FACTS ABOUT FEBRUARY During leap years, February will end on the same day that it begins.
TRIVIA TEST By Fifi Rodriguez
1. SCIENCE: What is the threadlike conductor in an incandescent lightbulb called? 2. MOVIES: Who played the lead in the 1980s movie “Moscow on the Hudson”? 3. GEOGRAPHY: What is the official language of Mozambique? 4. ANIMAL KINGDOM: What is a female swan called? 5. TRANSPORTATION: What airport would you be traveling through if the threeletter designation is LGW? 6. TELEVISION: What is the subject matter of the drama called “Big Love”? 7. ANATOMY: A normal set of human teeth has how many incisors? 8. LITERATURE: To whom did Herman Melville dedicate the novel “Moby-Dick”? 9. GOVERNMENT: Which country’s parliament is called the Althing? 10. AD SLOGANS: What company advertised its products as “the best a man can get”?
BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR Boats: W intertime is boat show season, but it’s also the offseason for boaters w ho live in cooler climates. These factors combine to make it easier and less expensive to find a new boat. According to boat-buying retailer Boatline, consumers can probably get one of last year’s models at a good price.
Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

H O R O SC O P E S ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Congratulations, Lamb. The end of the month brings good news in the workplace, thanks to all the efforts you’ve made to get your projects off the ground and running. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Don’t let yourself be cowed into thinking you’re not up to the challenge you’ve taken on. Keep reinforcing your self-confidence, and no one and nothing can stop you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Positive responses to a recent workplace move should give you added assurance that you’re on the right track. Celebrate the good news with family and/or friends. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) There’s still a little emotional fuzziness you have to work through before you can feel really certain about your recent decisions. But you’re on the right track. Stay with it. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) You’re tempted by an offer that seems close to what you’ve been looking for. But before you pounce on it, see if you can coax out some added perks to sweeten the deal. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your efforts to settle a volatile situation should prove successful. Now could be a good time to analyze what might have created the problem in the first place. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A once-close associate re-emerges with news that could cause you to reconsider a recent decision. But don’t make a move before consulting a trusted adviser. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might feel pressured to reveal a colleague’s secret. But you can rely on your strong Scorpion sense of rectitude to help you continue to do the right thing. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) That pesky situation is still creating problems. But you are moving ahead with it, and soon it should be successfully resolved in your favor. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A spate of indecision leaves you susceptible to doubt. But you’ll soon regain your emotional sure-footedness and be back leading the way, as usual. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Love rules the week with new romances favored for single Aquarians looking for partners. Cupid also targets renewed commitment for wedded Water Bearers. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A surge of creativity keeps you happily busy through the week. But leave some quiet time to share with loved ones. Some long-awaited news finally comes through. BORN THIS WEEK: People rely on you whenever they need someone they can trust to be caring, considerate and also discreet. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter.... In winter the stars seem to have rekindled their fires, the moon achieves a fuller triumph, and the heavens wear a look of a more exalted simplicity. ~ John Burroughs, “The Snow-Walkers,” 1866

