INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICK Despite growing up in a family with strong ties to organized religion, Saint Patrick himself was not raised in a particularly religious household. Though his grandfather was a member of the clergy and his mother was a close relative of St. Martin of Tours, Saint Patrick’s childhood home was not especially religious nor was it one that placed a strong emphasis on education. In fact, Saint Patrick admitted later in life that his lack of formal education had long been a source of embarrassment for him.

Spring, summer, and fall fill us with hope; winter alone reminds us of the human condition. ~ Mignon McLaughlin, The Second Neurotic’s Notebook, 1966

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICK Saint Patrick’s work as a Christian missionary incorporated some pagan beliefs to which many natives of Ireland had previously subscribed. He combined those beliefs with the Christian sacrament, and the Celtic cross traces its origins to this combination of pagan beliefs and Christianity.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY

ENJOY IRISH COFFEE THIS ST. PATRICK’S DAY St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with many things, most notably the jovial atmosphere of the various events celebrating both the life of St. Patrick and Irish culture. New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are known for the Big Apple’s impressive parade up Fifth Avenue, while few who have partaken of Patty’s Day festivities in Chicago can forget the green Chicago River. Celebrations may vary from city to city, but it’s a good bet that celebrants will hear some traditional Irish music, enjoy a pint of Guinness and/or join the masses wearing green wherever they end up this St. Patrick’s Day. Drinking Irish coffee is another St. Patrick’s Day tradition many revelers enjoy. Few may indulge in Irish coffee throughout the year, but this special concoction can be a great way to warm up after attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the often chilly March temperatures. Cocktails made with coffee date back quite far, but Irish coffee does not have to go back too far to trace its history. In the mid-20th century, chef Joe Sheridan was working in Foynes, County Limerick when a group of United States-bound travelers found themselves stranded due to inclement weather that grounded their plane. Whether he was trying to warm them up or wake them up after their ordeal, Sheridan served the passengers coffee with a little bit of Irish whiskey mixed in. When the group inquired as to what they were drinking, Sheridan reportedly told them, “that’s Irish coffee.

A food associated with St. Patrick’s Day, Irish soda bread gets its unique name from its ingredients. When baking this beloved bread, bakers use baking soda instead of yeast as a leavening agent.

DID YOU KNOW? Through the years, cars have evolved so much that certain parts once integral to their operation have now become obsolete. Only time will tell which components and features of today’s cars will disappear in the future. However, present drivers can reminisce about how cars have evolved even in the last 20 to 30 years. The following are some once-standard parts and features that have all but disappeared from modern vehicles. Ashtrays and cigarette lighters: Smoking-related accessories began to vanish as the dangers of smoking became more apparent. Ashtrays in the dashboard and in the rear armrests are no longer standard. Full-sized spare tire: The “doughnuts” of today can be driven on for only limited distances and look awkward on larger vehicles. The full-sized spare enabled drivers to repair the flat tire on their own schedules. Control knobs: Push buttons and digital dashes have replaced the manual knobs of the past. Levers often enabled drivers to adjust the heat without taking their eyes off the road. Bench seats: Front bench seats have given way to two seats separated by a center console. No longer is it possible to fit three or four people in the front of a vehicle. Whip antenna: Remember those thin, flexible antennas? Many modern vehicles feature more solid antennas that can be unscrewed for trips through the carwash or an antenna that is modeled into the car in an inconspicuous way. If drivers exhibit a preference for satellite radio in the years ahead, traditional antennas may soon become obsolete as well.

While New York and Boston host the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the United States, more than 100 parades are held in honor of St. Patrick throughout the country each year. For those who love a good parade but don’t have much time on their hands, the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, is home to the world’s shortest St. Patrick’s Day parade. The parade takes place on the city’s Bridge Street, which measures just 98 feet in length.

OAKFIELD Oakfield Historical Society Monthly Meeting - Tuesday, March 6, 7pm-9pm, Oakfield Government & Community Center, 3219 Drake St., Oakfield. The first installment of Oakfield Historical Society’s 2018 lecture series is about the Orphan Train. By the 1850s, large eastern U.S. cities had massive numbers of orphaned children. New York City alone had an estimated 30,000 children without parents, making placement with local families virtually impossible in a city of 500,000. The orphan trains operated between 1854 and 1929, relocating about 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, or homeless children. Perennial favorite speaker Jeff Donahue is presenting this fascinating program. Event is free and open to the public. http://www. oakfieldhistory.org

