Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.

HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL

PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS

Not all bees build the wax or paper structures associated with traditional beehives. Those hives may not be readily visible even for bees that do build them. Wood-nesting bees can nest in twigs or dead trees. Bees may nest underground or use the burrows abandoned by small rodents. Before excavating or disturbing more remote areas of the yard, check to see if it is a habitat for bees. Leave some natural areas of the landscape untouched and do not remove twigs, mounds of dirt and native flowers to attract more bees.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way. 585-703-5194FulLy INsured Time for SumMer Cleanup? Poll Ends 08-30-22 Poll Results 08-23-22 Several scientists are now predicting a catastrophic flood is expected to strike California within the next four decades. The severity of the flood is expected to be beyond anything in living memory, potentially spanning the entirety of the state and turning lower regions into a “vast inland sea.” If you lived in California today, would you be inclined to move?

For decades, people young and old have flocked to movie theaters for the latest film releases, but times are changing. Movies are increasingly and quickly available through streaming services in the comfort of one’s own home. Combined with what some have described as a “block buster desert,” this has led many movie goers to become movie “stayers.” How will you watch the next film that catches your interest?

* Ferdinand Demara, aka “The Great Impostor,” posed as a surgeon aboard a Navy destroyer in the Korean War, where he was forced to operate on 16 people. He proceeded to speed-read a textbook on general surgery and was able to successfully perform all the operations without losing a single patient.

* Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick

By Sam Mazzotta How to Litter Train a New Kitten

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

The Bat &

DEAR PAW’S corner: I’m getting a new kitten from my neighbor. His name is Striper, and he’s 10 weeks old. But I’m worried that he won’t know how to use the litter box. Once he moves in, how can I train him to use the litter box?

* You can use plain white bread to get fingerprints and smudges off of wallpaper and semigloss painted walls. Just ball up the bread center (not the crust) and rub the smudge away.

-- Kaley in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Dear Kaley: Once kittens are able to move around and explore, their moms teach them right away where and how to go. is is a survival skill: Cats hide their waste so that it’s harder for predators to nd them and so their prey doesn’t know they’re around. However, you’ll need to make sure Striper knows where it’s appropriate for him to go. So, before he comes home with you, prepare for his arrival.

-- As soon as Striper arrives, bring him to the litter box rst before anything else. Let him sni around and get familiar with the Whatbox. if Striper doesn’t use the litter box? Here’s what to do:

-- Have the litter box ready to go, lled with litter, and a scoop and bag nearby.

-- If you catch him in the act, don’t scold him; pick him up and place him in the litter box. Let him sni around again and allow him to leave even if he doesn’t go

-- Give him lots of praise when he uses the box and a little treat when he’s done.

(c)com.2022

-- If Striper still won’t use the box, try shi ing it to a new location and show him where it is.

--again.Get to know his behaviors. Once you recognize Striper is about to go, you can pick him up and get him to the litter box.

It’s designed to break down grease, and I just dab it on, scrub a bit, then let it set for about a quarter hour. After that, I launder in hot water. It’s usually successful.” -- via email

DEAR DR. ROACH: As a 90-year-old man in mostly good health, I have been taking one Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) pill per day for several years now, preventatively for recurrent urinary tract infections. I am very pleased with this successful treatment. However, my urologist has mentioned that I might have to relinquish the Bactrim at some point without a full explanation of why. Is there any danger in the habitual use of Bactrim? -J.M. ANSWER: Both men and women who get recurrent urinary infections are sometimes treated with prophylactic antibiotics, such as the sulfa-based antibiotic you are taking. The main risk is not toxicity of the medicine, it is that you might acquire a bacterial strain that is resistant to the antibiotic treatment. You are fortunate that you have gone several years without this developing, and you may go many more successfully, but other people periodically need to change the antibiotic they are Prophylactictaking.

antibiotics are not the first-line treatment to prevent recurrent infection. Urologists, the specialists for the urinary tract, will evaluate the urinary system to try to identify a correctible condition. I trust your urologist has considered other options before prescribing your current treatment.

(NAPSI)—Organ transplants have been saving lives for many years. You may even know someone who has received a kidney or a heart transplant, and what a difference that gift of life has made. Another type of transplant has been changing lives in incredible new ways—the transplantation of hands and faces. More than 100 people worldwide have received these types of transplants: a veteran who lost his limbs in war, a woman whose face was devastated in an attack, a child

Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS is a boardcertified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS • Foot & Ankle Surgeon practicing in Denver, CO • Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (NAPSI)—One in five Americans suffers from bunions. A bunion, or hallux valgus, starts out as redness and a bump on the side of the foot near the big toe. Over time, bunions can cause chronic pain and restrict movement.

DO I NEED BUNION SURGERY?

