INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY While corned beef has become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States, the corned beef eaten in the United States is not the corned beef familiar to people in Ireland. That’s because the corned beef eaten in the U.S. is largely from kosher Jewish butchers, whose corned beef is made from brisket, a tougher cut of meat taken from the front of the animal, whereas the corned beef produced in Ireland comes from the hindquarter.

(585) 343-0022 604 E. Main St., Batavia, NY woodsidegranite.com BAGPIPES ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF IRISH MUSIC TRADITION Celtic culture is rife with tradition. Traditional music is one identifying factor of the people who reside in countries awash in Celtic heritage, such as Ireland and Scotland. The strains of bagpipes can be heard during various celebrations and memorials. Bagpipes can produce uplifting and upbeat tunes or somber notes ideal for moments of reflection. Bagpipes are in a class of musical instruments known as aerophones. They produce sound through reeds from a constant reservoir of air trapped in a bag. Bagpipes are comprised of an air supply; a bag that holds the air; a chanter, which looks similar to a recorder and has finger holes to produce the melody; and one or more drones, which produce the sustained pitch. In bagpipes, the drones are the pipes placed over the musicians’ shoulders. Since the 14th century, bagpipes have appeared in European art and literature. Evidence of bagpipes in Ireland can be traced back to 1581, when John Derrick’s “The Image of Ireland” clearly illustrates a bagpiper. However, actual examples of bagpipes found before the 18th century are rare. What some music aficionados may not know is that not all bagpipes are the same, and Irish bagpipes have distinctions that set them apart from other varieties. Irish bagpipes, or uilleann pipes, differ from other types of bagpipes, including Scottish Highland pipes. Uilleann is derived from the Irishlanguage term piobai uilleann, which means, “pipes of the elbow.” A full set of uilleann pipes has a chanter, three drones and three keyed regulators. A half set will have no regulators. The pipes are tuned in the key of D, and unlike many other pipes, the reed will over blow. This gives uilleann pipes a range of two octaves. The chanter also can produce sharps and flats. In addition, regulators give them extra dimension of sound. Irish pipes have a softer sound than other bagpipes, enabling them to be played indoors. Although bagpipes have been integral to ancient Irish history, they are still alive and well today. Many bagpipers still proudly play them throughout Europe and in North America. The resonating sound of the pipes can be heard during parades and various celebrations, such as on St. Patrick’s Day.

I graduated from Wayne Central School District in June 1964. A week later I began work at Xerox Corporation in building 207 on the Webster, NY campus. My career would grow for 25 years and as a retiree I now look back now on all those years fondly and gratefully. The company had established Research & Engineering at 800 Phillips Road and both the company and the campus were growing by leaps and bounds; it was a truly exciting time to join this Fortune 500 company. I was appointed the back-up receptionist in manufacturing - the busiest reception area for the entire plant. Every visitor was required to sign in, display a badge, then allowed to visit a designated employee(s). On a daily basis, I would encourage all first-time visitors to take a campus map, as many would get lost since the order of the buildings was at best, not logical! I quickly rose to the executive secretarial ranks and worked for some of the original Haloid managers who helped to take the company from Haloid to Xerox Corporation. What an education, with mentoring from some of the brightest and keenest minds in the industry. I also gained a very large circle of new friends, some of whom still remain in my life. In 1989 I decided to leave the only “mothership” I had ever known to move into the sales and marketing arena. I had finally found my calling and I enjoyed another 20+ years loving what I did for a living every day. Retirement allowed me to look back in search of something more and I soon began to research what organizations would give meaning to my new lifestyle. I was introduced to the XRX Pioneer Club (www.xeroxpioneerclub.org), a social group for Xerox retirees. Ironically, I had never heard of the retiree club in all those 25 years of employment, but I quickly found a way to turn my skill set into motion! Appointed as Membership Chair, my mission was simple - retain every single current member as well as attract new members. Along the way, I added Public Relations to my job description and began a partnership with the local media to get the word out about our club. We are a not-for-profit organization, started in the 1960’s when Joe Wilson was our leader.
The club offers a bowling and a golf league, trips and travel, a singles group, a monthly newsletter (The Xpress) and monthly luncheons with speakers. The group also offers corporate discounts, BJ’s discounted memberships/renewals, camaraderie, and an avenue to stay abreast of all things Xerox-related. BUT… the thing the club is most proud of is their annual Community Service Project - giving back to our local communities; in place since the 1980’s! The focus for 2017 is Cameron Community Center (www.cameronministries.org) - an urban outreach center in the Lyell-Otis neighborhood. The center’s wish list includes sugar, coffee, school supplies, children’s socks/undies. 98% of the residents served live in poverty! THANK YOU to Chester Carlson for believing in and persevering amidst rejection and discouragement for his invention of xerography. THANK YOU to Joe Wilson for his leadership and vision. And, THANK YOU to all the men/ women who worked tirelessly at Haloid to make great sacrifices and were courageous enough to help move the seed of an idea to the success of Xerox today!! Please contact Sandy Leary, sandyhhi@rochester.rr.com, 585-872-0975 if you’d like to submit a not-for-profit organization for 2018 consideration or if you’d like to join the club.

