energy, have window film installed instead of replacement windows. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

My mom walked away from where she was staying in the LeRoy area last Wednesday afternoon and was missing for about 1 hour. Some very kind and caring people came to our aid and spent their time and effort in helping us locate her. Thank you all so much for caring and making a difference in our lives. For those doubting the important role that slavery played in causing the Civil War, each Confederate state presented “Articles of Secession” when they left the US. These documents are easy to find online and they all list slavery, the economics of slavery, and the denial of the expansion of slavery into the western territories as primary reasons for leaving the Union.

To my understanding, parades are not sponsored by taxpayer money. They are supported individually and by organizations. I have to give a shout out and many thanks to Jackie Whiting and staff for an amazing summer recreation program! My children have participated in many of the programs offered this summer, as well as enjoying a family membership at the pool! Not only are the costs for each program affordable, but the staff is always so friendly and helpful during their camps! They are great role models for our kids as well! Very proud to live in such a great community that provides awesome activities for the kids in the summer with a very friendly and hands-on staff! Keep up the great work! See you next summer!

with our society, and we shouldn’t waste our time over something that brings the community together. Worst Fast Food Ever! I occasionally go to a fast food restaurant in [local town]. I always go through the drive thru. I would like to point out how consistent they are with their orders...consistently wrong. I have yet to receive a complete correct order. I ordered six items and paid for six items. There were exactly four. My boyfriend ordered a hamburger, and when he got it home it had no meat on it. My coffee was served cold. We’ve ordered and emphasized repeatedly, “no cheese,” only to have said item dripping in cheese. It is so hard to comprehend. Things never used to be this bad. [local county]. When you go into a place of business, you would think that you would be well taken care of. Not there! Three employees ignored my family as we stood there, waiting several minutes to be served. They were standing around off to the side of the cash register, not acknowledging our existence. Then, one employee looked right at us and turned back to the others without saying anything. That same employee had an extra large drink right in front of the register in full view of the customers. The worst part is this is the third time that we have had an awful experience at this place. It has the most unprofessional employees that I have seen in a long time.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. And rather than mailing contracts to prospective clients, email contracts that accept e-signatures, ultimately storing the contracts on your file server rather than in a dusty old filing cabinet.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be careful not to allow the backers of a new financial “deal” to pull the wool over the Lamb’s eyes. It could hold fewer plusses and more negatives than you were first led to believe. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good idea to finish all incomplete tasks so that you can devote your attention to next week’s projects. The weekend could hold surprises for romantic Fernandas and Ferdinands. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A workplace suggestion you made a while ago that you might have forgotten could come back with a request to turn it from idea to reality. Your social life picks up considerably this weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Someone from the past could return with an intriguing opportunity for a future project. Check into it, by all means. But don’t neglect your current responsibilities in the meantime. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keeping your claws sheathed and using good humor instead to counter someone who’s badmouthing the Big Cat isn’t easy. But it’s the best way to avoid more problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A workplace situation could improve if you’re less critical and more supportive of those who are, after all, trying to do their best. Let them know you’re there to help when necessary. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A new job offer might not carry all the benefits you’re seeking. Make sure you know what you’re entitled to, what is off the table and what is negotiable before you make a decision. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A social obligation you would rather get out of could hold some surprisingly positive aspects. Why not go and see for yourself? A family member makes a curious request. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Before tackling that new project awaiting you at home or on the job, take time out for some much-deserved pampering to help lift your spirits and restore your energy levels. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your social calendar begins to fill up more quickly than you expected. And that’s great. You deserve to enjoy some good fun after so much time spent on serious matters. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A domestic situation continues to improve, thanks to all the tender, loving concern you’ve shown. A colleague makes a questionable move that you might want to check out sooner rather than later. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden turn in a romantic relationship calls for both a rational and passionate response. Keep the love level high, but also find out why the problem arose in the first place. BORN THIS WEEK: You often set high standards for others. But to your credit, you set the same expectations for yourself.

TAKE A COURSE IN DORM SAFETY Travel in groups. When attending parties or other functions, always arrive and leave in a group. This offers extra protection, as assaults and other crimes are less likely to occur when criminals are outnumbered.

585-394-7260 RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.