Bunions are progressive and don’t go away on their own, so it’s important for people with bunions to see a foot and ankle surgeon who will evaluate the severity of the deformity and develop a treatment plan. Nonsurgical treatments may reduce the chance of damage to the joint and ease the pain of bunions. However, these treatments will not reverse the deformity itself. If the pain begins interfering with normal daily activities, surgical intervention will typically be the next step. Until recently, the procedure had been very painful and the recovery difficult. However, foot and ankle surgeons have made several advancements in surgical techniques and patients return to patientCollegeFootHealthFacts.org,andForrecoversupplements.andblocks,surgery,techniquesimplementFoottypicallynormalactivitiessooner.Recoverytakesfourtosixweeks.andanklesurgeonspainmanagementfollowingbunionincludingusingnervepostsurgicalpainpumps,vitaminCandcalciumTheseletpatientsfullywithminimalpain.moreinformationortofindafootanklesurgeonnearby,visitwww.theAmericanofFootandAnkleSurgeons’educationwebsite.

You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Heat and cold therapies can effectively combat symptoms associated with inflammation, but such treatments should always be discussed with a physician before being instituted.

I’m responding to the rant regarding the person troubled by a family posing their children for a photo in front of their farmland. “Personal boundaries” have become quite ridiculous in our country. Unless it’s a public park or state land, every piece of land is off limits and usually filled with those all-too-familiar posted signs. When my family traveled to Scotland a few years back, I quickly noticed the utter lack of those nasty posted signs. When I inquired with the host of the place we stayed at about the absence of Keep Out signs, we were told that there was a mutual respect of property there and that people were free to hike or roam on any piece of open land. I took her up on that and enjoyed that great freedom while feeling uneasy as it was so unusual to me. How nice it would be to have that same attitude here! I know there are those that abuse the privilege, but a true form of “common decency” allowing such a harmless act would remind us that America IS the land of the free.

Trash Thrown in Hayfield Today at 5:30 AM, I saw a vehicle stop so that the driver could toss a pile of filthy trash into our hayfield on (local road, local town), of mostly cigarette packs, many receipts identified with their debit card number, and a quantity of hard seltzer cans. I just picked it all up; metal fragments, in particular, can kill animals ingesting the baled hay. Be aware that your vehicle’s lights illuminated you! Fair warning: Next time, you will be reported to the sheriff’s office, because we become weary of picking up after pigs. The numerous convenience stores from which your garbage originated all have trash cans! Macedon, NY

Pet Peeves Store bought flowers now having color but no fragrance. I miss florists and markets selling fragrant flowers. - In a parking lot, my vehicle was hit by a driver pulling into the parking space in front of my car. Calling out to that driver, that person looked and simply responded, “Oh, it is just a little bit!” - Are we entering a new normal of really high heat and humidity summers? - It makes no sense that Medicare does not cover an emergency services home visit.

Riga Recreation's annual Summer Camp was a smashing success these past seven weeks! This summer experience for our youngsters could not have taken place if not for the following individuals/organizations: Camp Director Dave Childs, along with his counselor staff that included counselor Gladys, the Churchville Elementary School custodial staff, the CCCSD Continuing Ed. Dept., Bauer Karate, CCMS Gardening, Rose Garden Bowling, The Magic Guy, Air Affair Bounce House, Arlene's Air Brush Tattoos, and Pizza 151 for making this summer a special one! - David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you!

A huge thank you to Tom from the Rose Garden Bowl in Bergen for donating 20 used bowling pins for a NEW recreation program called FOWLING. This is a brand new game which combines "FO" (football) and "OWLING" (bowling). Without Tom's generous donation, we could not have made this possible! - David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga

COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE WHILE SOCIAL DISTANCING Host calls with family members and friends. The video telephone and chat service Zoom has helped millions of people stay connected with loved ones while social distancing. Schools and universities even employed the service when in-person classroom sessions were canceled to stop the spread of the virus. The CDC recommends grieving families employ such technology to connect with each other in the wake of a loved one’s death.

COUNTRY BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH 130 Hook Rd., Farmington 315-986-2293 Pumpkin Hook Fire Hall Ray Drake - Pastor 6:00pm 6:30pm JESUS have all been touched by the anguish and grief of those parents, grandparents, siblings, relatives, friends and others by the horrific acts in our present society that hurt and kill our children and others. Often because we have a hard time understanding the events around us, some walk away from their faith in Christ. Simon Peter asks the big question in John 6:68, “Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.” King David also said in Psalms 61:2, “when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock (Christ) that is higher than I.” Healing begins at the cross where Jesus suffered for us. Once we in repentance and faith turn to Him ALONE, He then becomes our hope and He understands when we and others do not. Jesus is the answer!

• Use reminders to stay on pace as you get ready. Try setting an hour, half hour, een-minute, ve-minute, and leave now reminder, if necessary.

• Buy the bulk of your child’s back-to-school clothes in October for the best deals.

• If possible, lay out all your and your child’s out ts for the week, not just the next day.

