Water helps to fight fatigue. The fatigue-fighting properties of water are another of its lesser known benefits. When the body is not adequately hydrated, it can experience muscle soreness. And fitness enthusiasts who do not drink enough water may notice their bodies require extensive recovery time after working out. Each of those consequences can be prevented by drinking enough water, and doing so can even improve performance, as studies have shown that just a 3 percent loss of body weight due to dehydration can cause as much as a 10 percent drop in performancelevel.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 55-year-old male in good health and was diagnosed with a slightly enlarged prostate several years ago. My primary care doctor said he wasn’t concerned enough to prescribe any medications. I get an annual physical, and there haven’t been any changes. However, in the past couple of years, there have been times when, once I get the urge to urinate, I’ve got to get to a restroom posthaste. But, it’s comical at times! Once, I was halfway through a three-hour road trip and started thinking I should stop. I made it all the way home without a problem, but couldn’t make it from my driveway to the restroom. I read up on Flomax, which appears to work for those who have trouble urinating. Are you aware of any over-thecounter medications for my situation? -- R.J.

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that around eight million adults in the United States experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a given year. Women experience PTSD at a much greater rate than men. Estimates from the USDVA indicate that 10 percent of women and 4 percent of men are affected by PTSD. Instances of PTSD are similarly prevalent in Canada, where the Canadian Psychological Association estimates that around 8 percent of Canadians who experience a traumatic event develop PTSD. Though no one is immune to PTSD, rates of the disorder among combat veterans are significantly higher than the rates among the general population. USDVA reports that one study of 1,938 veterans found that the prevalence rate among Gulf War veterans was around 14 percent, while an older study from the American Psychological Association found that about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans had PTSD in their lifetime.

By Keith Roach, M.D.
There are several herbal treatments (such as saw palmetto, South African star grass, stinging nettle and Africatn plum) for an enlarged prostate with recurring symptoms. Some of my patients take them and feel like they are effective, but the evidence is not definitive. Supplements are not subject to the same standards of purity that prescription medications are. Consequently, I do not recommend these treatments. Tamsulosin (Flomax) and similar drugs are safe and well-tolerated for most men.

Allergies: The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology notes that there are occasions when allergies can contribute to headaches. For example, individuals with rhinitis, often referred to as “hay fever,” can experience headaches that may result from sinus disease in and around the nasal passages. Individuals who feel their headaches could be a byproduct of allergies can consult with an allergist for tips on how to treat their allergies and potentially reduce the frequency of their headaches.

Increase omega-3 fatty acids. It is well documented that fatty acids are good for brain health and cardiovascular well-being. But these acids also may help with allergies. A German study linked foods high in omega-3 fatty acids with the ability to fight inflammation, which is a hallmark of allergy suffering. Foods that are high in fatty acids include walnuts, flax, eggs, and cold-water fatty fish.

The size of the area you want to level will determine the tools you need. For a small area, you can use a shovel to move soil from the higher to lower area, then smooth it out with a garden rake. Larger areas can require use of earthmoving equipment sized to the scale of your project. A rototiller may be a good tool to start with at any size. You should also consider

One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to what’s already in landscape, what needs back and where to address planting for next year.

know how to answer. Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale. I’ve never thought to be frightened of it.
Hunters and non-hunters alike are familiar with bright orange coats, hats, vests, and other gear that is worn during hunting season. Even though it seems counterintuitive to wear “blaze orange” in the fields or woods for fear that animals may spot you, hunters need not worry so much. Deer typically cannot recognize blaze orange attire designed to make hunters visible to other people. According to researchers at the University of Georgia, a combination of factors make deer less likely to be startled by blaze orange. Deer have less binocular overlap than humans. Binocular overlap (the area that both eyes view at the same time) allows focus on a single point and enables depth perception. Deer must shift their heads much more than humans to gain a good threedimensional perspective of an object. Deer also have fewer cones in their retinas compared to humans. Cones are photoreceptors that enable color vision and distinguish fine details. Furthermore, deer cannot readily perceive longer wavelengths of color, so oranges and reds appear more like brown or gray to them. However, deer can see blue colors more easily, so hunters may want to avoid blue jeans paired with their orange gear.

