What a fantastic music department at Penfield High! The wind ensemble, choral and choir, strings and symphony are outstanding; overwhelmed and thrilled with the beauty and skill of the musicians. Thank you and congratulations to 14 to 18 year olds who are the 'good guys'! You looked super in lovely gowns and tuxes! Only wish more of the audience could compliment you by dressing up a bit, too. The hours and hours put into the music presentations by hundreds of teens who choose music ...for us in the community are much appreciated. Thanks to Craig who plows my driveway; thanks to the people who keep our roads clear, to the people who deliver the mail & the newspapers; and thanks to those
who deliver our Penny Saver! Monday I had to put air in my tires. I always go to BJ's in Webster. Well I was on my last tire and I was taking off the cap on the tire and I hear a snap and all the air comes rushing out of my tire. I just stood there and didn't know why or what to do. Thank God for the kind gentleman in the cashier’s booth at the gas station at BJ's who came running over to tell me I broke the sensor off and he would get me help from the auto dept. in BJ's. Within 5 minutes another kind gentlemen came over with tools to change my tire and put the spare one on. I asked him what I owed and he said "Merry Christmas." I didn't get the names of either men but I just wanted to say thank you so very much to both of you for your

On 9/13/17 I had picked my child up from an area high school and quickly turned around in the driveway across from the school to pick up another student who also needed a ride. I completely turned my car around so that I wouldn't have to back out of the driveway with so much school traffic and children walking. After picking up this second student I was flagged down by a car so I put my window down. The homeowner got into his car and chased me so that he could scream, point his finger and belligerently remind me that I am never to use his driveway again. Because you chased me down and scared me, I did report your

The staff of Lifespan's Ombudsman program extends a heartfelt "thank you" to the 80+ volunteer Ombudsmen who faithfully advocate for more than 12,000 older adults living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities throughout Monroe, Livingston, Genesee, Orleans, Wyoming, Ontario, Wayne, Seneca, and Yates Counties. forwarded my concerns to the county. I'm sorry it resorted to this, but I am tired of asking you to pick up an occasional box that you shouldn't have left behind and having to call you. It’s frustrating.
How hard is it for this garbage company to pick up a box and throw it away? I've constantly had to call them and they keep on sending someone to pick it up. I have better things to do than to constantly call up this company to pick up something they should've done in the first place. It’s getting old. One lousy box and it’s Tuesday and I called Saturday. We pay for this service in our taxes. Please don't make this difficult for me. I don't want to have to call you up almost on a regular basis. I've contacted the town; they've
I recently phoned [local provider] about a $1.99 extra charge on my bill. I was told it would cost me $5.00 to talk with a live person! I should go online to find out. What do you do if you don't have a computer or are 85 and have a problem using the internet? I find that outrageous!! [Local Town] is being turned into one big junkyard. A once nice restaurant has a view south of a junkyard. The old diner and adjacent properties have turned a once nice area into a slum. Can't something be done?

Side effects of snoring include higher risk for Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and
HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12 years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called betaamyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

5th Grade Runner Earns All-American Status at Nationals By Karin Fetzner St. Agnes School 5th grade student Catherine Staley competed in the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross-Country Championships 3K race on December 9th in Tallahassee, Florida placing 12th out of a field of 323 runners in the age 9-10 bracket which puts her in the top 4% of runners in the country in her age group. Catherine improved her ranking in the nation this year by 12 places improving on her 24th place finish last year. The race was conducted under cold and damp conditions with temps only in the 40s and the rainfall from the previous day left the field soggy and muddy but Catherine put in a time of 11:25 earning the status of an All-American Runner. “My goal going into the race was to be in the top 25,” reflected Staley after the race. “I was so happy when I was done and made it. I didn’t know I could go that fast!” Earlier this season, Catherine won the women’s division of the Geneseo Trio. Her overall trio time of 1:00:01 was recognized as a new Women’s Trio record. Catherine was the top female finisher in the Oak Tree 5k with a time of 20 minutes - good for 10th overall. In the Friday Knight 5k, her time was 20 minutes, 9 seconds and she
finished the Ramon Rocha 5k in 19 minutes, 51 seconds, which placed her third overall in the race. This was the second consecutive “Fastest Female” Trio title for Catherine, who ran the races 81 seconds faster than last year. She also finished as the second overall “Fastest Female” in the 2015 Trio races. Catherine also won the St. Agnes School Race to Educate 5K this past September.
Congratulations, Catherine!