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

Someday By Jackie VanLare
Pen-A-Poem Contest W inners: War Letters By Sally Wood Dear John, You’re not the same since you went away, My heart is saddened at the words you say, Your letters are filled with fear and hate, All your courage and love have seemed to fade. Each passing letter tears us apart, For I no longer sense your laughing heart. Believe me, I wish with all my soul, That our relationship could still be whole. But I feel like our love is sinking, In all the awful things you are thinking. I wish you well in your endeavors, This is goodbye, weíre no longer lovers. -Sarah Jackson Dear Sarah, You told me that I’m not the same, But I’ve never seen so much life slain. Each day I live in this embittered world, This hateful environment where I’ve been hurled. I don’t know what you expect of me. Sunshine and smiles? With all the killing I’ve seen? I’ve shot people down like they were nothing! What kind of a life is this to be living? A Vietnamese stared me in the face, Both our guns were aimed at a fatal place, Fear, grief, and tears filled his slanted eyes, It was shoot or be shot so I ended his life. In light of everything that’s happening to me, Thinking of you helps me keep my sanity. Your love’s like a shaft of light in a dark cave, A cool refreshing rain during heatwave. Sarah, I love you so very much, I cherish the memory of your warm touch. Please, Sarah, please take me back, Help my heart to mend this crack. - Mark Lawson
I wish that you could see inside the love I have for you Then I know you’d understand The things I say and do
I know someday you’ll understand What I’ve been trying to say I only hope it’s not too late And don’t push you away
I know we have our differences The love I have inside of me And I am part to blame But where we are and where we were Is one I can’t explain So why is it, it hurts so much Are so far from the same And causes so much pain You tell me just to be myself I’ll always love you sweetheart And that is what I do And someday you will see Because I cannot be someone The girl you fell in love with Who’s not me just for you Is still just only me Maybe I just try too hard And want my life to be The fairytale I’ve dreamed of You in love as much as me
Blurred Images By Mike Vinci In memory of all of those who loved me We are given a special camera to document our lives It only takes the images that are witnessed through our eyes It stores up all these pictures someplace deep inside our mind In a special book so secret, that only we can find The cost of having such a gift is oh so very steep The images we truly hate, we also have to keep Sometimes when we’re not watching they can slip out of the book And land in front of us where we are always forced to look. They seem to be the awful ones we didn’t want to save The ones that come to haunt us like ghosts back from the grave There is a thing that happens, but only after many years When all the laughter’s done and after shedding all the tears You’ll notice that inside the book that something has occurred The images we fear so much are now becoming blurred They’ve kept their sharpened edges that caused us all those scars. And the wounds that never heal until we live among the stars. Now we only see the ones that stayed so crisp and clear The images of all the things we love and hold so dear Pictures of the people that we love until the end The ones we hope and pray that we will one day see again When the light is fading and we’re running out of time We’ll look inside the book again to occupy our mind. As our heart beat ceases and our bodies freed from strife All the joy returns to us as the pictures come back to life
Brought to you by these fine businesses.

Coming Home By Wendy E. Murray Some folks say that you can never go home. While that may be true, I beg to differ. It’s been twenty years since we left Rochester. After several ‘look & see’ explorations to other states, we decided to return to where our roots began, upstate New York. I was born at Rochester General Hospital and resided in Gates until I went off to college. After marrying my college boyfriend, we made our first home in a newlywed apartment in Irondequoit. Six of the couples in that building were ‘just marrieds.’ In that environment, I met an extraordinary young bride, like myself, who taught me how to cook. Having been raised in a very large Catholic family, my mother did all the cooking, and unbelievably, did not teach her young children how to prepare a meal. Weekly, I peeled potatoes, washed and dried the dishes, vacuumed the carpets, cleaned the bathrooms but was not allowed in the kitchen, except to bake cookies. That was her terrain only. Can you believe it? My new Italian friend, Corrine, showed me how to make meatballs, superb spaghetti sauce, plus chicken fingers, a recipe my children begged me to make. Her mother had taught her how to master beef tenderloin, surrounded with bacon and encased in phyllo dough. At the time, I had no idea what phyllo dough actually was. Corrine’s minestrone soup sounded like a delicacy. When she went back to her hometown in Pennsylvania, I was on my own but by that time, I had more confidence and could, at least, concoct a meatloaf. Time flew by and before my eyes, the children were off to college and sadly, their father and I divorced. Fast forward several years, I became a bride again. My new husband and I moved to Asheville, North Carolina. We left the cold winters and became transplants into Confederate territory. We learned about the ‘War of Southern Independence’ and developed a fondness for hiking in the Appalachian Mountains. We met wonderful folks, who had lived their whole lives in Western North Carolina. We felt
‘called’ to live there. Often, someone would ask “where your people from?” Yet, when retirement approached, we started searching again for a more affordable city to live in. In the twenty years we had made a home in North Carolina, the real estate market had skyrocketed, traffic had become congested and the word went out, far and wide, that Asheville was an All-American city, ‘quirky’ in nature (Obama’s family visited often). We laughed at the bumper sticker that said, ‘keep Asheville weird.’ To us, it seemed as if our small town atmosphere had exploded and the secret was OUT. Perhaps, there is a lesson to be learned here. You can return home provided one is open to change and expectations, not to mention different weather patterns. We feel lucky to have made a nest into a small cozy home in Fairport. Our backyard is fenced in and we are thinking of getting a small dog in spring. We can walk to the village, where we can feast at fine dining establishments, shop at a local meat market that offers excellent products, recycle my clothes at several consignment shops and hear the train whistle at night reminding me that I live in a town that is rich in history and beauty. Don’t forget the extensive Fairport library. What’s life without books? We await the adventures that our newly ‘recovered’ community shall bring. Life is good.

