STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In 2012, the makers of Bubble Wrap-brand cushioning conducted a survey in which respondents said that just over one minute of popping bubbles provided the stress relief equivalent to a 33-minute massage. Don’t have any on hand? No worries! The manufacturer also released an iPhone app that allows you to pop virtual bubbles all day long.

Q &A with the

Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.

Master

Gardeners My sweet corn, when a couple feet tall, produces 1-3 suckers off the base of the main stalk; why? Dave P. So-called “suckers in this case are tillers. Corn tiller development is a normal part of corn physiology with variation by variety. Tillers generally indicate favorable

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County growing conditions which may mean plants are spaced too far apart with abundant moisture and excess fertility. Recommended spacing is with rows 30 to 36 inches apart with a spacing of 8 to 12 inches between plants within a row. Adverse weather

conditions such as hail and frost that damage the growing point in the stalk in early development can also cause tiller development. There is little effect from

tillers on the corn crop, and their presence is considered neutral, although there are some reports of positive and negative results.

Substitute for refined sugar: Refined sugar offers little to no nutritional value and is full of empty calories. Heathline says that honey has bioactive plant compounds and antioxidants as well as trace amounts of vitamins and minerals. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you are looking after baby kittens that are bottle feeding, when you handle the kittens, wear pants and long sleeves. Tiny kitten nails are like razor blades they are so sharp! And of course, they love to climb up on you to get your attention. * “While my family is still participating in virtual learning, it’s important that we recognize some structure. This means preparing -- or at least planning -- lunch meals ahead of time. Our house is small, and one of us is near the kitchen. This saves us two to three periods of someone banging around in the kitchen being disruptive.” -- E. in Florida

* “Want to be more organized in your home cleaning? It seems many people want to have a cleaner, more organized home but get overwhelmed when putting it into practice. Start by creating a cleaning schedule that breaks down jobs into a list incorporating tasks to be done daily, weekly and even monthly or quarterly. It takes the ‘if I can’t do everything I’ll just do nothing’ factor out of play.” -- J.M. in Pennsylvania

Fresh produce : Farms big and small are bursting w ith produce come the fall. You can find the last vestiges of summer crops mingling w ith the first fruits of autumn. Grab the last of tomatoes and start thinking ahead to apples, squashes, lettuces, and grapes. You can even get an early start on pumpkin season - both for cooking and carving. Stock the car w ith reusable tote bags and scour the farmer’s markets for seasonal finds. Chances are you also might pick up some extra treats, such as fresh honey or canned jams.

* If you haven’t worn an item in six months (of its seasonality), it’s time to let it go. That’s been the Golden Rule for as long as I can remember. I was asked recently, Does it apply this year? I think now, like always, is a good time to look critically at your overall summer wardrobe, but I would add “opportunity” to the caveats. Meaning, if you haven’t worn it because you have not had an opportunity you otherwise would have had, save it. Those work clothes will be important again! -- JoAnn

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills. “Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken. For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Classrooms & COVID:

