HOW TO KEEP GRILLED FOODS WARM Place foods in the slow cooker. If the stove is not an option because other components of the meal are being baked or broiled, grilled foods can be placed in ceramic slow cookers with lids. This can potentially keep foods warm for longer periods of time than aluminum foil tents without sacrificing flavor.

The Gospel Corner DO YOU FEEL INSIGNIFICANT? If we could listen to the thoughts inside a person’s mind, we might hear something like this: “My life seems so empty and useless. If only I knew that I was worth something. I want to accomplish something worthwhile. I want my life to count.” The emptiness and insignificance felt by many people today is overwhelming. The suicide rate is at an all-time high. What causes this feeling of emptiness and insignificance? Adam and Eve rebelled against God. Instead of doing God’s will and fitting into His plans, they chose to disobey God. Their decision affected the entire human race. Romans 5:19 says, “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” The Lord Jesus Christ came to reverse the process by a life of obedience to the Father. His life had real significance; and yours can, too, if you accept Him as your personal Saviour. Then you will embark on a new life of significance and meaning as you begin to carry out His divine plan.

Q&A with Bob Hobday, Director of the Antique Wireless Museum in Bloomfield : Part II BY DP DUNN
N
estled in the small town of Bloomfield, on Routes 5 & 20 sits an unassuming collection of buildings, housing a world-class assembly of vintage and modern communications equipment. The museum was founded in 1952 by three Kodak engineers who saw the need to preserve original wireless technology and its history. We sat with Bob Hobday, Director of the Antique Wireless Museum, and asked him a few questions. We invite you to pull up a chair and join us as we continue our interview!
Post-COVID, we will restart our Radio Fab Lab classes for youngsters. This is unique, as younger folks attend and build with an adult relative or friend. This is really an opportunity for both to enjoy and strengthen their relationship, while learning new skills and building fun things! It has been a wonderful program and was greatly enjoyed; we can’t wait to bring it back soon.
What would benefit the Museum right now; what are your greatest needs or wishes? As with all non-profits, financial support of our classes and educational outreach would be appreciated. Volunteer Museum Historians are always needed, and we provide training. You can support our multiple activities by becoming members of AWA, and all are welcome to join.
We’ve covered a lot of ground here; any other thoughts to share? We are the best kept secret in the Finger Lakes, and I would hope you would visit the Museum and tell all your friends. We are located at 6925 Route 5, Bloomfield, NY 14469. COVID restrictions mean that we have visitors by appointment only. Normally, the Museum is open on Tuesdays 10 am to 3 pm and on Saturdays 1 pm to 5 pm. The admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and veterans, and AWA members and kids 19 and younger are free. Visit www.antiquewireless.org or call 585-257-5119
What sort of ‘services’ does the Museum offer to the community, to tourists, and other visitors? We have a research library focused on communication technology which contains about 8,000 books, 15,000 magazines and catalogs, 750,000 pages in our file cabinets, and 2,000 records, videos, recordings, and slide shows. Until COVID, we were offering Radio Fab Lab, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) classes for youngsters 7 to 15. Those will resume hopefully in the fall. Since we started in 2017, we have had 87 youngsters attend our multi-day class series. We offer Learn It, Build It, Fix It classes for adults. The current series is Basic Radio Repair 101 and this summer we will offer Build Your Own Guitar Amplifier Kit. This will be a repeat of a very successful series in 2020. Volunteers are available for in-classroom visits within Monroe and Ontario Counties to discuss the development of communications technology and its history. All tours of the Museum are conducted by knowledgeable Museum Historians who tell the stories behind the artifacts in the Museum.
Have you heard any interesting stories, or met interesting people through your affiliation with the Museum?
"We are the best kept secret in the Finger Lakes!"
So many of our visitors have stories to tell about their radios or their work in communications or about their family’s connection to communications. I’ve met veterans who have used various pieces of equipment in the service or in combat. I’ve met folks who manufactured or repaired many types of radio and telephone equipment displayed here. There are just so many, and each of their stories are wonderful; I enjoy each one. We hope to see you and your family at the Antique Wireless Museum soon! Robert Hobday is the Director of the Antique Wireless Association. He is a licensed amateur radio operator, N2EVG. Mr. Hobday retired from RG&E / Energetix in 2007. Mr. Dunn is a member of the Antique Wireless Association and an amateur radio operator, AB2NM. He retired from a career in commercial nuclear power in 2020. This is his first article for GVPS.
The AWA and the Museum is 100% volunteer. We have 1,350 international members of the Antique Wireless Association, the sponsor of the Museum. Members receive a quarterly AWA Journal, a 60-page journal on all aspects of communication technologies, and an annual AWA Review, a 300-page book with 6 to 8 in-depth papers on the history or other aspects of communications.
What exciting projects or plans are in the works for the next 12 months? We have 90% of the fundraising goal toward a new addition to the Museum to house an amateur radio station. We will offer members with ham radio licenses the ability to operate some of the classic receivers/transmitters.

