TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Surgery Is Valid Option for Severe Sleep Apnea

$129 NEW PATIENT SPECIAL • Free comprehensive exam • Free diagnostic set of x-rays with every new patient. • Teeth cleaning

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, who is 30 years old, was recently diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and currently uses a CPAP machine. He says does not want to use this for the rest of his life, therefore, he has researched surgery to correct his OSA. Recently he consulted with a sleep expert, and now has surgery scheduled with that doctor. My son will have a septoplasty and a palate expansion before a more radical surgery in a year called MMA. My son feels that these surgeries will give him the longest lasting cure for his OSA. I am very concerned about all of these surgeries. I value your objective opinion and hope you can give me some reassurance that these surgeries are worth the pain. -- G.M. ANSWER: Although CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure, which works by using air to keep the airway open) is the usual treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, surgery is another effective way to treat OSA. Surgery is most appropriate for those who wish a surgical solution (some people can’t stand the CPAP machine), those who have a surgically correctable problem (see below), and those who are good candidates for surgery; younger age makes surgery seem more reasonable to me. The specific surgery chosen depends on an individual’s unique anatomy. Surgery on the uvula (yes, the dangling thing at the back of the throat), soft palate and pharynx is the most common surgery, but maxillomandibular advancement surgery (MMA) has been shown to be successful in several well-known medical centers in the U.S., such as Mayo Clinic and Stanford. Success rates are high, and some studies have shown surgical cure of obstructive sleep apnea in over half of those who undergo the procedure. Not knowing your son and not being a surgeon, I can’t give an objective opinion for him in particular, but I can say that in appropriate patients, surgical treatment of OSA is reasonable. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others.

Honeoye Falls: Michael Joseph Barnhoorn, age 60 of Honeoye Falls, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2021, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Loved ones that will miss Mike until they meet again include his daughter, US Army Staff Sgt. Suzanne W. (Patrick) Beardslee; one grandson, Flynn E. Beardslee; four siblings, twin brother, Daniel J. (Andrea) Barnhoorn of Scottsville, Stephen A. Barnhoorn of Honeoye, Bart J. Barnhoorn of Honeoye Falls, and Toni ( James) Sloan of Avon; two nieces, Nickki L. Barnhoorn (Russell Johnson) and Lydia A. (Christopher) Wright; two nephews, Elliott J. Guthrie and US Army 2nd Lt. Christopher W. Barnhoorn; great-niece and great-nephews; and many cousins in the Netherlands and Texas. Mike’s life story began on August 2, 1961, as the oldest twin son born to the late Bart J. and Rebecca Y.M. (Wilcox) Barnhoorn at Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. The childhood years for Mike were spent growing up with his siblings on Honeoye Lake and at the family home on White Road in the Town of Richmond. On June 22, 1979, Mike and his twin brother Dan graduated from Honeoye Central School. During his school years, Mike was a member of Boy Scout Troop 10 in Honeoye, Rocket Club, and the Wrestling team. Following graduation from high school, Mike was the Store Manager at the former Treble’s Red and White, Honeoye. In addition, Mike also worked part-time as a bartender at the Briarcliff Room restaurant. In 1987, Mike moved on to another job as a Punch Press Operator at Stever-Locke Industries in Honeoye Falls. At the time of his passing, Mike was a 25-year employee at Star Headlight & Lantern Company in Avon as head of the Metal Fabrication Department. Throughout his career, Mike was highly regarded and valued for his strong work ethic.

Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater.

Over the years, Mike resided in West Bloomfield, Canadice, Scottsville and Honeoye Falls. An avid gardener like his late father, Mike was known for his green thumb. He also enjoyed ice fishing, hiking, hunting, collecting antiques, watching football games on Sunday afternoons, and most importantly, spending quality time with family. On the lighter side, Mike had a colorful, robust sense of humor, enjoyed pulling pranks, and making people laugh.

Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, September 7th at St. Mary’s Church in Honeoye, Rev. William F. Laird, officiating. Stephen Barnhoorn delivered the eulogy. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Honeoye. Arrangements were entrusted to Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc. Memories of Mike will be cherished by his family, friends and co-workers forever. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions be made in memory of Michael J. Barnhoorn to the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, PO Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING A will is an important component of estate planning. Without clearly and legally spelling out your wishes, there is no guarantee that those wishes will be honored. It will be up to a state or province to make potentially lifealtering decisions that can impact your surviving family members, and the only way to ensure your wishes will be carried out is to put them into a will. Although men and women can write their own wills, many people prefer to seek the assistance of an attorney, who can make sure all necessary details are included in the will. S E V RA Our Deepest Gratitude On behalf of the team of people who put on the second annual chicken BBQ for the Trevor Irby Memorial Scholarship, we would like to thank you for your support. The amount of love and generosity from everyone surrounding the fundraiser filled our hearts during such a challenging time. Thanks to the success of the BBQ and all the giving donations, we were able to make a generous contribution towards the Trevor Irby Memorial scholarship. This is a cause that is very near to our hearts. During such trying times in our personal lives and in current events, it is difficult to remember that there is still so much love and compassion in the world. Thank you for helping to make this day so positive, for all the generosity towards the scholarship, and for showing such compassion and grace. You are appreciated. A special thank you to the Stewart family, a constant support and pioneer of this fundraiser. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Aguirre, Faith Gates, and Paul Teed for making all this possible. - The Warner Family Kindness to a stranger On August 27th from 10:30PM to 3:30AM, I was waiting to be taken care of at UMMC Emergency Room for injuries sustained due to a fall. A young mom with a sick two-year-old boy was also waiting to see a doctor. Having left my home in a hurry, I didn’t have any cash with me, and they didn’t allow my wife to wait with me. Using hand signals, I asked the woman to please get me a bottle of pop, and she got me a root beer. In the excitement, I neglected to make arrangements to pay her back. I would like to pay her back and let her know how much I appreciated her kindness in helping a thirsty 88-year-old man caught without any cash.

Another natural area lost Construction has started on a new low-price store in Hemlock even though there are 2 other stores of the same name within 6 miles. At the site, there was a field full of flowers that attracted many butterflies and bees and a nice little pond alive with turtles, frogs and dragonflies. Then one day, the bulldozers cleared the field, ripped down trees and filled the pond, snuffing out all life. What an absolute shame! When are we going to stop destroying our natural areas for the sake of convenience, cheap goods, profit, and a few low-paying jobs? Demand Social Security changes Those who work and have Social Security deducted should be outraged that the government uses our money for their “slush funds.” It’s our money to be used when we are retired, disabled or for family hardships. Why aren’t taxpayers demanding our Representatives manage S.S. money as it was intended? Don’t forget, they work for us, and if they aren’t representing us, they should be voted out. This abuse has been going on for many years, but still they “pickpocket” our money without taxpayer permission. Everybody should be contacting their representatives from the bottom to the top. With computers, it is easy to contact our representatives. No more rocks Why are we painting trite messages on rocks (“be kind”) and then leaving them around on the ground outside? I don’t like it. Leave the rocks alone.

Get to Know Terri Bennett, Director of Webster Public Library BY DP DUNN

T

erri, tell us about your professional background, and involvement with the Webster Public Library (WPL).