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy BAD BREATH AND BEYOND The smell of a person’s breath can be indicative of a number of health conditions. For instance, breath that smells like “acetone” (nail polish remover) may be a sign that a diabetic is not managing his or her blood sugar well. In such cases, the body does not receive enough insulin to break down glucose in the blood. When the body cannot get its energy from sugar, it switches to burning fat for fuel instead. The process of breaking down fat to use as energy releases by-products called “ketones,” including acetone. If ketone levels rise too high, the blood can become acidic and affect how other organs in the body function. Recognizing ketone breath may help avert a serious problem. As part of your healthcare team, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is
concerned about all aspects of your health. If a medical condition comes to our attention during a dental exam, you can be sure we will discuss the issues with you as well as any other healthcare provider if you choose. We bring you our dental column as a way to inform our friends and neighbors here in Batavia of the many benefits of professional dentistry. For gentle dental care for the family, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most dental insurances. P.S. Breath analysis may help identify “prediabetes” when diabetes is in its early stage.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know if you have ever heard of a person being allergic to psyllium fiber? My doctor suggested I take Metamucil for constipation, as opposed to stool softeners. However, when I took it, my face and eyes began to itch, I began to wheeze and I coughed until I vomited it up. My doctor stated he had never heard of anyone being allergic to it. As a side note, my husband has used Metamucil for years, and I have had a couple of episodes of wheezing and shortness of breath that could be attributed to inhaling some of the powder when he mixed it. -P.G. ANSWER: I haven’t seen any cases either, but it can happen, rarely -- most often to people who have allergies to grasses or dust. It is possible that inhaling some of the powder started the allergy. I would be careful to stay away from the area where your husband is mixing his, as allergies sometimes worsen over time. Unfortunately, you will have to find another source for fiber. Good dietary sources include wheat bran, prunes and prune juice. If you need a supplement, you may try methylcellulose (such as Citrucel), wheat dextrin (like Benefiber), and calcium polycarbophil (Fibercon). Be sure to get enough fluid, and start with a low dose and then slowly increase. The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$5 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is 86 years old and in generally good health. He has been falling for no apparent reason for the past three years. He has had MRIs and X-rays, been to neurologists and ENTs -no one has an explanation. He has walkers and an electric wheelchair, but there are times when he has to stand and/or walk a little. My parents’ apartment looks like a war zone. Almost all of the furniture has been broken, not to mention the cuts and bruises on my dad. Is there anything you can think of that might cause this? -- J.G. ANSWER: If multiple doctors haven’t helped with the benefit of a complete history, exam and labs, I’m not likely to. However, vitamin D supplements have been shown to improve strength and reduce falls in the large number of people who have low levels. There are two ways to find out. You either can have the vitamin D level checked by a doctor, and use vitamin D if it is low; or, you can try a daily dose of vitamin D for a month or so and see if it helps. Most authorities recommend 400-800 IU daily. Personally, I have found that 1,000-2,000 IU often is needed. This dose is unlikely to do harm if taken for only a month trial, and may be necessary for those whose levels are deficient and have symptoms. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. © 2017 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Drive with care everyday Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside. Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation. Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components. Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped. AUTO SECTION

Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs. Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber. When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump. Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

W ITH HELP FROM CHILE, BLUEBERRIES STAY FRESH ALL W INTER They’re delicious, nutritious and versatile. They’re naturally fatfree, high in vitamin C and a rich source of antioxidants. Americans love them in c ereals, salads, sauces and as toppings and by the handful, but w hen w inter comes around, many people assume fresh blueberry season is over. Not so fast. W hen the snow flies in M inneapolis, things are just heating up in places like Chile. Thanks to a robust South American fruit industry, fresh blueberries now maintain their favored position in North American produce aisles, culinary creations, and home kitchens all year long. The popularity of blueberries has soared in recent years, driven by their impressive nutritional resume. One half-c up of blueberries c ontains just 42 c alories and helps meet the recommended 5 to 9 servings a day of c olorful fruits and vegetables. The “ Little Blue Dynamos” pac k in fiber, potassium, Vitamin C and more cancer-fighting antioxidants than either w ine or green tea. Recent studies also show that fresh blueberries can help keep skin looking younger; help prevent dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease; and serve as a natural anti-inflammatory. Helping the cause significantly is that most people consider fresh blueberries a treat, including children w ho remain blissfully unaw are of the health benefits. Fresh blueberries are easily enjoyed as a grab-and-go snack, but there are other sw eet and savory w ays to beat the w inter blues w ith this superfood.