Yard salers beware! So much work goes into setting up a yard/garage sale. Ours was last Friday & Saturday in [local town]. Sales were very slow, and on Saturday, we had a thief visit us. When picking up, we noticed a $10 item was missing. Someone was low enough to steal it. It must have been someone without a conscience. Thanks a lot! So everybody, watch all the people you let into your sale. Like I said, sales were very slow, and it takes so much work to put things out and pack things up afterwards only to have someone do this, too.
S E V RA St. Martin's Sale Thank you to everyone who supported the St. Martin Lutheran Annual Garage Sale, either through your donations or purchases. Proceeds go to support underprivileged children in our area. Unexpected generosity This past week, I ran into Penfield Wegmans to pick up a few things we needed for Dad's Day brunch. When I went to check out, I couldn’t find my wallet. I carry a huge purse which makes finding things a challenge. While I was still searching, a woman came up out of the blue and offered to pay for my groceries. I thanked her for her generosity. I am a firm believer in paying it forward which I will do in some fashion! Clean up thanks! To all those - Village Crew, Law Enforcement, Fire Department, Utility Crews & more - who helped clean up the village and restore power to Avon after the storm on Monday: thank you! Your hard work is very much appreciated! Play ball! It was great to have Avon Little League back this year! Thank you to all of the parents who made it possible, taking care of everything from organizing to coaching!
True Colors Flying the American Flag means freedom for all Americans. Freedom means freedom of choice, freedom to live your life as the best you can, freedom to let other people live their lives regardless of color. Too many times lately, people are only looking at the color of someone’s skin but not what is in their heart. The color of a person’s skin does not define the kind of person they are. To those who only look at skin color: shame on you! Social Security Theft From every paycheck since I was 15, the state of NY has taken out taxes and social security. For 40 years, I have been paying Social Security and have been receiving an annual letter detailing what my Social Security benefit will be based on what I earned and paid into it. I could not opt out of it and use that money for the here and now. So, it is my Social Security. It was established by FDR in 1935 to give the working class some financial security as they reached retirement age. It’s not for the politicians to spend or for the offended-by-everything generation to spend. It’s mine. It’s your parents’ and your grandparents’, not yours to denounce as not our right to recieve. If you want it abolished, go ahead and lobby for its end, but don’t you dare tell us 50+ individuals that we are causing the deficit. We paid into it and deserve what we were told was coming to us. What you are suggesting is the equivalent of stealing, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
Thank you, neighbors! Thank you to all our neighbors for helping us pick up our fallen tree limbs and to the people who stopped to see if we were okay! We live in such a great community!

The American Academy of Dermatology actually recommends an SPF of 30 or greater. Make sure the product is broad-spectrum, meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays. Volunteers… We Need Your Help! Featured Nonprofit:
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
C. Diff Tricky to Treat, But Rarely Terminal ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: In December, I developed an abscess in my jaw from food getting caught in my tooth. I went to see a local dentist who prescribed clindamycin and metronidazole. I came down with a case of C. difficile. I have since found evidence that multiple antibiotics and clindamycin are causes of C. diff. I am getting mixed messages about my prognosis. Some medical people are telling me it’s not a big deal and to just wash my hands a lot. My primary physician, however, gave me the impression that this is basically a terminal diagnosis. She told me how sorry she was and that I had been a very healthy person but am not any longer. She told me that it will most likely recur, and every time it does it will be more difficult to treat until I become antibiotic resistant, and that people die from it. She also told me that she would set me up for the standard yearly appointment, but that I should come see her whenever I need to. I am paranoid about what my future holds and what, if anything, I can do. I would like your opinion of this situation. Any guidance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. -- Anon. ANSWER: Clostridium difficile (“C. diff”) infections are common but can be serious. As you correctly note, many antibiotics are associated with the acquisition of symptomatic C. diff infections, and although clindamycin is the best known, other antibiotics (quinolones, amoxicillin and related penicillins) are actually more common. The antibiotics kill off large numbers of healthy bacteria, allowing the unhealthy C. diff to take over. The cardinal symptom of C. diff is watery diarrhea, at least three loose stools in 24 hours. Abdominal pain and cramping, nausea and poor appetite are common. Fever is less common. Symptoms can start during antibiotic treatment or up to a month after completing antibiotics. Treatment is stopping the antibiotic if possible and if still being given. Antibiotic treatment against C. diff is with the newer drug fidaxomicin or with oral vancomycin; unfortunately, fidaxomicin is ridiculously expensive -- a course of fidaxomicin is $3,000 via goodrx.com in the U.S. at the time of writing. A course of oral vancomycin costs much less, often less than $200 through the same website. If neither of these is available, metronidazole is a less-expensive alternative. Fidaxomicin has the lowest risk of recurrence of the infection, and many experts will reserve it for a person who has recurred after oral vancomycin. For the unusual person who continues to recur after antibiotic treatment, fecal microbiota transplants (processed from stool of healthy donors) have been safe and effective. I am disturbed that you got the impression that C. diff is a terminal diagnosis. Although in rare cases, hospitalized patients can get so sick that they can die from C. diff, this would be very unusual in less severe disease, as in someone who is able to go home from the hospital. Handwashing is necessary to reduce infection to others. Avoiding drugs like Prilosec that suppress acid can help prevent recurrences. Finally, probiotics (live healthy bacteria) may be of use in reducing infection and recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. YARD SALE TIPS
Bring small bills. In a world where credit and debit cards prevail, yard sales stand out as cash-only endeavors. Save the seller the hassle of breaking big bills and using up all of his or her change by bringing along small denominations and even some change.
Shop with a plan. If you are looking for something specific, you have the best chance of finding it by shopping early. For the best bargains, shopping toward the end of the sales may garner some deep discounts.