Shop Smart For Vintage Signs Antique shops are one venue for antique signs and coordinating pieces. Some sellers specialize in vintage signage. Antique stores are popular in many tourist towns and major cities, where more artistic neighborhoods tend to include one or more antique shops. If a particular antique store does not have what you are looking for, they may be able to secure certain pieces you desire from other vendors. Shoppers looking for antique signs also can purchase reproductions. There are many retailers that produce very good likenesses that may be considerably more affordable than the originals. You also can commission an artist to reproduce signage that fits with your design plans. Some research online or a query of artists in your community may yield prospects who can produce the sign you covet.
Wednesday Night Auction Starting at 3:30 p.m. A new collection of consignments every week, ranging from antiques to tools, artwork to furniture, sporting goods to kitchenware. Today’s trends and nostalgia from every decade all the raw materials needed to re-purpose, reuse and upcycle. Preview at bontragerauction.com Refreshments are available.

THE BOB FRANKEN COLUMN By Bob Franken Fake Nunes I covered Capitol Hill during my CNN phase, which was quite a while ago, but to this day, I have friends who are veteran members of Congress and, more importantly, members of the House and Senate intelligence committees. These are Washington “friends,” which is to say that when I’m reporting on them, they’re often adversaries. In return, they don’t give me any sort of favored treatment, particularly those on the two intelligence committees. Any conversation about the super-classified material they routinely see as they conduct their oversight of various national security operations is strictly off-limits. Since the committees were formed in the 1970s, their tradition has been proudly nonpartisan for obvious reasons, relative sanctuaries of harmony in the dissonant screech of politics. Until now. On the Senate side, that still seems to be the approach, but certainly not at House Intelligence, which is chaired by Republican Devin Nunes. As Donald Trump’s hand puppet, Nunes has thrown out any pretense of collaboration. He has repeatedly tried to muddy the waters of an investigation into Donald Trump’s murky relationship with the Russian government and into whether Vladimir Putin colluded with Trump and/or associates to influence the precious election for the president of the United States. That investigation is being conducted, of course, by special counsel Robert Mueller. Now Nunes, or his staff, has released a memo that attempts to selectively contrive a case that all the Russia probes are somehow tainted by partisanship. He did so over the strenuous objections of the FBI and Justice Department that it gives away secrets. It was released to much fanfare, but frankly, it divulged nothing of consequence, unless you count revealing the desperation that Trump and his cohorts (accomplices) might be feeling as Mueller starts tightening the vise. Nunes has done this kind of clumsy thing before, obliterating any separation between his committee’s jealously guarded oversight role, and his unsightly willingness to do whatever the Trumpsters want. Democrats predictably were bent out of shape, their twaddle flapping in outrage. But many Republicans were equally steamed. Rep. Trey Gowdy, as partisan as they come and a GOP member of House Intelligence: “The contents of this memo do not -- in any way -- discredit his investigation.” As he so often does, Sen. John McCain kicked it up a notch: “The latest attacks on the FBI and Department of Justice serve no American interests -- no party’s, no president’s, only Putin’s.” So now we have Bob Mueller and the FBI plodding along with the investigation, and Donald Trump commissioning several actions to sabotage it. His tactics, and those of the ones who have cast their lots with him, involve building a case against those who are building a case against him. The question is how far he’ll go in that effort, and what happens if he ends up being officially accused of being the Moscowian candidate. Will the politicians ramp up the courage to take action against him, or will they, like Nunes, continue to be his hand puppet while he serves the same function for Vladimir Putin? What an image! The Democrats had been agitating to put out their response to Nunes’ memo, their alternative version of the issue. Considering how little impact the GOP hucksters had, why bother? (c) 2018 Bob Franken Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an average of 11,500 snow-shovelingrelated injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006. Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms and hands and cardiac-related injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow. There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcattype devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.
8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