Dr. Schulz Answers Back-to-School Questions BY AMANDA DUDEK

A

cross Rochester and the Finger Lakes Region, children have gone back to school. For many students this means returning to the classroom, whether as a hybrid with virtual learning or fulltime. During this unprecedented back-to-school experience, families find themselves with many questions. Providing clarity is Dr. Steven Schulz of Finger Lakes Medical Associates, Rochester Regional Health Pediatrician, and member of the New York State Finger Lakes Reopening Schools Safely Task Force. Several school protocols include “masks breaks” and circumstances during which masks are not required, leading parents to question what constitutes an “exposure” should a student at their child’s school contract COVID-19. The answer is surprisingly clear. “An exposure is close contact with someone with COVID-19,” said Dr. Schulz. “This is defined as being unmasked and within 6 feet of an infected person for longer than 15 minutes. The highest rate of transmission occurs from close contact.” “Mask breaks can be done safely with adequate distance, but best practice is for students to remain masked and socially distanced whenever possible, especially indoors,” Schulz continued, noting there is a lower risk of transmission when outdoors. Dr. Schulz and the Task Force are working with Common Ground to share and implement New York State Department of Health guidelines with all schools within a 13-county area. Although some cases are anticipated, Dr. Schulz encourages families that we are in an excellent place to be returning to school. “In the Finger Lakes Region, we only have a 1% prevalence rate,” he explained. “That means there is a 99% chance that a child’s symptoms are due to another virus that is not COVID.” However, Dr. Schulz advises parents to contact their health care provider for next steps if their child does develop symptoms which are also consistent with COVID. But how can a parent determine when their child’s symptoms are likely COVID-19 rather than simply a cold, allergies or something else? “That is the hard part,” Dr. Schulz acknowledges. “COVID in children tends to be milder with symptoms ranging from runny nose, congestion, cough, shortness of breath and sore throat to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue and poor appetite. What parents should be most aware of are new, different, or worsening symptoms, particularly a fever.” What happens if your child gives a positive response during the school’s screening protocol or is sent home due to related symptoms? “Students who have these COVID symptoms must have an examination,” said Dr. Schulz. “The NYS Department of Health requires that the student meet four criteria to return to school: 1. Receive an evaluation by their health care provider, 2. Have a COVID-19 test with negative results, 3. Obtain a letter from the child’s primary health care provider, 4. All the child’s symptoms must have resolved.” Dr. Schulz again emphasizes that “kids are being sent home for a wide variety of symptoms, many of which are likely not COVID related.” However, he recommends isolating the child as much as possible within their household until their test results are received. During this time, adults and children over 2 years old should wear masks and wash hands frequently, and surfaces should be disinfected. “It is better to be safe than sorry to keep the virus under control,” he added. “Stay home when your child is sick and be honest when answering screening questions.” For the children who receive a positive result on their COVID-19

test, returning to school is a little more involved. “The health department will go through contact tracing and determine when it is safe for that child and others to return,” said Dr. Schulz, noting that several advances in treatment are now available. “Household members will also be quarantined and should be tested, as well.” Within those children’s schools, the local health department will take over, determine high and low risk Dr. Steven Schulz, Finger Lakes exposures, and reach out Medical Associates, Rochester Regional to individuals as necessary. Health Pediatrician, and member of the “If everyone has worn masks New York State Finger Lakes Reopening Schools Safely Task Force at all times and has been social distancing, there should be no need for a student’s class or school to have any additional testing or to be shut down because there will have been no close contact,” said Dr. Schulz. Dr. Schulz is satisfied with the opening safety plans of area schools, which had to be approved by the state, adding that every family is different with its own tolerance of risk. “Every district is offering remote classes,” he observed. “At the same time, there are lots of benefits for attending school in person such as socialization, learning requirements, food stability and a stable place to stay. The schools are taking every precaution and are helping families to determine which choice is best for them.” Meanwhile, Dr. Schulz encourages people to talk to their local healthcare provider about their ability to get a flu shot. “It is especially important this year,” he said emphatically. “COVID-19 and the flu have a lot of overlapping symptoms, and theoretically, you could be infected with both.” He cautions that outbreaks of COVID-19 combined with outbreaks of the flu could overwhelm the healthcare system, reminiscent of the strain COVID-19 and the flu put on NYC’s healthcare system earlier this year. “Typically, the flu season starts in November, so we encourage people to get theirs by the end of October.” Regarding a future COVID-19 vaccine, Dr. Schulz believes it is only a matter of time. “There is a lot of vigorous study going into this,” he stated. “Vaccination trials are taking place regionally, and there is continued diligence regarding efficacy and safety. It will be a big step and help put this pandemic behind us.” Enjoy this article? Dust and pollen in the bedroom can make for a disruptive night’s sleep. Wash bedding once per week in hot water if dust mites are proving problematic. If pillows cannot be washed, dry them using high heat to kill dust mites. In addition, cover the mattress in a mattress protector that guards against allergens and dust mites. If pollen is finding its way into the bedroom, always keep bedroom windows closed during allergy season. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW TO REGISTER TO VOTE Election Day occurs every November, and it’s the duty of all eligible United States citizens to exercise their right to vote. Doing so is the easiest w ay Americans can actively participate in government. Participating in federal, state and local government can be done in many w ays, but few are as easy and important as voting. The follow ing are a few voting guidelines to consider as Election Day approaches.