DID YOU KNOW? The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY Many establishments display the familiar Irish tricolour flag on St. Patrick’s Day, and paradegoers may even wave miniature versions of this significant symbol in support of those marching. This instantly recognizable flag has a rich history. Equal parts green, white and orange, the flag was designed to foster peace in the country that had experienced considerable turmoil due to the divide between the country’s Protestant and Catholic residents. The green in the flag represents the Irish Catholics, while the orange represents the Irish Protestants. The white is a symbol of hope for peace between the two factions. Though Ireland established the tricolour as its national flag in 1921, it first appeared much earlier when Irish national Thomas Francis Meagher unfurled it in 1848.

Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive.

How to address frequent feelings of coldness As people age, many report feeling chilly even when the temperature outside is warm. Studies have shown that older people are more likely to have slightly colder body temperatures than their younger counterparts. Feeling cold can be the result of the natural aging process, or it may be symptomatic of a medical condition. Understanding the reasons behind chilliness can help people take proper action. Aging adults can feel cold for various reasons. As people age, their metabolisms slow down, leading to decreased energy. During times of low energy output, one can feel cold. The American Geriatric Society Foundation for Health suggests that individuals with slower metabolisms may not produce enough heat from their own bodies to stay warm. Circulation issues also may be a concern. As people age, the walls of their blood vessels may lose their elasticity, negatively affecting circulation as a result. Vasoreceptors also may no longer be as quick to direct blood vessels in order to constrict to keep body temperature up. Inadequate fat storage may also be a contributor. Older people generally have less subcutaneous fat stores and muscle mass, both of which can insulate their bodies from cold weather. As a result, they may have trouble regulating body temperature. Exercise and healthy eating may help remedy this situation. Certain medical conditions or medications may be to blame, too. SUNY Upstate Medical University offers that some drugs, like beta blockers, can decrease heart rate, which can reduce circulation to the extremities. High cholesterol levels can impair blood flow. Hypothyroidism, or an underperforming thyroid, also can affect a person’s ability to regulate body temperature. It’s
It’s not uncommon for older adults to feel colder.
imperative that people speak with their doctors to rule out any medical conditions or medication issues that may be contributing to their feelings of being cold. The following are some additional steps aging men and women can take to stay warm. · Make sure you are at a healthy weight for your gender and age. · Get the cardiovascular system pumping by exercising more. · Layer clothing until you feel comfortable so that you are not adjusting the thermostat as frequently. · Wear a vest to keep your chest warm to prevent heat being drawn from the extremities. Often the body will sacrifice heat in the hands and feet to keep its core warm. · Invest in wool socks and blankets, as wool will help wick away moisture from the body. Feeling cold is usually nothing out of the ordinary when a person gets older. Fortunately, there are ways that older men and women can stay warm.
MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On March 29, 1973, two months after the signing of the Vietnam peace agreement, the last U.S. combat troops leave South Vietnam. ST. PATRICK’S DAY FUN FOR YOUNGSTERS Many families decorate their homes for St. Patrick’s Day. While such decorations are rarely as extensive as Christmas decorations, parents can encourage their kids’ creative sides by organizing crafts projects for youngsters and their friends. Design projects where kids can create some of the symbols of St. Patrick’s Day that appear in popular culture, such as four-leaf clovers or leprechauns.
MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asks Congress to send U.S. troops into battle against Germany in World War I. Four days later, Congress obliged. Wilson then signed the Selective Service Act, which required men between 21 and 35 years of age to register for the draft. The Army quickly grew from 200,000 troops to 4 million.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On March 28, 1941, workers start clearing trees from hundreds of acres of land 30 miles west of Detroit, in preparation for construction of the Ford Motor Company’s Willow Run plant, which will build B-24 bomber planes. Early on the plant was plagued by labor shortages and earned the nickname “Willit Run?”

