Provide distractions: M any young children cannot sit still for long and may need a series of distrac tions to keep them entertained throughout meals. Pack a bag of tricks that includes toys, games, books, and even a digital devic e tuned to kids’ favorite programs. I really love those things my humans wear on their feet, they taste good, too. Most of all I like going on walks and sniffing everything!

Your How seniors can simplify everyday tasks The ability to perform everyday tasks is something many people take for granted. But as men and women approach or exceed retirement age, many may start to struggle with chores and tasks they have performed for decades. Physical limitations are a common side effect of aging. But such limitations do not have to prove too big a hurdle for seniors to clear. In fact, there are many ways for seniors to simplify everyday tasks while maintaining their independence. · Embrace technology. Even the proudest Luddites cannot deny technology’s potential to make seniors’ lives easier. Seemingly simple tasks like shopping for groceries and vacuuming a home can be difficult for seniors with dwindling or limited mobility. But seniors with Internet access in their homes can order their groceries online and then pick them up in-store or have them delivered, saving them the trouble of walking around the store. With regard to vacuuming, autonomous vacuum cleaners have removed the need to use traditional vacuum cleaners. Certain autonomous vacuums employ sensors to detect dirty spots on the floor, and these vacuums can even be programmed to clean the home while residents are out of the house. · Upgrade bathrooms. Tasks associated with personal hygiene also tend to be taken for granted until they become difficult. But a few simple bathroom alterations can help seniors safely navigate the bathrooms in their homes so they can maintain their personal hygiene without fear of injury. Grab bars can be installed on shower walls so seniors can safely get in and out of their showers and bathtubs. Such bars are both effective and inexpensive, and some do not even require any drilling to install. Specialty grab bars, tub grips and tub transfer benches are just a few additional products that can make bathing easier for seniors who have lost or are starting to lose some of their physical strength. · Get “smart” on the road. Seniors who are experiencing mild
MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel
• On Jan. 26, 1838, the first Prohibition law in U.S. history is passed in Tennessee, making it a misdemeanor to sell alcoholic beverages in taverns and stores. You can only perceive real beauty in a person as they get older. ~ Anouk Aimee
difficulty driving can make getting about town that much easier by plugging their smartphones into their vehicles or making use of the various apps that have become standard in modern vehicles. For example, the maps app on a smartphone can be connected to a car and direct seniors to their destinations, saving them the trouble of remembering all the ins and outs of how to get a particular destination. Seniors also can employ apps to help them find their vehicles should they forget exactly where they parked in crowded parking lots. Such apps can increase seniors’ comfort levels on the road while helping them maintain their independence. · Downsize. Whether downsizing to a smaller home or simply downsizing a lifestyle, seniors may find that living smaller is akin to living simpler. Empty nesters may find they no longer need several bedrooms in their homes, and moving into smaller homes can reduce their daily workloads while also clearing out clutter that can make performing everyday chores more difficult. Men and women accustomed to hustle and bustle may also find that cutting back on professional and/or personal commitments gives them more energy for everyday activities while enriching the commitments they continue to maintain. Aging men and women can employ various strategies to simplify their lives and maintain their independence well into their golden years.

Genesee Valley Penny Saver’s Own Jenn Howe Helping to Build Spirits to Beat Cancer Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at U of R Noyes Memorial Hospital sometimes find surprise gift bags left for them by a kind stranger. A small blanket, a soft toothbrush for sensitive gums, lotion for dry skin - hardly treasures in ordinary life but all the world when a person is fighting with life on the line. A Dansville woman is behind these gifts, not just at U of R Noyes but as far away as Florida and the Carolinas. Jennifer Howe, a cancer survivor, is paying forward the gift of simple comforts that she remembers when she went through chemotherapy. “I remember getting a bag when I was going through chemo,” said Howe. “It had a notepad, a pen, lotion, antibacterial gel, it was so thoughtful. I thought ‘That’s perfect. That’s just what I needed.’ Now I’ve turned my craft room into a stockroom for comfort bags. I’ve lost track of how many I’ve done. I lost count at 60.” The items in the bags are purchased with the help of community donors. On Saturday, December 10th, Howe set out a table of comfort bags at Country Clipper Pet Grooming in Piffard and collected about $600. “The last woman I gave a bag to was so happy she cried,” said Teresa Easton, owner of Country Clipper Pet Grooming. “The people who receive these bags really appreciate it.” For Howe, December 1st marked one year since her first chemotherapy treatment. “I remember feeling so scared,” said Howe. “I was so thankful to get my bag. Now I try to bring that feeling to others.” To refer a name for a possible bag recipient email: CancerComfortBags@gmail.com Facebook - Cancer Comfort Bag Project To make a donation: Cancer Comfort Bag Project • 23 Spruce Street • Dansville, NY 14437

