MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Feb. 16, 1894, gunslinger John Wesley Hardin is pardoned after spending 15 years in a Texas prison for murder. Hardin was reputed to have shot and killed a man just for snoring and had probably killed at least 40 people. How seniors can simplify everyday tasks The ability to perform everyday tasks is something many people take for granted. But as men and women approach or exceed retirement age, many may start to struggle with chores and tasks they have performed for decades. Physical limitations are a common side effect of aging. But such limitations do not have to prove too big a hurdle for seniors to clear. In fact, there are many ways for seniors to simplify everyday tasks while maintaining their independence. · Embrace technology. Even the proudest Luddites cannot deny technology’s potential to make seniors’ lives easier. Seemingly simple tasks like shopping for groceries and vacuuming a home can be difficult for seniors with dwindling or limited mobility. But seniors with Internet access in their homes can order their groceries online and then pick them up in-store or have them delivered, saving them the trouble of walking around the store. With regard to vacuuming, autonomous vacuum cleaners have removed the need to use traditional vacuum cleaners. Certain autonomous vacuums employ sensors to detect dirty spots on the floor, and these vacuums can even be programmed to clean the home while residents are out of the house. · Upgrade bathrooms. Tasks associated with personal hygiene also tend to be taken for granted until they become difficult. But a few simple bathroom alterations can help seniors safely navigate the bathrooms in their homes so they can maintain their personal hygiene without fear of injury. Grab bars can be installed on shower walls so seniors can safely get in and out of their showers and bathtubs. Such bars are both effective and inexpensive, and some do not even require any drilling to install. Specialty grab bars, tub grips and tub transfer benches are just a few additional products that can make bathing easier for seniors who have lost or are starting to lose some of their physical strength.

· Get “smart” on the road. Seniors who are experiencing mild difficulty driving can make getting about town that much easier by plugging their smartphones into their vehicles or making use of the various apps that have become standard in modern vehicles. For example, the maps app on a smartphone can be connected to a car and direct seniors to their destinations, saving them the trouble of remembering all the ins and outs of how to get a particular destination. Seniors also can employ apps to help them find their vehicles should they forget exactly where they parked in crowded parking lots. Such apps can increase seniors’ comfort levels on the road while helping them maintain their independence. · Downsize. Whether downsizing to a smaller home or simply downsizing a lifestyle, seniors may find that living smaller is akin to living simpler. Empty nesters may find they no longer need several bedrooms in their homes, and moving into smaller homes can reduce their daily workloads while also clearing out clutter that can make performing everyday chores more difficult. Men and women accustomed to hustle and bustle may also find that cutting back on professional and/or personal commitments gives them more energy for everyday activities while enriching the commitments they continue to maintain. Aging men and women can employ various strategies to simplify their lives and maintain their independence well into their golden years.

Did You Know? Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that occurs when a person loses too much bone, produces too little bone or both. Though the disease is most often associated with women over 50, anyone can suffer from osteoporosis, which weakens bones and can make them more susceptible to breaks.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Switch things up. When strength training, do not work the same muscle group two days in a row. Muscles need time to recover. If you prefer circuit strength training where you exercise various muscle groups in one day, do not strength train on back-to-back days, leaving at least one day in between strength training sessions so muscles have ample time to recover.

Be The Reason Her Eyes Light Up!

LEARN HOW TO WRITE A CLASSIC LOVE LETTER Today’s digital world has given rise to fast, stinted communications. According to the Pew Research Center, texting is the most widely used smartphone app, with 97 percent of Americans using it at least once a day. Across the globe, 8.3 trillion text messages are sent each year. That translates to roughly 16 million messages per minute. In addition to text messaging, social media posts are generally concise and short on depth. The written form of communication has changed dramatically in the last decade, as letter-writing and other forms of prose have all but faded away. But come Valentine’s Day, it can be special to dust off that pen and paper to express oneself via the written word in the name of love. Love letters are cherished keepsakes that can be kept for years. Such couples can illustrate a couple’s present-day love for one another and shed insight on their relationship years later. Here are some steps for writing a romantic love letter or note. • Jot down ideas and inspiration. Make a list of attributes and qualities in a spouse or romantic interest that you would like to highlight. Write down phrases and terms that come to mind. These words can serve as the foundation for the letter. • Categorize your thoughts into three areas. Jot down things that you like and love about the person, things that the person may do for you or your family that you appreciate, and various memories from throughout the years. • Write what you know. Do not feel pressured to make this letter more complicated than it has to be. The words will come when you write from the heart. While you can use other letters to spur ideas, do not lose your voice or try to mimic someone else’s work. • Make the letter personal and specific. Small details are important and make love letters more meaningful. Such details illustrate to a significant other that this letter was specifically written with them in mind. • Disregard length. The letter does not have to be a certain length. Whether it is a paragraph or several pages, the letter will be a successs if it says what you want to express. It doesn’t have to be long if that’s not your style. Writing a love letter can be a wonderful way to express romantic sentiments this Valentine’s Day.