DOAN E-Z AUTO ST. PATRICK’S DAY FUN FOR YOUNGSTERS St. Patrick’s Day and Irish culture in particular is synonymous with music, and there may be no better way to stoke kids’ enthusiasm for St. Patrick’s Day than to introduce them to Irish music. Check out local entertainment venues to see if there are any Irish-inspired concerts on tap. If possible, find shows geared toward youngsters that encourage them to participate by singing along or dancing as the musicians play. Kids who seem especially inspired can even be encouraged to learn an instrument associated with Irish music, such as the banjo, tin whistle or violin.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICK Saint Patrick’s work as a Christian missionary incorporated some pagan beliefs to which many natives of Ireland had previously subscribed. He combined those beliefs with the Christian sacrament, and the Celtic cross traces its origins to this combination of pagan beliefs and Christianity.
Thank you, Genesee Valley Penny Saver… Some are skeptical about print products because “No one reads the paper or weekly shoppers anymore.” Not true! Thousands do each week, and they are customers and new consumers that all businesses need. My father is 84. No cell phone, no computer. He pays cash for everything and is still a very strong consumer. He uses the phone book, local newspapers and the Genesee Valley Penny Saver religiously. We live in a time when local print papers are fewer and fewer. We all like a sense of community and local news so weekly shoppers like the Penny Saver have tremendous value. Thanks for your good service and for assisting me and partnering with me to solicit tenants in my real estate business. Best regards,
Bob Houle Genesee Valley Penny Saver advertiser

SEALANTS PREVENT CAVITIES One of the most effective ways of preventing cavities from forming in the teeth of young children is to coat the chewing surfaces of permanent back teeth (molars and premolars) with a plastic coating that protects them from decay. Research shows that “dental sealants” are quick, easy, and painless to apply and could prevent up to 80 percent of cavities in school-aged children. Yet, a recent report from the CDC indicates that about 60 percent of school children ages 6-11 years do not get dental sealants. To help bridge this gap, parents are urged to inquire about this very worthwhile treatment for their children. It is far more cost-effective to prevent cavities than to fill them. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL recommends that children have sealants because as permanent teeth erupt, the molars develop pits
and fissures that can trap food and bacteria, leading to tooth decay. When we seal these crevasses, teeth are easier to keep clean and free from cavities. It is important to get children to the dentist at a young age for cleanings and check-ups to help prevent cavities and set them up for a healthy smile for life. To schedule an appointment, please call (585) 343-4246. Our office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Research shows that dental sealants prevent 80 percent of cavities for two years after application and continue to protect against 50 percent of cavities for up to four years after placement.