Newly Published Local Poet - An Inspiration By Joyce Shutts Evelyn Marie Shoots of Henrietta is a true inspiration. Through her 90+ years, she has been a wordsmith & poet. Her dream has been to publish a book of her poetry. That dream came true in late November 2017 thanks to the Historian at West Henrietta Baptist Church. Bonita Healy compiled & published the book entitled “Grove of Grace.” The back cover quote follows. “During her more than 90 years of life, Evelyn Shoots has been bubbling with poetry that springs from her deep love of God, His creation, and the people who are blessed to be in her life. Here you will find peace, joy, and inspiration in the grove of grace she faithfully inhabits and shares.” The book contains an autobiography of this special lady’s life. It is available on Amazon.com, as well as from the author. Her poems have been published in “The LINK,” West Henrietta Baptist’s newsletter, and starting last year in the “Lake Country Echo.” She has had book signings at West Henrietta Baptist & the Henrietta Senior Center.

Bonita Healy, Patricia Floyd, Evy Shoots

‘Evy’ is an inspiration to all who know her with her caring ways, wonderful smile, and enthusiasm for life. She has a deep, meaningful faith, and spends time in God’s word. She always knows what to write or say to make you feel loved. She also expresses herself through music and sings in the choir. Evy is a living example of how we should never give up on our dreams. Congratulations Evy!! And, thank you Bonita.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy COCKTAIL CONTROVERSY It has recently been noted that a popular cocktail can erode tooth enamel and give rise to cavities. The Aperol Spritz is an Italian-inspired cocktail that combines Prosecco (a less-expensive alternative to Champagne) and Aperol (an Italian aperitif composed of bitter orange, rhubarb, and other ingredients). As it turns out, drinking too much of this popular cocktail exposes teeth to the residual sugars and acids that sufficiently eat away at enamel to cause what has come to be known as the “prosecco smile.” Of course, there is nothing new in all this, in that dentists and health professionals have long advised against drinking carbonated beverages, which get their fizz from the release of carbon dioxide, which dissolves into carbonic acid. If you have questions about protecting your teeth’s enamel, be sure to discuss your concerns with us

at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. We bring you our weekly dental column in order to keep you up-to-date on the latest research, innovations, and procedures available in dentistry today and to inform our friends and neighbors here in Batavia of the many benefits of regular dental care. New patients are always welcome at our state-of-the-art office at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P.S. With respect to consuming acidic and sugary foods and drinks, moderation is key. It also helps to rinse with water after consuming foods that pose a danger to tooth enamel.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible to be allergic to the cold weather and temperature changes? My son is 23 years old, and when he goes out in the cold, he breaks out in hives. What can he do? -- K.R. ANSWER: This sounds exactly like cold urticaria, which isn’t an allergy, but is similar in some ways. Doctors may test this by placing an ice cube (in a plastic bag with water) on the skin (usually the forearm) for five minutes, then watch the skin as it rewarms. If a hive develops (with raised skin and redness), that confirms the diagnosis. Cold urticaria can be associated with some infections (Lyme disease, hepatitis and HIV, among others) and with celiac disease. People with cold urticaria need to worry about systemic reactions. Avoiding cold (especially swimming in cold water) is critical, but even cold beverages can cause a serious systemic reaction, including swelling of the mouth and throat. Even anaphylaxis, a life-threatening collapse of the circulatory system, can develop. Many people with severe cold urticaria carry an epinephrine autoinjector in case of emergency. Antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are the best pharmacologic treatment. Experts in cold urticaria include allergists and dermatologists. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Whenever someone is ill with most diseases, they are usually prescribed a drug or a medicine, or a pharmaceutical product. Why is it that cancer patients are treated with “chemo,” or “chemotherapy,” rather than one of the above? Is there a difference, or is it just semantics? Nobody I’ve asked seems to have an answer. -- D.G. ANSWER: To be honest, I was confused too, until medical school, where I learned that “chemotherapy” is just another word for a drug or medicine intended to treat a condition. We just normally reserve the term for drugs used to treat cancer. Although we tend to think of the side effects of chemotherapy as horrific, and some certainly are the most toxic substances we ever use, they vary widely in how well they are tolerated. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In August I had open repair of my right rotator cuff. I was told it was a severe tear with bone and tendon involvement. I am 67, and the recovery has been a long one. If you can believe it, even with physical therapy and pain management, I am still uncomfortable at times. I have a stupid question that I hope you can answer. Ever since surgery, I have had to sleep on my unaffected side. Is it OK for me to finally try sleeping on my right side? I don’t have another appointment at the orthopedic office. I am embarrassed, as it is one question I haven’t asked. -- C.V. ANSWER: It’s not a stupid question at all. I don’t think you will damage the surgery repair by sleeping on the shoulder now, and you certainly can try it to see if it feels uncomfortable. I also would recommend you continue the exercises your physical therapists gave you. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. 716-474-2105 TREATING DEPRESSION Depression is a very treatable condition. Psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications or a combination thereof can be very effective in managing symptoms. Mental health professionals can work with individuals to find the right therapy based on symptoms and severity of the depression. Also, it may take some time to find the right medication or treatment; therefore, people are urged to remain patient and hopeful. The National Institute of Mental Health says people who suspect they may be suffering from depression should make an appointment to see a doctor or health care provider. The sooner action is taken, the more quickly the condition can be addressed.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come.