HOME-STYLE BAKED CHICKEN Serves 4 to 6 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 11⁄2 teaspoons Poultry Seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 ⁄4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1 ⁄2 teaspoon paprika 4 to 5 pounds skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs and drumsticks Preheat the oven and a 9-by-13inch metal roasting pan to 375ºF. Place the olive oil and butter in the pan and place the pan in the oven on the lower rack. In a small bowl, combine the poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Set aside. Place the flour in a resealable bag. Place a few pieces of the chicken in the flour at a time, seal, and shake to coat. Remove and vigorously shake off any excess flour. Place the flour-dusted chicken on a clean platter. Repeat with the remaining chicken pieces. Remove the roasting pan from the oven and immediately arrange the chicken skin-side up in a single layer over the bottom of the pan and then sprinkle with some of the poultry seasoning blend and paprika. It should sizzle. Place the hot pan back on the lower rack of the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Remove, baste by spooning the juices that have collected in the pan over each piece, and then sprinkle the chicken with the remaining poultry seasoning blend. Return the pan to the oven and bake for 20 minutes more. Remove and baste one last time before moving the chicken to the middle rack and baking for 10 to 15 minutes more to further crisp the chicken skin. Let rest for 5 to 8 minutes before serving.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
COPD Is DoubleWhammy It’s a fact that you already know. A mammogram can find lumps in the breast long before they are found any other way. A mammorgram only takes minutes. If you are uninsured and 40-64 years old, it’s FREE. So, what’s stopping you from calling right now?
FREE MAMMOGRAM
We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy BRIGHT IDEA If you have stained or discolored teeth, you might want to try a fast and effective professional toothwhitening procedure that can make your teeth up to eight shades lighter. This technique makes use of advanced LED light-activated technology to enhance the action of bleaching materials on teeth. One of the advantages of this new toothwhitening technique is the speed at which it can be accomplished. (Treatments typically take an hour.) This is made possible by the fact that light activates the toothwhitening agent to work more quickly. Severe discoloration, such as that associated with tetracycline stains, may require more than one treatment. Yellow and brown teeth respond better to treatment than gray teeth, which lighten but do not whiten.
If you’ve looked at yourself in the mirror and wished you liked your smile more, why not make a change for the better? Teeth can be whitened and their appearance improved by several methods of cosmetic dentistry. It is truly amazing what can be accomplished in a short time that can enhance your appearance for the rest of your life. Comprehensive, quality, gentle dental care for patients of all ages is available here at 6 Batavia City Centre. Call 585.343.4246 for an appointment. --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been told that I have COPD. The lung doctor said that he’s pleased with my X-ray and will see me next year. My concern is whether this will get worse. I’m scared to death. I have difficulty catching my breath. I quit smoking about four years ago. I know I can’t repair the damage that has been done, but is there anything I can do to keep this disease from getting worse? -- T.C. ANSWER: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in North America is due mostly to cigarette smoking, but cooking fires, asthma and other rare conditions also may predispose people to COPD. Lung function decreases with aging in all adults, but in people with COPD (a combination of emphysema and chronic bronchitis), the worsening of lung function over time is critical because of the loss of pulmonary reserve. You already have done by far the most important thing you can do to prevent further damage: quit smoking. Avoiding other air pollutants (especially secondhand smoke) also may help. Regular physical activity seems to slow progression of COPD. Treatment with inhaled steroids reduces airway inflammation and somewhat slows progression of the decline in lung function in COPD. Inhaled steroids also improve symptoms and reduce exacerbations. However, they do not have a significant effect on mortality. X-rays are one way of following COPD, but measuring lung function through pulmonary-function tests is a much better way of determining severity of disease. Your lung specialist can give you more-personalized information about your illness with those results. The booklet on COPD explains both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD, in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 601W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is, If a person eats a 2,000calorie meal, how many calories, when digested, are absorbed by the body? I find it hard to believe that the body will