Be especially careful with power tools. Power tools can do a lot and they’re fun to use. But it’s important that DIYers do not let fun distract them from safety. The Power Tool Institute urges power tool users to wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. The PTI also advises users to make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and to inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. Much like it’s unsafe to overreach on a ladder, overreaching when using power tools increase the risk for mistakes, accidents and injuries.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT
Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal.
The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “When you’re good at something, you’ll tell everyone. When you’re great at something, they’ll tell you.” -- Walter Payton
Why are you supposed to take off the “suckers” on tomato plants if they still produce fruit? You do not need to take the suckers off but if you do not, you will end up with a lot of branches and probably a lot of small tomatoes if you are lucky.. The added branches will shade other parts of the plant and encourage mold and bacteria to grow since rainwater would not evaporate off the leaves as quickly compared to one that you prune. The extra branches also take up energy that could be used in producing larger fruit. So, depending on what you want from
your tomatoes, pruning off branches might be something you will want to do.
You could try an experiment in your garden to see for yourself what happens with and without pruning. Just a side, at the beginning, if you root some of the suckers, you could get a few more plants that will produce tomatoes for you before frost kills them.

Local 4-H Youth Experience Japanese Culture This Summer in International Exchange Program
BY SUZIE WELLS
In a heartwarming display of cultural exchange and international camaraderie, twenty-seven New York State families have generously opened their homes to young visitors from Japan, thanks to the 4-H Youth Development program. is initiative by theNewYorkState4-HO ceatCornellUniversity, incollaboration with County Cornell Cooperative Extension o ces throughout the state, fosters a deep appreciation for global connections and cultural diversity.
e program, known as the NYS 4-H Japanese Exchange, brought 25 Japanese youth, aged 13 to 17, and two adult chaperones at the end of July. ese enthusiastic participants were promptly welcomed into the embrace of host families across 22 New York State counties, from Western NY to the Hudson Valley. Several families across Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes hosted this summer. e experience has been a transformative journey for both the visiting delegates and their gracious host families.
Jessica Reid, a dedicated 4-H Educator and inbound assistant for the 4-H Exchange program, shares her profound insights into the signi cance of international exchange. Drawing from her own experiences living and teaching in Japan, she emphasizes the incredible bene ts gained from immersing oneself in a di erent
Amy Rimkus, Shunka’s host mother, relishes the chance to learn about Shunka’s Japanese culture and share their own, solidifying the program’s role as a pathway to new adventures and lifelong connections. Amy says, “It’s been a way to learn about her culture and way of life and share a little about ours. I would recommend this program to anyone who is open to a new adventure!”
is organization collaborates with 4-H programs across nearly 20 states, orchestrating inbound and outbound cultural exchanges from one to ten months between 4-H youth and youth from Japan, South Korea, Norway, Costa Rica, and many other countries. e thirty-day summer Japanese program allowed nearly 550 Japanese youth to experience life in the United States this summer.
e overarching goal of the 4-H International Exchange program is to foster a deep understanding and appreciation for cultural diversity and global connections among participating youth. It aims to create vibrant and resilient communities, driven by civic engagement and cross-cultural understanding.
e 4-H Youth Development program, a cornerstone of American youth education, reaches millions of young people across the United States, including rural, suburban, and urban areas, helping them evolve into responsible and compassionate members of society.
ForReid, theimpactofculturalexchangegoesbeyondindividual growth; it extends to entire families. Host families who may not have the opportunity to travel abroad are able to invite the world into their homes, o ering a life-changing experience for both the hostsandthevisitingdelegates. eexchangeprogrambreaksdown barriers and expands horizons, fostering a broader understanding of the world. Reid says, “You are never too old or too young to learn from someone whose experiences di er from your own!”
is sentiment is beautifully echoed by the Rimkus family in Monroe County, who hosted Japanese delegate Shunka Inagaki. Hannah Rimkus delightfully shared, “It’s so much fun to show [Shunka] around Rochester! From going to the beach to bike rides we have been having a great time! We are excited to take her to Seabreeze and on other day trips around the area.” is program created lasting memories and forged bonds that bridge continents.
Reid says “ e State’s 4-H program is a great opportunity for families to experience another culture while opening their homes to a youth from Japan. We are always looking for more host families for not only the summer program, but for our year-long program as well. Some families may be worried they may not be a suitable host or be able to provide a good experience for a Japanese delegate because both parents work full-time, host siblings go to summer camp, or the family doesn’t travel during the summer, etc., but that couldn’t be further from the truth! e Japanese delegates want to experience daily life, whatever that means for your family. I encourage anyone interested in learning more about a new culture to apply to host a student next year!”