According to a new study by Remodeling magazine, these days you can expect to recoup about two-thirds of your costs on a typical home improvement if you sell your home within a year after completing the job, compared with 87% in 2005, when home values were at their peak.

Carpets & Bedding

On the Saturday before Thanksgiving I accidentally fell while working at an exit of the Thruway, breaking my hip. I want to thank everyone who stopped to help me, especially the first woman who let me lean against her until the ambulance came. She was my angel. Thank you to my coworkers who brought blankets to cover me up. A thank you to my supervisor who came quickly from another exit and stayed with me at the hospital. I’m still at home recovering. There are just so few words to say how truly grateful I am. I’m just so overwhelmed by you all. God bless each of you. My five-year-old brother spent some time in the hospital over the holiday season. At the hospital, there were kind, caring nurses who worked hard to

309 Ellicott St., Batavia • 343-0754 wortzmanfurniture.com

help him all day, every day. Among other things, I saw a nurse hold his hand and get him some Italian ice so that he would take his medicine. Also, I know a nurse in our area who was excited to work on New Year’s Eve so that she could see the first baby of 2017. I am so thankful for the nurses in our area who sacrifice and work so hard to help others. The Memorial Day Detachment # 468 of the Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who participated in our Toys For Tots campaign. We collected, and with the help of our participating agencies, distributed over 5,000 toys to children in Ontario and Livingston Counties. All toys collected in Ontario or Livingston County were distributed within that county. We appreciate everyone who participated as a drop off point, made donations, helped distribute the toys or just spread the word. A lot of children had a Merry Christmas because of you and we are truly grateful. Thank you.

People need to learn how to drive. I am a 20-year-old woman and I have never been in an accident of any kind. I drive the same route every day to school and work, almost always stuck behind a vehicle with a driver who does not know how to use the round-about or how to correctly use turning signals, etc. Not all the time is the driver old, but last week I was behind an older woman who stopped in the middle of the round-a-bout. I stopped at the yield, honked, and motioned for her to “GO” so she did not cause an accident! In the next round-about down the road, she proceeded to do the same thing! It disgusts me that America has become a hazard on the roads due to incapable drivers. As a retail store employee please remember a few things the next time you are in line. We’re supposed to make sure you leave the store happy & for the most part “say yes.”

So... Yes, it’s rude when you’re on your cell as we help you. Yes, you are taking your miserable life out on the wrong person; it’s not my fault that you’re miserable. Yes we know you switched the tags/stickers for an even lower price. Yes, we think you’re nuts asking for a discount on an item because that’s the price you think it should be; It’s a business not a garage sale. Yes, I am embarrassed for you when you’re yelling at a cashier, calm down because you’re making a fool of yourself. Smile. Merry Christmas

The polite garbage can etiquette is to put your trash cans out the evening before or morning of pickup day and bring them in once they’ve been emptied. When you put yours out ONE WEEK prior to pick-up day and then leave the empty, scattered cans on your front lawn for days afterward it becomes an eyesore to the neighborhood. Think about this ~ if the entire neighborhood followed that practice what kind of a slum would this street look like? Please show some consideration to those of us who care.

W INTER RECIPES ARE KNOCKING: HELLO ONIONS Cooking w ithout onions is like trying make a BLT w ithout the tomato -- it’s possible to fill the void w ith something else, but you’ll probably feel like you’re missing something. Plus, now that it’s time to put on layers and nestle up to a fire, w inter recipes are a’brew ing, and they’re full of tasty onions. Yellow onions, in particular, that are harvested during cold w eather months are perfect for roasts, soups, slow -cooked dishes and other w inter favorites. Specifically, yellow onions are ideal for these applications to help build flavor profiles because of their robust, savory taste. W hether headlining a dish, such as french onion soup, or playing a more subtle, supporting role, like meatloaf w ith onions, this vegetable lends itself to a variety of uses, making onions about as flexible as a yoga master. Regardless of how you use the staple vegetable, onions offer a great deal of nutritional value, and they are associated w ith low er risks of heart disease and cancer.