absorb every single one of the 2,000 calories ingested. Please advise. -- J.H. ANSWER: Our bodies are very well adapted to extract energy out of the food we eat, but you are right that there is some energy left in food at the time it is excreted. Some chemical energy also is used by the bacteria in the gut. A little bit is lost in the urine. But in general, we absorb probably 90 percent of the chemical energy stored in food. A few factors can affect that number. Food that is cooked or processed tends to have calories that are more easily accessible and more absorbable. This may be one reason that those who eat only raw foods tend to lose weight (another may be that they avoid highly calorie-dense foods). There also are medical conditions that prevent us from absorbing food properly (lactose intolerance and celiac disease are two of the more common of the many causes of malabsorption). In summary, calorie counts are imprecise, but still useful for comparing one food with another. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. FACTS ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON Few Americans would be hard pressed to identify George Washington’s visage, which is depicted on some American currency, including the $1 bill. Born in 1732 to Virginia planters, Washington’s interests included western expansion, which he was able to take part as a teenager, helping to survey the Shenandoah lands at the age of 16. Washington was also interested in military arts, and he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in 1754, eventually playing a role in what became the French and Indian War. In 1759, Washington was serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses, an assembly of elected representatives of the English colonies in North America. Growing frustrated with and feeling exploited by British regulations, Washington voiced his resistance to restrictions placed on colonists, who were moving toward what would become the American Revolution. At the Second Continental Congress, which assembled in 1775, Washington was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, taking command of troops at Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 3, 1775. Under Washington’s command, the Continental Army would ultimately succeed, winning the colonists their independence from British rule. In 1787, Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, where the new Constitution was ratified. Within two years Washington was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States. Though the current two-term limit was not law at the end of Washington’s second term, he chose to retire from the Presidency anyway, leaving office in 1797. He would retire to his Virginia home at Mount Vernon, where he still engaged in various business dealings. Within three years of his retirement, however, Washington would fall ill of a throat infection that ultimately took his life on December 14, 1799. In addition to providing the inspiration for Presidents’ Day, Washington’s legacy is that of a hero who led an army of colonists to a victory over a dominant empire. The Washington Monument and Mount Rushmore are two of the more notable monuments honoring the first President of the United States. In addition, the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. is so named in honor of George Washington.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING It’s difficult to know what is beneath the ground without having a property surveyed and marked. Digging without approval can result in damage to gas lines or water/sewer pipes. Always check with the utility company before digging trenches or holes.
LAWN & LANDSCAPING ITEMS TO AVOID WHEN COMPOSTING • Black walnut tree leaves or twigs: Leaves or twigs from black walnut release substances that might prove harmful to plants. • Coal or charcoal ash: Coal or ash from charcoal, such as the ash that builds up in the bottom of charcoal grills, may contain substances that are harmful. • Dairy products: When added to compost piles, dairy products, including butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt and eggs, can be malodorous and may attract pests, including rodents and flies. • Diseased or insect-ridden plants: The diseases and insects that plague plants may survive being transferred to compost piles. When the compost is ultimately distributed, these diseases and insects might then plague other plants. • Fats, grease, lard, or oils: Fats, grease, lard or oils also may attract rodents and flies, and that might be due to the unpleasant odors such substances can produce when added to compost piles. • Meat or fish bones and scraps: Like fats, grease, lard or oils, scraps from meat and fish and fish bones can smell unpleasant, potentially attracting rodents and flies. • Pet waste: Pet waste, including soiled cat litter, may contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses that can be harmful. • Grass trimmings treated with chemical pesticides: Trimmings from grass that was treated with chemical pesticides can negate the effects of composting by killing beneficial organisms produced within compost piles or bins.