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

DEAR DR. ROACH: I went in for an annual examination with my primary-care doctor, and she had my blood tested at a laboratory. She told me that I have high potassium, 5.5, and had me retake it. I did, and the test came back with a much lower level of 4.3! What could have caused the level to go up so high? Was this due to eating a lot of avocado and yogurt? I was eating a whole avocado for breakfast and a yogurt with apple and peach. Should I be seeing a specialist to recheck it? Please advise what I should do. -- A.V.R. ANSWER: Avocados and yogurt are high-potassium foods, and peaches and apples are medium-potassium foods. Most people can take in high amounts of potassium without worry, since the kidney is very good at getting rid of potassium if the body doesn’t need it. I more often see low potassium levels, from poor intake or from medications, such as diuretics, which can cause the body to lose potassium. However, some people with kidney disease (especially severe kidney disease) need to carefully watch and limit oral potassium intake. By far the biggest reason for a potassium blood test to come out abnormally high relates to the lab itself. Samples that sit around a long time or that are shaken will have broken blood cells, which release high levels of potassium into the serum, causing false elevations in the lab. If you didn’t change your diet between the two tests, there is no reason to worry at all. Your primary doctor is the right person to see. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have chronic constipation, and have had this most of my life. I have used most of the bulking (husk) things that are out there. Nothing works for me. Years ago, I went to my doctor, and he said that I could use MiraLAX and use it for the rest of my life. It has worked! Now my new doctor wants me off of it, wants me to incorporate fiber into my diet. I already do this. Plus I drink a lot of water in a day. I start my day with 24 ounces of water every morning before anything else. Is there anything wrong with taking MiraLAX every day? I do not take the full dose. -- V.B. ANSWER: While I recommend non-drug treatments, such as increased water intake, high-fiber diet and exercise, as treatment for constipation, that doesn’t work for everybody. In that case, using a medication as recommended by your doctor makes sense. Polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX) is a generally safe treatment that works by increasing fluid in the bowel. It’s a good idea to use it as little as is needed to keep the stool from getting uncomfortably hard. READERS: The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. NEW WAY TO DETECT TOOTH DECAY Currently, dentists rely on x-rays and visual inspection of tooth surfaces to detect tooth decay (dental caries). As effective as these methods are in discovering cavities, they have their limitations. For one, they cannot reveal tooth decay before it is relatively advanced and x-rays cannot readily detect early cavities on biting (occlusal) surfaces. However, a technique known as “thermophotonic lock-in imaging” (TPLI) allows dentists to detect tooth decay much earlier than x-rays or visual analysis. This technology makes use of a long-wavelength infrared camera to detect the small amount of thermal infrared radiation emitted from dental caries after stimulation by a light source. It is hoped that further refinement of this tool will make cavity detection easier in the future.
With dentistry constantly evolving, it is important that your dentist stays up-to-date with the latest techniques and education to provide you with the most effective oral health care. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL does just that, providing you a wide range of advanced technologies to save you both time and money. To schedule a consultation, please call (585) 3434246. Our office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. The earliest manifestation of dental caries is a small patch of “demineralised” (softened) enamel on the tooth surface, often hidden from sight in the fissures (grooves) of teeth or in between the teeth.

Thinking about dental implants? Did you know that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth? Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements.

SHARED HABITS OF ORGANIZED PEOPLE The beginning of the year is an ideal time to get organized and set oneself up for productive months ahead. It’s also a good opportunity to take inventory of seldom-used items and clear out as much clutter as possible. The amount of stuff the average person owns can affect how easy or difficult it is for that person to get organized. In 2014, professional organizer Regina Lark estimated the average American home contains 300,000 items. And it’s not just adults who love to collect and keep things, as kids contribute to the problem, too. British research, as published in The Telegraph, indicates the average 10-year-old owns 238 toys, playing with just 12 in a typical day. All of these belongings contribute to disorganization and lost time. A study by Esure Home Insurance found looking for lost items accounts for 10 minutes of wasted time each day. Getting organized can take perseverance, but it’s possible.

Secret s t o k eeping an organized shed A w ell-organized shed can save homeow ners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of w ork gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just w hat needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. M ake a pile of anything that w ill be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of w hat you have so you know w hether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another. Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap w ood to use to make your ow n storage shelves or a w ork bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items. In order to remember w here items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the w all so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of w hich tools are missing and w hich ones need to be purchased. Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they w ill alw ays be easily accessible. You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed w all to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. M etal funnels can hold tw ine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe. M ake sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items. Roll in the law nmow er, w heelbarrow and any other cumbersome items. Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.

“A man can stand a lot as long as he can stand himself.....”
~ Axel Munthe Into every life some rain must fall. We all suffer adversities of various kinds. We can meet these misfortunes with courage and fortitude or we can grovel in self-pity and try to find an easy way out, even if it means dodging our responsibilities. Mere adversity never killed anyone. We live through it and usually, when the problem is finally resolved, it turns out to have been less awful than we imagined. We can stand a great deal if we are proud of the way we do it. Families of all faiths are assured of perfectly appropriate services when they place their trust in us. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds. When the need arises, call us first.

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Commandments: “Thou Shalt Not Steal.”
Our school’s grounds and building are in dire need of repairs. Pavement is horrible. And don’t even start on the ground next to the bus loop, or sidewalks. Shame on you voters, school board, and administration. Have more pride, I do! To the person or persons who stole my lawn mower! “Really?” You prowled around in the night like a thief. I have been taking care of my lawns for fifty years or more. I loved it. We bought this mower a few years ago, four to be exact. It had an electric start to make it easier for me. You broke my heart. Yes, I left it outside. We had a garage sale that day and the garage was full of “stuff.” Never had to worry about people stealing. You must have been at my sale, how else would you know where it was? You have put the fear into my neighbors. You are a threat to seniors. It’s called “Elder Abuse.” You probably don’t know anything about the 10
Our family lives in a local town which has a pizza shop on almost every corner. Once a week we have a take-out night of a medium cheese and pepperoni pizza and a small order of chicken wings. We go between two favorite pizza shops. How is it every week the price changes by $2-$3? Why is it when we request a splash of extra sauce on our pizza it’s an extra dollar?! Not fair! On a very recent night we picked up our order, brought it home and it was not edible. The crust was black on the bottom and the wings were dry and undercooked. We called and spoke to the manager. He would not give a refund or a credit. He said his pizza and wings were perfect. When we pay close to $30, why not just do the right thing? What happened to customer service? It’s too bad - we were good customers. To all you people who speed: 60 is the new 40 DOES NOT APPLY TO MPH (miles per hour). It is a nightmare pulling out of my driveway; please stop beeping your horn at me. If you were going the speed limit this would not be a problem. FYI the solid yellow line means NO PASSING!

Call 226-8111, 343-3111, 393-1111 or 637-5100 Pro athletes: Mind your business Pro football player Ray Lewis’ business helps the unemployed. Baltimore Ravens veteran linebacker Ray Lewis is known as much for his generous charitable efforts as he is for his devastating tackles against members of opposing offenses. So it is no surprise that he takes a social entrepreneurship approach to his for-profit ventures. “Everything that Ray does is designed to help someone,” said Dan Caporale, one of Lewis’ partners and the president of RL52 Staffing. After the economic downturn, Lewis wanted to do something to help the millions of unemployed professionals across the country. He’s been directly involved with the development of his staffing company, which places people with national and international companies. He actually helps establish partnerships with corporate executives. RL52 Staffing launched in May with overwhelming response. Employees are working to fill about 50 positions in the United States and abroad, and they’ve working with a pool of thousands of qualified applicants. “I guess you should be careful what you wish for,” said Caporale. “We almost have more on our plate than we can handle.” HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.