DEAR DR. ROACH: It would be helpful if you described some of the warning signs/symptoms of a bad hip that requires replacement. I now know that such a condition does not necessarily announce itself with chronic severe pain in the hip. Indeed, what sent me to the doctor was a recurrent pain in my groin. My hip was relatively pain-free, and even then I had only a mild discomfort that I thought was simply some arthritis. What I failed to appreciate over the past few years was the very gradual loss of my range of motion, leading to difficulty with simple activities, such as tying my right shoe or cutting my toenails. In retrospect, I feel rather foolish that I did not realize sooner that I was having hip problems. Perhaps you can alert others to the signs of gradual hip degeneration that fall short of acute hip pain. -- B.A. ANSWER: You have done a lot of the work for me. The groin is the most common location for pain from hip osteoarthritis, but other locations -- especially pelvis and knee -- all can be coming from the hip. We suspect arthritis when pain is worse after activity and improves with rest. But it is the range of motion and pain with movement that we as internists look for on exam to help us decide whether the complaints are likely from the hip joint or from another location. Pain is common with internal rotation (such as placing the outside of your ankle on the opposite knee and letting the elevated knee fall to the side). I think the main message is that pain in the hip or groin, especially if worse with exercise, suggests arthritis, and an X-ray can confirm the diagnosis. The arthritis booklet discusses rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 301W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have nitroglycerin with me, as I have heart disease. If I see someone having a heart attack, can I give them one? -- J.G. ANSWER: I applaud your civic-mindedness, but you should not give out nitroglycerine. It is an extremely powerful medication that should be used only when sure of the diagnosis. I recall the chief resident during my training warning a fellow intern that he needed to do a careful exam before giving nitroglycerine, because it can be fatal in people with severe aortic stenosis, a blockage in one of the heart valves. It made quite an impression on me. Trained first-responders carry aspirin, nitroglycerine and oxygen for heart attack victims. The key is to get the person to definitive medical care as soon as possible. I do recommend that everyone who is physically capable of providing CPR learn to do so. You can save the life of a loved one or a total stranger. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Thank you to everyone and every company that participated in the Lakeville United Church of Christ (LUCC) 1st Penny Social that was held on 2/11/17. It was a successful fund raising event that equally benefited the following three not-forprofit organizations within our community: Chances and Changes, the Livonia Food Pantry and the Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department. On behalf of the LUCC Stewardship Committee, thank you again for your participation.
“We’ll take care of that for you.” These were the first words I heard as I entered my five weeks of respite care at Clark Meadows. That quality of care, kindness, helpfulness, and encouragement continued for my entire stay. It was a completely positive experience that enabled me to move back into my own
apartment and to be independent once again. I am so thankful that Clark Meadows is an integral part of Ferris Hills. My heartfelt thanks to all the staff there for your help. Sybil Amico
On Sunday, January 29, Riga Recreation, in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, held its annual “WinterFest,” minus the snow, at the Churchville Elementary School. The community was treated to the Lions “World Famous” Chicken BBQ along with a kids’ carnival, caricature drawings, chair massages, wildlife education, robotics, and airbrush tattoos. Thanks go out to all the organizations and people who made this year’s event a huge success. The turnout by the Riga community is to be complimented as the Lions sold out all their BBQs and there was a constant flow of the crowd throughout the day. All involved look forward to WinterFest, 2018 and hopefully snow for outdoor activities!
To the person who criticized the party who paid their bills by check: there are people who do not have a computer either by choice or need and paying bills by check is still used by many. I personally prefer paying by check rather than putting my personal data on the internet. As long as banks provide check capabilities, I will continue to do so. It costs a lot to own a computer and for internet services so I think we who pay by check may be a bit more frugal and safer than you. SO, you use your computer internet services but do not criticize those of us who prefer not to.
Horseback riding is a popular pastime in this rural area. However, for a few months out of the year the best place to ride unfortunately, is the side of the road. If it’s too muddy, we damage farmers’ fields. Or the ground is frozen and rough making it uncomfortable for
horse’s feet. My concern is that most drivers don’t slow down, and some don’t even move over. We move away from the road when a vehicle is coming, but I think drivers need to be aware that the 1000 pound animal we are on doesn’t understand that they can’t run away from (& into the road) if something scares them. So please, when you see someone riding, SLOW DOWN and MOVE OVER! Help us enjoy our hobby safely. You do not want to hit us and we do not want to be hit by you! Disgusted. I witnessed a pet hit by a car on a chosen spot city street. 911 advised an officer and the humane society agent would be dispatched. 40 minutes later I inquired where the officer/agent were and was told that they don’t get involved in deceased pets. 40 minutes... of course it died. No more donations from this guy..... I walk everywhere. I got stopped in a crosswalk two days ago, they told me to hurry up and move, that it is cold. You have a car. I’m walking. I told you to go ahead and move, but no, you yelled at me to move!
