SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

What is a silent stroke? The brain is a complex organ responsible for controlling many different bodily functions. When working at optimal capacity, the brain is a wonder to behold. When illness or trauma affects the brain, various parts of the body may not work as they should. One of the more devastating things that can affect the brain is stroke. Stroke describes a sudden stoppage of blood from reaching the brain. Harvard Medical School states that if a large number of brain cells are starved of blood supply, they can die. With their demise, a person’s memory and ability to speak and move can be compromised. While many strokes come on suddenly, certain factors may indicate a person is at risk. Such factors may include prior heart attacks, genetics, high blood pressure, smoking, or a prior stroke. However, in a particular type of stroke - a “silent stroke” - symptoms are far more subtle and difficult to spot. Silent cerebral infarction, often referred to as “SCI” or “silent stroke,” is a brain injury likely caused by a blood clot interrupting blood flow to the brain, offers the American Stroke Association. Silent strokes increase risk for other strokes and can be a sign of progressive brain damage. A silent stroke is typically only noticed as a side component of an MRI of the brain. Many times patients do not recall having a stroke and never felt any symptoms. Silent strokes should not be mistaken for mini-strokes. Mini-stroke is a brief but discrete and memorable event, with symptoms appearing for a few minutes or a few hours. According to a study on silent stroke titled “Functional and Cognitive Consequences of Silent Stroke Discovered Using Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging in an Elderly Population” and published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society, silent strokes are quite common and can have serious consequences. Researchers have found that silent stroke is associated with impairments in tests of cognitive function rather than movement-oriented performance tests like rising from a chair. Almost 50 percent of studied silent

strokes affected frontal circuit components of the brain, such as the frontal cortex, basal ganglia and thalamus. Lesions in these brain structures compromised executive functions and were related to vascular dementia. Another study showed associations between silent stroke and visual field deficits, weakness in walking on heels, history of memory loss, migraines, and lower scores in cognitive function tests. The “silent” part of a silent stroke also refers to the areas of the brain that the stroke affects. Experts at Harvard Medical School explain that, during a silent stroke, an interruption in blood flow destroys areas of cells in a part of the brain that is “silent,” meaning that it doesn’t control any vital functions. Researchers say that, over time, the damage from silent strokes can accumulate, leading to more and more problems with memory. Collectively, silent strokes become silent no longer. There are certain ways to reduce the risk of any type of stroke. These include: · managing high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels · quitting smoking · reducing the risk of diabetes and effectively treat the condition if it is present · losing weight to prevent obesity · exercising and avoid a sedentary lifestyle · taking a low-dose aspirin or a drug that prevents blood clots. Silent strokes largely go unrecognized but can lead to significant brain injury. Getting the facts can help men and women reduce their risk for silent stroke.

Safety measures can help reduce bathroom injuries Nonslip mats: Bathroom injuries often occur w hen people are getting in and out of the show er. Having a non-slip mat on the inside of the show er or tub as w ell as one w ith a grippable surface and plush top layer on w hich to step after exiting the show er can reduce falls. Don’t step out of the show er onto a flimsy tow el that can slip out from underneath your feet.

Little-known Facts About Abraham Lincoln In honor of Lincoln’s birthday, here are 13 facts about the man. 1. Towering over others at a height of 6 feet 4 inches tall, Lincoln remains the tallest president to hold office. It is likely his stature helped to present an air of authority during his presidency. 2. Lincoln had two romantic interests before he married Mary Todd in 1842. Lincoln was in a relationship with Ann Rutledge, who died of typhoid fever. He also courted Mary Owens for some time before they ended their relationship. 3. Lincoln was notoriously messy. His law office was often cluttered, much to the chagrin of his partner William Herndon. It is said Lincoln kept an envelope on his desk marked, “When you can’t find it anywhere else, look into this.” 4. Lincoln was the first president to be photographed at his inauguration. His future assassin, John Wilkes Booth, can be seen in a photo standing close to the president. 5. In 1849, Lincoln obtained Patent No. 6,469 for a device that was designed to lift and keep boats afloat when they passed over a sandbar or entered shallow water. Lincoln served as a ferry operator and flatboat pilot prior to entering politics. 6. Lincoln took his dreams seriously and was purported to be interested in psychic research and activities. Before his election to the presidency, Lincoln said he was startled by a vision of a double image of himself. The second image was pale, according to accounts. His wife was led to believe the vision meant Lincoln would be elected to two terms as president and die during the second. 7. Lincoln’s beard is almost as famous as the man. He was urged by advisors to grow a beard during his first term to soften some of his harsh features. 8. Lincoln was born to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks. Actor Tom Hanks is a distant relative of the former president. 9. Despite his stature, Lincoln apparently had a high-pitched voice and not a deep timbre. 10. Lincoln wore a size 14 shoe. 11. According to reports by his personal secretary John Hay, Lincoln would sometimes pace the White House because of insomnia. He would keep Hay up with funny stories or with readings of Shakespeare. 12. Lincoln accepted a challenge to a duel with James Shields, a state auditor. Lincoln chose a broadsword as the weapon, but Shields decided to work through his differences with Lincoln amicably rather than face him in the duel. 13. The contents of Lincoln’s pockets on the night he was killed were not revealed until February 12, 1976.

