GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod and Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, and Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re doing better on the flexibility issue, but you still need to loosen up a bit to show you can be less judgmental and more understanding about certain sensitive matters. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your personal aspect continues to dominate this week. But try to make time to deal with important career-linked matters as well. A change of plans might occur by the weekend. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Excuses are not really needed for much of the confusion occurring this week. However, explanations from all parties could help in working things out to everyone’s satisfaction. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That surprising (but pleasant) recent turn of events continues to develop positive aspects. But be prepared for a bit of a jolt on another issue that needs attention. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss might bring you that attention you want. But are you prepared for all the explaining you’d have to do? Better to use more subtle ways to make your bid. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With education continuing to be a strong factor this week, this could be the time to start learning some new skills that can later be applied to a bid for a potential career move. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might do well to reconsider some of your current time priorities before you get so deeply involved in one project that you neglect meeting a deadline on another. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) With an important decision looming, you need to be careful about the information you’re getting. Half-truths are essentially useless. Get the full story before you act. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Find out what everyone’s role is expected to be before accepting that workplace proposal. Getting all the facts now could prevent serious problems later on. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A flexible position on a workplace matter could be the best course to follow during the next several days. A personal issue also benefits from an open-minded approach. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Involving too many people in your workplace problem can backfire. Remember: Allegiances can shift. Ask trusted colleagues for advice, but don’t ask them to take sides. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Before submitting your suggestions, take more time to sharpen the points you want to make. The clearer the presentation, the more chance it has to get through when submitted. BORN THIS WEEK: Your clear sense of who you are gives you confidence when you need to tackle difficult situations. Meet Abby!

1-877-DOG-YARD (1-877-364-9273)

I’m your typical sweet as pie girly girl! When I was only a few months old, I had to get one of my front legs removed, but that hasn’t slowed me down one bit. I’m the cutest tripod around!

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

In-Kennel Webcams!

When she came back outside, however, her car—and Molly—were gone. She called Verizon to see if her phone could help track her car, and a Verizon customer service representative saved the day.

I love exploring the world and strutting my stuff on walks, or as I call them a “flexi”. Mom always lets me bring a special toy on our walks and keeps a watchful eye to make sure I don’t drop it and leave it behind. I also love chasing “the spot” (a laser pointer) around the house, and when I’m finally all tuckered out, cuddling up into Mom and Dad’s arms! Ahh, what a beautiful life!

“When Mary called in, I was taken aback with her car and dog being stolen,” said the tech expert who answered the call. “I really felt for her. I work at home and my two dogs are at my feet all day.”

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

A BELOVED DOG, A STOLEN CAR AND... A HAPPY ENDING (NAPSI)—It started out as a normal day for Mary Harrison—until she briefly left her car running outside of her home with her shih tzu Molly in the backseat and went inside for just a second.

They pulled up Harrison’s account and saw that she had a Hum by Verizon device in her car. Hum is a vehicle diagnostic system from Verizon Connect. It takes the guesswork out of driving with connected car technology, so you can stay in touch with emergency services and your loved ones on the road. For instance, if Hum detects a crash, it can notify emergency services and send help your way. With Hum’s vehicle diagnostics feature you can check your car’s health from your phone and detect issues before you go. You can also schedule maintenance reminders and Hum will text or e-mail you when it’s time for a tune-up or an oil change. And if your car is stolen, as in Mary’s case, Hum can send your car’s location to local law enforcement. “I knew with Hum there was a lot we could do to help her. I pulled up the step-by-step troubleshooting guide to reset her password and bring up the vehicle’s location on her phone. As soon as she saw the car on her phone, she started to cry.” The car was not far from Harrison’s home. She could have walked there, but the customer service representative advised her to stay safe, call the police, and recover the car together. When Harrison got to the car, her dog was still there, safe inside. “It made me feel great to be able to help her,” the customer service representative said. “I know that if it were my dog in the car, that would be my biggest concern, too. I wouldn’t even care about my car or my stuff, just getting my dog back safely. I was so impressed by how quickly and accurately Hum found her car. It’s awesome that we have this great technology available.” Learn More: For further facts about how helpful Hum can be, go to www. Hum.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We lost a set of car keys months ago. We had an app that told us generally where we left our them which was in the parking lot of the Twisted Rail. I was skeptical that we would ever find our keys again and I took a risk that To the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”. I read several objections to your comments. One said you should not say Merry Christmas as you may offend someone. Another said you are being insensitive and disrespectful. I applaud you for saying Merry Christmas. For those who wish to change the way we or the large percentage of people living in the U.S. acknowledge the spirit of the season, I say toughen up! Political correctness is insensitive to the majority of us Americans. You claim that you want to keep our dollars local, I think not! someone turned them in. When I finally got around to searching for the keys, I went directly to Twisted Rail based on GPS signals. Not only did they hold on to the keys that were turned in, they waited several months for us to track them down. When I finally went to talk to them, they acted like I was a regular, and just returned the keys and told me they were waiting for me. Even though I’ve never been a customer, I have a great respect to this company for going a little extra to help those in need. Thank you for being

