MOMENTS IN TIME * On Aug. 31, 1997, shortly after midnight, Diana, Princess of Wales dies in a car crash in Paris. She was 36. Her boyfriend, the Egyptian-born socialite Dodi Fayed, and the driver of the car died as well. A swarm of paparazzi on motorcycles had been aggressively tailing their car. (The History Channel)

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
I seem to have a knack for growing plants where they don’t belong. I am trying to grow date palms in containers and have three date palms ranging from 3” to 6” tall. With winter fast approaching, how should I keep them warm enough to survive and thrive? - Josiah C. Date Palms originate from North Africa and Asia and can tolerate some cooler temperatures. In our
climate in winter, however, they will need protection from a hard freeze which could kill them. Bring them in when temperatures fall into the 40’s at night, and find a bright, sunny window inside with room temperatures of 65-75 degrees. Water them sparingly in winter, letting the soil dry out between waterings. Make sure to provide good drainage. If they stand in water for long periods (a day or more), the roots can be damaged, and the tree could die.
While you should fertilize the trees about once per month in spring through fall, do not fertilize at all in winter. Avoid cold drafts near your young palm trees, and they should winter well and be ready to set out next spring and continue to grow and thrive.

PEST CONTROL
When deciding how much to prune, less is usually more. All pruning can put some level of stress on the tree and increase its vulnerability to disease and insect infestation. A good rule of thumb is to never prune more than 25 percent of the crown. According to experts at TreeHelp.com, living branches should comprise at least two-thirds the height of the tree. In some instances, the rules may need to be bent if trees are interfering with utility lines or to meet community laws. However, always prune minimally to avoid damaging the tree.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Do Homework First on Clinical Trials --DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has had dementia for over two years. There is an ad in our local paper for an Alzheimer’s disease study. It says, “This study will assess how safe and effective an investigational drug is at slowing the progression of early (prodromal) or mild Alzheimer’s disease.” Is this protocol legit? I don’t trust this type of ad not coming from a hospital. I couldn’t find any information about the sponsors of the research. -- J.N. ANSWER: I was able to find the trial, called the Graduate II trial, which is sponsored by the manufacturer of the drug being tested, called gantenerumab. This drug is designed to reduce the size of the amyloid protein plaques in the brain, which are suspected of being the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s disease, and to prevent new ones from forming. It is indeed a legitimate trial. The best place to find out about these is on the clinicaltrials.gov website. The trial is in phase III. The drug has passed both phase I trials, which are designed to look at safety, and phase II, which look at both safety and effectiveness. Now the investigators are studying the effectiveness of the drug in a larger population, usually for a longer period of time. Drugs that do well in phase III clinical trials may be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Alzheimer’s drug trials are difficult, because the disease often progresses slowly, and large, time-consuming trials are necessary. In general, I encourage people to consider participating in clinical trials, as they are essential for clinical advances. For gantenerumab in particular, phase I and II trials did show that the drug is effective at reducing the amount of amyloid plaque in the brain; however, clinical trials did not show improvement in memory and brain function. The new trial is using a higher dose and recruiting patients with earlier stage illness. I don’t have enough information to answer whether your wife, having had symptoms for two years, might be eligible for this trial, but I would certainly encourage you to find out more about it. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently started transitioning to a plant-based diet for preventative health reasons. While discussing the benefits of nuts and seeds with a dietitian, they had a disclaimer that flax seed can interfere with medications and to eat them two hours before or one hour after taking medications. I would not sit down and eat a handful of flax seeds, but now I am afraid to use them in the meals I prepare at all. Can you help me make a good decision? -- J.E. ANSWER: For people eating reasonable amounts (like a handful or two) of flax seeds as part of a meal, it is unlikely that they would interfere with medications enough to cause any significant problem, for most medications. There are two situations that might merit concern: In powerful anti-clotting agents, such as clopidogrel, flax seeds might prompt increased activity. Secondly, flax seeds may lower blood sugar a small amount. In combination with insulin or oral diabetes drugs, the blood sugar could possibly dip lower than expected. I doubt either of these interactions is likely to cause harm, but it is reasonable to discuss with your doctor if you are on one of the classes of medications mentioned. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc., All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Future Generations Are Counting on You The designation "senior" covers a long stretch of ages, some of us much older or younger than others. It's the older ones who perhaps have the biggest lesson to learn ... that time does not stretch forward indefinitely. I learned that lesson today when I received word that one of my oldest relatives had passed away. His name was Henry, and I never met him. I hooked up with him and his lovely wife many years ago when I started my genealogy hunt. We came together like family, which we were. Christmas cards, newsy letters, new genealogy tidbits, just as though we'd always known each other. I would visit someday, I always told myself, not only Henry and his wife, but all my other newly found relatives in their area. Time and physical distance can't change DNA, and I suspect that should I walk through their small town, I would be easily identified as one of them. All the questions I had, I told myself, could wait until I visited. I waited too long. We owe it to the family generations that come after us to leave them as much information as possible. But where do we start? We start with the family members that are ahead of us in age. We ask questions, we take notes, we write things down. Depending how "senior" we are, we might have parents still living, or if we're younger and have lucky DNA, we might even have a grandparent or two. Type up your information, save the file and print it out. Make copies and hand them out to as many of your relatives as you can. You might look at the generations after you and think they won't be interested in their ancestry. You'll probably be wrong. One of them, maybe years from now, will start to wonder ... and your information will be there. Don't wait. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Rochester Women’s Network:
Supporting Women Today
BY AMANDA DUDEK
W
hen the Rochester Women’s Network (RWN) was founded in 1978, classified ads still specified “hire male” or “hire female.” The fact that many now find this shocking is a testament to the efforts of several groups, including those like the RWN which support professional women. While some things have indeed changed for the better, the RWN continues its critical support of the professional and personal lives of women. As a member-driven, women’s networking organization, RWN’s leadership roles are mostly filled by women in business. “We have a board and committees which provide opportunities for individuals to come and sit in the positions of leadership in our nonprofit,” shared Jennifer Cave, VP of RWN Membership and owner and Chief Operating Officer at Rochester Research Associates. Some things, however, have remained quite the same. “One of the first workshops RWN taught work/life balance and how you find it,” recalled Cave. “Today, it is still one of our hottest issues, and we continue to bring the experts in to talk about it. The wage gap also remains a popular topic.” In fact, the RWN has addressed many topics since its inception at a conference for women and money. Over 300 women met to transform the “old boys” networking concept into a new woman’s specialty. It was the conference planners themselves who became RWN’s founding mothers, holding their first meeting in April 1978 and reaching 383 members by May of that year. Using strong, active words such as “support, empower, inspire, connect, grow, and succeed,” it is perhaps the RWN mantra that is its clearest indicator of what women were and are up against: “We’ll never ask you to sell chocolate bunnies or bake cookies.” The group has been more than true to its word. “We have grown to offer special interest groups with focus on personal, professional and social interests,” shared Cave. “Wine tasting, local restaurants, leadership, business referrals... RWN focuses on the overall picture, helping women personally and professionally, taking a holistic mind, body and soul. We also usually hold two major events: The W Awards at which we recognize women who are doing something outstanding in our community for other women – such as Kitty Van Bortel and Louise Slaughter – and a symposium on topics of professional development.”
RWN members support each other and work hard but never forget to have fun along the way! “We also typically hold a monthly networking event, free to our members. Members can sponsor our monthly networking event to promote their business,” Cave continued. “Finally, as a membership driven organization, we have several committees on which our members can serve, providing them with multiple learning and leadership opportunities in our nonprofit organization.” Naturally, like many other organizations and businesses, RWN has been unable to hold its major events. This has been quite impactful as RWN is funded by donations and membership. “We have been doing online programs and things like that, but our major events bring in thousands of dollars.” Cave explained. “We extended everyone’s membership for 60 days, just the same, and we are hopeful that we will increase our membership and people start jobs again.” Those who join will find a world of support waiting for them. “In RWN, we have many members who are introverts,” said Cave. “We help our members find their confidence. That is one of the best things we can provide: helping women find their voice and inner strength.” Diversity and inclusion have also long been an important piece of RWN. Leadership in RWN, spearheaded by their VP of Diversity and Inclusion address these important pieces at every board meeting. “We pride ourselves on being

