Penny Saver PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Loud, Stinky Dog Not What He Ordered My name is Theo. I am an about 13 years young orange tabby and have lived with my mom and dad since 2010. I am quite a conversationalist and love being with people, especially curled up on their laps. I am a good traveler, going with my snowbird parents south every winter. I sleep all day in my cat carrier and explore the hotel room all night. Then, I sleep again the next day until we arrive at our winter home. My favorite ritual, no matter where I am, is being brushed. Then you can hear me purr in the next county.

Encourage activism. Outdoors enthusiasts who want to protect their beloved parks can encourage activism in their communities. Work with park officials to organize trash pickup days at the park or organize activities for school-aged youngsters that teach them the importance of conservation and respecting the environment.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! I’m in over my head. I wanted a dog just like a cute, white, fluffy one that I saw on YouTube, so I bought one online called a “Samoyed” and picked it up at the airport. “Mikey” is cute, white and fluffy, but he’s also hyperactive and loud! He barks all the time. He wants to run outside my apartment. He won’t hold still for pictures. He chews everything, he smells terrible and he poops everywhere. I did not pay for this! How can I get my money back? -- Bilked in Buffal DEAR BILKED: You didn’t get cheated; you got a dog. That’s exactly how dogs behave! They are energetic, communicative, living beings. They love to chew things. Their breath smells kind of funny, and their fur can smell funky after a run outside. They need exercise, training, food and love. Samoyeds like Mikey are especially energetic, because they were originally bred for hunting and as guard dogs. You’ll need to keep him on a leash outside, because he will chase smaller mammals, especially cats and rabbits. He’ll get bigger, too; Samoyeds are medium-large to large dogs. Don’t try to return Mikey or get your money back (if that’s even possible since you bought him online). The trauma you’ll cause him may be unrecoverable. Instead, if you have friends with well-behaved dogs, talk to them and get advice. Pick up a book on caring for Samoyeds. And schedule some sessions with a dog trainer. You chose Mikey to be your family member. He depends on you. He’ll do his best to make you happy, but you need to care for him and show him how to be a good dog. Send your comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

Our magnolia tree is dropping some kind of black residue on the ground. Wondering if it has a fungus problem? What should be done to eliminate it? - Pam M. Yes, your Magnolia tree does have a problem but it is not a fungus. Rather, the problem is an insect called “Magnolia Scale.” This is an insect that starts out as a small, six-legged crawler in early spring which finds a tender spot on a branch, attaches itself and begins feeding on the sweet sap of the Magnolia tree. As it feeds, it grows a protective shell or covering which looks like a scale and turns whitish. The scale insects
excrete excess sap called “Honey Dew” which drops down on lower leaves and on anything below the tree. A fungus called “Sooty Mold” grows on the coating of honey dew and turns black. While the black residue is sticky and unsightly, it is usually not harmful. The scale infestation, however, can weaken the tree and cause limbs to die back.

Embrace strategic landscaping. The landscaping outside of a home can contribute to cooler climates inside the home. Deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, and when planted on the western and southern sides of a home, these trees can block the sun from entering the home during the hottest times of day, reducing the need to lower the thermostat on air conditioners. Of course, when these trees shed their leaves in late fall, sunlight can then make its way into the home, potentially reducing heating costs.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you.

Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is vital. Page 5

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There is symbolism in Disney’s Cinderella mosaic. The company says that “guests can see that each of Cinderella’s stepsisters appears with her own special facial tint. One sister displays a red tint to show that she is ‘red with rage,’ while the other sister displays a green tint to show that she is ‘green with envy,’ as they watch Cinderella try on the glass slipper to reveal a perfect fit.” * Sorry, but that cream filling in Twinkies isn’t cream at all -- it’s vegetable shortening.

Recognize that not all plants are the same. How much water a plant needs and how frequently it needs to be watered largely depends on how deep its roots are. A plant with shallow roots won’t need to be watered for long periods of time, but it will need to be watered frequently, whereas a deeprooted plant like a tree or a shrub will need to be watered for long periods of time but not as frequently. Research the plants around your property to determine the depths of their root systems and water accordingly.

Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Use a travel agent. Using a travel agent to plan your vacation can remove any stress and anxiety you may feel when planning a trip and juggling the responsibilities of everyday life. Many people choose to book their own trips as a cost-cutting measure. What they don’t realize is that travel agents may be privy to special deals and perks they can pass on to customers. These agents also know the ins and outs of certain resorts and locales. Leaving the legwork in their accomplished hands means all you have to do is show up with your reservations instead of pouring over the minutiae of planning.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Getting Up Off the Floor With aging, we lose muscle. With all the staying home we're doing now, we're losing more muscle. We have to fight against that. One serious result of losing muscle at our age is the simple task of getting up off the floor. It can happen to anybody our age: You look for something at the back of the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, and suddenly there you are, sitting on the kitchen floor, unable to get up. Even if you can reach the phone to call for help, think about what happens next. The EMT crew will show up, but they won't come rushing in. Not nowadays. Now they want to determine whether or not you're likely to have the COVID virus. If there's any risk at all, they're likely to suit up with all their biohazard gear before they even come in the house. The best way to avoid all that drama is to not lose those muscles and to know a few techniques for getting up again. Put these search words into YouTube or even your browser: "seniors get off floor muscles." Some specific YouTube channels you can search through for helpful exercises and techniques are "Eldergym Fitness for Seniors," "Ernie Schramayr" and "Bob & Brad." (These last two guys are physical therapists with a great sense of humor. In fact, click Videos and look through all their offerings.) When you find something you like, bookmark it. Then, when you have the muscles and the technique, test it once a week. Get down on the floor, get up. Even if you're certain you'd have no problems, test it anyway. With aging you never know.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

“Happy Birthday, Charlie!” Car Parade to Celebrate Webster Veteran’s 90th Birthday BY AMANDA DUDEK
O
n Wednesday, July 29th, Veteran, mason and long-time Webster resident, Charlie Bills turned 90 years-old. A truly landmark birthday for such a man should be celebrated; however, COVID-19 restrictions permit no large gatherings, especially for those who are elderly. Nevertheless, Molly Copeland, among others, wanted to make sure Charlie’s birthday was still celebrated and that Charlie knew how much he means to so many. Molly Copeland spread the news of Charlie Bill’s upcoming birthday parade through social media. She encouraged everyone available to participate in this “act of kindness – to feel like [they] are a part of something big, and kind, bringing a sense of unity as a community.” Many people responded to her message.
Police officers join the parade celebrating Charlie’s 90th birthday!
Cars turned up in droves, gathering on the corner of Holt Road and Lake Road approaching noon on the morning of his parade. Attendees were given American flags to display or wave. Even the rain couldn’t stop friends, family and even strangers from driving by, beeping, cheering, well-wishing and even police cars with their lights flashing all to wish Charlie a happy birthday. Charlie Bills, accompanied by his wife, Barbara, who also organized his birthday event, sat under an open tent on their front lawn, surrounded by festive decorations as well as a few family and friends. Charlie, a U. S. Navy Veteran, was a mason for many years. He worked both for his own company for 40 years, as well as for other area companies. He primarily laid block. “We have been married for 67 years,” added Barbara, fondly, noting that Charlie’s secret to long life was hard work. It is easy to believe as