greeting they receive, the color of people’s clothes, lack of manners, etc., etc. I am sure these issues are very important to the people who write them but, in the meantime, our elected officials are acting like toddlers, doing nothing to improve our lives and mismanaging our tax money. I think that we need to get past the everyday annoyances and focus on the big, important things that are going on around us that really need to be changed.

This might sound pathetic but I get some of my entertainment from reading the I gotta vent column. Everything was going great until they changed the pictures by the subtitle. And when I opened the Penny Saver today, guess what I found not only are there no pictures but it is now called “positive vibes only”. And “gotta rant”. Seriously...why?

Local full-service gas station. Great service, speedy friendly workers. Great customer service! Dave’s Ice Cream had just opened for spring. My husband loves their twists. We pulled into the service window and I opened my car door to push the bell. While I was placing our order, my purse fell on the ground, under my car. I had been to the ATM, my driver’s license, SS number, cash, medical

A wonderful family turned in my purse (untouched). I was so thankful! I tried to reward the clerk, she would not hear of it. Do not know who the family was either, but hope they get their just rewards. Big thank you to the plow guys, out at all hours, keeping our roads plowed and safe all winter!

and can only do so much. Therefore, I am asking our communities to first please stop using the roadways as a garbage can and second when you clean up your property don’t ignore the trash along the edges and consider going above and beyond and clean up more along the road. Third consider individually or as a group adopting sections of roadways. The environment is the responsibility of all. This problem is almost entirely preventable and it is entirely fixable. Let’s be part of the solution with a little elbow grease.

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CHOOSING CARPETING There are many different types of carpeting, some of which are best suited to certain situations. For example, plush and saxony carpets are better in low-traffic areas. These carpets may show footprints and also vacuum tracks and dirt, but they’re higher on the comfort spectrum than other types of carpet. Berber, which is more flat and dense, helps mask stains and tracks. It is durable in high-traffic areas. Textured carpets like frieze are cut from fibers of different heights, so they mask stains and are also softer on the feet than berber.

Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you. Page 19

Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

Retired Pittsford Teacher, John Strazzabosco, Takes a New Look at Poverty By Amanda Dudek