Fairport-Perinton Chamber Networks with Monthly Coffee By Diane McClure Networking is a social process to make businesses and professionals visible. When creativity is added, participants become enthusiastic! Have you heard of a progressive party being brought into the business world? The Fairport-Perinton Chamber members have had this experience. Chamber President Paul West stated, “Our Chamber hosts a monthly informal coffee. The venue changes monthly, as we move around to support our local business members and to acquaint professionals doing business in Fairport, Perinton, Egypt, and Bushnell’s Basin with one another and local business resources.” Ellen Reynolds, Chamber Events Chair added, “These monthly coffees also provide the opportunity for non-members to attend, as well as members, to check out the Chamber experience.” Member Ashby Tax & Consulting, LLC, of 1157 Fairport Road, thought that their office building would be of interest to the Coffee attendees, so they hosted an event, allowing attendees to personally experience what makes a building “green,” through a progressive breakfast. Ashby Tax & Consulting created Chamber member enthusiasm! The Chamber experienced record attendance at their progressive breakfast event. The attendees toured the office building, meeting business neighbors and hearing their stories of benefits from working in a “green” office building. Chamber member Ramona Stein, owner of Sounds for Life, stated, “It was a great event and very well attended! I enjoyed connecting with so many members in one setting and it was a great opportunity to learn†about all of the businesses that operate under one roof. The building story dates back to 1956. Cosmo Viola started a tradition of quality building standards in the Rochester, New York area. His vision for new and innovative ideas allowed him to build what most people thought could not be accomplished. His pride and success have been carried down through his entire family. Cosmo built the Perinton Professional Building, 1157 Fairport Road, in 1966. It was a state-of-the art building at the time. One of his sons, Daniel Viola, President of Viola Homes and Renewable Rochester, continues with his father’s vision. Dan believes in being a true craftsman, so when it was time to renovate this

Enjoying the progressive breakfast event at Ashby Tax & Consulting. office building, he wanted to make it the first “green” building in Fairport. The lumber was recycled from the old building, the original slate floor his father laid still remains and solar panels were installed from solar contractor, Renewable Rochester. Dan is a LEED AP, who in collaboration with Viola Storage, has designed and project managed new home construction and commercial building development. The six tenants in the “green” Perinton Professional Building include: Dentist, M.S. Mayer, DMD; Eyes on Rochester; Ashby Tax & Consulting; Fairport Chiropractic; R.W. Lloyd Financial; Upstate Alarm. Donna Favitta, Operations Manager at Ashby Tax & Consulting stated, “Our ability to connect with small businesses through the Chamber has provided a great opportunity for networking and referrals. We are delighted to start our 2nd year as a Chamber member. The services provided by the Chamber are cutting edge and most helpful to small businesses. Ashby Tax & Consulting highly recommends active participation in the Chamber, if you have business interests in Fairport, Perinton, Egypt, or Bushnell’s Basin.” Whether you are a member or just an interested party, plan to attend upcoming Chamber events, where business networking is fun! DID YOU KNOW? According to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, steer wrestling is the quickest event in professional rodeo. Steer wrestlers combine physical strength with technique to wrestle steer, which typically weigh more than twice as much as the wrestler, to the ground as quickly as possible. Steer wrestlers are often referred to as “bulldoggers” and begin each competition on horseback in a box. When the event begins, the steer is released and gets a head start, the length of which is determined by the size of the arena. Once the steer reaches the predetermined advantage point, the bulldogger is released and takes off in pursuit. Once the bulldogger reaches the steer, he slides off of his galloping horse and hooks his right arm around the steer’s right horn while grabbing the left horn with his left hand. The bulldogger then uses his physical strength and the leverage of his position to slow the steer and wrestle it to the ground. The bulldogger’s efforts to corral the steer are aided by a person riding horseback on the opposite side of the steer. This person is referred to as a hazer and is there to prevent the steer from veering away from the bulldogger. Once the bulldogger has wrestled the steer to the ground, he must then make sure the steer is on its side and all four of its feet are pointing in the same direction. Only then is the event considered over.