Pets Shell-Shocked by Nightly Fireworks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is with the constant setting off of loud fireworks almost every night for the past year? My two dogs are so stressed out that they are sleeping with me at night. -- Larry H., via email DEAR LARRY: I experienced similar nightly fireworks throughout the pandemic. There are many theories as to why fireworks were so popular, but I prefer to go with the most obvious: Some people had little else to do, and no regard for their neighbors. My pets are not too fazed by the occasional crackle of firecrackers, which still goes on here even though the pandemic restrictions are mostly lifted. But some of our neighbors had much bigger fireworks and enjoyed setting them off around midnight or later, with no warning. My pets came flying into the bedroom when these were set off. As a pet owner, it’s frustrating to see our companions suffer from someone else’s carelessness. Even worse, authorities haven’t seemed interested in enforcing noise or fireworks regulations. As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, plan ahead to make things easier for your pets. Create a safe space for your dogs to go to when fireworks go off. Some dogs absolutely need this and can’t be comforted by a hug or treats. A friend of mine created a little den in the corner of her mudroom using scrap plywood, putting bedding and old clothes inside so her giant mutt “Ollie” can hide from loud noises. Talk to your dogs’ vet as well about medication to keep them calmer through the holiday, which may help them better deal with the trauma caused by fireworks. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

This year’s honorees (with place of residence and employer) are: Laurie Abbott (Silver Springs, NY); Genesee Valley Publications Benjamin Albert (Rochester, NY); Balbert Marketing LLC Emily Bennett (Penfield, NY); Paws and Claws Pet Care, Inc. Loren Blankfield (Rochester, NY); Stellar Kitchen & Bath Jack Camp (Rochester, NY); KeyBank Madison Como (Canandaigua, NY); Dixon Schwabl Kelly DeGroff (Fairport, NY); Keller Williams Realty Christy Fessler (Rochester, NY); Nazareth College Josh Frizzell (Henrietta, NY); Livingston Associates, Inc. Jen Gibson (Rochester, NY); Gallo & Iacovangelo, LLP Mayank Kakkar (Rochester, NY); Eastman Dental Allison Knauf (Brighton, NY); Monroe, Inc Reece Kreilick (Rochester, NY); Northwestern Mutual Nick Mancuso (Rochester, NY); Elevate Teresita Muniz (Pittsford, NY); CVS Pharmacy Matt Newcomb (Webster, NY); Passero Associates Kyle Palmer (Rochester, NY); Independent Financial Representative Rachel Pawlak (Rochester, NY); Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP Kevyn Rustici (Rochester, NY); ADP, Inc. Alexandra Bennett Schmidt (Hilton, NY); Constellation Brands Inc. Ryan Shekell (Honeoye Falls, NY); Arthrex Tyler White (Rochester, NY); Brite James Zobel (Rochester, NY); Doughboyzroc The Rochester’s Finest are honored for their career success, commitment to the community and dedication to raising funds and awareness to help support CF research, patient services, and other mission-based initiatives of the CF Foundation. The program runs for 16 weeks and culminates in a celebration of their accomplishments on October 14, 2021. Included in the program are opportunities for professional development, networking, and developing skills as a leadership volunteer. “Together with our community we are transforming cystic fibrosis from a deadly childhood disease to the best story in medicine,” said Patty Schwarzweller, AED of the WNY Chapter. When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was first founded, children with CF typically did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are achieving milestones like going to college and starting families of their own. We are making incredible progress, but we can’t do it alone. We invite everyone in the Rochester community to help us make “CF” stand not for cystic fibrosis, but for “Cure Found”.
About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. Based in Bethesda, MD, the Foundation also supports and accredits a national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care for a chronic disease. The CF Foundation is a donor-supported nonprofit organization. For more information, please go to www.CFF.org.