Set First Day Expectations:

• We love it: Create a “drop zone” for your child’s things right next to where they walk in the door. Don’t forget a tray or stand for forms, notes, and other papers! Love to write? You could earn CASH when you share your original story, personal experience, community happening or school event with us! It may be featured on our popular website for all to see and even selected for print! Go to My Hometown at www.gvpennysaver.com or email our Hometown Editor Amanda Dudek at AmandaDudek@gvpennysaver.com!

• Make the half hour before lights out reading time. Reading before bed has been found to improve sleep while reducing anxiety and stress. Join in, too!

• We love it: Create a summer memories journal or scrapbook with your child. Add notes, photos, drawn or colored pictures, and more! Ready Backpacks & Paperwork:

• We love it: Make the rst day fun! Set the tone by decorating your child’s door with streamers and balloons!

Prep like a Pro:

celebrate—and hopefully stay healthy—all year long!

• Pack extra out ts in gallon-size freezer bags.

• Don’t forget your First Day of School photo & have fun!

• Keep a planner with a separate folder for each child’s paperwork.

• Children are o en aware of—and worried about—more than we think. Ask your child about any questions or concerns they have about back-to-school. Let them know what plans are in place in case any situations arise. Knowing what to expect should decrease any anxiety they may feel.

• We love it: Have your child leave his or her backpack out the night before the rst day of school so the “backpack fairy” can leave a fun surprise (like a cool new backpack decoration) by morning!

• Unsurprisingly, frequent hand washing continues to greatly reduce the risk of many communicable illnesses. Pocket-sized, great smelling hand soaps might encourage your child to scrub, scrub, scrub!

• Fill out all forms, i.e., immunization forms, permission slips by the week preceding the start of school. Find out what your school’s most updated policies are regarding vaccinations, masks, distancing, Covid testing, etc.

• Prep grabbable, lunch-size portions of fruits and other healthy lunch “building blocks” to get kids involved in choosing their lunches.

• We love it: Write cheerful messages on the sidewalk for your child to read along the way! No sidewalk? No problem! Display a banner or streamers from your porch or a tree instead!

• Before you wake your child, get yourself ready.

G

Set Sunday Evening Aside:

• Sanitizing is still important, so make sure your child has access to hand sanitizer, perhaps in mini bottles.

Back-to-School

• We love it: row a bu et dinner with your child’s favorite foods to celebrate the rst day of school.

• Avoid the sudden jolt of a much earlier wake up. Set earlier times incrementally leading up to the rst day of school, dialing back both the bedtime and the wake-up time 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or even an hour earlier every 5-7 days, as necessary until you reach your desired school schedule bedtime and wake up time. A full 8+ hours of sleep improves health and focus.

etting your child ready for the rst day of school hasn’t felt quite the same since the pandemic, but for the rst time in nearly three years, children are returning to the classroom with some semblance of what could be considered pre-pandemic normalcy. Need a little help getting back into the swing of things? Try our refreshed and updated tips for rst day success to help you

It’s Right Around the Corner! Get ready with these 5 Simple Strategies!

Shi your Schedule the Week Before:

• First days are hard for everyone. Plan a fun way for your child to decompress and share about their day the rst evening a er school.

• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

e senior center commandeered a large space at the rec center to use in an experiment. eir goal: to determine if we actually meant what we said about not coming in for exercise classes in a cramped senior center space where we’re all breathing on one another. Find more room, we’d said, room to spread out. Hence, the borrowed space at the rec center (which had to cancel the Tots and Mommy Workout Hour ... something about a stay-at-home father objecting to the name of the class).

e rec center space was nicely decorated with blue painter’s tape X spots across the oor, 10 feet apart. en before we started, we got a little talk. “How many of you haven’t taken an exercise class in two years?” asked the too-young male exercise coach we’d never met before.

Purslaneinmyvegetablegarden?

Purslane is a vigorous weed that can be difficult to kill. Since it is close to your vegetables, you could carefully apply a weed killing product using a paint brush. Read the product label to make sure it is effective with this plant and follow all label instructions for your personal safety. A product that contains glyphosate will be absorbed into the roots and probably most effective, though repeated applications may be needed. If this weed is still growing after you have harvested your vegetables, you could use a tarp to cover the area and smother them where they are growing over the winter. - Julie Brocklehurst-Woods, Master GardenerVolunteer Should I prune my sour cherry tree in the spring orinthefall?

The short answer is prune your sour cherry in the spring. For most fruit trees, spring (before the buds open into flowers and leaves) is the best time to prune unwanted limbs and branches.Growth and healing of live wood cuts begin right away and limit exposure of open wounds to insects and disease. One exception to that rule is sweet cherries. Since they are more susceptible to fungal and bacterial diseases, they should be pruned in late summer to minimize exposure.

While these devices may theoretically allow workers to become more productive, research suggests otherwise.