Secret s t o k eeping an organized shed A w ell-organized shed can save homeow ners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of w ork gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just w hat needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. M ake a pile of anything that w ill be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of w hat you have so you know w hether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another. Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap w ood to use to make your ow n storage shelves or a w ork bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items. In order to remember w here items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the w all so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of w hich tools are missing and w hich ones need to be purchased. Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they w ill alw ays be easily accessible. You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed w all to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. M etal funnels can hold tw ine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe. M ake sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items. Roll in the law nmow er, w heelbarrow and any other cumbersome items. Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.

VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD Considered to be one of the most romantic countries in the world, France can be an ideal place to participate in Valentine’s Day traditions. The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Single men and women of all ages once entered houses that faced one another and took turns calling out to one another to find romantic matches. The men could refuse the match and leave the woman looking for another man to call on. Women who were not paired up would light a bonfire and damn the men who rejected them. The French government eventually banned the practice because of rowdy crowds.

DID YOU KNOW? Wyoming was not only the first state to grant women the right to vote, but it also was the first state to elect a female governor, electing Nellie Tayloe Ross to that post in 1924. Ross was elected after being nominated for governor in a special election following the sudden death of her husband, William Ross, who died from complications of an appendectomy less than two years into his term. Wyoming granted full voting rights to women in 1869, 21 years before it was even granted statehood. The year 1869 proved to be a groundbreaking year with regard to voting rights, as it was in February of 1869 that Congress proposed an amendment that would ban voting restrictions on the basis of race, color or previous servitude. That amendment would not be ratified for nearly 12 months, but it would still precede the 19th Amendment, which granted American women the right to vote, by half a century. Among those credited with fighting hard for women’s suffrage in the United States are Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott and Susan B. Anthony, none of whom would ultimately live long enough to see the 19th Amendment passed.

M any elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars runn ing smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentiall y dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.

During the week of Christmas we received a surprise in the mail! A Christmas card from Valley Fuel Company that included a note “A gift of $$ has been applied to your account by an anonymous donor.” We would like to send a big thank you out to the anonymous donor! It is good to know there are so many wonderful people in our world. Dick & Yvonne Struble I would like to thank everyone who helped in any way when my grandson Kyle Halstead was in an accident. Thanks to all your prayers, he is home now and doing better every day. I can never express how much gratitude I feel, even for kind words spoken. Our lives will never be the same and it gives me great solace to know there are so many kindhearted and caring people. It is a miracle that he is still alive. From the man who first found him, the EMT’s who kept him

alive, all the doctors, nurses, therapists and so many prayers from people everywhere. God bless you all. The greatest gift is life itself. Kyle’s Grandma Onolee Thank you to the Avon Central School District Staff and Community members, especially East Avon Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, who made this year’s Christmas program so successful! We delivered gifts to over 30 children and their families. It is amazing to be connected to a special place like Avon that cares so deeply for the wellbeing of the community. It is with great optimism and joy to know that a community can band together for the greater good and be a special light to many children and families who are struggling. Thank you for all you do and Happy New Year! (-On behalf of many children and their families) You are always there when and if we need you. Thank you especially to Dispatcher Amanda Schultz and Deputy Moran. My mother’s vehicle was hit while she was parked at her apartment and Dispatcher Shultz sent Deputy Moran to take the report. My mother and I thank you greatly. Aprile and her Mom Linda

God. I suppose kisses under mistletoe at Christmas time is blasphemy in your eyes too?