Leave opportunities to just sit and enjoy your surroundings. Perhaps other members of the family or traveling party have their own ideas for entertainment. A rigid timeline can make the vacation seem more like a commitment rather than an opportunity to let loose and stop watching the clock.

USE LESS ENERGY WHEN THE WEATHER WARMS Put that backyard grill to good use. Plan meals around outdoor cooking so the ambient heat will stay outside and you will not have to turn on the oven or the stovetop. Include side dishes, such as salads, fresh vegetables and fruits or gazpacho, that can be served cold. If you must heat something indoors, try doing so in the microwave.

ELECTRICAL IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-ityourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
Smart watering conserves water and saves money Start early. Homeowners may feel that the hottest times of the day are when lawns and gardens will be most in need of water, so that’s the best time to set sprinklers or grab the hose and get to work. But in many areas, watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when summer temperatures tend to peak, can be both wasteful and ineffective. That’s because watering between those hours will cause much of the water to quickly evaporate, robbing lawns and gardens of the water they need to withstand the heat. Homeowners who water when water is most likely to evaporate may feel they need to water more, and that only wastes water. It’s best to consult a local landscaping professional in your area to determine the best time to water each day, but in many regions the best time to water is between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., when temperatures are generally lower, the sun is not at its peak and winds are not as strong.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal.

The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

Time for SPring Cleaning?
CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE
We can help with:
Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Staying Hydrated in Summer Heat If there is any mantra we need to repeat this summer it’s this one: drink more liquids. A university study revealed that 80% of heat-related deaths were in people over the age of 60. We need to do everything we can to avoid dehydration when the weather is hot. As we age, many of us don’t have the same body temperature regulation. Poor circulation and lack of thirst can make us vulnerable to the effects of heat. Of those, lack of thirst is the easiest to address, and drinking more water doesn’t need to be a chore. Find out from your doctor just how many ounces you need to drink in a day. Some medications, such as diuretics, might change how your body reacts to heat and dehydration. Ask whether you need an electrolyte-replacement drink for added potassium and sodium. By the numbers: Buy several smaller water bottles and fill with water as many as you need each day to reach the required number of ounces. Keep them on the kitchen counter, where you’ll see them. Keep oranges, strawberries and watermelons handy, or make your own fruit popsicles. Keep an eye on the TV news and weather. Know what temperatures and humidity are expected during the day, especially early afternoon. If you walk for exercise, try to go in the morning. Make a few calls and find out about any cooling stations near you, or air-conditioned spaces such as a mall, if you don’t have air conditioning at home. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

* There’s been a lot of talk at my house about kitchen gadgets that do double duty, especially since I have made whipped cream for the first time -- in my coffeemaker! I have a French press that I rarely use, until now. Add heavy whipping cream and a bit of sugar to the pot, and use the screen to whip the cream by rapidly pumping it up and down. Magic! -- JoAnn * “To save money on electricity costs, hang jeans and other heavy clothing to dry first. White or light towels and garments especially love the sun. When they’re mostly dry, pop in the dryer to fluff. * “I love to eat pancakes, but I don’t have time to make them every morning. I make a very large batch on Sundays and reheat them through the week. In order to recreate that fresh-from-the-pan crisp (which you don’t get if you microwave them), I put them in my toaster.” -- P.E. in Ohio * “I use an extra coffeepot to brew a pot of hot water. I use the water for both tea and instant oatmeal packets in the morning.” -- M.S. in Nevada * “Before I go to the beach, I freeze an ice-cube tray full of lemonade. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In early 2015, Mattel released Hello Barbie, an interactive talking doll that didn’t just repeat preprogrammed phrases, but could actually hold a twoway conversation. The doll raised major concerns over privacy, however, since the discussions between it and child owners were recorded and sent to thirdparty vendors. Goodbye, Barbie!
DID YOU KNOW? Charcoal grills can remain hot for hours, even long after the flames have extinguished. As a result, charcoal grill users should recognize that their jobs are not done once the burgers, hot dogs and other foods have been removed from the grill. To safeguard against fires resulting from still-hot charcoal grills, grillmasters should avoid moving the grill while the coals are still burning hot. In addition, avoid placing any flammable objects close to the grill while the coals are cooling down. Potentially combustible items should also be kept far away from charcoal grills, ideally in locations where gusts of wind cannot blow them toward the grill. Charcoal grill owners can also inspect the metal grates on their grills to make sure they are not rusted. Damaged or rusted grates can make it possible for items to fall down onto surfaces below the grate, increasing the risk of fire. Another way for charcoal grill users to make using their grills more safe is to avoid the use of starter fluid or other igniters once the coals have been ignited. Doing so only increases the risk of fire or accident and is unlikely to help the coals maintain a strong flame that lasts long enough to cook foods quickly.
