Great gifts for seniors Every holiday shopper ends up with at least one loved one on their shopping list who they can’t seem to find anything for. Some people seem to have it all, while others may be less than forthcoming with regard to items they may need or want. Many seniors tend to fall into the latter category. Shopping for holiday gifts for seniors can be difficult if shoppers don’t know what seniors want. But the following are a handful of gift ideas that might make this holiday season that much more special for seniors. Books A 2015 survey from the Pew Research Center found that 69 percent of adults age 65 and over acknowledged reading at least one book in the previous 12 months. That makes books a good bet for shoppers who don’t know what to get their 65-and-over loved ones this holiday season. But shoppers might want to opt for more traditional print books rather than e-books, as the survey found that only 15 percent of readers age 65 and over had read an e-book in the previous 12 months. Gym membership According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, more than 80 percent of adults do not meet the guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities. That can be especially troubling for seniors, who are at greater risk for osteoporosis, a medical condition in which age-related tissue loss contributes to brittle, fragile bones. Physical activity, including muscle-strengthening activities like weight training, can help combat osteoporosis. Family members stuck on what to get aging loved ones may want to

consider gifting a membership to a local gym. Many gyms offer heavily discounted memberships to seniors, and such gyms may even offer senior fitness classes at no additional cost. Travel gifts Many retirees love to travel, but not every senior has the means to take off for parts unknown. A 2013 survey from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® found that 25 percent of retirees admitted they wished they would have saved more for retirement travel. Holiday shoppers can light up seniors’ smiles by gifting travel gifts this holiday season. One idea is to transfer airline miles to an elderly loved one so he or she can get a free or discounted flight. If that’s not a possibility, some new luggage or a Global Hotel CardTM sponsored by Orbitz®, a gift card that can be redeemed at 70,000 hotels across the globe, is sure to please. Family time Shoppers who are especially stuck on what to get seniors for Christmas can just resolve to spend more time with their elderly loved ones. Many seniors genuinely have everything they need, and such men and women may only want to spend more time with their children and grandchildren. Make a New Year’s resolution to spend more time with the special seniors in your life if the perfect gift is eluding you.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!

7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

Switch to More Efficient Lights. A great way to ensure holiday displays consume less energy is to change the bulbs being strung. Incandescent lights can use 80 to 90 percent more energy than LED lights. Gradually replace older light strands with newer, energy-efficient LEDs. Not only do LEDs require less energy, but they also can last longer than incandescent bulbs, meaning you won’t have to replace them as frequently as more traditional bulbs. Furthermore, lower wattage usage means you can attach more strands of lights together safely.

Serves 6 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 pound chanterelles or other wild mushrooms, cleaned and cut into bite-sized pieces Salt and freshly ground black pepper 11/2 pounds haricots verts or green beans, trimmed - Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. - Meanwhile, heat the butter and the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute, or until it becomes translucent. Add the mushrooms, cooking them until they give off their juices and then reabsorb them, 5 to 7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep the mushrooms warm on the stovetop. - Add the beans to the boiling water and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until slightly tender (haricots verts will take less time than green beans). Drain. - Transfer about half of the mushrooms to a small dish and keep warm. Add the beans to the mushrooms in the skillet and stir to combine. Mound the beans and the mushrooms gently on a serving platter and top with the reserved mushrooms. Season again with salt and pepper.

I am expressing my deep appreciation to the people who helped me at the time of my auto accident in Geneseo in the early evening of October 31, especially the fellow who was able to release my seat belt and to help extricate me from my overturned vehicle. Thanks to Rebecca and Tom, Geneseo EMS Medical Technicians, who attended me during the transit to UR Medicine, Strong Memorial Hospital, and to the ambulance driver. My appreciation to all the Doctors, Nurses and Medical Technicians thru Dr. Eric Davis’ supervision at Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department. A thank you to Geneseo Police Officer, Benjamin Swanson, who participated in my extrication from my vehicle, and helped in getting me onto the ambulance stretcher and into the ambulance. I thank all of you in my prayers.