Recently I went to a local liquor store to buy a certain bottle of wine. The clerk began a rant - insignificant wine from a minor winery, etc. After a few minutes of this rudeness I left. There was another local liquor store where the lady said, Oh I’m sorry we don’t carry that but I can try to get it for you. Guess where I’ll go next time?! I’ve been going to the Lima Save-A-Lot for many years, and will be sorry to see them go. To the reader who posted the article about smashing wedding cake in each other’s face...are you that prudish to even write that? First of all it’s not a “relatively new” custom. I am in my 50’s and I’ve seen this at almost every wedding I’ve been to as far back as I can remember. Cheer up and have a little fun. Smashing a little cake in the face of your new bride/groom is NOT breaking a solemn vow in the eyes of

On my way to work I am caught behind the same bus waiting for two children coming from the same house. The bus stops at the same time each day, 6:40 am. Most days the children are not waiting at the end of the driveway, which is longer than a football field and a half from their door to their stop. As soon as they open the door the bus driver puts his flashers on. Then the children walk down their long driveway, which holds all traffic up for at least 5-8 minutes each morning. Kids (and parents) have your children at the bus stop on time! Drivers of all busses, if the kids are not at their stop at the designated time then drive on. The next time you’re in a grocery store checkout line and you’re asked if you’d like to donate to feed the hungry, please don’t say “no thank you”. You’re not being offered something especially for you. You’re being asked to feed hungry children in and around the community. Say “not at this time” or simply “no”. No thank you? Come on.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Purchasing used items may be good for the wallet, but such purchases also can benefit the environment. Used items go on sale every day, whether they’re preowned cars or used clothing. Saving items from landfills prematurely reduces the number of new things that need to be manufactured, saving energy as well as money. There are so many ways to make the most of used merchandise and find the things you need. Some ways men and women concerned about the environment can look to preowned items to benefit the planet and their pocketbooks include organizing a tag sale and scanning local advertisements.

HOME-STYLE BAKED CHICKEN Serves 4 to 6 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 11⁄2 teaspoons Poultry Seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 ⁄4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1 ⁄2 teaspoon paprika 4 to 5 pounds skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs and drumsticks Preheat the oven and a 9-by-13inch metal roasting pan to 375ºF. Place the olive oil and butter in the pan and place the pan in the oven on the lower rack. In a small bowl, combine the poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Set aside. Place the flour in a resealable bag. Place a few pieces of the chicken in the flour at a time, seal, and shake to coat. Remove and vigorously shake off any excess flour. Place the flour-dusted chicken on a clean platter. Repeat with the remaining chicken pieces. Remove the roasting pan from the oven and immediately arrange the chicken skin-side up in a single layer over the bottom of the pan and then sprinkle with some of the poultry seasoning blend and paprika. It should sizzle. Place the hot pan back on the lower rack of the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Remove, baste by spooning the juices that have collected in the pan over each piece, and then sprinkle the chicken with the remaining poultry seasoning blend. Return the pan to the oven and bake for 20 minutes more. Remove and baste one last time before moving the chicken to the middle rack and baking for 10 to 15 minutes more to further crisp the chicken skin. Let rest for 5 to 8 minutes before serving.

Have you lost your

local insurance agency? BATAVIA - Has your local insurance company gone out of business or been sold to a larger company? Or do you feel like your current rates are higher than they should be? No matter the reason, when you’re looking for a new insurance agency, the advantages to staying with a small, local agency are hard to argue against. In the world of insurance, customer service is very important. When dealing with a smaller local agency, customers can walk into the office or call and ask for their agent by name. With larger companies, that’s not always possible, and if they are not local – good luck. Good customer service is a huge reason why households and drivers sign up with a local agency over a large national chain. Accountability is another reason. Because customers of smaller insurance agencies know who they’re talking to, there’s more accountability, which is also critical for insurance agreements. An insurance policy rests on that accountability, because the customers are paying toward the day when a claim needs to be made. Submitting a claim is a far more comfortable experience when you’re dealing with someone you know and trust. Because it is true that the process of submitting a claim can be intimidating and if it’s the situation of a car accident it can be exacerbated by injuries that can make it even worse. Particularly with a stranger or unfamiliar person. Having a concrete agreement with a local shop is one of the best ways to get peace of mind regarding your insurance.