VICTOR American Red Cross Blood Drive: Thursday, October 1, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Victor Fire Hall, 34 Maple Ave., Victor. Participants must be ages 17 or older; 16 with parental consent and bring ID. For information: redcross.org.

American Red Cross Blood Drive: Wednesday, October 7, 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 70 East Main St., Victor. Participants must be ages 17 or older; 16 with parental consent and bring ID. For information: redcross.org.

GUIDELINES FOR HOMETOWN EVENTS: Events should occur on a specific date at a specific time. Due to the increasing number of submissions, we will no longer be able to publish the following items: • Businesses/schools seeking registration for classes or program • Organizations seeking crafters or vendor • Organizations seeking donations of items Genesee Valley Penny Saver reserves the right to approve/reject events for publication. Events are published as space allows. Event deadline is Monday, 2 weeks prior to publication date R E G I ST E R A N D S U B M I T YO U R E V E N T O N L I N E AT Log in to your account or register on our website to start submitting your events today! www.gvpennysaver.com under ‘Share With Us’ Events may also be submitted at: 1471 Route 15, Avon, NY 14414

ELIGIBILITY: Only United States citizens can vote in federal, state and local elections. In many states, voters must be 18 years old to vote. How ever, some states do afford 17-year-olds the right to vote. Voter eligibility may also depend on the voter’s residency. Each state has its ow n residency requirements. To learn the requirements in your state, visit the United States Election Assistance Commission at w w w.eac.gov. REGISTRATION: Voters must register to vote before they can vote in an election. The National M ail Voter Registration Form is accepted in most states, and this form can be found at w w w.eac.gov. In addition to helping voters register, this form can be used to update one’s registration due to a change of name or make a change of address or register w ith a particular political party. North Dakota, Wyoming, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not accept the National M ail Voter Registration Form, w hile New Hampshire only accepts it as a request for an absentee voter mail-in registration form. Residents of these states or territories should consult their local state election office to learn how they can register to vote. Voters may also be able to register to vote in person at various public facilities. This varies from state to state, but such facilities may include the nearest Department of M otor Vehicles office, the local election office, public assistance agencies, armed services recruitment centers or any public facility that has been designated as a voter registration agency by the state. Some states allow voters to register to vote online. Contact your local state election office to learn if your state allow s online voter registration. The state registration deadlines vary from state to state as w ell. Contact the state election office no less than 45 days in advance of Election Day to learn the requirements in your state.

UR STRONG I want to give a huge shout out to the many nurses I met during my stay this past month. Each and every one of you in your own way made my stay a little more bearable. From the handmade chocolate milkshake to just chatting with me, from laughing at my bad jokes to drawing funny pictures on the white board. But most of all, thanks for the care and attention given to me. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! CAR ACCIDENT ANGEL I was in a bad car accident on Route 247 in Canandaigua on Friday, August 28th, and right after my car was hit I was

so scared and upset, but a very kind woman came to me and held me as I cried. She stayed right by side until the ambulance came. She was my angel, and I am forever grateful and blessed for her act of kindness. I did not get her name, but God bless you, and thank you so very much for being by my side. There are still kind people in this world, and she is definitely one of them! ABOVE AND BEYOND I want to recognize Alden Smith who owns Smith Solutions, our garbage service in Dansville. He is hands down the hardest working, most honest and respectful young man I know. He

goes above and beyond to serve his customers. Thank you for being outstanding in what I can imagine is a thankless job. A LOCAL TREASURE We arranged for a private tour of historic Valentown in Victor with a group of friends and wish to thank our tour guide, Kathryn White, and the other volunteers who made it possible. Valentown has a fascinating history and is a living legacy of the late Sheldon Fischer. It relies upon donations and volunteers to keep it operating. If you have not visited, I encourage you to check it out! THANK YOU!