T

hirteen years ago, retired Pittsford teacher, John Strazzabosco, needed to understand the issue of poverty that plagued people he met while doing volunteer work. His research and experiences during the years that followed led him to shocking conclusions. In his newly published book, Ninety Feet Under-What poverty does to people, Strazzabosco shares his findings, hoping to spread awareness and inspire solutions. John Strazzabosco has long had an interest in helping others. “I was in the middle of the 4th year of my engineering degree at the University of Cincinnati when I realized this was not what I wanted to do,” said John. “After two years in the US Army as a hospital lab technician, I decided to use my math background to become a teacher.” He then taught in Pittsford for the following 33 years, even chairing his department a couple of times. Long interested in social justice, John recalled, “I realized I did not truly understand poverty and how it works.” Five years after he retired in 2001, Strazzabosco felt driven to understand the complexities of poverty. “I did volunteer work with people in poverty so that I could learn more about it,” John shared. “I became involved with the Rochester Children’s Zone Effort, and the church I attended started partnering with a Rochester church, as well.” These eye-opening experiences sparked in him a determination to end the poverty crisis. “When I saw what the kids went through, I had to know why,” John recalled. “My wife, Jeanne, and I have been involved ever since.” Jeanne runs a program called Kicks for Campers which hosts a Kickball Tournament to raise money for kids to go to Camp Cory on Keuka Lake. For Strazzabosco, those experiences led him in another direction. “I shared with people in our church about poverty,” John explained. “Sister Janet Korn, who helped me develop my presentation, asked if I would use it to help train mentors as a part of an Action for a Better Community self-sufficiency program. I agreed, also working with Focus Plus.” When asked to make a presentation for a training arose at the Hillside Crestwood Center, he jumped at the opportunity. “That was really the beginning for me,” John shared. “All kinds of opportunities have started popping up. I have since presented programs for Brighton, Webster-Schroeder and the Pittsford Teacher Center to name a few.” “Sadly, many people still think about poverty in terms of stereotypes and judgments,” said John. “Believing that people in poverty are lazy, do not want to get a job and want to live on welfare. However, the people I’ve worked with are typically anything but lazy, and whether they receive welfare or not, they are also often working 1-2 jobs, which do not pay enough.”

“Over the years, I have identified 90 impacts that poverty has on people,” John explained. “Most of these are experienced at one time or another, sometimes all at once. They have these 90 impacts assaulting them all the time. This is true for situational poverty, and much more so for generational poverty.” “In poverty, you might feel guilt and shame,” John elaborated. “It starts deteriorating your mind and your body…and it starts early,” he added, suggesting poverty is now being found to affect unborn children. “Poverty’s assaults on children can be silent,” John continued. “As an infant, you experience attachment through eye gaze, touch, and tones of voice. If the infant’s parents are experiencing their own guilt, shame and stress, that affects how they relate to the infant.” “Hunger is another silent assault,” John continued. “Also, poverty is the #1 predictor of child abuse,” he added, careful to emphasize that many parents living in poverty do not abuse their children. “Once I started making a list of these impacts, I didn’t think I was going to be able to stop,” said John. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more than the 90 I reported.” “About 6 years ago, I decided to write a book about what I have learned,” shared John. “Now, Ninety Feet Under-What poverty does to people has been published.” Poverty is a serious issue with long-lasting effects on those who experience it. Yet, in spite of the enormity of this issue-traditionally 11-15% of Americans and between 20 and 25% of all children in the USA live in poverty-he believes there is hope. “People must first have their basic needs met, and in poverty, this isn’t happening,” said John. “Food, rent, sickness, shame, cold, hunger, fear: these critical factors are so demanding that attention must be given to them first. Work, education, going to school, career: these might very well get lost when one is totally overwhelmed by making decisions in survival mode.” Strazzabosco hopes he can help others understand poverty’s impacts as well as encourage creative solutions. “I want to see poverty end,” he said, emphasizing that it is up to all of us to find effective solutions before they can be implemented nationally. “First, we must believe we can solve this problem and end poverty together, then we have to find John Stazzabosco at his Book Launch on a way to do it.” June 18, 2018 Please contact John through www.JohnStrazzabosco.com for more information, presentations and book club discussions. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Ten Easy Ways To Get A Dose Of Vitamin N(ature) In Just Ten Minutes (NAPS)—A growing body of scientific evidence proves getting outside (i.e., being an “outsider”) is good for our health and well-being. Exploring and appreciating nature—in our own backyards, community parks and school yards—reduces stress, improves memory, boosts heart health, and offers a host of other benefits for our minds and bodies. “Having a living landscape of grass, trees, shrubs and flowering plants is good. Using this outdoor space to reap the health benefits it offers is even better,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), whose Foundation created TurfMutt, an environmental education and stewardship program that teaches the value and benefits of the outdoors. “Getting outside, even for just 10 minutes, can do much to boost your mood, productivity, and quality of life.” On its 10th anniversary, TurfMutt shares 10 easy ways you can enjoy nature in under 10 minutes. Take a walk. Lace up your athletic shoes and head out for a walk around the block or to your neighborhood park. While you’re out, commit to turning off your cell phone and enjoying the natural setting around you (it’s just 10 minutes, after all!). Get your kids moving. A rousing game of tag or hide-and-seek in the family yard is a great way to counter computer and screen time. Play with your dog. A dog’s favorite “room” of the house is your family yard. Take inspiration from your pooch and spend a few minutes outside playing Frisbee or fetch. Clean up your outdoor living room. Make simple work of yard chores by breaking them up into smaller chunks. Ten minutes is enough time to put a serious dent in weeding a flower bed, sweeping off the back patio, or picking up debris from your lawn. Plant something. It is spring planting season, so take 10 minutes to dig a hole and introduce a new plant or get started on your vegetable garden or flower beds. Dine alfresco. Taking a meal outside is one of the easiest—and most nourishing—ways to enjoy the outdoor space around you. Have breakfast with the backyard birds. Lunch at a park near your office. Enjoy your coffee break under a shade tree. Study or read a book. Take the “work” out of homework by moving study or reading sessions to your backyard or community green space. Swap a (short) commute for walking or biking. Do you typically use your car to run down to the mailbox, to a nearby convenience store, or to run other nearby daily errands? If it’s not too far, take a short walk or ride your bike instead. Meet outside. Fresh air can be a catalyst for fresh ideas, so take your next brainstorming session for work outdoors. Need to have a heart-to-heart with your child? Scientists have discovered that communication between parents and children is more connected when conducted outside. Sit back and relax. Sometimes, the best thing to do is absolutely nothing at all. Spend some time in a hammock, spread a blanket out on the grass, or take a meditation break outside to soak up the nature around you. Learn More For more information on the benefits of our living landscapes and how to be an outsider, visit www.SaveLivingLandscapes.com. For more about the TurfMutt program, go to www.TurfMutt.com.