While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.
BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.
Empire State Arms Collectors Association, Inc. PO
In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.
Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.

All About Vision says aging and visual changes at any age can affect a person’s ability to see moving objects while one is in motion - as is the case while driving a car or truck. In addition, changes in peripheral vision can increase blind spots while driving and affect reaction time. Many motor vehicle agency vision tests do not take into consideration all of the factors that can impact vision while driving. Seeking care for visual problems and changing driving habits when necessary can help people stay safe on the road.

(NAPSI)—In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities, warns the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Since most people spend some 90 percent of their time indoors, the EPA adds, for many people, the risks to health may be great.
In addition, the EPA points out, the people who may be exposed to indoor air pollutants the most-the young, the elderly and the chronically ill-are often those most susceptible to its effects.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE
After all, your heating and cooling system is, essentially, the lungs of your home. The system takes air in and “breathes” air out. Through normal occupation, people generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust and chemicals. These are pulled into the HVAC system and recirculated five to seven times a day and can mean a buildup of contaminants in the ductwork.
Learn More: For further facts and tips and to find a nearby NADCA member, go to www.BreathingClean.com. For a free Homeowner’s Guide to air duct cleaning, visit nadca_homeowners_guide_print_version.pdf.https://nadca.com/sites/default/files/docs/2017/
* The oleander is the official flower of the city of Hiroshima. It was the first to bloom again after the explosion of the atomic bomb in 1945.
Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate.

3. Verify that the contractor will limit the release of dust, dirt and debris into your home during cleaning.
4. Ask for proof of NADCA membership and certification. NADCA sets the industry standard for HVAC system cleaning and its members must have at least one certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff, comply with a Code of Ethics and acquire continuing education credits.
For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau.

What’s more, clean ducts can save you energy and money. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder to maintain the temperature you desire. With a clean system, less energy is used, leading to improved cost Fortunately, effectiveness.it

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.
Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

I learned of a neighborhood group, six seniors, who are trying to keep themselves fed against all odds. ey’ve come up with a brilliant plan: At the end of each week they pool whatever foods they have le over and have dinner together. ey split the le overs to take home.
I tried it out, clicking that I have butter, milk, onion, ground beef and rice. e result came back that I could make a potential 521 recipes. Some of them actually sounded pretty good. When I swapped the ground beef for bacon, it was even better. A little suggestion note at the top of the screen said that if I had certain other ingredients on hand, I could nd an additional 51 recipes.

e woman who told me about this talked about a website she discovered where all manner of ingredients could be entered, with the machine scouting the internet for recipes that could be created using those ingredients.Whoever created the SuperCook website (www.supercook.com) did a fantastic job. Meats, grains, fruits, vegetables, dozens of cheeses, nuts, spices, dairy substitutes ... it’s all there, ready to be clicked. You only need to scroll down the le side and select the ingredients you have on hand.

Maybe you have on hand what you need to make a meal once you nd a creative recipe.

Switch from a traditional lock and key to a lockbox. Individuals who travel frequently can take a page from the realtor notebook and switch from a traditional lock and key lock system to a lockbox. Lockboxes require that a code is entered before a box containing a key can be unlocked. Homeowners who want this added measure of protection don’t even need to put a key inside the lockbox, which typically covers a lock, making it extremely difficult for potential thieves to pick the lock.
GUIDELINES FOR HOMETOWN EVENTS:
Invest in a durable, ergonomic rake to get the job done quickly and without injury. Innovators are constantly reinventing the rake, and now there are designs that do not trap leaves, saving homeowners from the timeconsuming tasks of cleaning the rake’s teeth. DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

* Shower caps can be placed over a planter and used to make a kind of greenhouse for planting cuttings. Just water and place it in a sunfilled window. Be sure to check it often, because even though it may be moderate or even cool out, your little greenhouse can get pretty hot with only a few hours of sun.