BARE FEET After I left the store, you asked the cashier why I was allowed to be barefoot. (My son was behind you in line.) Had you asked, I would have been happy to explain US Department of Justice 28 CFR Part 36 (.201 and .302) protects a person’s right to go barefoot due to health, medical or disability reasons. It is a violation to ask why the person is barefoot, just as it would be to ask why a person is in a wheelchair. To educate: I have neuropathy, deadening the feeling in my feet. The greater my points of contact with the ground, the less likely I am to fall. If you pay attention, you will notice there is no longer a sign on any public entity stating no shirt, no shoes, no service due to this law. So, if you see me barefoot, please do not run to get the manager. I am a person with disabilities.

OUT OF SEASON My brother has 30 acres of land and has been watching a large turkey family in the fields eating grasshoppers. Something spooked them and they all flew across the road onto a certain property. This guy grabs his gun and starts shooting! My brother flipped out as he watched this. This person said he wanted a turkey for dinner after he lied about it saying the turkeys scared his horses, claiming he shot over the horses at the turkeys. My brother does not know for sure if he hit one, but if he got the hen, those babies surely won’t make it. I think these people are shooting deer, as well as rabbits and anything they can eat. What makes them special that they can shoot everything that is out of season? If I catch them doing this, I will turn them in.

OVERPOPULATION The only real way to solve the pollution and trashing of the earth’s environment is to have fewer people on the planet. Overpopulation is the source off the problems, and until people stop having more than two kids, the problems are only going to get worse. That is why there are over 8 billion people on earth. Magazines can publish good ideas and suggestions, which is fine, but in the end, it is too many people are the basic problem. RESPONSE TO “RABBLE ROUSERS” I am so sorry if you are having difficulty opening a small business in whatever township you live in. I know that where I live, we had a beautiful hardware store set up business. It was so wonderful to have a place so close to home. They once told us what a difficult

Just want to express my appreciation to the two Ontario County Sheriff’s Deputies who rescued me when I carelessly locked my keys and phone in my truck when I stopped at a veggie stand on 5 and 20 on Sept. 9th. Also, my gratitude to Laura Jo at the stand, who called for help. Thank you all! THANK YOU! I would like to thank the gentleman in the black truck who was in front of me at the McDonald’s drive-thru in Lakeville on Friday, Sept. 11th around 2:30pm for paying for my order. It brightened my day and was greatly appreciated!

time Town Hall gave them when they wanted to open. Yet, we can have a place that brings down the neighborhood. That is fine with Town Hall, which I find odd. The hardware store unfortunately had to close its doors. How sad! I wish you well with your endeavors, but it does seem to be an upward climb for some.

“I’m dreading fall. It is a terrifying season,” he says... “Everything shriveling up and dying.” I don’t know how to answer. Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale. I’ve never thought to be frightened of it.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Cologuard Test Worth Risk of False Positive ---

Our Office Offers: • Wisdom Teeth Extractions • Implants • Sedation Available • Financing Options • Laser Dentistry