How to stay flexible as you age Men and women may begin to feel less flexible as they get older. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, that loss of flexibility is because muscles lose both strength and elasticity as the body ages. A lack of flexibility can make men and women more vulnerable to certain types of injuries, including muscle strains and tears. While people might not be able to maintain the flexibility they enjoyed in their twenties, there are ways for them to combat age-related loss of flexibility. • Stretch frequently. Stretching is a great way to combat age-related loss of flexibility. Stretch major muscle groups, such as hamstrings and shoulder muscles, several times per week. When practicing static stretching, the goal is to gradually elongate the muscle being stretched before holding the elongated position, and ultimately allowing the muscle to return to resting position. As flexibility improves, elongated stretches can be held for 30 seconds. Avoid stretching muscles that are sore or injured, and discontinue a stretch if you feel pain or discomfort. • Include yoga in your exercise regimen. Practitioners of yoga typically love how this unique discipline that exercises the body while relaxing the mind improves their flexibility. Many yoga poses are designed to improve the strength and flexibility of muscles, and some physicians may even recommend yoga to aging patients. Yoga DVDs or streaming sessions can be great, but beginners may want to visit yoga studios or sign up for classes at their gyms so instructors can personally ensure they are doing each pose correctly. As their flexibility improves, men and women can try more difficult poses and classes if they so desire. • Get in the pool. Swimming is another activity that can help aging men and women improve their flexibility. Strength-training exercises are an important component of a well-balanced exercise regimen, but such workouts tend to focus on one or two muscle groups at a time. That means other muscle groups may be inactive and tighten up as a result. Swimming works the entire body, which helps all muscle groups stay loose and flexible. One or two swimming sessions per week can contribute to great gains in overall flexibility, especially for men and women who remember to stretch when they get out of the pool. Flexibility may decrease as men and women age, but there are various ways to combat the natural loss of flexibility.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. DID YOU KNOW? H O R O SC O P E S ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You could have some problems with doubters who don’t share your enthusiasm for that new project you’re supporting. But use the facts to win them over to your side. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Someone is impressed by how you managed to get your case to the right people, despite attempts to keep you on the outside looking in. Expect to hear more about this. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good for you -- your gift for seeing both sides of a dispute helps cool down a potentially explosive workplace situation. Some family-related tensions also begin to ease. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your determination to prove yourself is put to the test by midweek. Counting all the positive factors you have going for you will help you get over your selfdoubt. Good luck. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Several co-workers are still determined to resist coming over to your side. But don’t let that stop you from presenting your proposal to the people who count. Stay the course. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might prefer to be taken on faith and not have to prove yourself. But the truth is, you need to offer more facts if you hope to persuade people to accept what you say. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family situation takes an unwelcome turn. While others might be looking around for answers, you’ll soon sort it all out logically, and the matter will be resolved. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Someone might try to create doubt about your reliability for his or her own agenda. But your reputation and your colleagues’ long-standing faith in you saves the day. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unexpected change of plans forces you to come up with an alternative by the end of the week. Look for colleagues to offer valuable suggestions. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Nothing upsets the Goat as much as broken promises. But before you vent your anger, consider that this could ultimately prove to be a blessing in disguise. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) An old workplace problem you thought you had solved for good resurfaces. But this time, co-workers will take a more active role in helping you deal with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful not to be misled by a negative reaction to one of your more important projects. If you believe in it, then it has worth and is, therefore, worth staying with. BORN THIS WEEK: Everyone appreciates your gift for finding beauty, even where it seems least likely to exist. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