The staff at Suburban Animal Hospital has always been wonderful but our family was truly blessed by them when we had to make the difficult decision to euthanize our dog Grace who was suffering from stage 4 lymphoma. Even though they had a full evening schedule they accommodated us and allowed us all the time we needed to say goodbye. Their compassion made a difficult situation easier. When we picked up Grace’s ashes, not only were they in a decorative box, but we also received a cast of her paw print. Our family also received a nice sympathy card from the vet who treated her. In addition to all this they made a donation in Grace’s memory to Rochester Hope for Pets. A heartfelt thank you to Suburban Animal Hospital and their staff. I would like to thank all the restaurant and businesses that took the time to give free meals and items to our veterans. They certainly deserve it and it is wonderful that you took the time to show them how much they are loved.

My husband & I were at one of the local pizza places in our town eating our dinner. When we came out about a half hour later, we noticed that our vehicle had been keyed from the driver’s door all around to & including the back. We filed a police report but since the cameras didn’t pick up your image there is nothing we can do except to pay the deductible of $500.00 so that our vehicle gets fixed. We are seniors on a fixed income so to have to spend the above amount because of your malicious act makes us angry. Who do you think you are & what gives you the right to damage property that doesn’t belong to you? We know you are a mean person who took out your frustrations on someone who you don’t know. Do the right thing & own up to your crime. What happens when Wi-Fi is down? Or electricity is out? It becomes nothing more than a bunch of techno-garbage

with no life. The best thing to do, to maintain a desired, good quality lifestyle, if that is what you want, is to have a good old-fashioned back-up plan. Like, for ex. a landline phone that doesn’t rely on cell towers or satellite signals to be used. And it isn’t just communication when technology goes down; it’s some of the cars/ banking, etc., too. So many things that rely solely on technology have made humans less selfsufficient and because of that, vulnerable to govt. corruption and terrorism, too. So, the best way is to re-learn how to be selfsufficient without technology, and that will set you free. Good Luck.

This is for the lady who walks in the morning on a road with no street lights or sidewalks. Please get a reflective vest or shirt to wear on your walks! Gray or blue colors don’t stand out in the early morning light and it will be getting darker soon! You could even carry a flashlight to see you better! It would really ruin yours and someone’s day if you got hit. Reflective vests don’t cost much, it could save your life!

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT While new homes are being built to be more energy efficient than ever before, thanks to a growing green building movement and increasingly strict building codes, the age of existing dwellings continues to present challenges. More than 40 percent of the housing stock in the United States was built before 1969 and simply wouldn’t stand up to today’s standards. Yet, much can be done to help homeowners improve their building envelope to reduce energy use and increase efficiency. Improving your home’s energy efficiency can help save money, keep you more comfortable, reduce pollution, and prevent global warming.

F.F. TAXIDERMY Four Inducted into Fairport’s Education Wall of Distinction By Christina Lewis Gursslin The Fairport Central School District honored four new members to its Education Wall of Distinction in an induction ceremony held on November 16th at Fairport High School. The inductees, who were selected based on their lasting positive impact on the educational process for Fairport students, are Dave Dunn, Robert Longhouse, Linda Northrup and Mark Trawitz. Dave Dunn has been doing what is best for students in his role as both teacher and administrator at Martha Brown Middle School for 40 years. He is in his 22nd year as principal and previously taught mathematics for 18 years. He can be seen in the bus loop, the hallways or cafeterias at any time during the day interacting with students, staff and parents. He leads by example and his relationship with staff is his most important asset. He holds a monthly principal’s forum offering parents an opportunity to come together and discuss topics pertaining to middle school students.

Robert Longhouse was a dedicated physical education teacher for Fairport for over 30 years teaching at the middle and high school level. He has positively impacted the lives of thousands of students as well as student-athletes in his additional role as an athletic coach for girls’ soccer and softball and boys’ basketball. Although retired from teaching, he continues to motivate and inspire student athletes in his current role as girls’ soccer coach. Linda Northrup has been inspiring students in her food service career at Fairport since 1988 and is known as “Lunch Lady Linda.” She began her career as a food service helper at Brooks Hill, and has also held the titles of Fairport High School baker and assistant cook manager at Jefferson Avenue and Fairport High School before becoming the cook manager at Jefferson Avenue in 2003, where she is today. She has received recognition and many awards for her service to Fairport and is best known for her cheerfully decorated kitchen and themed months when she and her team wear costumes that bring smiles to the faces of students and adults alike. Mark Trawitz is a dedicated educator who has been making lasting impressions on his students and colleagues since 1992, having taught at both Martha Brown and Johanna Perrin Middle Schools. He is active in his current role as English teacher at Johanna Perrin and serves on many committees in an effort to improve student learning in Fairport. He has also served as lead English teacher and volunteered for and organized many events with a keen understanding of what matters to students.