I have been a professional librarian for 42 years (this month!) I’ve been blessed to have had an eclectic career working with various age levels, behind the scenes in administration and automation, and I was the Director of the Greece Public Library prior to coming to Webster. I’ve been the Director here in Webster for the past 16 years. The WPL is a tremendous resource for Webster. How do you view WPL’s role in the community? I like to say that we are the community’s living room – a place neighbors can gather, attend programs, pick out materials to read, view or listen to. We provide resources to help you find employment, switch careers or research your family tree. We work hard to ensure our building is a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy. Tell us about your staff - they are always smiling, friendly and professional. You must be very proud of them. Indeed! They continue to be a source of inspiration with their positive attitudes and creativity. We support each other personally, and I think that translates into great customer service. We love our community and our role in making Webster a place “where life is worth living.” During the pandemic, all member libraries of the Monroe County Library System were closed, including WPL. It was a tremendous loss, albeit temporary, to the community. What lessons did you and your staff learn from that experience? We learned how valuable we are to this community - and loved! We were shocked but gratified at the outpouring of emotion when we re-opened. One service we had started prior to the pandemic was curbside pickup, which we continue even now. The community really appreciates the ability to stay in their car whether due to the pandemic or inclement weather. For a lot of our community, we are part of their daily routine. New events are always happening at the Webster branch. Tell us some upcoming events? This is the fun part of the job – looking for creative ways to engage with our community. We have hosted events like a Harry Potter night. Currently, we have a life-size Candy Land game in the story room, and we’ve done scavenger hunts in our local parks. We have just instituted “Binge Bags” which are a series of 4 DVDs with a theme and a bag of popcorn – perfect for a long weekend! The Friends of WPL do some wonderful things; please tell us about the Friends and their work? A more dedicated group of volunteers you will not find – these hard-working people devote time and energy to making our library the best it can be. Pre-pandemic, they raised close to $50,000 annually for us mainly through the book sales and lobby book sale in the library proper. These funds support projects and materials not covered by the library’s budget. All our programs are paid for by the Friends group: children’s and teen programs, and most notably our Zoom programs for adults. Additionally, they have paid for the cloth book bags, an automated wheelchair, and our one-of-a-kind seed library among other valuable assets. Tell us about your favorite interactions with patrons. Our most favorite interactions are with children – they love coming here, not only for story times but also for the vast collections that are available to them. What do you wish more people knew about the libraries, librarians, and the Webster branch specifically?

collections, a seed library, experience kits, mood enhancing lights, portable CD players, comic books, magazines, etc., etc. The Webster Library Foundation has an endowment fund that we try to grow each year through our fundraising campaign. The Foundation allows staff to propose interesting, creative projects that we could not ordinarily fund through our operating budget. I wish people knew about all the valuable resources we have available to them: Consumer Terri Bennett, Reports online, video games Webster Public Library Director to borrow, books on CD, Ancestry.com, yearbooks from the Webster schools back to the beginning, Kindles with the latest bestsellers, Empire passes which provide free entry into State parks, CD players, WiFi hotspot units, etc., etc. Libraries and librarians are here to help – we may not know all the answers but can certainly get you started. Never hesitate to ask!

I wish people knew about all the valuable resources we have available to them!

What changes, projects, plans and improvements do you foresee in the Webster Public Library in the next 1824 months? The biggest change will be the change in leadership – I’m retiring in the next few months. The Board of Trustees is tasked with finding my replacement and has begun that process. This is an exciting time for my successor as the staff and Board continue working on its longrange plan. The lease on the current building is up in 12 years so a decision will need to be made on our future in the coming years.

Penny Saver Does My Cat Need Himalayan Salt? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m thoroughly confused by all the “health advice” for pets that I read online. One site tells me my cats should eat only organic meats and chicken (and nothing else!), while a Facebook page tells me that my pets will do fine on a vegan diet. My granddaughter’s Instagram feed says that cats need a slew of supplements to be healthy, including pink Himalayan salt, which is all the rage. How can I figure out what’s really best for my cats? — Jim H., Manchester, New Hampshire DEAR JIM: I feel your pain. The internet has given us access to all the information we’re looking for — and all the information we weren’t. Companies have sprung up left and right, peddling the latest supplement or dietary recommendation to keep our pets totally healthy, guaranteed. Fad diets can sometimes do harm to pets because key nutrients may be left out. Feeding dogs and cats only meat, and nothing else, can be as bad as feeding them no meat. And while most supplements are safe, you have to read up on what they actually do and know what a safe dose is. Your first and best resource is your pet’s veterinarian, who has years of advanced education in animal care and stays abreast of the latest developments in pet health and wellness. He or she can tell you the best diet or supplements to give your cats, and which info on the internet to pay attention to and which to disregard.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A tarantula discovered in 2015 near Folsom Prison, California, was given the scientific name “Aphonopelma johnnycashi” after Johnny Cash, in honor of his song “Folsom Prison Blues.” * For that matter, “The Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin had a snail named after him, the “Crikey steveirwini,” a rare species of tree snail with a khaki-colored shell discovered in 2009.