Jennifer Cave (far right) with some of her fellow RWN members!
inclusive,” shared Cave. “Still, we constantly challenge our thoughts to see if we might possibly be excluding others in any way.” RWN is currently working to ensure that interpreters are available for any members who are deaf or hard of hearing. “We do not want to leave anyone behind,” Cave added. “We are very open to input.” The support and community at RWN have proven effective. “Two success stories leap immediately to mind,” she shared. “About ten years ago, one member, Lynn, wanted to start her own business. She joined RWN, and when she speaks about it, she is brought to tears when she shares how much growth this organization has brought to her. Another is KC Rossi who joined RWN and within her first year of putting in effort and taking advantage of our opportunities, she was able to add significant revenue to her business.” Personal experience confirms what Cave has witnessed. “I originally joined RWN because I was taking over a business and was looking for networking. I was searching for an insurance agent, an accountant, those things, which I was able to find. At the same time, I was surprised to find that the relationships I have made here have been so much more that I would ever have expected. The members are so caring and supportive, breaking any negative stereotypes.” Cave encourages women to join RWN and fully embrace the opportunities it brings. “If you are involved 100%, you will not regret it,” she said. “Whatever you are looking for at RWN, whether it’s personal growth, professional development, friendships, you will be able to achieve it if you put in your all and participate. If you need support, we are here.”
RWN focuses on the overall picture, helping women personally and professionally, taking a holistic mind, body and soul approach!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor, when she’s doing yardwork, routinely puts her cat into something that looks like a chicken coop. It has a screen enclosure and a little wooden house. I’m very worried that the cat is too hot sitting in the enclosure and will get injured. Should I tell her to keep her cat inside? -- Worried Neighbor in Wichita DEAR WORRIED: Your neighbor is probably putting the cat inside a cat enclosure -- or maybe a repurposed chicken coop. Cat enclosures are getting very popular, especially in the cities and suburbs. These are a good way for an indoor cat to spend some time outdoors without the risk of running away, getting lost or being attacked by another animal. It can reduce exposure to fleas and ticks, too. If the cat has a shady place to hide from the sun while inside the shelter, and a bowl of fresh water, it is just fine to be in there for short periods (an hour or two). Since your neighbor is outside and within sight of the cat, it’s clear that she is keeping an eye on it. If you want to have a conversation about it, be polite. “That’s a neat enclosure; what a great way for your cat to get outside for a while!” is perhaps the best icebreaker in this case. Otherwise, if the cat does not appear distressed and is sitting or lying calm and alert, then there’s nothing to worry about, especially if your neighbor brings the cat inside after finishing the yardwork. If you have serious concerns (the cat is in the enclosure 24/7, looks very distressed or unhealthy), consider striking up a conversation or, if you’re uncomfortable doing that, contacting animal control. Send your tips, comments andquestions to ask@pawscorner. com.

The Season was waning to its close. The gardens showed but little of the ravages of autumn as yet. The noble avenues of trees were still in their glory of fulness and expansive verdure; although here and there a few fallen leaves seemed to have fluttered down to earth as premature heralds of decay. The later flowers were gorgeous in their many-coloured splendour, though their earlier sisters had already lived the best of their lives, and now drooped their heads, as if to hide their blighted charms. ~J. Palgrave Simpson, For Ever and Never, 1884, wording slightly altered
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Whenever a stew or soup recipe calls for whole herbs to be used and then taken out later, I put them in a tea infuser. I could never seem to get them all before, and inevitably someone would be served a whole bay leaf or such. This makes it foolproof.” -- J.R. in Georgia
EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF LABOR DAY Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime fun and a day when thousands of people gather across the country for their final big barbecue blowouts. Labor Day has evolved into a holiday about relaxing with friends and family, and that has led to its origins getting somewhat lost in the celebratory shuffle. Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day was established to highlight the achievements of American workers, both from a social and an economic perspective. Labor Day highlights one of the main benefits of being a citizen of the United States, the ability to have professional freedom and contribute to the prosperity and strength of the country through gainful employment. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. Celebrated annually on the first Monday of September, it is believed that Labor Day was first promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which also organized the first labor-related parade in New York City. Although the true fathers of Labor Day remain a topic of debate, some historians maintain that Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor put forward the first Labor Day proposal in May 1882 after witnessing a labor festival in Toronto, Canada. Labor Day was largely celebrated in the past with parades, speeches and a day off of work for the country’s workers. Similar festivities occur to this day, with the gradual introduction of other events that mark the unofficial end of summer.

THANK YOU, DOUG! While driving down Latta Road, in Greece, last Wednesday afternoon, I drove over a muffler in the roadway. It was wedged under my car. I immediately pulled over in the median. Very soon after, a loader type vehicle was coming along. I gestured to the driver, Doug, a Town of Greece employee. He stopped to help. After jacking the car up slightly, he was able to pull the muffler out. Thank you so much ONE LAST CHANCE The July 20/27th (double issue) of Time Magazine had numerous features on just how dire our planet’s environment is, at this point in its life. The writing was exceptional as many topics were covered. Certainly, the COVID 19 is at the top of our list in terms of catastrophes, but the heartbeat of our earth is racing toward life support and is a dangerously close second to the COVID. Do yourself a favor and find this important issue and take the time to come up to speed on what we need to do to save our planet! One redeeming aspect of this terrible pandemic is that it has made us stop (pause), access and alter our lifestyles for the greater good. We so desperately need to do the same for Mother Earth! TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners. EMPLOYMENT