* Make your own bed buddy hot pad with a long sock and rice. Use a sock that’s knee high, and fill it about two-thirds with plain, uncooked white rice. Knot it an inch or two from the top of the rice, so it’s nice and loose. Once it’s secure, you can stick the sock into the microwave for 1-2 minutes. The rice heats up and the heat is stored in the rice. It’s wonderful for aches and pains -- or just for keeping toes toasty!

DEAR JULIE: Sadly, it o en can be di cult to tell when a guinea pig is getting ill. ey’re very good at hiding signs of illness, and often they are acutely ill before their owners can tell what’s wrong. It’s clear that you pay close attention to your guinea pigs, as you were aware of Dale’s weight and normal behavior. However, guinea pigs can become ill very quickly. You were right to contact the veterinarian immediately a er noticing Dale’s strange behavior, which I agree, could have been a sign of a stroke or heart attack.
Saturday, 10am-4pm
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My male guinea pig, Dale, was always healthy. He was fat and not losing weight. One day, we cleaned his cage and noticed that he was sticking his head out repeatedly and opening his mouth -- like yawning. e vet said to come in right away, and within ve minutes of hanging up, Dale was dead. e vet looked at him and said he looked healthy and that maybe he had a heart attack or stroke, but I didn’t see any symptoms. Any help would be great, because we have two others. -- Julie G., via e-mail

I’ll refer to the late Peter Gurney’s brilliant Guinea Pig Health Guide. One suggestion, which you may be able to apply to your surviving guinea pigs, is to have the vet listen to their heartbeat. A heart murmur can indicate valve problems. Another possibility is an undetected fungal or bacterial infection that got into Dale’s system, eventually causing a heart attack. But as you pointed out, he showed no external signs of illness.Forthis mystery, I’ll turn to my readers. Any suggestions for Julie on monitoring her two surviving cavies?Sendyour tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner. (c)com.2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

It was, as I have said, a fine autumnal day; the sky was clear and serene, and nature wore that rich and golden livery which we always associate with the idea of abundance. The forests had put on their sober brown and yellow, while some trees of the tenderer kind had been nipped by the frosts into brilliant dyes of orange, purple, and scarlet.... As Ichabod jogged slowly on his way, his eye... ranged with delight over the treasures of jolly autumn.

Recently, I was putting a melon in my car parked in the BJ’s parking lot. A boy grabbed my purse and ran. The woman parked next to me asked, “How can I help?” Then, she called the police. A woman parked across from me said, “I’ll follow him in my car.” When the thief ran into an overgrown area, she called her husband who was in line to get gas. He came and went into the bushes after the boy, retrieving my purse. These good Samaritans stayed with me until the police left, losing at least an hour of their day. The police were professional and equally concerned. I offered compensation to my good Samaritans, which they refused, saying they were glad they could help.

You have to wonder just how serious some folks are about "climate change" and the environment in general. I drove past a very popular coffee shop in [local town] and noticed a line of 9 cars waiting in the drive thru to purchase rather costly coffee or items. How do they think sitting in their cars with engines running and spewing pollution of $5.00 per gallon gas is going to save the world for climate change?
RAVES
Flags are flown for many reasons. They show all who drive by our homes what we believe in; what we feel; what we enjoy and, more recently, what we hate. The flags that used to adorn our neighborhoods have quickly changed from inviting to dividing. This is all well and good; as freedom is what the most important of all the flags stands for: the American Flag. For anyone who flies flags, remember that the American Flag is to be respected. Rules have been laid out in the United States Flag Code. One of the most important rules being this: "No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America.” This rule in particular seems to have been forgotten by some. If flags of hatred & vulgarity are that important to you, go on and fly them. Just be mindful of their placement on your flagpole.

We would like to thank the person who found and turned in our black checkbook at the Wegmans in Geneseo. We accidentally left it in our cart outside of Wegmans. We had already left when we discovered our mistake. When we got there, the cart and the checkbook were gone. The checkbook had been turned in to Wegmans by a very kind person with the words, “Keep it safe.” This person has our heartfelt thanks and deepest gratitude. He or she has rekindled our faith in people. Thank you from a very grateful couple!

Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.