Most Common Cause Behind Teary Eyes Are Dry Eyes
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 74-year-old woman who loves to read the newspaper every morning. I have a problem that’s not serious, just annoying. My eyes tear up frequently while I read, causing me to wipe them. After I’m done reading, the problem stops. I see my ophthalmologist every year and have my vision glasses updated as needed. I am not yet a candidate for cataract surgery. Could you enlighten me about a probable cause for this irritating problem? -- A.H.G.
ANSWER: By all means, ask your ophthalmologist at your next visit, but the most common cause I see for watery, tearing eyes are ... dry eyes! This apparent paradox is caused by the fact that your eyes have three different fluids.
One of them, called meibum, is a long-lasting, oily material secreted by the meibomian glands, found around the edges of the eyelids near the eyelashes. This covers the eye and prevents fluid from evaporating quickly. Without this fluid, the lacrimal gland (near the temple above each eye) then has to make a lot of its watery secretions, which cause symptoms of tearing. Most commonly, the meibomian glands get clogged up by secretions becoming dry. Gently cleansing the eyelash area with warm water and baby shampoo helps many people unclog these glands. Artificial tears lubricate the eye and will reduce the symptoms of watery eyes (and maybe some eye irritation, too, which you might not have mentioned). ***

DID YOU KNOW?
The World Health Organization notes that childhood obesity rates are on the rise across the globe, but things may be improving in the United States. According to the WHO, as of 2014, an estimated 41 million children under the age of five were overweight or obese. But while childhood obesity is on the rise in Asia and Africa, the U.S. has made strides in its efforts to curb childhood obesity.
In 2004, 13.9 percent of children in the United States qualified as obese. By 2012, the figure had dropped to 8.4 percent. That’s welcome news in the U.S., as the WHO notes that children who are obese are likely to remain obese as adults, increasing their risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and asthma. There also are economic incentives to reducing childhood obesity, as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation notes that the tab for America’s obesity epidemic is roughly $117 billion per year. Those costs include lost productivity at work and the medical expenses that can be directly linked to obesity.
WOMEN IN STEM
Despite the widely held notion that men exceed the number of women in Science, Technology, EngineeringandMathfields, data indicates that there isn’t actually much disparity among the sexes. According to the National Science Foundation, women equal men in terms of bachelor’s degrees awarded in most of the fields of STEM, including biosciences, social sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences. The only STEM fields in which men still outnumber women are computer science and engineering. Women are just as capable as men to meet the demands of STEM careers. Raw IQ tests from the British Psychological Society have indicated that women and men frequently score equally well, with some studies suggesting women have the edge. In terms of mathematics prowess, girls score a mere 3 percent lower than their male counterparts on themathportionoftheScholastic Aptitude Test, according to the College Board.

* David Babcock broke a Guinness World Record for his time in the Kansas City marathon, at 5 hours, 48 minutes and 27 seconds. But not for running -- he managed to complete the race while knitting a scarf that measured just over 12 feet long. As he said later, “Knitting the whole way really did help distract me from the hard parts of the marathon.”

R.L. in Utah writes: “Do onions make you cry? Tip: Cut o root rst. Cut o top second. Remove outer skin and discard the rst outer layer of the onion. Slice/ dice/rings. Works great.” How do you cut your onions, and what helps to keep your eyes from watering? Write to us with your onion tips!
* You may not think to do this o en, but you should: Clean your laptop! Not just the screen or keys, but the exterior as well. Get a micro ber cloth, spritz the cloth (never the machine itself) with a bit of isopropyl alcohol and rub away dirt and grime.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Scout local garage sales: Garage sales are one way to bargain hunt and benefit the environment at the same time. Who knows what treasures you may be able to find at nearby garage sales? When shopping, set a spending limit and look for certain items you need, such as a bicycle or furniture. You may be surprised to find a quality item that costs much less than a brand new store-bought product.