one of his friends stopped by and declared that Charlie was one of the best contractors he had ever worked with. Charlie truly seemed speechless when asked about his birthday surprise which included a barbershop quartet and “Happy Birthday” sung by Charlie and Barbara Bills Mr. Warfield. He called the event, “amazing.” Bills said, “I would like to thank everyone for taking the time” to drive out for his birthday. His evening plans, he added, involved enjoying his birthday cake. Charlie Bills received a birthday celebration after all. Everyone should feel special on their birthday, perhaps especially during difficult times such as these. On behalf of a fellow participant, thank you to all those who gave Charlie a wonderful birthday he will surely never forget!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
l u f i t u a e Bright, B Smiles!
Removing Gallbladder Didn’t End Gallstones --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband had his gallbladder removed many years ago. In the past few years, he has had six ERCPs to remove gallstones from his bile duct, as he is still making them. He has been told to drink lots of water but that there is no preventive remedy. Do you have any suggestions for how to prevent these gallstones from forming? -- B.A.P. ANSWER: Ordinarily, removing the gallbladder stops new gallstones from forming. Having a gallstone left after surgery is not uncommon, but it is very uncommon for people to make multiple new stones years after surgery. One possibility is a diverticulum of the common bile duct. The common bile duct drains bile from the liver and gallbladder into the small intestine; it drains pancreatic fluid, too. A diverticulum is a blind pouch. It’s possible for a stone to form there, so you should find out if he has one. They should have seen it on one of the ERCPs (a special endoscopy that looks at the bile and pancreatic ducts). If present, a diverticulum can be removed surgically. I asked my colleague at Weill Cornell, Dr. Arun Jesudian, for his expertise, and he said he has seen multiple stones in the liver due to parasitic infections, often in Asian patients. That may require surgical treatment. He also discussed doing a sphincterotomy, which is a procedure to open the end of the common bile duct, to let stones pass through easily. Your husband may benefit from expanding it. Finally, there is a medication to reduce gallstones, ursodiol (Actigall), which Dr. Jesudian feels had no real downsides and might well help. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a female, 53, who suffers from and is being treated for IBS. I have a history of colon cancer in my family. My family members and I go through regular screenings and so far, we’ve been clean. Once in a while, I wake up feeling a sharp, stabbing pain in my rectal area that lasts no more than 20-30 minutes before going away. These pains occur no more than once a month, sometimes every few months, but the pain often happens while I’m asleep and wakes me up. Luckily, there have been no bloody or black stools or urine following this, much to my relief. I’ve talked to my gastroenterologist about it, and he’s as clueless as I am. I do exercise and watch what I eat. Could it be gas? At least the pain is short-lived, so it doesn’t interfere with my daily activities or routine. -- A. ANSWER: Irritable bowel syndrome is a common problem, found more frequently in women, that ranges from annoying to lifechanging. Although it does not predispose to cancer or reduce life expectancy, IBS can have dramatic effects on a person’s social and work lives. The hallmarks of IBS are bowel changes (diarrhea, constipation or sometimes both, alternating) and abdominal discomfort. The discomfort is usually described as cramping, but it is not unheard of to be described as sharp or stabbing. I believe a colonoscopy is appropriate to be sure IBS is not actually a different problem, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Black or bloody stools would be concerning for IBD not IBS. Your symptoms are not typical for colon cancer, which often has no symptoms until it is quite advanced, making regular screening so important. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Leave the car at home. Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

De-personalize the home. Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items. Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary. Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on. Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms. Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones. Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean. Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

THANK YOU, WALGREENS CASHIER! Went to Walgreens on Tuesday, July 28th, and Alex, the cashier was not only efficient, but kind, considerate, and patient with me. I had multiple orders, so I went to the check out three separate times. Each and every time, he did not rush me through my orders but was very helpful. As a customer, I really appreciate when a cashier is kind and considerate. Alex was accommodating to my needs, and he did so in a friendly manner. That means a lot to the customers.
SPYING In response to the person who complained about 11 cars parked in their neighbor’s driveway, I’d like to emphasize a few words you used in your rant. You said cars were parked in “his” driveway. Unmasked people were walking into “his” home. Your neighbor makes the rules on his property and in his home. Why are you spying on your neighbor anyway? Ever go to a store that you like to shop at, only to have a slow and unfriendly cashier have to check you out? I have, and it leaves an unpleasant experience in your mind. At Walgreens, in Brockport, I have never had that negative experience. So, Alex, thank you for being so attentive to the needs of your customers. THE PITTSFORD DAIRY What a fun, welcoming atmosphere to help cool down these hot days. Happy, helpful employees and they know how to make a shake! along the shoulder of the road. She was blowing all the grass and debris into the road on both sides. As I went by, I was peppered by grass and small stones. I looked to see if my car was scratched. Luckily, it wasn’t. I know it wasn’t intentional, but if my car had been scratched or dented, I would’ve gotten a police report and have had you pay to fix any my car. If you insist on blowing the grass into the road, at least stop as cars go by.
FOREVER GRATEFUL! On Friday, July 24th I took a hard fall in front of Aldi’s in Batavia. I just want to thank so many people who came to my aid that day. May God’s blessings fall on all of you for all you did on my behalf. I am forever grateful. Thank you; thank you! LIFESPAN’S LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM Lifespan’s Long-term Care Ombudsman program extends a heartfelt “thank you” to the 50+ volunteers who are trained to take pictures of children in a public place.
TOXIC NEIGHBORHOODS I am dismayed by all the pesticidetreated lawns. Grass lawns are the biggest mono crop in the US, covering more surface area, 40 million acres, than wheat and corn, and we douse it with pesticides year-round. Pesticides don’t magically become safe after application. Pesticide residues remain on the grass even if it’s dry. BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

Determine how much space you truly need. Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.