• On April 15, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln dies from an assassin's bullet. Shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington the night before, Lincoln lived for nine hours before succumbing to the severe head wound he sustained. • On April 19, 1876, a Wichita, Kansas, commission votes not to rehire policeman Wyatt Earp after he beats up a candidate for county sheriff. Earp often worked in law enforcement, but his own allegiance to the rule of law was conditional at best. Wyatt was one of the Earp brothers, who gained fame in the shootout at the O.K. Corral in 1881. • On April 20, 1926, inventor Lee de Forest demonstrates Phonofilm (music recorded on motion picture film) to movie studios, but they were not interested in "talking pictures," believing sound was a novelty.

For all those clamoring for the Hocus Focus, here it is… You’ll find it each week in the Active Living 50+ Section. Enjoy!

Getting outside is good for your mind and body.

PARENTS SAY THEY’RE ‘YODA’ ABOUT FINANCES

REAL ESTATE SECTION

(NAPSI)—Parents identify with Yoda more than other Star Wars characters when it comes to family finances—according to a survey by New York Life. Yoda is patient, uses past experiences to guide future decisions and finds it important to teach the next generation. Yet, many parents aren’t following Yoda’s most famous saying “Do. Or do not. There is no try” when it comes to taking the most basic step to secure their family’s finances: buying life insurance. Research continues to show that parents recognize the value of life insurance in protecting their family but haven’t been able to “Do.” Here are four common reasons (and the reality): 1. It is hard to get started—Not anymore. Companies are doing a better job at providing simple information and financial tools on their websites. For example, on New York Life’s site, you can now create a plan around what’s most important to you and access educational material to help you get started. 2.

I have it at work and that is enough—Not really. Life insurance through work is very beneficial but typically covers one year of your salary. If you were to die, that benefit could run out quickly. Experts agree that most people need 10 or more years of their salary covered by life insurance.

3.

I can’t afford it—You probably can. People are surprised when they find out how affordable life insurance can be. While having a child brings lots of new expenses, life insurance should be at the top of that list so that your child’s plans for the future can stay on track even if the worst were to happen.