Great Job!
A big thanks to our the Village of Geneseo workers who pick up our lawn bags and tree branches so regularly. They are always neat and careful to get all of the trimmings that we leave by the curb. We appreciate your service.
Best Win Ever!
This past weekend I was at Batavia Downs Gaming, hoping to win some money, yet gained much more in the end! I absent mindedly set my wallet on the stool next to me and eventually Ieft the casino, only to realize I did not have my wallet. A HUGE SHOUT OUT to the great samaritan that turned my wallet in to lost and found, and to Batavia Downs staff, Mary, Maya, and Maggie! When I realized I left it, I called and left a message, Mary tried to call me back three times. When we finally connected, Mary and Maya kindly told me it was locked in the safe. The next morning I went to pick it up, and Mary directed me to Lost & Found where I met Maggie, who pleasantly helped me retrieve my wallet, with some great conversation too! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH, my mishap truly turned out to be a blessing in disguise & the best win ever -
Strolling Downtown
Due to COVID, restaurants understandably added outside sidewalk seating. Our village downtown restaurants have done so, and we have enjoyed their service. Unfortunately, some of the tables are too large and have seating that spills out almost to the curb. Pedestrians should not be forced to step down into the street and around parked cars to get past those seated at tables. This is especially difficult for parents pushing strollers, wheelchair users and senior citizens. Restaurant managers, please use smaller tables or push them up against the building, limiting the number of chairs at the tables. This would provide a wider path for pedestrian use.
Keep it in your car
People! Stop throwing trash out of your car! The amount of garbage in the roads, on the side of highways, and in the grass is pure disrespect and laziness. If you’re picking up fast food, the paper bag and your wrappers do not belong in the road. Your plastic cup that had your soda in it from the convenient store does not belong in the road. Have some respect for the environment. The animals do not deserve to have their habitats polluted because you don’t want the trash in your car. YOUR GARBAGE=YOUR PROBLEM. We should be able to drive around and see the beauty in Rochester, not all the garbage that needs to get picked up. Show some respect. It’s not other people’s job to clean up after your mess. Wait until you get home to throw it out properly. In YOUR own trash can.

DID YOU KNOW?
Various factors guide a person’s decision when buying a vehicle. What one person finds attractive may not appeal to another buyer. Onebuyingtrendthathasemerged among American car buyers is their preference for a certain body type. According to analysis of new vehicle retail registrations by IHS Automotive in 2014, SUVs and crossovers accounted for 36.5 percent of the new vehicle market, versus 35.4 percent for sedans. Consumersareincreasinglydrawn to attributes like higher ground clearance, more interior space, stronger towing capacity, and higher seat positions. Sedans still draw attention, but they’re losing groundtolargervehicles, resulting in a major shift in the automotive market. The study also found that pickup trucks and hatchbacks have lost more share in the past few years than any other vehicle categories.

HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS
Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement.
Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible.
Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.

PAW’S CORNER
Dog’s Food Guarding Aggression Is Getting Worse
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted an energetic, bouncy little Terrier mix a few months ago from a friend who had found him abandoned and wandering near his farm. Eddie is around 1 year old, and according to the vet he was likely abused or in a puppy mill situation. He’s now caught up on his shots, neutered, has put on weight and is pretty happy. However, he is an absolute terror if anyone, including me, approaches him while he’s eating. He snarls and snaps. And he’s gotten worse. He even nipped my hand once, and ran o in fear when I yelled. How can I stop this behavior? -- Jack H. in Newton, Massachusetts
DEAR JACK: Resource guarding is certainly an undesirable behavior, and it is sadly a common one in dogs coming from stressful, overpopulated or abusive situations. Because Eddie is really aggressive, even toward you, consider contacting a professional trainer and working with the vet to develop a long-term solution. Training along with a prescribed anti-anxiety medicine can work wonders, but it will take time.
In the short term, you’ll need to make sure Eddie won’t bite you or anyone else. Feed him in a location away from foot tra c and other pets. If you use a kennel cage, you can feed him in the cage. Feed him at consistent times each day. Don’t let anyone else attempt to feed him, even with treats.
e ASPCA has a helpful article with training exercises to start helping Eddie relax when you’re near him during feeding time. Find it here: www.aspca.org/ pet-care/dog-care/common-dog-behavior-issues/food-guarding
However, they also recommend working with a trainer. Resolving a resource guarding behavior can be tricky, but the long-term bene t is a happy, healthy companion.