UNPLUG FROM DEVICES Many people now spend ample time each day texting, posting to social media and watching videos on their smartphones. Devices such as phones and tablets might play big roles in many peoples’ lives, and few may realize just how much time they’re spending on their devices. According to Nielsen’s Total Audience Report, Americans aged 18 and older now spend more than 11 hours a day watching television, listening to the radio or using phones and other electronic devices. Common Sense Media, a nonprofit focused on assisting people in navigating the world of media and technology, notes that American teens and tweens spend about nine hours using media for enjoyment. Research conducted by Silentnight, a United Kingdombased bed and mattress company, found that mobile phone usage, at eight hours and 41 minutes per day, in the UK has now exceeded the amount of time people spend sleeping. Sleep experts warn that constant exposure to electronic devices is contributing to poor sleep and can have other negative effects on a person’s health. Cutting back on electronic device usage can prove challenging. However, with some patience and practice, it is possible to wean off devices without digital withdrawal symptoms.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

FLOSSING’S BENEFITS There was a challenge recently to the American Dental Association’s recommendation to use dental floss to clean between teeth at least once a day. In the absence of any scientific evidence that flossing works to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, the Associated Press conducted its own review of 25 studies, which raised some doubts about flossing’s effectiveness. So what are we to believe? The ADA points out that any study to date is either too short or too haphazard to be conclusive. On the other hand, one study found that children who had their teeth flossed by a trained dental hygienist at least five times a week experienced a 40% reduction in cavities and gum desease. Simply flossing your teeth can make them look brighter by removing

plaque and excess food particles that you many not see in the mirror or in areas that your toothbrush doesn’t reach. With dentistry constantly evolving, it is important that your dentist stays up-to-date with the latest techniques and education to provide you with the most effective oral health care. To schedule a consultation, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at (585) 343-4246. Our office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. The dental hygienist can help perfect your flossing technique in order to maximize flossing’s benefits.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been taking Lipitor for high cholesterol. Lately, my pharmacist said that all statins can cause memory loss. I hesitate to stop taking Lipitor, but I don’t want this side effect. Please advise. -- P.C. ANSWER: Your pharmacist is quite right that some users of statins can have the unwanted side effect of memory loss. This is quite variable: Some people never get this effect, and it can be quite severe in a few. It appears to be reversible in the majority of people who get it. I wouldn’t recommend stopping unless you are having the side effect. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have chronic constipation, and have had it most of my life. I have used most of the bulking (husk) things that are out there. Nothing works. Years ago, I went to my doctor, and he said that I could take MiraLAX and use it for the rest of my life. It has worked! Now my new doctor wants me off of it, and wants me to incorporate fiber into my diet. I already do this. Plus I drink a lot of water. I start my day with a 24 ounces of water every morning before anything else. Is there anything wrong with taking MiraLAX every day? I do not take the full dose. -- V.B. ANSWER: While I recommend non-drug treatments, such as increased water intake, high-fiber diet and exercise as treatment for constipation, that doesn’t work for everybody. In that case, using a medication as recommended by your doctor makes sense. Polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX) is a generally safe treatment that works by increasing fluid in the bowel. It’s a good idea to use it as little as is needed to keep the stool from getting uncomfortably hard. READERS: The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you ever heard of someone with sleep apnea outgrowing the need of a breathing aid, such as CPAP? -- G.S. ANSWER: Most cases of sleep apnea are due to obstruction of the airway, caused by the relaxation of muscles in the back of the throat. Excess weight and obesity are the major risk factors for sleep apnea, but it can happen in normal-weight people. It is more common in older people, and men are at higher risk than women. Almost any condition can go away by itself, but in nearly every case of obstructive sleep apnea getting better without a specific treatment that I have seen, it has been associated with significant weight loss. It doesn’t have to be extreme weight loss. Since alcohol can make sleep apnea worse, stopping alcohol occasionally is enough to get it under control. I also recently mentioned singing exercises as a therapy for OSA, in addition to oral devices, CPAP or BiPAP devices, and surgery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. © 2017 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved
