Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is Panda and I’m an 8 pound spoiled rotten girl. My breed is Toy Fox Terrier and Chihuahua mix. I now live in upstate NY after moving from Chicago in July 2015, because my mommy got married. I love being leash free and exploring my fenced-in area. Thanks mommy Angela for the no boundaries policy but there are many new rules! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Drive with care everyday Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside. Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation. Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.

Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs. Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber. When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump. Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.
AUTO SECTION
Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.

Little-known Facts About Abraham Lincoln In honor of Lincoln’s birthday, here are 13 facts about the man. 1. Towering over others at a height of 6 feet 4 inches tall, Lincoln remains the tallest president to hold office. It is likely his stature helped to present an air of authority during his presidency. 2. Lincoln had two romantic interests before he married Mary Todd in 1842. Lincoln was in a relationship with Ann Rutledge, who died of typhoid fever. He also courted Mary Owens for some time before they ended their relationship. 3. Lincoln was notoriously messy. His law office was often cluttered, much to the chagrin of his partner William Herndon. It is said Lincoln kept an envelope on his desk marked, “When you can’t find it anywhere else, look into this.” 4. Lincoln was the first president to be photographed at his inauguration. His future assassin, John Wilkes Booth, can be seen in a photo standing close to the president. 5. In 1849, Lincoln obtained Patent No. 6,469 for a device that was designed to lift and keep boats afloat when they passed over a sandbar or entered shallow water. Lincoln served as a ferry operator and flatboat pilot prior to entering politics. 6. Lincoln took his dreams seriously and was purported to be interested in psychic research and activities. Before his election to the presidency, Lincoln said he was startled by a vision of a double image of himself. The second image was pale, according to accounts. His wife was led to believe the vision meant Lincoln would be elected to two terms as president and die during the second. 7. Lincoln’s beard is almost as famous as the man. He was urged by advisors to grow a beard during his first term to soften some of his harsh features. 8. Lincoln was born to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks. Actor Tom Hanks is a distant relative of the former president. 9. Despite his stature, Lincoln apparently had a high-pitched voice and not a deep timbre. 10. Lincoln wore a size 14 shoe. 11. According to reports by his personal secretary John Hay, Lincoln would sometimes pace the White House because of insomnia. He would keep Hay up with funny stories or with readings of Shakespeare. 12. Lincoln accepted a challenge to a duel with James Shields, a state auditor. Lincoln chose a broadsword as the weapon, but Shields decided to work through his differences with Lincoln amicably rather than face him in the duel. 13. The contents of Lincoln’s pockets on the night he was killed were not revealed until February 12, 1976.

The residents of the newly re-named LAKEVILLE VILLAGE would like to send heartfelt thanks to all the local merchants who donated merchandise and/ or gift cards, to be used at our Community Christmas Party as door prizes. Again many thanks and a very Happy New Year! Mary Nash Social Club Member I have several accounts with various different banking institutions, and that being said, the team at Hamlin’s Citizen’s Bank are the BEST. If there was a star rating process, KYLEE JONES would get a TEN. It is always enjoyable to do business with them. Not only do they get the job done, but I always leave Citizen’s with a smile on my face. I love bantering back and forth with my usual quips and one liners, with both Kylee and STEPHAN who is the assistant branch manager. So, thanks to Kylee and Stephan for allowing

me the time to banter with my quips and off the wall sense of humor. All of you have always been courteous and very friendly. Other bank employees should take pointers from how you treat your customers. Thanks for making banking so enjoyable. From the sugar lady. lol Thank you to everyone who helped to make the 2016 Manchester/ Shortsville Holiday Basket Program a success. We are nothing without your support. To all who shopped and donated food or gifts, those who wrapped the gifts, and those who delivered the items - THANK YOU. Your generosity made the Holidays brighter for many in our community. See you next year. Holiday Basket Committee I would like to thank Adrian who works at the Geneseo Walmart. I need distilled water for medical reasons and the shelves were empty. One employee said there was some in the warehouse, but he couldn’t get it for me then. When I asked Adrian he stopped what he was doing and got me the water from the warehouse (even though it wasn’t his department).
On December 8, a bus trip turned toxic. The bus was over an hour late at the pickup and the passengers waiting unleashed a tirade of abusive language that ruined the whole day. The most abusive passenger held us up further because she boarded the bus leaving her car running and we had to wait while she disembarked to turn it off. Of course, we were all supposed to be nice about that delay. Therefore- 1. Bus companies should refund for cancelled services or late services 2. Passengers should consider how their abusive language and demeanor has to be tolerated by other customers.
Whoever approved the zoning for these ridiculous LED Digital Lighted signs, made a stupid, poor decision! Why is it so hard to just say NO to them? They are too bright and too distracting. People who want to go to

these establishments know where they are without these borderline illegal Lighted signs! If these places were/are suffering for business, try better sales and less expensive pricing! A bright sign will not do it! They are trashy and cause light pollution! I thought bars had to do away with these neon signs. Why is it okay now? Zoning Boards should restrict future signs and get rid of existing ones! It is Light Pollution & negatively impacts environment.
On Sunday afternoon [local] Chorale held a wonderful holiday concert; actually it would have been wonderful if a young, undisciplined child had not ruined it. Parents are to be commended for introducing young children to such cultural events but not when they are permitted to disrupt the performance. The child in question was allowed to roam the aisle, babble on and on, and when finally corralled, she rebelled with a scream heard even from the entryway; it was far too long before she left. How inconsiderate to the audience and rude to the singers and director.

Secret s t o k eeping an organized shed A w ell-organized shed can save homeow ners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of w ork gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just w hat needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. M ake a pile of anything that w ill be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of w hat you have so you know w hether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another. Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap w ood to use to make your ow n storage shelves or a w ork bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items. In order to remember w here items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the w all so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of w hich tools are missing and w hich ones need to be purchased. Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they w ill alw ays be easily accessible. You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed w all to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. M etal funnels can hold tw ine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe. M ake sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items. Roll in the law nmow er, w heelbarrow and any other cumbersome items. Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION
HOME SERVICES
Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

Financially Fit: Five Steps To Get A Handle On Your Credit • Review your credit report. Take a comprehensive look at what’s there, good and bad. Make sure you thoroughly review your report for any errors or mistakes, especially after the holidays. Tools like AnnualCreditReport.com let you check your report annually for free. Check your credit score to see if it’s dropped and to give you a basis for comparison moving forward. Resources such as Credit.com allow you to easily pull your score. • Know what you owe. Tally up those balances and determine your debt to credit ratio - that is, the amount of money you owe on your cards versus your available credit, which accounts for approximately 30 percent of your credit score. If you’re using more than half of your available credit, this will likely lower your credit score. This means that if you have three credit cards with a combined limit of $10,000, your total balance should be below $5,000. • Be sure to pay your bills on time and at more than the monthly minimum. Sure, it’s intuitive, but simply paying your bills on time accounts for about 35 percent of your credit score. Make sure that at least the minimum required balance is paid - even if you can’t pay them in full. Also, pay more than the minimum payment every month to pay down your balance faster and decrease interest charges. • Pay off the card with the highest interest rate first. These are the cards that are costing you the most, so paying them off ahead of a card with a lower interest rate will save you more money. • Keep your cards open. Unless you have a compelling reason to close a card it’s best not to close credit cards, especially ones where you have a long positive payment history. When closing a card, not only can your debt to credit ratio increase, you also end up losing the history associated with the card and change the mix of your credit, which could negatively impact your score. And, in the future, do your research before signing on that dotted line. It may have been tempting to open up a retail store credit card to save 15 percent on a recent purchase, but those savings are now ultimately going to end up on your billing statement as interest. Instead, look for a card that works with your lifestyle. Review your options and find a card with a great rewards program and the lowest interest rate possible.

STAY SAFE AND WARM DURING W INTER W ORKOUTS Layer correctly. Layering has long been a reliable w ay to beat the cold w hen temperatures are at their low est. But layering must be done correctly to be effective. W hen choosing your w orkout gear, choose an inner layer that w ill move moisture aw ay from your skin. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Can Spleen Rupture Without Any Trauma? DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was admitted to the hospital with a ruptured spleen that bled into his belly. His surgeon repaired it with a coil. He was not in an accident and had no injuries or any bruising anywhere on his body. His doctor had never seen this; he says a ruptured spleen usually is sustained from some sort of accident. My husband is almost 59, and in good health otherwise. How could this happen, and could this happen again? -- J.C. ANSWER: The spleen removes defective red blood cells from the circulation, and it also destroys bacteria and infected cells. In fact, it is in many ways like a big lymph node, responding to infections by activating and enlarging. Although a ruptured spleen is well-described in the literature, I’ve never seen a case like your husband’s either. The last ruptured spleen I saw was a college football player who was simultaneously hit by two opposing players, one on either side, both much larger than he was. Most people with spleen rupture had an enlarged spleen to begin with, from cancer such as leukemia or lymphoma, infection such as EBV (the virus that causes mononucleosis), inflammatory conditions such as pancreatitis or mechanical causes such as pregnancy. A few cases are related to medications, and a few have no identifiable cause for rupture. As far as risk of it happening again, there you have me. I found one paper that says the prognosis is “excellent.” I would have to refer you back to his surgeon. People who have had their spleens removed are at risk for certain infections, and should have a vaccine for pneumococcus, a major cause of pneumonia. The vaccine is normally given at age 65. Your husband should speak with his doctor about getting it now (since I don’t know if his spleen is now considered normal). *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read in your column that for vaginal atrophy (dryness/itching) you suggest that a woman use topical cream instead of estrogen cream. I am 59 years old, and have been using Premarin cream externally for a month with noticeable results. I use a dab every other day. Should I continue to use it even when I don’t have symptoms, or only as needed? If you think non-hormonal cream would be better, could you suggest one? I have tried one, but it didn’t seem to be effective. -- A.A. ANSWER: I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. “Topical” in this case meant a vaginal estrogen cream, as opposed to estrogen taken by mouth. I would continue using it, since it has been effective. Most women use it twice a week after initial treatment. Non-estrogen creams are fine for many women, but estrogen creams like Premarin usually are more effective. Dryness and itching may be caused by recurring vaginal infections, which are often troubling to women. The booklet explains them and their treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1203W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. © 2017 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