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * For a little extra visibility in the basement, try applying glow-inthe-dark or reflective tape on the edges of the stairs. * This tip will change your life when peeling eggs: After you have hard-boiled your eggs, drain and submerge in ice water. Put them back in the pot, put the lid on and shake. Shake in all directions for up to a minute. The eggs practically slip right out of their shells. Just rinse and prep. -- JoAnn

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Help! My Cats Have Started Fighting DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My two cats, Mitsy and Bitsy, got along well for nearly five years. Bitsy is 11 years old, about six years older than Mitsy. In the past couple of months, they squall and squabble with each other every time they’re in the same room. What is going on, and how do I stop it? -- Cara C., Albuquerque, New Mexico DEAR CARA: Take both of your cats to the veterinarian as soon as an appointment is available. Because the behavior just recently started after years of tranquility, a health issue could be at the root of their fighting. Senior cats are especially likely to develop conditions that cause them to be cranky or more territorial than usual. Pain from arthritis or other conditions can be a big factor in making Bitsy irritable, tired and just not in the mood to hang out with Mitsy. Likewise, Mitsy could be developing a medical condition; it’s best to rule out physical problems in both cats. Once their health has been assessed and treatment, if necessary, started, then the hard work of reconciling the two can begin. Keep the cats separated at first -- on opposite sides of the house, if possible, in closed rooms. Each day, reintroduce them by placing a small plate of food in front of each door and letting them out. If they calmly eat, then the next day, move both plates closer. Observe the cats as they eat; if they begin to growl or tense up, put both back into their rooms before they escalate -- fighting is very traumatic for them. Shift the bowls back a bit and try again.

* “To distinguish your keys, especially house keys that have similar stamps, simply paint the key head with different colors of nail polish. You could even add a very subtle dot of the matching polish on the key lock. Reapply as needed.” -- S.L. in Oregon

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Emphasize time management. Today’s high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping.

* If you keep birds, here’s a reminder: Never preheat pans on high heat -- especially nonstick pans. They can let off a chemical that you or I cannot detect but can be a health hazard if your bird friend is in the kitchen area. Don’t keep birds in the kitchen when cooking. * “To mark the end on a roll of tape, save your bread tabs. Stick one on the tape end and it will be ready and easy to start the next time. If it’s a thick tape, you can use two clips -- one at either side of the tape. This way, it won’t split on you.” -- M.E. in Maryland

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Listen Up: Engage Your Brain With Podcasts Have you ever listened to a podcast? A podcast is a digital audio or video file that you can access from the internet. They’re often in a series that you can tune into one at a time, almost like radio on demand. They’re usually associated with a website where you can find out what’s available and a schedule for new ones. You can listen or watch on your computer, phone or tablet, but you’ll need an app (application) if you want to download and take it with you, unless your phone has one pre-installed. One way to find entertaining podcasts is to plug one of your areas of interest into a web browser and add “podcast” to see what comes up. Or as a place to start, look at AARP’s website (www.aarp.org/ podcasts) and see what it offers. Right now, there are podcasts about various scams, protecting your finances and high prescription-drug prices, all worth a listen. Scroll to the bottom of the page for instructions. If you search the internet for podcasts, you’ll find vintage radio programs, celebrities, financial information, stories from history, news, brain stretchers, sports themes, stress reduction and so much more. There must be hundreds of thousands of podcasts out there to choose from. Try a search for “podcasts for seniors” to see what surprises pop up. Another way to keep your brain stretched is with online classes, called MOOCs, which stands for massive open online courses. There are thousands you can audit for free, attending remotely without ever leaving home. You don’t receive credit for audited classes. Coursera (www.coursera.org) is your go-to source for online learning. (At this writing, it lists 1,782 free courses from 200 universities.) Or see Edx (www.edx.org), co-founded by Harvard and MIT, for information on their 3,000 classes to audit for free. For more listings, see MOOCs at www.mooc.org. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working. Page 29