Many people make losing weight and/or getting fit their New Year’s resolutions, and the dawn of a new calendar year is often a great time to find discounts on gym memberships. According to Consumer Reports, many gyms and fitness centers, recognizing the desire people have to start the year off on a healthy foot, will greatly discount the cost of memberships in January. But signing up for a discounted gym membership on the morning of January 1 is not the only way to save money and still get fit. Prospective members willing to commit to 12-month memberships may be able to get a gym with costly initiation fees to waive that fee. In addition, e-commerce businesses like Groupon® and LivingSocial may also offer discounted memberships to area gyms through their websites. Fitness-minded people may also be eligible for health club rebates through their health insurance plans. In such instances, health insurance providers may reward policy holders who visit the gym a predetermined number of times in a specific time frame (i.e., 50 visits in six months) with rebates. Such rebates can save club members several hundred dollars per year, greatly reducing the overall cost of their gym memberships.

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Add insulation. M any older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater.

But w hat homeow ner relishes the thought of climbing a ladder to check the health of his roof -- as key to a home’s energy efficiency as that roof might be -w hen the w eather is turning sharply colder outside? Well, as it turns out, w hile even a quic k, eyeball roof-c hec k is recommended this time of year, there’s a fallback option. You could just check your attic instead. “ Roofs ac tually c reate an insulated barrier that helps trap heat inside, and most attic spaces are located right below them,” explains Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advanc ement of Roofing Excellence. “ That makes them perfect for spotting potential problem areas and damage w ithout w orrying about falling.”

Bontrager’s Auction Center 8975 Wortendyke Road, Batavia, NY 14020 Auction Center Office 585-343-4529 www.bontragerauction.com HOST A SPORTS VIEWING PARTY TO REMEMBER Hundreds of millions of people across the globe enjoy sports, and many are fond of gathering with fellow fans to watch their favorite teams play, whether in-person or on television. Viewing parties are a great way to watch the big game with fellow fans, and such gatherings don’t have to require all that much effort on the part of hosts. Make it a potluck affair. Potluck affairs make perfect sense for sports viewing parties, so don’t be surprised if guests offer to whip up some homemade guacamole or a buffet-style dish for the big party. Encourage this, asking guests to share what they’re bringing with other invitees so there are no duplicate offerings. Vary the food and beverage menu. Chicken wings and beer might seem like go-to foods and beverages for the big game, but even sports bars are increasingly recognizing sports fans’ desire for healthy foods. It’s still acceptable to serve staples like wings, nachos, chips, and pretzels, but try to provide some healthy fare like celery and salad as well. Even wholegrain pretzels might be more enticing to guests watching what they eat. In addition, provide alternatives to alcohol, such as water, soda and juice, for guests who are abstaining. Upgrade your television. Projection screens are go-to options for many avid sports fans, But projectors and screens may stretch some sports fans’ budgets. A 4K ultra-HD television can be an affordable option depending on the size of the television, and such devices provide incredibly crisp pictures that can make sports fans feel as though they’re inside the stadium cheering on their favorite players. Purchase a sound system. Today’s televisions are sleek and thin. While that saves space and provides more aesthetic appeal than the bulky televisions of yesteryear, thin designs leave little room for sound tech. As a result, it can be hard to hear what’s going on in the game without a sound system. Sound systems are relatively inexpensive; just make sure to purchase one that is compatible with your television. Sports viewing parties tend to be easygoing affairs that don’t require the level of planning of more formal gatherings.

Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

Based on an analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey conducted by GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com, a typical business would save $11,000 per person per year if it allowed its employees to work from home just half the time.