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old man in good health. At my recent annual physical exam, my physician ordered a Cologuard kit to be sent to me to screen for colorectal disease. I have never had symptoms of disease or problems with any part of my gastrointestinal tract. I had two colonoscopies at different times several years ago, the results of which were negative. When I got the kit, I read the patient guidelines and learned that the Cologuard test could result in false positives and that there is an unspecified increase in the risk of false positives for persons over the age of 75. A positive result from the test requires a follow-up colonoscopy, which is also riskier for elderly patients. Since I am in good health with no symptoms of any disease, I decided I did not want to risk a false positive result from the test, which would require a follow-up colonoscopy. Did I make the right decision? -- E.G. ANSWER: Cologuard is a brand of test that looks at DNA in stool for evidence of cancer. Certain DNA mutations are highly suggestive of cancer. In addition, Cologuard does an immunochemical test looking for blood. Because it combines these two techniques, Cologuard is more sensitive than only a test looking for blood. Compared with colonoscopy, Cologuard is about 92% sensitive in finding cancers, meaning it will miss about 8%. With improved sensitivity comes a lack of specificity, which means you could have a false positive result. The Cologuard can say that you have an abnormality when a colonoscopy would indicate normal. For 45% of people with a positive Cologuard test, no abnormalities will be found upon colonoscopy. You are right that false positives are more prevalent in older individuals. There are two reasons that I think the Cologuard is still a reasonable choice, despite the fact that it isn’t as good as colonoscopy. The first is that I continue to recommend a screening test for healthy 77-year-old men, and although colonoscopy is my first choice, a normal Cologuard test prevents a need for colonoscopy, and a false positive would lead to the same colonoscopy you would have gotten anyway (although there probably is more anxiety after a false positive test). The second is that a person with an abnormal Cologuard and a normal colonoscopy may be at risk for an abnormality that wasn’t found on colonoscopy. A study looking at people in this category found a 25% risk of abnormality on follow-up colonoscopy, if the Cologuard was abnormal again one to two years later. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had lung surgery in 2014. The scar is still red and sore. I got no instructions on how to deal with it. Do you have any suggestions? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: That’s a very long time for the scar to still be red and sore, and I would encourage you to have the surgeon or your regular doctor take a look. For people with redness and soreness in a scar shortly after surgery, I recommend silicone gel (there are many available), as it has been shown to be effective. Many people recommend vitamin E oil, but well-done studies have shown this does not help and may harm the cosmetic appearance. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Badly Behaved Dogs Need Basic Commands DEAR PAW’S CORNER:

DEAR EDWARD: Every dog should be trained to respond to five basic commands: come, heel, sit, stay and lie down. Dogs need to obey their owner the first time and every time a command is issued. That may sound a little harsh, but a dog that can’t be controlled is a dog in danger. Owners need to be able to recall a dog that has slipped its leash before it runs into traffic. They need to make sure their dog will walk beside them and will sit calmly on command, especially when another dog approaches. Their dog needs to stay in position when told to do so -- whether sitting or lying down. Dogs aren’t robots, though. Like us, their discipline and training will slip if not regularly reinforced. Think about how often you and I give in to temptation and take that second cookie (or third or fourth or fifth). Just as we humans sometimes need reinforcement of good habits, our dogs need regular reinforcement of basic commands. When owners spend more time working one-on-one with their dogs, they frequently report that undesirable behaviors happen less often. The time and attention that owners give can quickly blunt attention-seeking behaviors. The AKC has a good breakdown of the basic dog commands here: www.akc. org/ expert-advice/training/ and search for “5 basic commands.” Energetic young dogs can be a handful sometimes. If you are having trouble getting your dog to respond to basic commands, enlist the help of a professional trainer.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Teach kids how to develop budgets. Another problem many first-year college students encounter is an inability to effectively manage their money. Whether you plan to give kids an allowance while they are in school or intend for them to work part-time for their spending money, use senior year of high school as an opportunity to show kids how to budget their money. If they don’t have accounts already, open bank accounts in your youngster’s name, and insist that he or she start paying for his or her expenses via these accounts. Resist the urge to give high school kids gas money or money for shopping trips if they have already spent their allowances so they can learn how to effectively manage money between paydays. In addition, teach kids about the right and wrong ways to use credit cards, including the importance of paying balances in full and on time. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