To prepare the sauce: Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and set aside until the ribs are ready to remove from the foil. Gently heat the sauce on the side burner for 10 to 15 minutes before using. Carefully remove the ribs from the foil and plac e on grids. Baste generously w ith sauce, and grill for 10 minutes per side, leaving the lid open, turning several times, and basting w ith sauce after each turn. Heat remaining sauce to a boil and then allow it to simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Serve on the side as a dipping sauce.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Cracked Fingertips? Try a Home Remedy

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

STEADY EROSION Sugar and carbohydrates are not the only things we ingest that have the potential to damage teeth. Many of us also eat foods and drink beverages that contain acids that contribute to “dental erosion.” This underappreciated problem, which affects as many as 20% of the population, begins with softening (demineralization) of the enamel and underlying dentin, which results in diminished tooth structure. Dental erosion can also result from brushing too forcefully, toothgrinding, and medications taken by older patients that reduce saliva flow. To prevent dental erosion from occurring, patients are urged to consume fewer acidic beverages, limit consumption of citrus fruits, and use toothbrushes with soft bristles. They should also try to at least rinse teeth after eating.

Erosion usually shows up as hollows in the teeth and a general wearing away of the tooth surface and biting edges. This can expose the dentine underneath, which is a darker, yellower color than the enamel. Because dentine is sensitive, your teeth can become more sensitive to heat and cold. To schedule an appointment, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at (585) 343-4246. Our office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. By chewing sugarless gum, you can increase the flow of saliva, which helps to mineralize teeth.

DR. ROACH WRITES: I wrote a column on cracked fingertips, and received a wealth of suggestions from readers. For prevention, some suggestions I liked included avoiding too-hot water for handwashing, antibacterial soaps and wool gloves, all of which can remove protective oils from your fingers. A humidifier in the house can prevent drying of all the skin. Home-treatment remedies included flax-seed oil or B vitamins by mouth. (I don’t know if these are effective, but they should be safe.) Most people recommended emollients to the hands, specifically Preparation H, O’Keefe’s Working Hands, Bag Balm, CeraVe, Chapstick and Carmex Healing Cream. Plain petrolatum (Vaseline) works very well for many people and is inexpensive. The area can be covered at night by a bandage or glove. Several people recommended saltwater soaks. One noted that the pure mountain water of Colorado Springs cured him in three days. Finally, one person recommended trimming the nails quite short. These home remedies have helped many. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: After an extreme case of vertigo, including vomiting and being taken to the emergency room, my unsteadiness remains. Over a week later, I need to use a walker to be safe. I am 79, and this happened once four years ago, but without the aftereffects. Any suggestions? -- M.W. ANSWER: The major causes of vertigo, acute labyrinthitis and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, often continue to produce attacks that tend to lessen in severity up to a month after the initial severe attack. A walker may be a useful precaution while recovering. If the problem persists, I strongly recommend a visit with a physical and/or occupational therapist for vestibular rehabilitation, which is physical therapy to restore balance. It also might be necessary to revisit your doctor to confirm the original diagnosis. The booklet on vertigo explains this disruptive condition in detail and outlines its treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 801W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My 15-year-old son was just admitted to the hospital for depression and ADD. His thyroid tests came back abnormal. There is thyroid disease in the family. Is that the cause of his illness? -- Anon. ANSWER: Thyroid conditions, including both hyper- (too much) and hypo- (too little) thyroid hormone are common in the general population, but more so in people who are diagnosed with a wide variety of psychiatric illnesses, including depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. I have read that up to a third of people in new admissions for psychiatric conditions have thyroid abnormalities. It isn’t always clear whether the thyroid problem caused the psychiatric illness, and probably most often there is a large combination of factors, including genetics, environmental and medical conditions that affect the development of psychiatric conditions. It is clear that sometimes, but not always, treating the underlying thyroid condition can make managing the psychiatric symptoms much easier. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.