Congratulations to this year’s inductees!

DEAR DR. ROACH: Six months ago, I noticed a “bald spot” on my right cheek. It is round and about the size of a 50-cent piece. I’ve never had this problem before, even though I am going bald. I am generally healthy. I am concerned that this might be an infection or cancer. There is no itching, redness or discoloration of any sort. Can you address this issue? I am worried that it will spread, and I want to know if it will grow back. -- Anon. ANSWER: This sounds very much like alopecia areata, which usually is found on the scalp, but can be in any area of the body with hair. It probably is an auto-immune disorder, and it happens frequently in people with autoimmune thyroid disease, such as Hashimoto’s or Grave’s disease. People with alopecia areata should get screened for thyroid disease. It usually starts in people under 30. About half of people will have their hair regrow within a year. If the skin otherwise looks completely normal, it is very unlikely to be a cancer or infection. A dermatologist should be able to confirm the diagnosis. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there any type of corrective surgery for eye “floaters”? -- J.W. ANSWER: Floaters are bits of cellular debris that float inside the vitreous humor in the eye. The eye has no way of getting rid of these, normally. Most people are not bothered by them, and they do not need to be treated unless they are interfering with vision. However, if they do affect vision or are very bothersome, there are surgical techniques developed to deal with them. I’ve had readers write in that they had treatment with laser or with vitrectomy. At least one ophthalmologist of one of my readers has a specialty practice just treating floaters. The sudden appearance of floaters can be a sign of serious disease, especially a detached retina; this should be evaluated immediately, especially if any changes in vision are present. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: For two to three months, I have been taking 17 grams of polyethylene glycol mixed in 8 ounces of water three times a week. Finally, I have found something that is effective in relieving my lifelong chronic constipation problem. In the past two months, however, I have lost approximately 10 pounds and at 5 feet, 4 1/2 inches tall, I now weigh 100 pounds. Could the weight loss be related to the use of the polyethylene glycol? -- P.D.M. ANSWER: Polyethylene glycol (Miralax and others) is a nonabsorbable, inert substance that carries water with it as it goes through your digestive tract. This gives the stool more moisture and makes it easier to pass. It is considered very safe. I don’t think that it is responsible for 10 pounds of weight loss. I would be more concerned about an underlying medical issue, especially one that might cause constipation, such as thyroid disease. Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Pay In Advance Not all restaurants will allow it, but when making the reservation ask if it’s possible the pay the bill prior to the dinner. Ideally, the bill should not come to the table. However, if the restaurant won’t allow the bill to be paid in advance, grab it once it’s left on the table and then quickly look it over before paying. Never argue over the bill when hosting a client for dinner. If need be, save the receipt and call the restaurant the following day.

But there are many environmentally friendly practices that business owners and their employees can adopt around the office.

ASSISTANT MECHANIC $13.50-$14/hr. Full time, year-round. Benefits (401k, health, vacation) Tools provided.

Six of the 10 college majors with the highest salaries for new graduates have something to do with engineering. So says a survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which notes that computer engineering majors earned the top spot with an average starting salary of $70,400 for graduates who finished school in 2012. Chemical engineering majors came in second with an average starting salary of $66,4000, while computer science majors, with average starting salaries of $64,400, came in third. The NACE salary survey relied on information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the United States Census Bureau and Job Search Intelligence, a compensation management firm. In addition to computer science, the survey, which examined starting salaries for new graduates in more than 90 fields of study, found that finance, construction science/management and information sciences and systems were the only majors outside the field of engineering to crack the top 10.