People with red hair are often assumed to be of Irish descent. Although not everyone with copper tresses can trace their lineage to the Emerald Isle, a deeper look at genealogy may, in fact, point out Irish origins somewhere along the way. According to Eupedia, a website that investigates European ancestry and genetics, Ireland has the highest per capita percentage of redheads in the world. The rates hover anywhere from 10 to 30 percent. In order to have red hair, a person must possess the MC1R gene, which is recessive and only occurs in about 2 percent of the world’s population, says the National Institutes of Health. Both parents must pass on a copy of the gene in order for their offspring to be born with red hair. Red hair also tends to skip generations, so if you are a redhead, your children may not be born with red hair, but your grandchildren may. The rarest combination is a person with red hair and blue eyes, which also are a recessive trait. Other cultures that historically have red hair are Scandinavian nations, like Norway. It is believed that since ancient Vikings took Irish slaves to Norway centuries ago, their genetics intermingled. Keep in mind that redheads should stay out of the sun. Research says the pigment that gives hair the red color can make redheads more susceptible to melanoma than even fair-skinned blonds.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY While corned beef has become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States, the corned beef eaten in the United States is not the corned beef familiar to people in Ireland. That’s because the corned beef eaten in the U.S. is largely from kosher Jewish butchers, whose corned beef is made from brisket, a tougher cut of meat taken from the front of the animal, whereas the corned beef produced in Ireland comes from the hindquarter.

A big thank you to Dr. Robert S. Marchese, a Batavia dentist who offers a discount to all Veterans who served this country in our military. He happens to be the only dentist in Batavia to do so. He doesn't have to offer that but he respects what Veterans have given up (time out of their lives) in support of their country. I have gone to Dr. Marchese for a couple of years now and he not only does a great job, he's very friendly, asks about my family, and saves me and I'm sure other Veterans a lot of money. This past Veterans Day in November he offered free cleanings for Veterans. Ronald Jackett, USAF Veteran

I was walking my friend's dog the other day. I saw a small gray bag by a tree. I KNEW what it was having seen them before. If you clean up after your dog [Which you are supposed to do], PLEASE take it with you! Don't just leave it laying around for others to pick up. Think about it

What many Veterans, of whatever branch of service they were in, don’t know is that if they take a copy of their DD Form 214 with them and go to the Genesee County Clerk’s Office they’ll receive free, a card offering discounts from many businesses in the county and a brochure (flyer) from the “Return the Favor” program. Some merchants listed offer as much as 25% off to those who have served their country. My hats off to them! Ronald Jackett, USAF Veteran

Many thanks and deep appreciation to the couple who answered prayers from me and a handicapped gentleman. I had put a request in the Penny Saver looking for a scooter and 3 days after it came out I got a call saying they had one available. Thank you so much Gerry and Rita! The newfound freedom in the scooter is being enjoyed and we are awaiting summer for adventures. God Bless you both! Shirley

Haiku for our dog Tyson! Squirrels are outside. Tyson sees them off he sprints. Never catching one.

~ what would it look like if everyone did the same thing? Pick up after the dog, and just leave the open bag for someone else to pick up?

anyone can make mistakes!!! So much for the Christmas spirit?! It's time this country lightened up a little.

wherever they feel like it to drop off their kids, please stop... All you are doing is making the parents who are trying to follow the rules mad. The parking lot sucks, yes, there are a lot of cars/people, yes, but rules are there for a reason. Just because the safety officers are not out patrolling doesn't mean you are not affecting other parents just trying to get their kid(s) to school safely.

I recently stopped at [coffee shop] for a donut before I took my 2 y/o son into daycare and before I went to work... of course I didn't want to take my son into [coffee shop] when he was fussy and crying, so I left him in the car (with running heat!!! He wasn't cold!!) while I enjoyed a donut and caught up with a friend. Meanwhile some jerk called the cops on me for having my son relaxing in the car and not only was I questioned, but I was late to work!! I am a GOOD mom and

I wonder if people realize how frustrating or dangerous it is not to have your house number on your mailbox or house. It makes it almost impossible for emergency personnel or bus drivers to locate the houses. So please purchase some decent size numbers and put them on both sides of your mailbox. To all those parents out there who feel the need to disregard traffic laws to cut traffic off just to get to school, and then those parents who stop their car

I live in a neighborhood with sidewalks. I always make sure I clear the snow from the sidewalk after a storm. Most people don't even bother to do it. Please clear your sidewalk. Your neighbors would appreciate it.

DID YOU KNOW? Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.

john.bochiechio@selectcustomdoor.com BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.