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

On Sunday, January 28, Riga Recreation, in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, held its annual WinterFest, at the Churchville Elementary School. The community turned out to celebrate the season with the Lions “World Famous” Chicken BBQ along with a Kid’s Carnival that included: a bounce house, caricature drawings, air brush tattoos, many challenging games, and a juggler. take care of you don't know your story. You feel embarrassed because you have to have help with things you used to do every day on your own. But mostly you feel depressed, unloved, and alone. The family that you raised and the friends who you shared your life with are nowhere to be seen. This holiday season you will eat a meal prepared for you by people you don't know. You will eat alone in your room or at a table with strangers. This is how Every morning on my way to MOST, not all, but Most of the work I pass a dairy farm. trying to reflect on my deceased father to have a rowdy bunch of teenagers skateboarding nearby. If it was a recreational park it would've said so on the sign and would be built for one. No respect for the people who want moments with their loved ones, not a bunch of exercisers distracting them. Go to a state park if you want to exercise. That is a recreational park, the cemetery is NOT. It is a sacred place where loved ones are buried, not for your amusement and exercise. Why not build a fast food stand there then, or sell sports stuff. Cemeteries are not intended for peoples' personal exercise programs. Go up to the recreational center. Cemeteries weren’t put there for the public’s amusement.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

Sleep loss can affect memory in seniors Poor sleep can leave people feeling groggy, disoriented, depressed, and not up for facing the day. And now there’s new evidence that insomnia can contribute to memory loss and forgetfulness among the elderly. A study — the first of its kind — unveiled a new link between lack of sleep and memory loss. Researchers at the University of California, Berkley found that during sleep important brain waves are produced that play key roles in storing memories. These waves transfer the memories from the hippocampus to the prefrontal cortex, a portion of the brain where long-term information is stored. Sleep loss can cause the memories to remain in the hippocampus and not reach the long-term storage area, found researchers. This can contribute to forgetfulness and difficulty remembering simple details, such as names. Seniors are frequently plagued with deteriorated sleeping patterns that lead to shallow sleep and more awakenings, says those at the University of California. This can contribute to the prevention of memories being saved by the brain each evening. This is not the first time sleep and brain health have been measured. A 2008 University of California, Los Angeles study discovered that people with sleep apnea showed tissue loss in brain regions that help store memories. WebMD says imaging and behavioral studies show the role sleep plays in learning and memory and that lack of sleep can impair a person’s ability to focus and learn efficiently. Combine this with the necessity of sleep to make those brain wave connections for memories to be stored, and the importance of deep sleep is apparent. Another study, published in the journal Brain, conducted by doctors at Washington University in St. Louis, linked poor sleep with early onset of dementia, especially Alzheimer’s disease. Although poor sleep does not cause Alzheimer’s, it may increase brain amyloid proteins believed to be intrinsic to the disease. When slow-wave deep sleep is disrupted, levels of amyloid can grow and clog the brain. This is corroborated by data published in the journal Neurology. Getting deep sleep is important for reducing these proteins. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recognizes the difficulties elderly people may have in regard to sleep. The quality of deep sleep among older adults is often 75 percent lower than it is in younger people. Doctors can be cognizant of how sleep impacts memory and the onset of dementias and discuss insomnia treatment options with their patients.
Did You Know? Men and women over 50, who are considering returning to school may be eligible for financial assistance through various programs. According to the American Association of Retired Persons, older men and women who want to go back to school do not necessarily have to bankroll that expenditure on their own.

Little-known Facts About Abraham Lincoln In honor of Lincoln’s birthday, here are 13 facts about the man. 1. Towering over others at a height of 6 feet 4 inches tall, Lincoln remains the tallest president to hold office. It is likely his stature helped to present an air of authority during his presidency. 2. Lincoln had two romantic interests before he married Mary Todd in 1842. Lincoln was in a relationship with Ann Rutledge, who died of typhoid fever. He also courted Mary Owens for some time before they ended their relationship. 3. Lincoln was notoriously messy. His law office was often cluttered, much to the chagrin of his partner William Herndon. It is said Lincoln kept an envelope on his desk marked, “When you can’t find it anywhere else, look into this.” 4. Lincoln was the first president to be photographed at his inauguration. His future assassin, John Wilkes Booth, can be seen in a photo standing close to the president. 5. In 1849, Lincoln obtained Patent No. 6,469 for a device that was designed to lift and keep boats afloat when they passed over a sandbar or entered shallow water. Lincoln served as a ferry operator and flatboat pilot prior to entering politics. 6. Lincoln took his dreams seriously and was purported to be interested in psychic research and activities. Before his election to the presidency, Lincoln said he was startled by a vision of a double image of himself. The second image was pale, according to accounts. His wife was led to believe the vision meant Lincoln would be elected to two terms as president and die during the second. 7. Lincoln’s beard is almost as famous as the man. He was urged by advisors to grow a beard during his first term to soften some of his harsh features. 8. Lincoln was born to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks. Actor Tom Hanks is a distant relative of the former president. 9. Despite his stature, Lincoln apparently had a high-pitched voice and not a deep timbre. 10. Lincoln wore a size 14 shoe. 11. According to reports by his personal secretary John Hay, Lincoln would sometimes pace the White House because of insomnia. He would keep Hay up with funny stories or with readings of Shakespeare. 12. Lincoln accepted a challenge to a duel with James Shields, a state auditor. Lincoln chose a broadsword as the weapon, but Shields decided to work through his differences with Lincoln amicably rather than face him in the duel. 13. The contents of Lincoln’s pockets on the night he was killed were not revealed until February 12, 1976.
