HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Arian penchant for impatience shows, as you consider passing a problemprone project on to someone else. Best advice: Stay with it and work out those snarls yourself. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Even patient Bovines can be frustrated when carefully made plans go awry. But crank up that “stick-to-it-ivity” you do so well, and you’ll soon find that your schedule is back in sync. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your aspect favors using more resourceful means in dealing with a workplace situation. Some discreet checking around could help shed light on the root cause of the problem. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You show an unusually strong streak of stubbornness in rejecting suggestions from friends and/or family members early in the week. But you become more receptive by the week’s end. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat might find a gentler approach more effective when dealing with those who resist needed changes. Remember, the word “persuasion” starts with the sound “purr.” VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A disappointing experience with someone you felt you could trust can be painful. But there just might be more to this situation than you’re aware of. Press for an explanation. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Changing your views about something you believe in isn’t easy. But you might reconsider as the facts come in. Keep your mind open, even if you’re uneasy about what you might learn. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to do some serious shifting of gears to get your project back on track. But cheer up. Your hard work starts to produce some positive results by the week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unsettling mood at the start of the week soon lifts and gives way to a more positive attitude as you find fun and friendship beginning to dominate your aspect. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A delay in firming up holiday plans could work to your advantage. Use this time to scout out possibilities that might be more in line with what those close to you would prefer. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Some people might question some of the new friends you’ve welcomed into your life. But your ability to see beyond the obvious helps you recognize how special they are. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial matters can be especially tricky this week. It’s best to follow a conservative investment path for now, and wait for a more fortuitous time to take a bolder approach. BORN THIS WEEK: Your warmth, your humor and your genuine concern for others make you someone people love to keep close to their lives. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.

8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Enjoy dining out w it h k ids Practice : Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “ Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time. Parents also can acclimate their youngsters to dining out by gradually w orking their w ay up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place w here table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant w hen kids can handle it.

The Scottsville Fire Department brought out a fire truck and handed out treats for Halloween in Scottsville. I can't thank the Department enough for their generosity and the time spent volunteering within our community. They made the smiles of children in Scottsville even bigger! I hope this will be annual event! Thanks to the Bank St. Elder Center! You guys are wonderful. Kept me active all spring to fall. Got a chance to meet new people and laugh. Keep up the good work. To the person complaining about the screaming toddler, stop to consider one of several things. Perhaps the child was ill, which is why (s)he was crying, and they were waiting that long in the store for a prescription? No, I am not this child's mother, but I have been in that position before! Also, you complain that she should teach her child how to behave, but did you ever stop to think that was exactly what she was doing? Yes, it's very inconvenient & irritating to hear a toddler scream. But by not giving in to

me at checkout put all my groceries out of the cart for me. It was so kind of her! Thank you, Sweet Lady! I have voted in suburban Western New York, Buffalo and Rochester areas, for over 30 years. The election workers have always been helpful and efficient and the polling places convenient and welcoming. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes to vote. The ballots are easy to understand and machines in good working order. I've always been confident my vote is properly counted. You read of hours long waits and malfunctioning machines in other parts of the country. Not

Now if only I could convert those voters that don't agree with me! Thank you to all who helped me the evening before Thanksgiving in Livonia. I had taken a nasty fall on a sidewalk. The next I went back and they told me they reviewed the video and the scratch was there when I entered the wash. They do not have a camera at the end of the wash, only at the beginning. These rights stop when you deposit this waste on the public roads, it stops when you obliterate the public roads with mud and stones tracked from your fields, it stops when your Round-up or similar leaves your property and kills vegetation belonging to others. Your right to farm stops when overloaded or over height equipment damages roads or pulls down wires, your right stops when this highly concentrated, high volume bio hazardous waste you call manure leaves your property thru run-off, wind or underground migration. Far from the crushing crowds and constant rushing commotion that has become par for the course each holiday season, the Village of Brockport invites you to relax and enjoy the season while shortening your gift list at the same time! The businesses of Downtown Brockport have come together to offer guests a Holiday Passport to Downtown Brockport Shopping from Friday, November 30th through Sunday, December 9th. Passport holders will also be privy to the many free and discounted offers and special store promotions available at the several businesses they visit. Over 25 area merchants will be participating in this fun and festive Walk About experience. Here’s how it works. Guests pick up their passports at Lightways, Lift Bridge, Smartypants & participating merchants. Included in this passport will be a list of participating businesses. As you stroll through the village checking out local businesses, each location you visit will stamp your passport. For every stamp you receive, you will also get an entry ticket into our gift basket raffle. Winners will be decided on Monday, December 9th and will be notified via the cell phone number they provided, either by phone call or text message. Contributing local businesses, listed inside the passports, have put together beautiful, fun gift baskets full of treats and festive delights. Holiday Passport participants could win one or more gift baskets in Monday’s drawing and are encouraged to get as many merchant

stamps, and therefore ticket entries into the drawing, as possible. In addition to enjoying Downtown Brockport, your purchases will support this beautiful community. Shopping local directs more money back into your local economy, up to 2.5 times more by some statistics. It generates more local jobs and general local activity, as well. Shopping local connects you with the various experts in your area as well as often exposing you to a greater diversity of products. It increases the chances that you will meet and talk with more of your fellow community members, which in turn, may increase community involvement. Finally, shopping local reduces the amount of international shipping and transport involved, and therefore, it also reduces processing, packaging and transportation waste, leading to a decrease in pollution from these sources. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to support your community and have a fun, relaxing holiday shopping experience, all while earning chances to win these spectacular gift baskets.