If you are wondering whether professional in-office tooth whitening offers any advantages over the toothwhitening available in a pharmacy, you can begin with efficacy. While tooth-whitening systems developed for home treatment are restricted to using low-dose whitening agents, inoffice whitening procedures are conducted under the careful supervision of dental professionals, who use high-concentration whitening gels to “power whiten” teeth in a single session. During this time, the dentist will either apply a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield that protects your gums from irritation. At the same time, a special light or laser might be used to enhance the action of the whitening agent. No other tooth-whitening method is as quick or effective. Whitening needs to be repeated from time to time if you want to
maintain the brighter color. Not everyone is a good candidate for whitening. Because whitening only works on natural tooth structure, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings and crowns prior to beginning a whitening treatment. If you are looking for a cosmetic dentist, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, would love to welcome you to our office as a new patient. To schedule a consultation, please call (585) 343-4246. Our office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. In-office tooth-whitening procedures offer the best whitening gels and techniques for avoiding tooth-sensitivity issues.

How seniors can preserve their brains Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health. But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe. It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy. However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage. Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults. A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Having a purpose also may help those who do not have Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health can consider these strategies. · Start exercising the brain early on. A study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal examined cognitive function in people ages 45 to 70. Researchers found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-year-old participants as well as the older participants. It’s never too early to put a brain health plan into motion. · Read more books. Reading can open individuals up to new vocabulary and scenarios that promote a stronger brain and recall
Doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles can keep the brain sharp.
ability. Enrolling in an education course at a local college, community center or online also may be beneficial. · Hit the gym. Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. This could be because exercise elevates heart rate, which pumps more blood to the brain and body. · Supplement with DHA. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and mono-unsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Supplements also may help, but individuals should consult with their doctors about which products to take. · Challenge the mind. Men and women can engage in challenging activities that stray from their routines. Puzzles, strategic games, jigsaw puzzles, or difficult hobbies can benefit the brain. · Keep a close-knit group of friends. Regular conversation and social interaction is a key component of any brain health wellness plan. Slowing cognitive decline and promoting greater brain health should be a priority for adults of all ages.

32nd Annual
Pen-a-Poem CONTEST WINNER:
RUNNER-UP:
The Trunk
Once More
By Ellen Hopsicker
By Laurie Reynolds
A battered trunk in the corner stood With layers of dust upon its lid How many years have drifted past Since fingers probed its content last The treasure held there deep inside Was placed by some forgotten bride A handsome soldier and his sweet young wife Had loved and wished to share a life Yet all that remains is an old tintype And a ruffled gown from a long ago night A box of checkers scratched and scarred And a folded letter that tears had marred It tells of the soldier forced to roam Though his aching heart had yearned for home The battle he feared was then in sight And the soldier knew an anguished night With the grace of God he said he’d be Homeward soon his bride to see They fought with venom all around But the soldier had fallen to bloodied ground A dying captive cold as stone Soon would his wife be alone So the family Bible old and worn Was marked with the blue of his uniform Then long ago that broken bride Packed the trunk with her heart inside And there it stands its secrets hid Beneath a dark and dusty lid.
The old farm house stood vacant and in disrepair, An elderly couple had died and there was no one to care. In the yard where children once giggled and played, A rotting swing set in pieces now laid. The realtor showed the property once more this day; “Been on the market a long time” the neighbors did say. “Too many repairs,” potential buyers had grumbled But the couple, to each other in the corner, only mumbled. They put their offer in right after the house tour Considerably lower since they’d have to spend much more. When they were approved and given the news The newlyweds happily considered their next move. Once the mortgage was secured; Contractors were hired and more spending occurred. On Valentine’s Day they moved to the old farmland With time and elbow grease all would go as planned. Five years later their family complete, Teeter totter and swing set climbed on by little feet. Children playing and having happy times galore; This house has become a home once more.