4.

My life could change—Not to worry. Whether you change jobs, have more children, welcome your parents back under your roof or need to pay for college, your life insurance plan can change, too. A professional life insurance agent can help you build a strategy that provides the flexibility you need.

Choosing the right type of life insurance depends on your needs. For example, term life insurance is a good place to start if your needs are temporary or short term. It offers affordable coverage for a set period of time. If your needs are long term, a permanent policy (most commonly whole life) might be the best option. In addition to the insurance protection, you build up cash value within the policy that grows on a tax-deferred basis and, if structured properly, can be accessed tax-free. If needed, the cash value can be accessed via loans to help pay for a child’s education or any other important financial need (though loans accrue interest and reduce cash value and death benefit). You may find that a combination of permanent and term insurance is best for you. To start planning for your family’s future, visit the Agent Locator at www. newyorklife.com. REAL ESTATE

Medication Doesn’t Stop Vertigo’s Spinning ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a terrible case of vertigo. I’m not sure what causes it or what I can do to prevent it from happening to me again. I was given two medications, promethazine for nausea and meclizine for vertigo, but still the problem persists. Can you offer some kind of help? -- J.G. ANSWER: Vertigo is the sensation of movement when not moving. Although it is classically described as a spinning sensation, some people feel as if they or the world is moving in other ways. There are many causes of vertigo, but we generally break them down into two groups: peripheral causes, from the vestibular nerve, which connects your brain with the organ of balance in the inner ear; and central causes, from the brain itself. Peripheral causes are much more common and generally are labelled “benign,” even though they can be quite severe. Central causes are most commonly attributed to vestibular migraine and poor blood flow to the brainstem. Only a careful exam and, occasionally, more sophisticated tests can reveal the underlying cause of the vertigo. The most common cause is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and I suspect that is what you were being treated for, having received a nonspecific treatment for vertigo. Although it is commonplace, I disagree with this treatment if it is used for more than a day or two, and then only in people whose symptoms are severe. Most people get relief from an office treatment called the Epley maneuver. They can continue at home with other exercises. I would suggest that you ask your doctor about these procedures, and if he or she isn’t familiar with them, it might be wise to consult with an expert. In any event, vertigo is a symptom that can arise from several distinct medical conditions. You should find out what your diagnosis is. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion of taking a vitamin B complex capsule. A friend recommended it, but the dose of one to two capsules a day makes my urine turn bright-yellow. The daily values are from 3,000 to 8,000 percent, and that seems pretty high to me. I don’t enjoy taking it, because it smells and tastes unpleasant, but I’m mostly concerned about getting too much of a “good” thing. -- R.W. ANSWER: Here’s the good news: B vitamins are necessary, and your body is able to get rid of any excess. In fact, the yellow color of your urine is exactly that, your body spilling off the B vitamins you don’t need. There are a few medical conditions that benefit from B vitamins. Here’s the not-so-good news: You almost certainly don’t need so much, and most people don’t benefit from taking vitamins at all. A healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables gives you most of the B vitamins your body needs. (Vitamin B-12, by contrast, is found only in animal products, which is why vegans require supplementary B-12.) If you choose to keep taking a vitamin just for general health, I would change to a brand that has lower doses and isn’t unpleasant to take. I don’t recommend stopping megadose multivitamins suddenly. This is particularly important for vitamin C, where symptoms of deficiency can show up temporarily in people who suddenly stop high doses. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE

Local landscape company looking to add team members to our crew.

(NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.”

Foreman & Laborer

Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it.

Experience preferred but not a deal breaker. Clean drivers license is a must for foreman position.

Email to reply MRGRASSLLC@GMAIL.COM A strong professional network can help professionals advance their careers and help others looking to do the same.

Open Part-time Service Desk Position: Looking for an individual who has had cashier or service desk experience and can handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment. Must be customer service oriented and be a team player, and a good communicator. Must be available to work weekends. Interested applicant may apply on-line at

For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