Finding work after 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. • Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Think Fall Prevention!! When it comes to fall prevention, here are a few tips to think about for you, or an aged loved one. Move or remove furniture to provide a wide walk space. Often, especially those using walkers, catch the corners of furniture and fall. Double sided tape is great to hold down carpets that are buckled or rolled up on the edge. It even prevents area rugs from sliding on hard floor surfaces. Shoes, boots, newspapers, books and other clutter can be a real trip or slip hazard, especially for those who move a little more stiffly. Keep these picked up or set aside. Tape cords and wires down or tack them against the wall. Never run them across doorways. Better yet, hire an electrician to add an outlet or two in a room. Keep the most used things in your kitchen in spaces that are easy to access. If you do use a step stool, buy one with a bar so you can hold on to it. Chairs are not step stools! Keep a lamp and flashlight next to your bed. Use them if you have to get up at night. Keep pathway to the bathroom free of clutter.

Don’t leave objects on the stairs. Fix loose or uneven steps. Improve lighting or be sure light bulbs are working. Handrails should be in place and securely installed. Use non-slip mats or self-stick strips in tubs and showers and install secure handrails. Rugs need to be non-slip rubber backed. Exercise - yes, exercise. Study after study proves that if you exercise even a little to keep strength in leg muscles and good core tone, you can often prevent a fall or recover yourself from a fall. Check your health insurance. You may qualify for a free or inexpensive exercise program. Call your local Office for the Aging to learn about programs in your area. We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy SMILE MAKEOVER One cosmetic factor to consider when planning a smile makeover is the “smile line,” which follows the edges of the upper teeth from side to side. It should mimic the curve of the lower lip when smiling. This imaginary line serves as a point of reference that helps determine how long a patient’s teeth should be. Since longer teeth lend a youthful appearance to a smile, shorter front teeth may be lengthened through bonding, porcelain veneers, or recontouring. These same procedures may also be utilized to correct or modify chipped teeth and/or fill in gaps between teeth. To lengthen the appearance of teeth to avoid a “gummy smile,” a laser may be used to modify the gum line. Whether you are in our office for a smile makeover or just for a simple cleaning, our personal,

casual, and relaxed style in providing quality dental care will help put you at ease. We’ll take the time to get to know your needs, answer your questions about the latest techniques and materials, and make sure that you are comfortable. Find out just how pleasant a visit to the dentist and enhancing your smile can be – call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246. Complete family dental care is available at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Replacing missing teeth is an integral part of a smile makeover that not only makes a smile far more attractive, but also reduces the risk of malocclusion (“bad bite”), tooth decay, and shrunken jaw bones that lead to a collapsed bite.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am writing about platelet donations. As a way of giving back, I donate platelets. I was wondering if there is a time that a person should stop donating, based on age or difficulty. I am 61 years old, and the past three times I’ve donated, I felt uncomfortable in some way. Either my arm or wrist hurt, or I had a feeling of malaise during the donating process. One time, I was told that my platelet count was on the low side, but it was not any danger to my well-being. I feel well immediately afterward and do not have health issues, so my concern is whether this is somehow detrimental to my own health as I age. -- S.B. ANSWER: Platelet donation generally is a very well-tolerated procedure. The platelets are removed from the donor’s blood via a process called apheresis; a centrifuge separates the blood into four components: plasma (containing proteins), platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells. For platelet donors, just the platelets are removed, and the rest of the blood components are returned to the donor. In order to keep the blood from clotting inside the machine, sodium citrate is added to the apheresis machine. This reduces the calcium, which is needed for blood clotting. However, some people can develop symptoms of low calcium during the apheresis. This can be treated by slowing the rate of donation, or by taking some oral calcium before donating. More-severe cases might require giving intravenous calcium to the patient via another IV catheter. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that people make no more than 24 donations per year, but there is good evidence that platelet donation is safe. I congratulate you on being a communityminded citizen, and I can reassure you that you have very little short-term risk and essentially zero long-term risk from donating platelets, whatever your age. Donate as often as is comfortable, and try taking a calcium supplement before donating. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have taken 5 mg zolpidem (Ambien) nightly for about three years. My doctor seems to think this is acceptable. I sleep five to six hours with this aid and function normally in the morning. Recently I was told that this drug has a cumulative effect on the body. Would you verify this? Over-thecounter sleep aids have no effect, and this drug seems to be the only way I can sleep. -- D.M. ANSWER: Zolpidem and its cousins, eszopiclone (Lunesta) and zaleplon (Sonata), work for a relatively short time in the body before they are metabolized, so they do not build up in the body. They are mostly gone in the morning, and grogginess is not a problem for most people. However, people often develop a dependence on these medications; it becomes difficult to sleep without them. More importantly, they do increase the risk of falls and auto accidents, especially when used every day and in people over 65. I don’t recommend them for the long term, and I have referred my patients who can’t sleep without them to a sleep specialist, who sometimes (but not always) is able to find a better solution than daily Ambien. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

Long nails can be painful for dogs. The experts in holistic care at Dogs Naturally Magazine say that long nails that will come in contact with hard ground can push back up into the nail bed and cause discomfort. Long nails also may cause the toes to twist. Most dogs require their nails be trimmed every two weeks. This time period may be extended if the dog goes for long walks frequently.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.
